He may only have 60 or 70 rides on him but "how" you rode him for those rides has already put a lot of quality in him. He is looking really good. I have seen horses with 90 rides on them that didn't look that good. Especially that loped circle toward the end of the video where you had him on super light contact (it looked like), yet he was still in frame/collection. It looked like you might have been able to go full loose rein and he would still have held himself in frame at the lope. He side passed to that gate very nicely as well. Especially since he is only 3 years old.
I totally agree with your statement that you don’t create a good horse out of nothing. Each horse already has a goodness in him. A good horseman knows how to pull that out of him. Lots of patience and training.
I have to say when I clicked on this video I expected to see more rodeo "cowboy" horse abuse. But here you were, using a mild bit, without any flashy spurs, giving the horse clear directions and waiting for his response. Great work! He's a lucky one.
That horse will absolutely move into curb bits as his education progress’s to go into one hand, that’s not abuse if you think it is then god help us all
I have 2 Hancock horses, they are awesome horses, they really come on as a 5 yr old, smart, tough and kind. They like to have a job, as any horse does.
Love watching videos like this…from American western riders…while sitting here in Germany. Seriously tho, I love your riding style it’s so harmonic. Pretty horse as well.
My Friend Hello Tony here That's a nice did i say nice horse You can tell he is young and not finished no one in this comments should give nothing but praise keep on doing what ever you are doing thx. Thx. Tony
Cowboys are the current evolution of the Spanish military troop called Dragon de Cuera, they used to patrol the border of the Spanish territories in North America from de XVI to the XVIII century, Chilenan and Argentinian Gauchos and Mexican vaqueros are also part of it.
Just found your channel subbed ❤I miss my ranch and my horses , so this is nice to see you sharing your life on the ranch with us all , brings back so many memories !!you are a very patient kind cowboy to your horses……
Just a good animal for a damned good man. He looks for the best in the horse and apparently he found more than he thought he would. I ride but I have never owned a horse but I would look for something like this.
First time seeing one of your videos. Beautiful camera work! Got a really unique perspective on everything you did while riding; most videos shoot from top-down on the arena, sometimes it's hard to catch all the small cues, especially during cantering. Camera man had to be dizzy!! Applaud to you both, best of luck with that go-getter colt!
Thanks for this video! Trained some good huntin dogs and just getting into horses. It’s interesting to watch people train horses and to see the differences and parallels in the animals and how to handle them.
You have a great relationship with horses ! Nice to see! I have a BlueRoan Hancock ! He's very cowey! He's got a gorgeous temperament He's not registered but I love him anyways ❤
My thoughts are: he needs a little more engagement when striking-off at the lope. When this happens for you, it should be accompanied with softness that will change his entire perspective on forward movement. `Really nice job getting him to ths point in his training..
He's a really pretty colt! I have an American Curly x Waler x TBred mare, she cost me $800 and has been a lot of work, but she's coming real good now! She always has had a "go button" (Thoroughbred Genetics) and used to be really spooky to boot, with a lot of desensitization and riding, she's not as spooky as she was and after walking her two miles every single workday for a whole month, she's fine to walk now. She still loves to trot, still has that "go button" but now I'm not fighting her when all I want to do is walk! We've been doing walking and trotting for about 5 or 6 weeks now (weather interfered with some scheduled training days) and so in a few days, I'm going to walk her a mile, trot two miles, then ask for a canter and just see what she does... Yep, I know what she'll do. She's been telling me she wants to go but has been respectful enough to stay in a trot anyway. That's what I'm looking for and I can just sense it, she's so ready, and so am I!
This Young Horse has a lot of potential and the old saying goes registered papers and bloodlines are wonderful but you don't ride papers . But a good horse with some decent ability can be developed and built up with some miles if it has a proper attitude and willingness to work and listen.
On days like tht stretch out his chest he’s stiffed legged, grab a hoof till he stop pulling away, then bend the leg back grab the knee & hoof shake it back n forth Both sides…….
@Stonefieldranch Actually, my horse was formerly a rodeo horse. I don't know if it was roping or wrangling. It tends to ride off as soon as I mount her and wants to canter or gallup all the time. I have 2 daughters and would like for them to be able to ride it. How can I get the horse to go slow?
Happy to help! A few follow-up questions: 1. How old is your horse? 2. Mare or Gelding? 3. What kind of rig setup are you using? (Ie. What kind of bit, reins, saddle pad, cinch, saddle)? And do you know what kind of setup the previous owner was running? 4. What is his diet like right now? Alfalfa or grass? Are you graining him? Might be easier If you want to send pictures/video send to: Stonefieldranchproductions@gmail.com
He seems to do better at faster gaits with holding himself upright, I've heard that's common with younger horses. Do you think he's breaking at the poll a little when you collect him due to him being younger and lacking in proper strength to carry himself collected yet?
So I'm somewhat experienced with horses I can get a horse where I need it and I've never had any issues getting horse to do what I need it to but I've recently been trying to train my girlfriends horse and every little thing is a struggle he has no go in him whatsoever, got any tips? He's had nothing but ground work for 9 years before that I believe he was rode a little but not enough to count
Tail is either bagged or up high in a top knot so he doesn’t step on it while backing. Not taped. Yeah they have names. This one just doesn’t have one yet so I call him Dunny. Appropriate in most country’s except Australia.🇦🇺
Mostly self taught but I definitely watch others and try to learn from them. I ride and train every day and usually start a few colts every year. Thanks for tuning into the channel!
@@Stonefieldranch thought so! Picked up the midnight grimshaw myself! Glad to see more people wearing their brand. Awesome Channel by the way. Love what you’re doing here.
If you want a horse to last, maybe give them another year or so before you ride them hard like ranch boys do. They will last longer if their knees can close and spine develope before then.
He actually looks like he's on a fairly loose rein, green horses tend to break at the poll because they lack the strength for proper collection I believe.
I understand there are different schools of thought here and a lot of people don't like you to look down but a horses ears and head are like a dash display in a race car. They tell me a lot about how things are running and how tuned in we are in addition to how the ride feels. On the race track (arena) practicing laps, I pay pretty close attention to these.
Have you ridden any horses that run off?! Oh yea i dont have to ask that - obviously not. A bit is only as aggressive as the riders hands but its there if/when he needs it. That horse is quite comfotable with that bit - again..... obviously. Tell me justaverage6347 - have you so much as halter broke a baby? If so Ouch that halter is unnecessary! Unless you arent using it cruelly. Get it?
@@valrenanelson5507 actually, yes I have halter broke a baby. This horse needs more ground work! A twisted bit is waaay to harsh for any horses mouth. Have a nice day.
I respect the opinion, but disagree. Groundwork is important but only takes you so far. This horse is a perfect gentleman at a walk and trot but panicking every time I pushed him into a lope and went into a runaway. He’s in a twisted wire because he tried running himself through a barbed wire fence when he had a regular O-Ring Snaffle. Temporary discomfort is always a better alternative than permanent injury. Every morning I run a mile in a 20 pound vest and soak in 36 degree water for 5-7 minutes. It’s uncomfortable, but I’m better for it. Reaching our potential lies on the other side of discomfort. Undisciplined horses and people never reach their potential.
3yrs old? A 16 stone man thumping on his back at 3yrs old? That kind of treatment leads to broken down 7-8yr olds. The horse (any horse) tries bc he has no alternative
I wonder 7:137:13 at 70 rides can you drag calves to the fire on the horse. Does it neck rein yet for you don't have to ride it with 2 hands and actually get something done on the horse. Hancocks may have had a time and place but today there's not near enough cowboys or miles for them. 4500 for that horse was a steal for whoever sold that.horse.to you lol. No offense of course lol
Every horse has their place, Brother. Just like people, everyone can make a contribution and we increase their likelihood of success with education. Takes some of them longer than others and sometimes the ones that take a little longer become the best ones. Pushing a horse to neck rein and rope as fast as possible isn’t my first goal. I want him correct. That’s why I ride colts in snaffle bits for the first two years. He’ll learn to neck rein when he’s ready. I’m focused on picking up shoulders, collection, directing the feet, and building their confidence. Others may have different goals. Also, it’s winter. We don’t brand calves in the winter. He’ll sort some this winter and brand this spring.
You don’t have true horsemanship without the original cowboy. You have bad and abusive trainers in ALL facets of the horse world. So don’t just point out the cowboy because they are probably the closest you can get to a horse in human form.

@@BuckinroperEveryone on YT does, if you catch my drift.
Real rodeo cowboys do not abuse their horses. They’re just as much horseman as ranchers are. Educate yourself.
