      The foam is such a great alternative and lightweight as well! I debated on adding the fiber mesh to my project but opted not to and have no regrets. If it were a much larger project I might consider it to make it more rigid.

    • @kcdcdesigns
      @kcdcdesigns  Рік тому +1

      Amey, I honestly don't feel it's necessary at that size. If I were using 1/2" foam I probably would, to make it more rigid. But this one, at 1" thick with a color coat and flood coat, it's still very rigid. Actually, I would only put down fiber mesh if it were very large, and/or if I had to seam pieces together, and/or if I was worried about not having a solid base underneath it before pouring. On this one, I put 3/4" plywood underneath it (just a bit smaller than the project) to prevent it from sagging in areas once I applied the epoxy. You really want a good solid base for it to sit on, especially on large pieces such as shower walls.
      PS - Even on Rhonda's big back-drop they didn't use mesh. Shower walls though I certainly would!

  • @3BoardChicks

    This is gorgeous, Keith!
    What was the reason for no flood coat? If I want to make a table tray or something similar would I not need the flood coat?
    TIA!
    ~The Prop Spot
    Shannon

    • @kcdcdesigns
      @kcdcdesigns  Рік тому

      Thank you, Shannon! I think I did add a flood coat but if I did not, it would have only been because it is a wall-art piece. I would always recommend a flood coat unless it's wall art or maybe shower panels if a dirty pour is applied, using 8-10 oz/sf.
      Even table trays, especially because it's such a small surface and there's rarely (if ever) a disadvantage to a flood coat.

      I personally would not use foam as a table top, if it's going to get any type of hard use (heavy objects, etc.). If not hard use, I would be sure to apply the fibermesh to add strength to it, then I think you'd be okay.

      Hi Lynn, and welcome to the epoxy world 😁. I don't know if you've seen this full countertop tutorial, but I'm using the same colors because when the customer saw the wall hanging, that's what he wanted for his countertop. ua-cam.com/video/LFmsxxxLziE/v-deo.html

      Main base colors used:
      Black Metallic Mica Powder - SCC/Polycolor
      Deep Silver Metallic Mica Powder - SCC/Polycolor
      Bronze - Just Resin epoxy paste
      Highlight colors:
      White Pearl - Just Resin Paste
      Rust Metallic Mica Powder - SCC/Polycolor (discontinued :( )
      Accent Vein: RustOleum Seaside spray paint
      All colors, except the "Rust Metallic" (discontinued) can be purchased at RK3Designs.com .

    Hey Keith. Question on your undercoat. Are you concerned that if you don’t paint the back that you will get some sort of warping with material on the front and none on the back?

    • @kcdcdesigns
      @kcdcdesigns  Рік тому +1

      Hi Pete, it's interesting you ask that. On one piece (12" x 24") I painted the back and now have bubbles that have appearedf on the topside. On the larger piece that you see in the video, I did not paint the backside and have no such bubbles. Keep in mind I did not apply the fibermesh and Quick Coat to either piece but I'm now wondering if there are some gases that are in the foam that are trying to escape from the one I painted. If so, I would think they would escape easier from the painted side than the epoxied side, but until I cut the bubbles to see where it separated, I won't know for sure, so that's just speculation and I'll keep you posted.
      I don't foresee any warping, and although the large bubbles in the epoxy are concerning, I'm confident they wouldn't be there had I applied the mesh and Quick Coat.

    • @petercarels
      @petercarels Рік тому

      @@kcdcdesigns I wonder if you painted the back side first, as well as the front, let dry (off gas) and see what happens?

    • @kcdcdesigns
      @kcdcdesigns  Рік тому

      @@petercarels I discovered what happened. I added bondo to the top surface to add some texture and I'm guessing the heat generated from it reacted with the foam. When I cut the bubbles, they only appeared where there was bondo below it. So again, by adding the fiber mesh and Quick Coat, I could have eliminated those issues. This is why we experiment, right? lol

    • @petercarels
      @petercarels Рік тому

      @@kcdcdesigns exactly. So are you saying fiber mesh and quick coat on both sides prior to putting your base coat?

    • @kcdcdesigns
      @kcdcdesigns  Рік тому +1

      @@petercarels oh no, just on the side being poured. If I were to apply body filler to the top side again, I would scuff the Quick Coat with 80 grit where I want to apply the body filler, then sand lightly with 220 and apply the undercoat paint and proceed as normal.
