    I read that the 38super was for the outdoorsmen of the time and it would penetrate model T car doors making them popular with all kinds of people including law men.
    Pretty sure that it is a handloaders dream for hot rounds and was popular for competition shooting matches. I would love to have a Colt commander in 38super just to see what it can do.

    I have shot and loaded both calibers for a while and the 38 super currently is under loaded because it'll Chamberlain 38 automatic . If you'll notice much of the 38 super ammunition today has + p on the box when I first shot factory 38 super I shot Winchester it literally stuck in the two-by-fours on the backstop.

      I should’ve put this in the video, but I didn’t.I think the 38 super actually outperformed the 9 mm. There are differences in the bullet even though they look the same they obviously were not. The 38 super mushroomed, in what I would call textbook expansion. The 9 mm expanded very good but not as good as the 38 super. Like I said, I should’ve dug the hollow points out and put that in the video I didn’t do it till a day or so later.

      @@WesternOutdoor I don't think you're wrong at all sir much of the 38 super you get today is not loaded the high velocity. I don't know if you've ever read this but the original 38 super loadings were designed to pierce automotive bodies. I think I read that in an old American rifleman somewhere.

    The 38 super was used more widely in america then the 9 mm back in the day, that's why they used them outta the 1911 platform, it had better penetration power then the .45, also the .38 super and .45 are like the most popular handgun rounds in Mexico because they love thier custom 1911s who can blame them. But all the R&D went into the 9mm over the last 40+ years and now +p will out perform moat standard 38 auper loads.

      38 Super is the same OAL as the .45 ACP so it works in the 1911. It was introduced in 1929 for increased penetration against auto bodies. It was popular in Mexico because military calibers were/are prohibited for civilians. 9mm 1911s didn't work reliably back in the day, timing and magazine issues. Those problems have been fixed.

    Did you give the ballistics (the specs) for the cartridges being used? Hot the .38 Supers will have 150-200 ft per second faster than the hottest 9mm with same wt bullets.

    Bill Wilson talks about the ammunition needing to have a certain “ogive” not sure on the spelling but basically the angle of the actual bullet needed for proper feeding. I use Wilson Combat .38 super ammunition in my Stealth Arms 5 inch 1911 and have never had a malfunction. Also using a quality magazine.

    Hollowpoints are about expansion, 38 super goes faster so should expand better but won't penetrate as far as a lesser deforming round. If using ball 38 super will go further than the lesser powered 9mm round. 9mm has more options now for ammunition.

    I’ve never had a problem with my 1911s and hollow point ammo.Ever.I started with Super Vel ammo way back years ago,then I carried the Lawman flying ashtray round in 45acp for a long time.The flying ashtray is a huge hollow point to say the least,I never had had a failure to feed in an out of the box Colt government model .And the ammo today is even more reliable,as well as the pistols.A 1911 doesn’t like a limp wrist when being fondled.Magazines are probably the the biggest reason why failure to feed occurs in a 1911.

    The nine mm is a is a pistol play and practice round cost effective and good training round. Much like the 22lr in rifles. The 45 acp the 38 super and the fourty all have been given the same technology and there all far better than the nine mm in the real world in my experience. The nine is a country club shirt 😢😅😊

      Definitely more penetration with the 9mm, after digging the lead out I liked the .38 super expansion better. I reckon I should have put that in the video too but I didn’t dig them out right away. That being said it just could be the difference in the projectiles themselves. They looked very similar prior to impact, no so much afterwards. Overall I was very pleased with the 9mm performance though. Considering that’s my carry ammo.😂👍 Thanks for watching!

    Common with1911s? BS

  • @ardethcain18
    @ardethcain18 Рік тому +1

    With all do respect, this is not a test. At least not a scientific test. So many variables here. First, Who is the manufacture of the ammo. Second, at least give us the advertised bullet weight and velocities, Moreover these projectiles need to fired over a chronograph. Third, those hollow points do not look the same. Forth, the comment, "got a failure to feed, my understanding that's pretty common" Really?? Well, it's very common in poorly manufactures firearms or firearms modified by an incompetent individual / gun smith. I own numerous examples of 1911 / 2011 pistols, "mild to wild" chambered in 9mm, 38 super, 40 S&W, 10mm and 45acp. Some are bone stock others are examples smoothed and tuned by some of the best. Old school guys like Bob Chow R.I.P., Dan Ruff and the new school guys STI and Atlas Gun Works. all "RUN" like a Swiss sewing machine. Is it possible, just maybe... Could we try this one more time? Its always good to get pertinent / accurate information out to the gun owning populous. Thanks!

    • @WesternOutdoor
      @WesternOutdoor  Рік тому

      .38 super HP rounds are hard to come by, so this test was done with what I could find. If I ever see HP ammo again I probably will run this test again. The question about the failure to feed was that “Is that common with HP’s in a 1911’s.“ I’ve heard that from a few people. Sorry this video doesn’t meet your scientific standards 🤷🏻‍♂️
