They're supposed to be 18-20 in act 1. By the end of the musical, they are 25. But yeah, they both look older than typical college students so it's weird to see them act so immature.
Bowen Yang is a few years younger than Cynthia Erivo and Jonathan Bailey, and just two years older Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater. So they're ALL too old for college.

Dorothy is significantly taller than the Munchkins in the 1939 movie, whose creators took it upon themselves to cast like that.

My daughter and I went with a green and pink theme . we loved it and Cynthia's portrayal of Elphie was captivating. Her voice gives me goosebumps, she's sensational!
Per Gregory Maguire, how he came up with the name "Shiz": "I took a leaf out of Tolkien's book in trying to make other places sound exotic, like his Barad-dûr and Dor-lómin (mine being Kiamo Ko, Qhoyre, and Uvvels.). About Shiz, there is the famous Persian city of Shiraz, which sounds exotic and magical, almost like sha-zaam. It too has a 'Z' on the end and an Sh' at the beginning. I have friends from the highlands of Iran and so my sense of comfort with Middle-Eastern sounding words was already established. I believe 'Shiz' came from thinking of all those considerations. Easy to read, easy to say, easy to remember, and distinctive."
In the original wonderful Wizard of Oz novel, there are some munchkins who are actually tall and one of those munchkins is the tin man Nicholas chopper in in Gregory Maguire‘s novel. The reason why there are some munchkins, who are tall is because they marry somebody who has a tall stature And tall stature represents higher power because alphabet is family has a high power status. That’s why all her family members is tall.
SPOILER ALERT: But yes, the birth and why she's green will get revealed in Part 2. If you pay SUPER close attention to all the lines in Part 1 they give little hints. That's my problem with the movie being split in 2. Part 2 explains some mysteries in part 1, but breaking it up will make it very confusing.

she is green because of the green elixir that her mother drinks, affecting the baby’s skin. but SPOILERS FOR PART 2!! the reason she has powers is because that man is the wizard, and since he is a man from kansas, like dorothy, elphaba is a child of both worlds, giving her power
I think the movie didn't really explain her conception. The impression I got was that Elphaba thinks she's the governor's biological child, while in the book and play she knows her father was someone else that ruffied her mother.
I just saw this in the theatre and didn’t know I’d been waiting my whole life to watch it 😭 Every time Ariana sang I had chills and I loved the chemistry between her and Cynthia. There were some crunchy moments, but overall really enjoyable
I happened to see Wicked last night at an early screening that Amazon Prime offered through Fandango. The theater was packed! I took a friend who has never seen the musical and knew nothing about it, and both of us enjoyed it to different extents. I'd give it a solid B with Cynthia Erivo's acting and singing being the standout in the movie. As a fan of the musical, I wasn't a fan of some of the creative choices in extending/changing some of the musical numbers. That being said, the movie could have down away with Jeff Goldblum's take on Sentimental Man. I'm really looking to seeing the next part.
I saw it last night, and as an older person (68) raised on the 1939 Wizard of Oz yearly on TV, i was enchanted and thrilled by this rendition of the Broadway musical. Yes, it's a fantasy movie, so there are bound to be moments or choices that require a suspension of your disbelief, but that is a part of art. Imperfections are slight, miscastings are based on age and bitterness, not the talent of the performers. Yes, movies are different than theatrical offerings, however, I found this effort not only well staged and performed, but exceptionally so. It takes the theatrical material and brings it to life, with extra material that enriches and explains material that is sparse in the original. I was enthralled and enchanted by the movie and look forward to the second part. I believe that both Erivo and Grande deserve an Oscar nomination for their wonderful accomplishments. I give it an enthusiastic 8.5 out of 10...or on your scale, a 4 out of 5.

I’m surprised at the amount of people that don’t feel Cynthia Erivo also deserve an Oscar nomination. Ariana Grande knocked it out the park but Erivo was the emotional glue that held that movie together. The dance scene alone is all you need to see.
Knowing little of this story. I just saw this film and I cried 3 different times. I was pleasantly surprised cause of the media storm around the BTS. But I'm happy I did. Now I get why Cynthia and Ariana have been crying in these interviews. But wait, we're these characters meant to be teenagers? Like in Harry Potter? I thought this school was called Shiz University. Bahaha! I didnt remember anything else either except defying gravity and that Glinda is not the nicest. I liked how I was reminded about the animal segregation issue.
Saw it yesterday and was blown away, but also noticed how important the book was to realt following the story. A lot of their questioms are explained in the book.
I wonder if they’ll explain why her weakness is water and how Michelle Yeo’s character knew this info 🤔 (Haven’t seen the musical or read the book so plz no spoilers)
WELL SMALL SPOILER ALERT: They actually don't. Even in the book they don't explain it. They only mention she's allergic to water so she has to bathe in oil, but I don't think they ever explain why.
The school that the characters are attending is a University. Glinda and Elphaba are college students and explain why some of the other students look older than what they are. I think this version of the movie is truly based on the novel and taking some concept of the Broadway production because the book is very dark. Plus some munchkins in OZ are all not small. Most of them are regular size according to the author of the book. It's just that Hollywood made them all small especially in the first Wizard of Oz movie...... Kristin Chenoweth stated in an interview that Ariana Grande is truly paying homage to her but put her own stamp on it. FUN FACT: The main reason why they didn't actually use short people in this film is because of Peter Dinklage. He kind of frowned upon that in Hollywood which he made a big fuss it was a controversy when they announced the live-action Snow White and the Seven Dwarf which he complained about why do all short people always have to play stereotypical roles.
I don't think that's true about Peter Dinklage. He complained about SNOW WHITE, not wicked. The munchkins aren't little because they were never originally supposed to be little.
@fundifferent1 I did not say that he complain about Wicked... I was talking about Snow White and how carefully they didn't want the munchkin to be little because he was cast in the upcoming film. Rumor has it that he was going to refuse to work with them if they do make munchkins small.
I still don’t get why Madam Morrible was working with the wizard though because yes shes not as powerful as Elphaba she still has power she can control the weather why would she work under someone who she knows has no power at all
IIRC, there is no cannon explanation for why she is green (her mother thinks she is green as punishment for her infidelity and in the books, the father thought it was punishment for jinxing himself on the day of her birth). I don’t think the books explicitly reveal the wizard is her father, only imply it. Another popular theory is that she’s green because of mixing human (the wizard) and ozian genetics. The wizard brought that potion from the real world (I believe he was from Nebraska or Kansas in the books). People in Oz can’t read human language so the mom didn’t know what she was taking. My personal theory is that the wizard was going around seducing women with his elixir with the hopes that he could have a hybrid child with some powers to help him read the Grimmerie. That’s why he makes so many allusions to him “waiting” for her.
For part 2 (SPOILERS BELOW)…. I think the best gift they have is splitting the movie in 2 because as a stage show, it Act 2 asks you suspend a LOT of disbelief for how quickly things move, get super dark, and then instantly wrap up with a nice little bow. As my one friend who saw wicked for the first time recently put it bluntly “if my freshman year college roommate told clearly dangerous people to use my sister against me directly leading to her murder because her fiancé fell in love with me by me doing…nothing, I don’t think I would forgive her that quickly lol” They’ve gotta lean into the conflict between the two of them more than just one “fight” scene that is largely played for a laugh.
Yeah but remember, Glinda had nothing to do with the ACTUAL murder of Nessa. Glinda proposed to Morrible and Wizard that a rumor that her sister was in danger would bring Elphaba out. Glinda leaves, and Morrible and Wizard talk and discuss that a rumor would not be enough to get Elphaba to show herself. That’s when Madame Morrible says “I think there’s about to be a change in the Weather”! (Indicating she is the one who causes the house to drop on NessaRose). Glinda is rightly horrified when an actual murder takes place. And at the end of the musical, has Morrible arrested for murder.
I literally wanted to see your review before watching this lol...i am not really familiar with the Wicked Universe aside from seeing the original Wizard of Oz movie and the Diana Ross version before. Also not too much into musicals. But I do like Ariana..and I didn't know her lil boyfriend is her love interest in this lol. I do trust your judgements so I'm gonna watch it 🎉
Hugs to you Nick. That story was heartbreaking. Thanks for this review. I had absolutely no faith in this film. Now I might watch it when it comes to streaming. I don’t have it in me to watch a three hour film.

Bahaha! I didnt remember anything else either except defying gravity and that Glinda is not the nicest. I liked how I was reminded about the animal segregation issue.
Saw it yesterday and was blown away, but also noticed how important the book was to realt following the story. A lot of their questioms are explained in the book.
I wonder if they’ll explain why her weakness is water and how Michelle Yeo’s character knew this info 🤔
(Haven’t seen the musical or read the book so plz no spoilers)
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 you are trolling us right?
@@tigerlilly9038 no 😐
WELL SMALL SPOILER ALERT: They actually don't. Even in the book they don't explain it. They only mention she's allergic to water so she has to bathe in oil, but I don't think they ever explain why.
@ wow that’s strange I wonder if they’ll ever dive into the origin of that - thank you for letting me know
The biceps 💪 are bicep-ing! Looking forward to seeing this and I never read the book/musical 😊
Peter Dinklage is the reason they don't have little people in the movie. It is offensive to little people.
Didn’t they make a movie like this with James Franco?
Yes, the title was Oz, The Great and Powerful
@ well Disney does this all the time so I can’t be upset. I’m still interested in seeing this kind of
That film actually wasn't too terrible. But then again, I'm a fan of Return to Oz.
I’m real damn mad that I haven’t been getting notifications from y’all. UA-cam BE fkn up! Love y’all/ mean it😘❤️🥳
I'm not a Wicked girlie and I'm not gonna watch it and I wonder how another 3 hour movie is gonna work without Defying Gravity being reprised.
I read that book and I swear I can't remember a single thing about it. 😶
I still don’t get why Madam Morrible was working with the wizard though because yes shes not as powerful as Elphaba she still has power she can control the weather why would she work under someone who she knows has no power at all
I was really hoping we'd finally be getting a straightforward adaptation of the novel. . .
That’ll definitely come in the future
Uhhhh no!!!!! This is based off the Broadway play. NOT the book.
This film just made me book a manicure appointment for tomorrow, I need swamp witch nails 😂💚🖤
Interesting theory. Makes sense to me so I’m going with it😅
Omg I couldn’t wait for this review!!❤
Good Ole Nessa in a wheelchair 😂😂
Little people protested against being cast as munchkins, dwarves, or other similar characters. It's insulting.
Great Review! You guys are right on the money. Fish Jelly Rocks!
The intro of baby elphaba being born is because it’s a musical number in the play
Yeah
Just saw it last night. I went in blind only having recognized 2 or 3 songs but I loved it
For part 2 (SPOILERS BELOW)….
I think the best gift they have is splitting the movie in 2 because as a stage show, it Act 2 asks you suspend a LOT of disbelief for how quickly things move, get super dark, and then instantly wrap up with a nice little bow. As my one friend who saw wicked for the first time recently put it bluntly “if my freshman year college roommate told clearly dangerous people to use my sister against me directly leading to her murder because her fiancé fell in love with me by me doing…nothing, I don’t think I would forgive her that quickly lol”
They’ve gotta lean into the conflict between the two of them more than just one “fight” scene that is largely played for a laugh.
Thank u for this.
That’s a good reason.
Joseph definitely looks like he’s been working out 💪🏾
"That's a good story" I'd CRASH tf OUT
I literally wanted to see your review before watching this lol...i am not really familiar with the Wicked Universe aside from seeing the original Wizard of Oz movie and the Diana Ross version before. Also not too much into musicals. But I do like Ariana..and I didn't know her lil boyfriend is her love interest in this lol. I do trust your judgements so I'm gonna watch it 🎉
Has Nick been working out lately?!?!
That's how tom riddle was born in Harry potter. Mother had affair while drinking something off.
Omg. Tracy Flick is the PERFECT example
I like how you two actually talked about sequences
I really enjoyed it. Very true to the musical. Looking forward to part 2
Hugs to you Nick. That story was heartbreaking. Thanks for this review. I had absolutely no faith in this film. Now I might watch it when it comes to streaming. I don’t have it in me to watch a three hour film.
