Same question that was asked about Gary Oldman until recently. The fact that the man went the entire 90s without winning an Oscar is puzzling to say the least.
I just watched the 1947 version of Nightmare Alley and loved it! For me, the "standout" performance was Helen Walker (who played Cate Blanchett's part). I thought she stole the picture. Her bio on IMDb is amazing. Apparently, she was a rising star in1942 and got top billing for her first movie. For the next 4 years, she developed into an amazing actress. But in 1946, she had a tragic car accident in which she killed a soldier and injured 2 other soldiers and she broke her hip. The 2 soldiers who survived sued her for speeding and drunk driving and won. Hollywood wanted nothing to do with her after that. The next year she did Nightmare Alley and totally nailed that part, but she was finished in Hollywood. She died at age 47. Tragic story. You could tell she had that "star" presence.
Can somebody please explain the significance of the jar baby? It has to play a much bigger part than it seems to on the surface. They focus on it way too much.
I just watched this and was blown away. I should have clearly guessed the end but was so involved in taking in each moment in that once the ending hit, it hit hard for me. Bradley Cooper really sold the ending and was great throughout. I need to seek out the original now.
WHOO! Leech Woman reference!!! Keep it up Nick! I'm so glad you two gave this movie a positive review! Big fan of Guillermo del Toro movies and was hoping this was another great one!
The only reason Stan accepts Lilith's demand is because the writer(s) of the movie wrote it that way. Any real person who scams for a living would avoid stranges who are interested in probing his or her life. The writers should have chosen a more realistic approach for Lilith to infiltrated Stan such as the typical bedroom entrapment scenario where after sex a woman easily seduces a man to tell her everything. Once Stan began to confess to her, that's when I stopped watching the movie because it doesn't make sense that a professional scammer would willingly expose his scam to a stranger.
OKAY! Watched this review a week ago and i have watched this movie 10 times. Yes TEN times! It's Goooood! You both said it was good but im like fish to water. Love it! Always great at reviews and letting me know what to really watch. Thank you both😘
I can't unsee Jason Isaacs in that thumbnail and feel like I'm having a Berenstein moment. Love Del Toro, love noir, will definitely check this one out!
Just got out of the theater and came straight here! 🤣 My question is what do you think Caite Blanchett's motivation is? Do you think she wanted Stan to take down the Judge and Ezra for her own personal reasons?? And then do you think the judge harmed her causing those scars on her chest? I'm just confused by her last comment that stopped Stan at the end.. I'll always love you.. what did that mean? I missed something?
When I saw the scars on her chest and how sweetly he kissed them I wept. Breast cancer survivor. He seemed so genuine, so did she. Quite a scene and I haven’t heard much commentary on it.
I just love your chemistry! You’re like an old couple (no offense). I like watching your videos after I’ve already seen a film or have no intension of watching. I know your videos are more entertaining than those ones.
I was so worried about this movie because, quite honestly, the marketing made it look like a glitzy Luhrman production, which is weird for this story? But glad to hear it's good! Will definitely watch it now!
I agree that this film was excellent in every way, except I just didn't enjoy it. I was looking for fun watch, and I did NOT choose well for that result. My fault, to be sure. My hubby seemed to like it. I would have loved to hear more about Cate Blanchett's character. I didn't understand her intense interest in destroying Cooper, unless she just didn't like manipulative men, or, perhaps, just men in general. Maybe he reminded her of a man in her past? The INSIDER channel did an interesting YT video on how fake animals are made for movies, especially ones TO BE EATEN on film. It shows the chicken eaten by the geek in this movie. Worth a look. Thanks again!
It is disturbing, with a lot of violent images. Psychologically violent. In a very subtle way it deals with the subject of addictions The second part of the film is an orgy of beautiful Art Deco images. Very good actors come out. The direction, the photography and the script are very good. But the story is disturbing. It is not for everyone . If you are a Del Toro fan at heart, go see it. But do not take your date, because he/she is going to get pissed off ...
This movie is getting some hate don’t know why but it has been included in some top 10 list including the national board of review and American film institute. Got a chance to see to early and loved it. I think this is one of those movies that will be appreciated with time.
Yes I’m so glad you guys loved this movie! It’s gotten mixed reviews but I gave it 4 1/2 stars! Also I was the only one in the theater today to see this and that made me sad
It sounds as though the skeletal plot of the 1947 is the same, but there are departures. I've read very mixed reviews, some very scathing. I do want to see this to make up my own mind.
I don't know why so many people didn't enjoy it, I think this had everything in it. All the cast was fantastic but Cate Blanchett stole the show. I LOVED IT
You didn’t talk much about the phenomenal symbolism used throughout the film. The Christianity, chickens, items from the circus, etc. very well done. A lot of things come full circle which I appreciate.
I was worried about how Cooper would do here but I rewatched midnight meat train after reading it and was reassured and now I'm positive I'll like it. Thanks gentlemen!
I'm watching this review on my TV right now. I think you need to add a backdrop, or a rug, or whatever to absorb the echoes. It's slightly off putting. I really enjoy the dynamic between you both, but the sound is throwing me off.
This movie was awful. There was a half hearted plot. It wasn't involving. The love relationships with Rooney Mara was force. Totally style over substance. Could not wait to get out of theater and others in the theater felt the same.
Literally the best part of this channel!! I have 2 young kids, I don’t have time to watch the actual films but feel like I have! Love you guys - keep up the good work 👏
**SPOILER ALERT**This is not really a review. You told the whole plot. There's no reason to see the film. These 2 queens talked for over 17 minutes (way too long) & never even mentioned the frontal nudity scene. What's all this hype about Bradley Cooper doing a frontal nudity scene? I watched this on HBO Max and did not see any frontal nudity. What's up!
Why doesn’t Willem Dafoe have a damn Oscar yet? He is always fantastic. He is one of the finest actors of our time.
Straight facts.
Same question that was asked about Gary Oldman until recently. The fact that the man went the entire 90s without winning an Oscar is puzzling to say the least.
same for Glenn Close.
Cuz the Oscars are a sham
The ending is so strong!
the original movie is up in its entirety on UA-cam if anyone wants to check it out before seeing this version. It’s worth it ♥️

i thought it was one of the best movies I've ever seen, that ending was so tragically poignant.
I couldn't figure out what Cate Blanchett's characters motivation was.
Thanks guys! I didn't like the marketing as well and was gonna skip but you guys have convinced me! I can't wait!
Del Toro makes fantasy films for adults. Excellent review and I'm happy you two really enjoyed this one!

Just watched it tonight and my husband and I loved it! Very stylish and well acted.

Absolutely loved your review. Have watched all of your reviews and love you guys. Thank you for the videos :) highlights of my week
Just got out of the theater and came straight here! 🤣

I took it as she was abused by Ezra like the many women he spoke about but since her family was wealthy he didn't kill her & it was covered up.
Tyrone Power's best performance of all in the original.
WOW! This sounds fascinating and dark ... I am going to watch this. Fantastic breakdown!
I just love your chemistry! You’re like an old couple (no offense). I like watching your videos after I’ve already seen a film or have no intension of watching. I know your videos are more entertaining than those ones.
Caught this one tonight and really liked it, especially Bradley Cooper’s performance. Now y’all make me want to see the original.
The original is absolutely worth a watch.
@@fishjellyfilmreviews thank you for confirming, I’m going to track it down.

GREAT review. I just love your guys' channel. Keep up the great work!
Now I'm intrigued, I'll give this a watch
I just love you guys! 😂😂😂 I’m so down to see this! I wasn’t interested at first but this review got me hyped! Take care guys 👋
Same I want to see this now !
Awesome review !

My partner and I went to see it and we had a great conversation about it after 😁👍
I love this movie!

Great video!!
Thank you for echoing my thoughts on Rooney Mara. Every time I see her in a movie, I wonder, is this really her best take?
The script and direction was strong.
Yes I’m so glad you guys loved this movie! It’s gotten mixed reviews but I gave it 4 1/2 stars!
Also I was the only one in the theater today to see this and that made me sad
That is sad.
I saw the original 1947 movie
Totally agree!
Loved this film! Just saw it tonight!

14:37 succumbed: she was using neuro hypnotic programming on him?
Since that Lady Gaga film, Bradley has been goin´ hard on the rocks. lol, Just kidding. I like the old movie, btw.
Tyrone Power 🥰

Jesus..let him talk or go solo hahaha
Or don’t watch our videos
@@fishjellyfilmreviews nah I do what I want.
Negative feedback DEFINITELY isn't for everyone. It isn't an opinion..it's a literal observation LOL.
Spoiler alert. You told the entire movie.
We did?
