- Darkglass's only compressor is the subject of our latest in depth analysis. The Hyper Luminal has an innovative hybrid design that gives you all the control of digital modeling with a completely analog signal path. It does subtle smoothing, it does limiting and saturation, it does clean and clear peak reduction. I do a lot of talking.
FET, SYM or BUS? Which is the setting to rule them all?

I'm so confused. You make unbelievably musical, well produced and especially played demos and have very few subs, while there's a ton of guys out there with less skills (bass most importantly, but also production) with busy channels. Keep it up and I hope the best for you!
I appreciate it. I’m relatively new to the game, and glad folks like you are stopping in to see what I’m up to. Thanks for the kind words!
Maybe it's because this is a channel that is interesting to actual Bass players and not so much for fanboys?
I always wonder the same thing. His production as just as top-flight as well?!?!? We're rooting for you Amos! Please stay at it! You'll break-through.
Compare to Ross original and script logo dyna-comp pls
@@OlavSchneiderreally???? Just for bass players??? I use one and have played guitar for Ray Charles, Stephen Stills, Loggins. So before you dis ANYBODY. Think about being kind, helpful, positive and productive...like our host here. Thank you
By far the best review/demo of the hyper luminal. 👍
Thanks so much!
Thank you Amos! You are amazing! More than anything i like your videos for the pleasing musical sound, your bass playing and your unique humor 🎉
This is the best review I've seen of this compressor. Very detailed and clear. Thanks!
I bought this pedal after watching this video. Thank You so much, I absolutely love it.
I was sold on the FET mode after watching this, but after messing with it, BUS is actually my favorite set at 4:1. Blend, Compression and Output set at 2 o'clock, and time at 10 o'clock.
Amos, man, your demos are informative and entertaining; and I LOVE that you play outside the fuzzy percussive space occupied by most Darkglass demonstrators.
This is the first live-use compressor that I haven’t just wanted to turn off because it’s killing my dynamics.
Thank you. Glad it was helpful.
Between the modes, GR meter and mix knob it’s really easy to keep the dynamics of your playing. I was surprised by this one.
Your sub count should be 100x what it is. A big fan of your demos
Thanks so much!
Man that second example with the Nordstrand was absolutely awesome. Really great tone and even better playing man, perfect demo.
Killing it Brother!!! All of your videos are inviting, well produced and your playing and production are top notch!! The variety of examples that you've taken time to share has enabled me to hear very clearly how a number of these creations can and will fit within my own world of music. Thank you Big-time for all of your info and much continued success to you!!
Well shoot! Thank you so much! Appreciate you stopping by and more to come!
@@AmosHeller True Hipness Brother! You're very welcome and I'm looking forward 👊🏾!
Just got one. Reviewing this vid to learn the best way for me to use it. Excellent job, as always, Amos.
Hey @AmosHeller, great demo, thanks! I think you've misunderstood how the sidechain works though. It takes a copy of input signal, applies a high-pass filter on it and uses that to trigger the comp. All your low-end is still compressed together with other frequencies. The benefit of this is that the very loud low-end and sub-bass frequencies do not trigger the comp too early. A neat feature to have on bass, used a lot in the studio work AFAIK.
Fantastic work as usual. Keep the reviews coming.
I will! Thank you.
Absolutely amazing review.
Thanks for your demos… it’s great to learn all this info from a professional like you
That Musicman setting was lush. That alone is the reason I’m going to get one of these pedals. The all in is pure punch your face in tone. Love it. Thanks Amos
Awesome playing, as always! 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
Thank you for the single best explination of this pedal and how to go about figuring it out
Glad it’s helpful!
Pretty sure that Charisma stat should be at least an 18.
Awesome stuff as always!
Roll Persuasion at advantage. Target is Charmed. Thanks!!
Finally got my HL the other day after watching your video countless of times before the purchase and during the waiting time 😅. Thanks a lot Amos for a great review, it helped a lot. I'm very impressed with the HL and I can't wait to get more and more comfortable with it 😎
Congrats! It’s a great piece.
Very good review 👌🏿👌🏿
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
I’m finally getting back into bass. Got a DG AO, ordering this to compliment it. Thank you for this amazing breakdown and your great channel - I’m now a subscriber :).
How did they end up together? Currently thinking of doing the same
Killer demo- also love the stat roll 😂😂
Thanks! Glad you caught it.
Love the D&D reference
Relieved someone got it. You rolled high perception!
The real hero of the Eras tour.
It really is like having a tiny 1176 on the pedal board. A Rickenbacker sounds incredible through it.
The all in mode plus my Dingwall = mojo
Cool review!
great demo!
Ah another Souls fan, I see. Big fan of your work, always very informative without being overwhelming, great playing that is a bit different from what most reviewers/demoers play, and a few quirks and funny bits for good measure. Didn't mean to review a demo channel but I guess I just did.
Nicely done. You knocked this one out of the park. INSTANT SUBSCRIBE!
The psychic touch plate part always cracks me up, lol.
Ya sold me. I went and got one. Thanks!
awesome review! love your character stats added under your name plate lol
Thank you Amos. Compression is very confusing to me and you have helped clear up alot of confusion on my end. I'm glad I purchased this pedal as I've bought and resold many before. I think I have found my "soul" compressor. ;-) Cheers!
I don't know a lot about compression and I have a couple that other than sustain I can't tell much difference.I bought the Hyper Luminal and what I can tell is that it makes my sound better, just more substantial with better definition.
As long as it sounds better, what else do you *need* to know? 😎
Thank you!
Killer intro song! Typical excellent Amos video!
Thanks!!
Great video man, extremely informative!
Kade
Thanks Kade!
I agree there is a learning curve. At first try I did not get it. But once dialed in it stays on.
Agreed. It’s complex and takes attention and time to learn. Like anything worthwhile!
Thanks for the awesome review! It would be really nice if you can compare this one with the Empress Comp MK2.
I’d love to! Don’t have one is the only thing...
Ooooh, the Time knob on this is the same as the ATT/REL knob on a Cali76 Compact Bass. I honestly avoided the Hyper Luminal because my Super Symmetry has both an attack and release. If it is similar to a Cali76 Compact Bass, then that may change my view a little bit.
It's a little late though, as I just moved to an Empress Effects Bass Compressor because my Super Symmetry had started to make noise as the gain reduction LEDs turn off , and... whoa boy, that thing is a dream come true. If you ever come across one, Amos, give it a look!
Thank you for the great explanation. I purchased this pedal and had a hard time "getting" it. Ive got a much better educated grasp on it now. Subbed, thumbs up etc......P.S,you forgot to mention same pedal also doubles as a guitar compressor too via DG website
Thank you! Glad to be of help!
What a amazing review
Hey thanks!
Thx for that review! :)
Nice review!! It would have been more helpful though if you used the Music Man and dynamic playing on FET to compare the 3 comp modes. It would have shown way more how the BUS and SyM work. I own the HL and 2 years later i am still discovering new magic working on it!! So many possibilities!! Keep posting your amazing reviews!
Awesome video dude! How does it compare to the built-in compressor on the ADAM?
Excellent demo. Which is the setting to rule them all? This pedal is just too good - I have it on SYM, turn all the dials to 12o'clock, set the output to match, ratio 2, and have a phobia of even opening the DG suite. However that FET 'all-in' setting in this video just sounded so good, I may have to step out of my comfort zone and start tweaking.
I've played bass for 31 years with no compressor. Somehow I feel like I need this unit even though I would have no idea how to use it effectively.
Hey Amos,
Big deal here! What's best in your opinion: the Cali76 Compact Deluxe/Bass, or the Hyper Luminal (given that the Darkglass emulates the tone of the 1176, which is the inspiration of the Cali76)?
Anyway, thanks for the demo, YOU have been amazing ;)
Amos...I have one...and...I love it...!!!
Awesome!
I bought one of these about two months ago and I LOVE it! Especially the FET setting. Just one question: How many HP do you have?
Only 35 but my AC is high :)
I love your zoolander playing faces
Amos! That intro though!… wow man, that sounded great. As a bass player who uses a handful of effect pedals, do you suggest putting the comp at the beginning or end of the chain? When I use a rat type pedal, I will ride the bass volume so I understand that the comp will affect that aspect of that, but otherwise, what are your thoughts? Also, where does one find a VU meter that’s easy to use in this situation? Did you mean an analog ,enter or something in an application on the computer. Thirdly, if the root word of computer is comp, does that mean that it is also compressing something? Thanks for the great content! I always look forward to seeing what you’re up to. I need a Mr. know it all in my life like in the rocky and bullwinkle cartoons.. I have so many questions
So this is one of the Great Bass Gear Questions: comp at beginning or end?
Personally? I like the end. It “glues” the sound together, can help make impactful effect changes stay at useable levels, and you get all the dynamic richness of a drive/fuzz/distortion reacting to your playing, but still get a nice push back. I love playing into compression. There’s certainly upsides to putting it first, too, depending what other effects you’re using (especially delays and reverbs, as compression after these can affect feedback/reverb tails). In the end, if it’s not too much trouble, try it both ways and see what you think!
@@AmosHeller Amos, thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. I kinda figured that the comp at the end of the chain would make more sense… at least for what I’m doing anyway. I have the big box limited edition origin cali76 and it cool but I wanted to try something different to compare. I’m still trying to figure out the differences between that one and an optical comp and which would feel better. Thanks again 🫡
subbed
I love that you call them psychic touch pads haha
;-) Thx for your excellent work. BTW, what means " STR 12 DEX 14 CON 11 INT 15 WIS 4 Cha 17 " , [blush].
It’s a spread of ability scores for dungeons and dragons. Just a little nerd bait.
@@AmosHeller he he, It's been a long time since I have heard about that kind if geekeries ;-) _ keep on the great work. And have a great simple different year.
LOL Auf Wiedersehen, made my day
It had me is Hyper Luminal... The Alpha Omega Ultra replaced my beloved MXR M80. Could this be coming for my M87? Is compression at the front of the chain and again on the way out plain crazy talk?
I mean-if it sounds good it sounds good. It’s not hard to imagine a mix engineer doing something like that. For live sound I doubt you’ll really need to compress twice (and this is before whatever FOH has going on)...try it and report!
What is the pop song he plays with the fet compressor?
where you using the Inverse setting?
😎👌
Nice cat bass in the background
I read somewhere that the noise floor is very loud on this pedal with a passive bass. Did you find that to be an issue?
I didn’t notice anything during the filming
Polarity-flipping, neural-interfacing, psychic-controls are tight!
Pls, when you comment a pedal/amp/speakers, use the same bass and play the same riff. So we can really hear the differance. Its a bit of a guess now, is it the bass? The style? Or your urge to showing off your bass skills. Greetz from Holland.
Quick question - when you run a pedal (say an X7) with this do you prefer the H.L. before or after the X7?
I also am wondering this. I have an x ultra, which i use in red mode, into a vintage microtubes, into an Alpha Omega. I just orderd the HL and plan to put it at the end of this chain....am i crazy for this? My highs are already compressed, but then i slam the signal through other pedals (not always on but sometimes i do have all pedals on). I intend to make corrections at the end of the path. Please someone let me know if I'm insane for this.
How would this sound/work with DG Vintage Ultra v2 and a DG B7k? (signal chain wise.)
Personally I usually put compression at the end of the chain. it would sound great with either or both.
@@AmosHeller Really appreciate the response my dude, that's why you are awesome.
What’s your handle on TB?
I don’t have one! Should get one, huh.
@@AmosHeller
lol. Just thought maybe you were a member.
Great video with helpful information here.
I just received my used DG HL today. Watched a bunch of videos and yours was best.
Thanks
Awesome. So glad it helped!
what is the song you're playing to in the intro? thanks.
This was an original creation for this video. The vocals I got from Splice
Always confusing when you turn a threshold down by turning the knob clockwise. I understand that pedal makers want to make easy-to-use compressors but they make them more confusing when up is down.
Just take my money
Dude, Wis isn't a dump stat. Think of the Illithid!
Ha! No doubt. My saves against most spells and effects would be terrible. I was trying to give my actual stats, not my Tiefling sorcerer.
That WIS score is gonna be your downfall for sure.
It already is
