      Thanks! You know what's funny is, the thing I find best about it is that I tend to misread the ruler on the saw, but it's much harder to misread a digital readout. It's saved me a couple of times. Let me know how it works out for you. 😄

    Great, thorough and entertaining video Dan... Kudos! I sure hope Wixey notices the excellent job you did of reviewing their product! Dan, I also have a PCS and would love this but a bit turned off by all your improvising. Are they absolutely necessary? I don't mind drilling into the fence rail etc but would rather just install it as simply as possible. Infinity tools web site shows a simper installation but I'm wondering if they left something out? BTW did I tell you that I hate you!!! Your videos are that good that I nearly always end up buying something that you demonstrate. You're killing my wallet!!

    Since you had 3 holes not line up with your initial attempt to mount the rail, is it possible you turned the rail around (front in back) when you marked your initial mounting holes?

      That's a good thought, and I had to take a close look at the video, but I didn't do that. And the more I think about it, I realize I'd have had to flip it over, which would put the non-flat side against the tube, and that would have been obvious to me right away. But good thinking, thanks!

    Awesome video, Dan! Great attention to detail on highlighting the tricky area of the pics. Some of those pics -- like the black custom bracket -- would have been useless without your additions. The only snag is you cannot have a PCS and continue calling yourself "newbie". Fairly certain it's in SawStop's manual. =/

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому +1

      Thanks, Fred. It's funny, I was going to do a simple "this is how I installed it" video, when I discovered just how bad their instructions were. And then I couldn't help myself - I had to do the whole shebang. Oh - and actually, I'm not calling myself a newbie anymore. 😛Now this is "my channel for the newbie woodworker", although I haven't been posting many newbie-focused videos lately. I need to get back to that. But I think SawStop would be fine with a newbie using their saws, and actually, who better to benefit from the safety tech than a newbie? Thanks for the fun comment. 😄

    A thought: if you reverse your math (Wixey minus caliper), you could instead move the distance to the difference, then zero out to make it perfect...right? Maybe I’m off
    In my mind anyway, you’d have gotten -.006, so you move the gauge (instead of going to zero) to -.006, then zero it out

    • @MJFacas
      @MJFacas 5 років тому

      Alex W. That’s what I would have done. I’m just surprised the follow up test cut actually did read off the expected .001”. That’s either a very consistent measuring device(s) and/or wood.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому

      I was trying to come up with a way so I always knew whether to add or subtract the difference, because I always get confused about things like that. So this is simple - if the difference is positive, add it. If it's negative, subtract it.

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому

      @@MJFacas Or pure luck. Since it could have been off anywhere from +.0035" to -.0015", since the margin of error is .005". (If my math is correct, but regardless, you get the point.) And read my response to Alex about why I calculate it the way I do.

      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому +1

      And you were right, of course. It's funny, though, because some people say "how often do you need that level of accuracy", and the first time I tried cutting a runner with it, I realised that I needed it *more* accurate! But it's OK because I just cut it at least .005" proud, then use my digital caliper and digital indicator gauge to get it spot-on, so it's still much quicker. And all around, it's much easier for me to use than the hashmarks, because I'm regularly counting wrong. 😏

    Dan, I just saw this video ua-cam.com/video/XHT75fD_BAU/v-deo.html and he has a small deviation past 20". All measurements are perfect up to about 20" then a tiny drop off in accuracy. Do you get that? Have you ever set your Wixey to say 25" to 30" and then checked the cut with a good tape measure. I read somewhere else that another user had a drop off in accuracy past 25".

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  3 роки тому

      I haven't tried it. My guess would be that the two sections of track aren't joined properly. But in any case, I can't imagine when I'd need that kind of accuracy with pieces that size, assuming the deviation is pretty small. But if I *did* worry about it, I'd figure out where the deviation happened, and just compensate for it. Or ask the manufacturer what they had to say about it.

    I’ve had two units for 4 years now on two of my table saws which are cabinet style and are never moved around. The magnet Wixey uses is too weak. I glued a high strength magnet on top of the Wixey supplied magnet with JB Weld and solved that problem. The next problem is a major point of frustration. The reader head looses calibration frequently, therefore you never know if it needs to be recalibrated which means ripping another piece of material and fiddling around as this guy shows to recalibrate unless you just want a very rough calibration of sliding your fence against the blade which is worse than just using the built in tape measure. I end up going back to the saw’s tape measure most of the time. Very disappointing. I would not recommend this product.

    I have a Bosch tablesaw and when you move the fence you have to use a set square because the fence doesn't stay 90 deg to the rail, what is the fence like on the Wixey? Is there any movement in it once you've locked it in place? and does it stay perfectly square to the rail?, Thanks

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  4 роки тому

      It stays perfectly square, because it's attached to the rail. If your fence moves around some, that won't hurt the Wixey, because the magnet lets the Wixey slide around and still stay attached to the fence.

    Just for the sake of accuracy: If your calipers measure 1.851" and the digital readout says 1.85 that is NOT a difference of .001". The readout is approximating a value between 1.845" and 1.854", both of which round to 1.85". So the actual error is between -.005" to +.003" → still excellent for woodworking. I think I'll be buying this device. Thank you for the vid; nice job.

    Because of the limited space in my workshop as It doubles as my car/scooter/motorbike shop. I have 2 cars being restored and 3 scooter I have to keep running. This does not leave me much room doe my woodshop area. I have a 1952 Craftsman 8" tilt table saw that I have restored that weight what feel like a TON. I need to DYI fence for this beast but I need to make extensions that I can lower for storage. The Cast iron ones that came with the saw are more then a pain and only 10" wide. The saw itself is 18" wide and I made a stand so the saw is 34" off the ground and will accept the dust collection can to collect all the dust from the saw. I love the idea of this as it mean I would no longer need a scale with the fence.
    My Idea would be to attach the senor strips to edge of the table saw and make a fence so the meter is at the 34" height of the table saw. I have watch (lost count) of DYI fence video. I see the same problem in everyone of them. They have the massive base on one or both ends of the fence. It just blows my mind. From design point, it just blow my mind, that they can't come up with a "T" track using 2 or 3 point inside the "T" track to move the fence on so it stays true to the blade when it moved.

    Thank you! This was helpful on calibration with the current unit. I have the original version but have recently ordered the new sliding gauge part. I never liked the blade routine on the old unit, so this is what I did in case it helps anyone. Set your fence anywhere, rip a stable hardwood at some random width, and zero the Wixey. Then measure the ripped board and back the fence up to negative that number. When you get there, zero the Wixey again. Done.

The thing I've enjoyed the most about the Wixey gauge is that it helps me double-check that I'm in the right inch number. Every once in a while I'll look at the left ruler guide instead of the right one, or I'll just be stupid and get it in the 6" range when it's supposed to be in the 7" range, etc. The Wixey is a great sanity check for someone as error-prone as me. 😄

      I haven't had any issues. I read some stuff on their website on this subject, which means you're not the only one this has happened to, and if memory serves, they said it's almost always related to not joining the two parts together properly. So you might want to try and contact them. The other thing I've learned is how to slide the fence up to my blade and reset the gauge so it's right every time. If I just gently touch the blade and then reset the gauge, it's almost always right on. You might wonder why I need to reset it a lot, and it's because I have the terrible habit of sliding my fence just a little too far to the right so it goes partially off the end. Happens once a week or so (you'd think I'd learn).

I remember you had some link or drawing or Video about a solution for this fence to be installed at a Bosch GTS 10XC. Unfortunately I can't find this information anymore. may I ask you to help me, please? Thanks!

Or something like that. And yes, you can mention my channel's name, although they don't know me from Adam, so I don't know if it will help or not. BTW, I understand about the vision thing. For me, it's not so much that I can't read the analog gauge - it's that I have a horrible tendency to to misread it. So it really helps me keep from making that mistake. Good luck! 😄

    Dan -- Thanks for the great video! Your comment about the satisfaction of seeing an exact digital value struck a chord with me. I'm sure I would have the same reaction!
    However, I'm curious about how well you still like the setup now that you've been using it for a few weeks. Do you still think it was worth the effort and expense? You even had to drill holes in that shiny new Sawstop! So do you find yourself using the digital readout as much as expected, or do you mostly just look at the analog calibration that came with the saw?
    Thanks again!

    • @TheNewbieWoodworker
      @TheNewbieWoodworker  5 років тому

      Hey, Bill. Thanks for the comment, and great questions. Yes, I'm still using it, and I do like it. But now that I have it, I find myself trying to get it dead-on, even when all I need to do is cut reasonably close to 2", for instance. Another example of my perfectionism taking hold. So I'd say that if you're like me on that front, at least think about that before you get it. 😛
      I didn't mind drilling the holes at all, because the holes were underneath, and there's already holes for the other bolts, so it's no big deal. If you saw it, you'd understand - nobody would give it a second thought, if they wanted to buy it, for instance, although I have no intention of selling the saw.
      Depending on the value I'm going for, I may use the analog to get close, then the digital to get exact. I don't have the digital equivalents of the smaller fractions in my head, so it takes a little tapping it around to find the right spot. But all in all, I'm glad I have it, although I'm not really sure if it's helping much beyond a little peace of mind.

      Okay, that helps a lot. Thanks. My PCS should arrive in about two weeks, which seems like such a looooooong time! Then I'll decide about the digital fence readout.

      Just checked it: They say that they are a 2 men business so international shipping is too expensive for them. They have international distributors but - of course 😩 - none in Switzerland. There are 2 in Germany (neighbour country to Switzerland) but they seem to be out of stock.
      Amazon in Europe doesn‘t sell it and having Amazon in the US send it to Switzerland is too expensive for me (close to 50% of the original prize plus Swiss tax). I‘ll have to wait until Germany or Amazon Europe have some in stock again... 😔😢
