awesome video. Love to always see the the old abandon ranch house and it will be a shame when they disappear please keep what your doing, and love the hunting
I totally agree! We absolutely love seeing them when we’re out cruising around the mountains 😊 I just love picturing what life would have looked like when they were in use 😊
My wife’s from Central Oregon. We talk about heading over that way. Your ride gave us some nice insight, thanks.. Weather looked perfect and the mules are solid. And, good lookers.. Keepm coming!
Thank you so much for watching and taking time to leave a nice comment! We love that high desert country over there. And yes, the weather was amazing and it was sooo green over there this year 😊 We’re sure thankful for our mules! Hope you guys have a great trip over there!
Awesome ride along. Are you aware of any books on the history of the Riddle ranch or ranching in Eastern Oregon? I can’t wait to see this country! I have forgotten to ask in other comments I’ve left, is your Aussie a standard, how old is he or she and what is his or her name? Love those Aussies!
There’s a really cool book called, Steens Mountain: In Oregon’s High Desert Country. It goes over a lot of the history over there and I think it covers the Riddle brothers 😊 Our mini Aussie is named squirrel, and he’s so much fun. He’s just 10 months old 😊
@@MTN_BUILT Thank you for the reply and I’ll look for it a used book store I periodically visit. Squirrel is a great name and I’m sure he’s a ton of fun energy!
@@MTN_BUILTI was able to find the book you recommended and have read about half of it. It’s a great read and the pictures and associated captions are very well done. Thank you for the recommendation!
My goal is to ride there also. I live in John Day. I have been via vehicle but never via mule. Hopefully within the next couple of years I can make it there with my mule in tow. Sherri
Oh cool! John Day is beautiful! We really like that country. I hope you make it happen. We’ve always gone via vehicle too, but it was sure fun to finally ride in that country! 😊
It actually comes from a dun gene that is present in donkeys and can be present in horses as well. We never saw her mom, but we’re guessing she was dun colored 😊 A little striping is common in mules, but her stripes are especially pronounced!
We use Standlee weed free hay! Yes it is more expensive but on National Forest and in Wilderness areas and State Parks you have to feed certified weed free hay 😊
The horses on a hi line, when do they get time to lie down for sleep if you keep the leads short to reduce the chance of them getting tangled? seeing more and more about horses needing at least 30 minutes of recumbent sleep a day for healthy sleep cycle. They can go a week without but it's healthier for them if they get the chance every day, and feel safe enough, to lie down for a short portion of rem sleep.
Great question! Thats a super good point 😊 We let ours have a bunch of slack whenever we’re around camp, so they’ll usually lay down during that time. Honestly, you could probably leave them enough slack to lay down and they wouldn’t get tangled- it just makes us a little nervous.
drove across country a few years back , saw some places rotting away but I thought what were they like back in the day. Peoples hopes and dreams , not famous just a home .

Whe does the buckskin have stripes on its legs?

Beautiful!!!!! The hay you use. What type? Isn’t buying hay that is baled like that more expensive? If so what benefits do you feel to justify it?

Those areas look pretty remote do you carry weapons for protection
We do! I’d feel pretty unprepared without one 😊

It’s so interesting to try to put yourself in the shoes of the pioneers that claimed that country. They were a lot tougher than I am, that’s for sure!
Do mules ride like horses are they any better or worse
They do especially in rough country.
I’d say in general mules are more steady in rough country, but if you want any speed horses would be better 😊
Yes!!! 😊🙌🏼
Thanks for all the feedback I hope you have a great day looking forward to the next video
