    Thank you! I heard noise and automatically thought bearings, but I watched your video, popped the top, and found a loose weight. You've saved me a callout service charge. Great troubleshooting video! Maybe I'll make the teenagers watch it so they'll understand why I want them to stop washing unbalanced loads.

    Just wanted to give an update on my previous post 4 months ago. I used the JB Weld to attach the concrete to the tub after the anchor sheered off from a loose concrete weight. I spread it over all points the concrete came in contact with the tub. The concrete is still holding solid as ever and have not had any problems since. While I know this is not ideal, I would recommend everyone to follow the advice in the video to make sure it doesn't happen to them! I check my washer weight every month now to make sure it is still holding firm. Hope this helps anyone that may have the same situation as I. Thanks again eSpares for your great info!

    You guys just saved me a lot of money! I was experiencing a lot of noise in my GE front load washer. I thought there were worn bearings as the unit is 5 years old.
    However, I watched this video and, voila, it was a trapped bra wire which I removed with vise grip pliers. Thanks immensely, Mike Carroll

      I have just had someone have a look at my washer, the drum was very stiff to turn around so he removed the drum seal and the drum was off centre. He said it's had it.. thing is that it's not had a lot of use, so question is.... Is it beyond repair as in cost wise..

    espares, first I want to start off by telling you how amazing you guys are and your videos are equally as amazing. Thank you for taking the time to educate all of us, your videos are very informative. So the reason I started watching your videos, which are better than all others, is because I'm trying to figure what is going on with my washer and how to fix it. I have a GE front loader, WCVH6800JMR, and when it gets on the spin cycle it begins making a strange kind of knocking noise, possible drum off track, but then it begins smoking and smelling like burning rubber. From the videos I was able to check and see if it's the drum, or at least try. The drum doesn't seem to be real loose and it doesn't look like it's rubbing on the rubber seals. I did spin the tub manually and at one point I could hear where the actual tub is scraping against something on the inside and at the bo1

    Quick question: Is it normal for a brand new, just bought washing machine to squeak while spinning? (little squeak with every revolution of the drum)

    • @eSpares

      It may be the drum spindle seal is just 'bedding in' and it may improve with use.

      Well done Carol, but remember some one put that piece of plastic in with the washing. If you left a pound coin in your pocket it could knock a whole in the outer tub causing a flood and a expensive repair. So do not forget to check all pockets and tell any one else who loads the machine that if they break it they have to pay for it to be fixed. ;-)

    A well presented video. I have an integrated Zanussi ZWI 71201 WA that is only 3 years old and used by 2 people. During its cycle the machine has started to make a loud banging noise that rattles the machine, but not all the way through even when it goes to do the final spins it doesn't! There are no error messages but the time given for the cycle goes on longer ie said 8mins to go but was filling up with water and at 1min to finish took at least 10mins. A wash that said 55mins took over 2 hours. I did do a heavy wash of towels with 2 bath mats previous to this, that came out soaking, so could the machine have become unbalanced and can it be fixed? I have since tried a lighter wash but the same sort of thing happened, although the water had spun out of it this time. I have cleaned the filter. Any advise most welcome, thanks.

    Hi Guys, love your videos, they are very helpful. I used one to help me change the door seal on my LG WD-1238C and it worked great. I have another problem though. It appears that the drum is rubbing against the door seal and creating a lot of rubber dust since I changed the seal. Is there a way to reposition the drum so that there is a slight gap between the seal and the metal drum?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому +2

      Check the drum lip 'runs true' by spinning by hand. If the drum edge wobble to can use a block of wood to knock it s high spot to prevent catching. Often a new seal may be slightly more closer fit and out of balanced loads can cause it to flex and contact. This can wear a groove in the seal and gradually the problem will go away. In the meantime use a plastic scourer pad to remove any rubber that has picked up on the drum lip.

    Thanks for the great video! I wish I would have found it a bit earlier. My 3 bolts holding the concrete were very loose and one of the anchors sheered off. By tightening the other two bolts it is much better but I am afraid the give from the missing bolt will jar the others loose soon. My friend suggested JB Weld and actually bonding the concrete in place to the tub. I am trying the bond right now for the anchor. Will let that set overnight. Any thoughts on this?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  10 років тому

      Hi Tim, this can be a common problem with machines that are left to spin unattended or overnight as if they are out of balance they can shake excessively loosening the weight. If unattended you miss the noise it makes until the damage is done. Not sure how effective your repair will be but to prevent damaging your machine in the future watch our video:

    I'm hoping that someone reading this can offer a little advice for me. About 6 months ago, I replaced the bearings on my lg front loader and everything was going fine until recently I got an 'LE' error and so I replaced the hall effect sensor and while putting the rotor assembly back onto the machine, I noticed that the barrel slid forward and I know that it will get tightened back into position once I tighten the 17mm screw on the rotor assembly. But I'm curious to know if the barrel should be moving at all, even prior to tightening that bolt? If it shouldn't be sliding then what is it that I don't have correctly tightened? When replacing the bearings, I made sure to get EVERYTHING back snug and in position just like I found it when taking the machine apart but if I missed something then what was it?

  • @missymfuller

    I washed a heavy blanket in my front load and it was too much for it. It made loud noise in last spin and slightly broke something between the 2 drums as I have gotten a couple grey plastic pieces out of the area near the pump. It only makes noise with a load after this happened. what would be between the drums that would have broke and what do I likely need to replace due to such an event? Thank you for any help!

    • @demaXxXx
      @demaXxXx 5 років тому

      For you my answer is probably too late. The drum rubbing against the housing would cause "Grey Plastic" to settle in the drain line. The loud bang is most likely a broken (or partially broken) spider, if so the problem will just worsen. The spider is what holds the drum from touching the housing. The spin speed will determine the distance of travel between the drum & the housing.

    +eSpares Do you know what the black powdery-tar stuff in the back of the washing machine is?
    I was looking around the washing machine is because it was making a banging/knocking noise on the spin cycle, my first thought was; loose drum weight, but wasn't. So, I thought maybe the bearings have gone, and that's when I came into contact with this black powder, all over the panel that I took off, all over machine floor. Best way to describe it, is powdered charcoal.
    So, is there to any clue as to what it is?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      +luke dodd The motor carbon brushes wear away like brake pads on a car and will leave a black dust. Also if concrete weights come loose these can bang and chip leaving a grey dust usually near the front of the drum. To prevent your machine banging on spin see another video: ua-cam.com/video/uKBy-9NEF5A/v-deo.html

    Hello, I have an LG WM2010. I had issues with the bearings this past spring, and I saw your videos and replaced them myself! Thank you! Thank you! Currently, my machine, when starting the load, will spin quietly in one direction (clockwise), but when it needs to spin in the opposite direction, it makes a terrible noise. It looks like the machine is having a difficult time, almost like it's slipping and struggling to spin. Could this be a rotor issue? There are no error codes on the front panel.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      +Cali Nekko The problem is likely to be the motor position sensor (www.espares.co.uk/product/es1523400) this detects the magnetic field from the motor rotor to help the control board pulse the correct windings and control the speed.

      +Fred Neal: First check if something is catching or rattling if it rattles put your head in the drum to locate which paddle is rattling as it may be loose or have something in it. Look on our website at the images for the paddle as if it only shows clips you may be able to remove it as shown in a similar video:
      ua-cam.com/video/V-kIP83a4RU/v-deo.html
      If there is something stuck and catching under the drum you may be able to fish it out by removing the heater, see another video for information:

    What is it if my lg machine is squeaking going round ? It’s definitely not the bearings I don’t think as no movement or noises just like a rubber rubbing against the drum except for it’s not it’s got quite a big gap.
    I had a look this morning with a mag light I could see everything nothing in there. It’s only 2/3 years old.

    If there are no drum bearing sounds and spins by hand freely, what's a good way to check? We've rebuilt this machine, I know the drain cleaning technique and frequently do so, its tight on door lock and has no rust. The electronic controls seem to work well, constantly get the door and drain error. I clear those and it will work fine via boards, tested circuitry all normal. The drum just stopped spinning and I've not had luck finding troubleshooting or testing. I'm grateful if you have any additional ideas or suggestions since you seem to you know more than I've seen previously after exhaustive searches. Thanks in advance.

      Before suspecting the control panel if the machine appears to have a drum motor problem it is worth replacing the motor sensor. This may be the cause and is a lot cheaper to try than a control board.

    Thanks for the vid! Do you have any idea what might cause a stuck drum? There are no perferations, it isn't loose like demonstrated on 1:28, but it doesn't spin, either freely and by force. Upon opening of the back part of the machine I've discovered that the wheel that's connected to the motor by the rubber belt does spin, but it doesn't convert to the drum. Should I just get a new machine, if the problem is with the bearings?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      +Gloomy Moonie If the pulley on the back turns but the drum doesn't then the spider that supports the drum on the drum shaft must have broken. It is usually possible to replace this but it means dismantling completely as in our bearing video: ua-cam.com/video/XaFF2-Rl8Nc/v-deo.html
      This is not usually for the inexperienced novice but can be done if you are prepared.

      +eSpares that was quick, thanks! I'd be glad to do it myself, problem is that I find it quite unlikely to be able to find replacement parts where I'm from, given that the existence of dedicated washing machine shops is something that I've only now discovered. Of course I'll try asking a technitian, but from what I gather just having him look at the thing would cost more than 10% of a brand new machine, not to even mention the fixing itself. Can't say the work doesn't worth the pay, there's obviously a lot of expertise involved, as demonstrated by the video you've linked to by the way, but the as it seems in my case I would end up paying near as much as I would pay for a new machine. Thank you for the videos though, if I had the leverage of the tools and the convenience of the replacement parts I would have found them indispensable. Cheers!

      eSpares Excellent video, very helpful details. I remove my washer/dryer each year, clean and check using a large brush, then replace the flex tube if needed on the dyer. Blow out the dryer and exhust vent of built up lint. I have seen many dryer fires, neglected cleaning and lint build up. I am a retired firefighter, so have seen a few. Unfortunately more common than many realize. I have seen a dishwasher fire, caused by a mouse chewing a wire. Dead mousie, fire self contained and went out. But the dead mouse hanging onto the wire was a sight.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому

      Hi Liljenny, have a look at the movement on the drum lip between the bottom of the door seal. If the gap changes enough to contact the seal when you apply pressure on the drum and there is play allowing the gap to change more than a millimetre or so then the problem may be worn bearings so see this video: ua-cam.com/video/XaFF2-Rl8Nc/v-deo.html
      if the drum lip does not 'run true' when spun and the gap opens and closes as the drum is out os shape it can be knocked with a mallet to even the gap. If both previous checks are OK it is probably due to an out of balance load so clean any rubber from the lip and watch this video:

    I own a washing machine LG wd65130fu. It is washing fine but the problem is that the machine
    is not steady. It is moving during washing. I have replaced drum's supporters, springs, V belt but still nothing. I watched both Josh's and Matt's videos but it doesn't seem to have problem with the bearings. I did the tests suggested from Josh in this video from 0.45-1.45 and it is ok.

    which part is faulty? Thanks

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  5 років тому

      Hi rori, there is a difference between the cabinet and the drum, if you are sure it is not an unblanaced load causing it are you sure the machine is perectly level? if the drum is misaligned that could be caused by the bearings or something inside the drum.

    What I would like to know is, if the drum drops and there is a noise when in the wash cycle does that mean it's the bearings? can it be a broken spring or belt that has caused the drum to drop? it seems that its the only reason that's given which basically is saying "your washer is finished, buy a new one" but can it be anything else but the bearings? A spoon was recently put in the laundry and when I heard the banging on my Frigidaire front loader during the spin cycle I shut the washer off to remove the spoon. shortly after during another load when I turned it back on I heard a banging like the drum was hitting against something. I think I broke something when I shut it off and I do not think its the bearings, I think maybe a spring or something which held the drum up. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому

      +loosecannon574 By simply taking the top of the machine you can see if a spring has broken as the drum would be much lower on one side. If a belt broke there would be no drive to the drum. The video shows the effect of worn bearings at 1:28 the play is specifically between the drum edge and the door seal not the general drum movement. If you cave this play then the bearings are definitely shot and require replacement.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  7 років тому

      Hi Chip, the tub is only 'hung' on the suspension springs so will easily rock backwards and forwards. If you disconnect and take the top off you can shake the drum vertically by pressing hard on the top and 'bouncing' it to check the dampers underneath. The drum should resist movement and stop quickly when bounced showing the dampers. If there is no loose weights and the dampers and bearings are OK the problem may just be an out of balance load so watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/uKBy-9NEF5A/v-deo.html

    Hello, I have a question to the experts on a strange issue :)
    My Electrolux suddenly started making a hollow pop noise, same as when a metal flexes.
    Iv checked the bearings, no leaks. It spinns perfectly when no load in it, or at high speeds. But when turning slowly with clothes and they drop the sound arrives.
    If I slowly turn the drum and keep pushing down on the drum rim, sooner or later the pop comes. I can then turn the drum 180 degrees(half turn) and press down again, and the drum wil pop again. So it seems there is some unbalance at that spesific place over the drum. Except from that the drum is secured and the bearing seems solid, with no sideways play(except for the 2 points) that normalt is a tell for the bearing.
    Any idea what this strange thing can be?

      +Jenny Boles Hi Jenny, sorry for the late reply. If the drum is catching pop your head inside and try to identify where and if it moves. If it is a harsh scrape it may be something like a bra underwire whereas a item of clothing like a sock will rub. look through the holes with a torch and see if you can move the item with a small drill bit or rod. You may be able to remove it either round the front edge, by removing the heater or removing the sump hose for access.

      Hi 08SammyCakes, my first question would be what happened in the move, make sure you have not left the transit bolts in and is it level? where it is and finally check for any internal damage to the suspension or concrete weights.

    • @08SammyCakes
      @08SammyCakes 6 років тому

      Thank you for the response. We began moving the washer from my laundry room to the door when we realized the transition bolts were not in so they were put in place after the washer was already moved a few feet across a small living area. Once the bolts were placed in, the machine was moved down 1 flight of apt stairs on a dolly. It didn’t fall or strike anything on the way down but maybe the transport down the stairs shook up the machine a little. I can tell it is not leveled on the floor of my new place but the inner tub (where the clothes go) looks to be shifted out of place.

    Drum bearing is fairly good very little play. Noise is louder than new ones.
    Main control module ok.
    Front display. And filter pcb good.
    Although I have ordered replacement bearing Kit with spider arm. Next time I open I will try to replace them.

      Hi Siddique, there are only two reasons why there would be smoke inside the drum. If immediately after a spin there is smoke in the drum check for signs of small grey rubber bits around the door seal as this can be caused by clothing rubbing on the door seal. This would usually be caused by overloading.
      If there can be smoke when you just power the machine it would suggest the heater is coming on when it should not. If this is the case the problem must be the control board.

    What's the fix if there is a wide gap between the drum and the door seal and it's eating/damaging my clothes?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Oliver, if the door seal has worn it may create a gap allowing the clothes to go down nut the only fix is to replace it, is there any movement in the drum?

    • @oliver_siegel
      @oliver_siegel 4 роки тому

      @@eSpares hmm it doesn't appear to be in need of replacement. There is some movement back and forth for the drum.
      Once it ate a pair of underwear that clogged everything up, but I think it was because I loaded it too full. I found one T-shirt damaged, which I believe I also washed in that load...
      How much back and forth movement should there be in the drum? Wondering about that is what lead me to this video.
      Bearing seems alright. Not brand new, but not horribly noisy either...

      Hi Oliver, it may suggest the bearings but have a look at this video to show you ua-cam.com/video/XaFF2-Rl8Nc/v-deo.html

    My bra wire's gotten into the drum somehow. We noticed a horrible noise when the machine was in use, and lo and behold, one of my wires is missing. Drained the filter and a medium sized piece of it was sitting there waiting to greet me.
    There's also one hole that has been perforated by the wire, as you've said - the surface is very rough. At this point, what can be done because the remaining wire is probably in the machine? I've felt around the drum and it's definitely gone. This is a brand new (just over a month old) machine so my mum's quite upset about this. :c It's a Panasonic machine, if that makes a difference.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому +1

      Hi Lishaaaaaaa, To repair the drum perforation an engineer would gently use the top of a cross headed screwdriver to carefully rotate and wear down the sharp edge.
      The missing piece of wire will usually work down into the filter and as may stop the machine from emptying but should eventually be able to be removed.
      If you have 'Insurance' for an extended repair warranty many will cover 'accidental damage' of this type but the 12 month warranty is unlikely to cover this.

      Thank you so much! I really appreciate the quick and informative reply. We gave the machine a cursory (and empty!) run and the noise has stopped, so I'll check the filter again.
      Will definitely recommend you guys to my friends and family.

    I just replaced a safety switch on washing lid..I tore it apart....long story short....it was only two screws on top of tub frame. (It finished putting it back together WITH 5 SCREWS REMAINING!° Saved a lot of money. It is so old I had to splice wires as plug in swtch didnt work (one longer than other so I figured that out).
    It is so old. Live and lear . I never said I was a washing machine tech.

    Hi there my washing machine is making grinding noise when draining the water out.i m really frustrated right now please help

  • @Lord_Lombardi

    What if the drum is stuck rigid? I checked the belt, the heater, looked for stuck clothes around the drum, and looked in the hose for underwear that might be stuck there. All of that is clear, but the drum just won’t roll. Not even by hand, it’s impossible. It wasn’t particularly noisy before it stopped spinning, so idk if getting to the bearings is even worth all the trouble because I’m not sure that’s the problem.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  5 років тому

      Hi Ray, it definitely sounds like you have something trapped inside as it is unusual for the bearings to seize the drum unless they had been noisy for ages, you need to get inside to check and the best way is to remove the heater as that will give you some access to find if there is something in there.

    • @Lord_Lombardi
      @Lord_Lombardi 5 років тому

      eSpares thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, as I mentioned, I already looked into (removed) the heater and found nothing there. I also ran a zip-tie across the rim between the inner and outer drum to see if there was something I could feel which was stuck in there, but nothing 🤷🏻‍♂️.

      Hi Ray, if you have tried everything else then the only other way would be to take out the drum.

    Hello, my washer is called Candy Rapid Ó, when drum is spun by hand it starts to make a grinding noise but then stops right after, on normal cycles its silent.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  4 роки тому

      Hi Random, have you checked for something inside making the noise first, it still could be the bearings starting to fail but you would normally get the noise during the spin cycle.

    hi my aeg washmachine at times behaves very unbalanced, when it starts to spin at times the drum almost knocks out the side cover plate sheet, then it stops the movement and tries again. My problem is, that the machine tries too long to establish the balance, I wonder what it may cause to the cover from inside. I think it knocks down the paitn at least, if it doesn't do greater problem.
    What might be the possible cause?
    May it be loose weight?
    All this started shortly after we've bought the machine.
    Thank You.

      eSpares hi, thanks for the tip. Actually I've checked the concrete weigth and it's ok. My problem is, that it's quite a long time before the machine "notices" that it's unbalanced, and throughout this time period the machine crazily and loudly kicks himself almost into pieces; you can actually see the drum coming out on the side cover sheet of the machine....
      All this time the machine is level, and the whole structure does not move; just the drum.
      My former machine was a cheaper but a more clever one, because he realised he's unbalanced; and had the procedure stopped in time.
      So I wonder might it be a problem of a sensor or something in the electronics, or is it the normal way of sensing the unbalanced load?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  10 років тому

      Leopold. Varga Most machines do spot out of balance but if the drum dampers are connected and resist the movement when you push the drum up and down (not back and forth) then it is not likely to be the machines fault. This problem is less likely to occur with a small drum but gets greater the larger the drum and higher the spin speed.The fact the machine sometimes stops from spinning is telling you that you have loaded it incorrectly and the only cure for this is how you load the machine.

    Great video. But, the drum on my washing machine has stopped rotating or moving at all. It had been very noisy last 2 weeks. Bearings?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому +2

      Check the belt has not come off and when at the back if bearings are worn if someone gently lifts the drum lip at the front the large drum pulley will tilt if badly worn. Also check it is not just a loose pulley on the drum shaft.

    We took off the top, and there aren't any weights. We did find a broken spring. If we fix that, how will we know if anything else was damaged when it broke?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      Hi, In order to be able to identify your machine we will need a model number.
      At a guess you have had something heavy in the load that has not balanced and caused damage to the suspension.
      See our video on balanced loads at: ua-cam.com/video/uKBy-9NEF5A/v-deo.html

      eSpares Hey, I'm having the same problem with my Samsung model # WF350ANP/AA02washing machine. I have already replaced the shocks and it still making the noise at the height of the spin cycle. I don't have the movement with the drum or grinding sound when spun by hand. The springs are in great shape and I as well as this person do not have a weight on top. The machine is only about 4-5 years old. Any suggestions

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      Genevieve Rose The good news is there may be nothing wrong with the machine. The bad news is it may be you. See another one of our videos: ua-cam.com/video/uKBy-9NEF5A/v-deo.html
      Any time you notice a noisy spin if this is the problem the evidence will be in the drum when the machine stops.

    I have an ageing Brandt WTC12995 top loading washing machine and when trying to unload 2 sopping wet pillows, I opened the drum, but the heavy pillows forced it to return to its original position, with the entrance open underneath and stuck! Is there any way that I can get at the drum entrance?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  5 років тому

      Hi Tony, if you take the side panel off you can get to the drum pulley, this will allow you to turn the pulley to re position the drum back to it's correct position, be careful as it may have damaged the drum flaps and it will be difficult to move.
