Hi folks.
The mighty Photon is the apex (for now) of the Alpha Omega approach to bass tone (and a personal favorite of the Darkglass stable). It takes the benchmark flexibility of the layered drives (the distorted Alpha and the fuzzy Omega), and adds programmable compression, EQ, drive, cabinet simulation, XLR out, DAW compatibility, headphone amp connections (pauses for breath) and that's all before you hook it up to your computer or phone to get under the hood of the studio-ready signal chain.
Also you can save three presets for easy switching.
Also it has a tuner.
Also it made me a flawless French omelette this morning.
We put the Navy Knockout to the test, and answer the question most DG fans will have the second they see the touch sensitive sliders and bright lights: Is the Photon better than the A.D.A.M.?
(spoilers: I think so)
**If you have been sufficiently swayed by this video and decide to purchase this fantastic item, please do me a solid and go here:
www.thomannmusic.com/darkglas...
It won't cost you anything extra, but it will help me keep making these exhaustively researched, painstakingly edited and creatively...created videos.
Basses:
Yamaha Custom Shop BB
Yamaha BB 2025x
Rickenbacker 4003
Was waiting for your version of this, not because of the item itself, I was waiting for your playing on it.
Anyway you have been extremely useful, I don' t have a photon in my hands but still I know what it can do, thanks
Dude, I commented on Instagram that your intro clip had a very Justin Chancellor vibe... Finally had a minute to watch the full video with headphones and I LOVE that the song title is Just Chance!
You caught it!
Love the intro jam. Sounds like Justin Chancellor sitting in with Porcupine Tree
Shoot. Thanks!
I'm two years late to the table and have been watching a ton of reviews and tutorials on this pedal. This is by far the best one.
I love that 5 string Yamaha. We really need a studio tour video. Thanks for listening.
This was so thorough and explained really well. Thank you
Love your videos, man! ❤️
Great review! The pedal sounds phenomenal, a complete rig in a box!
Your video sold me I just ordered one today!
This might be the best pedal review I've ever seen. Love the format. Thank you!
Great demo, really lets you understand everything that can be accomplished with it.
As a bass player, I love your profiles of gear. It’s more than a promo or an overview. I actually learn from your clips and that is awesome!
Yes! Was waiting for this one!
Amos lots of love man for your content. Even your tracks/songs/riffs in the videos or the demos are super nice.
Such a good review/tutorial, loved it. Definitely sold me on purchasing one, thanks!
Darkglass should be paying you for doing their job. This tutorial is very complete and if I buy this, i am sure i'll get back to this video many times! Thank you.
Wow! Amazing demo! Your playing and the product are both incredible, thank you!
Love your channel, thanks for the 'in the weeds' review, and the humor is an added bonus. Subscribed!
One of the best gear demos i've ever seen. Great job!
Thanks!!
I'm so glad you created "Just Chance" sounds. I did exactly that with my ADAM many months ago and it sounds fantastic, especially in a band context. Keep up the good work with your fantastic videos, I've been a fan from the very beginning!
The video every review needs to be like. Thanks!
Excellent review, well done! I must confess I have watched it at least 20-30 times so far because I enjoy the tracks and sounds you created with it. It definitely helped me make up my mind on whether I should get one or not.
Excellent video once again. These are pure joy to watch and I really appreciate the effort you have put into these instead of some others. Real professionality here. Oh, and yes, DG is also very good. Even though I go back an forward with the DG sound, this could be THE one for me.
Outstanding job Amos !!! Clear, efficiently explained, committed.
Great tracks !!! I'm about to sell my AO to get the Photon.
Stumbled upon your videos just yesterday and they are really, really great!
Watched a lot of gear demo videos but this is next level.
- Great sound
- Great video
- Great products
- Great looking basses
- super informative and relevant walk through of the gear demoed.
- And also, a knowledgable and funny guy running the show😎
A most welcome addition to all the other gear demo channels 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Amos your reviews are the best, you describe everything so well, I’ve watched 3 different channels “ wont name them” lol and had to go to yours because I knew I would leave with the knowledge I was missing, and your basslines are killer!!
Such a good review! Your playing is next level for sure! I think in the intro you hit every Tool bass tone ever. This is not a bad thing at all. Great video and please post more often when possible. Do more covers and such.
The intro did remind me of Tool a lot
@@trfmusic902 the title isn't Just(in) Chance(llor) for nothing
Loved the subtle Tommy Boy reference 😂😂😂
Awesome channel mate ! … very inspirational playing …. Cheers from down-under 💪
Your playing is inspiration as always, but man, the production quality on these videos is inspiring as well!
Thank you!
I've been waiting for this...first time hearing the Photon...let's GOOOOOOO!
im a big fan of you mixing your tone live on camera its an awesome way to do a vid
I need an entire song with your intro. Amazing video.
Oh God! Finally a pretty detailed review and demo of this insane machine! Your tone is incredible Amos, as your playing. Subscribed immediately to the channel, big ups from Italy!
Awesome! Grazie!
Bravo. Great overview of the pedal.
Awesome review
Come for the review, stay for the amazing playing.
That custom shop is badass! Thanks for the demo. I'll probably stick with my HX Stomp but if I get a gig with a heavier band, this would be amazing!
Finally the mystery behind the StudioRig-Setting is revealed. Great demo overall!
Dude I'm just 3 minutes in and had 3 good laughs. Your humor kills me!
But jokes aside, this is like the most complete, in depth analysis, background info thinggy about the Darkglass Φhoton I've watched so far and I've watched a LOT of'em.
The editing, the facts, especially the background infos to the 3 "potti" kinda knobs...like this is exactly what I wanted to know about this pedal, not just:
"Here look! This is a pedal! Now I'm switching randomly around the presetes and knobs and play bass... this is what it sounds like."
Great job man! Thank you!
It's a crime how few subscribers you have. Great videos, happy to add a sub your way
Thanks Amos. I'm new to Darkglass and your videos are extremely informative and funny. If you make me laugh (and you do) I actually learn things accidentally haha. I started following you because of these videos. Thanks so much. I got the Microtubes Infinity first and then a Photon. Amazing tech and thanks to your Photon tutorial I can apply what you taught me to the Microtubes Infinity pedal. You sir, are a Godsend. Keep up the great work brother.
PS I've already re-watched this at least 5 times haha. Do one on the Microtubes Infinity.
Dude I was just looking at your UA-cam page a few hours ago thinking "where's the next vid at?!" and boom, its right here!
I didn’t want to let you down!
Best product review ever.
That Yamaha with the Tool-esque intro song is siiiick!
Hi Amos! This was a fantastic review! Your videos are all so well done. I'm really enjoying the content. I'm hoping DG will make a Vintage/B7K combination in this new format. I think it would be fantastic! I hope you're doing well and keep up the great work!- Brent, VT USA
looks like they are, getting one of these and one of the infinity as well
@@coveryourears3851 Really? That's awesome!
@@brentheathersimons7042 yes, go check out the infinity demos. I’ll be right behind ya as I haven’t watched them myself :)
And of course looking forward to the Amos demo of that as well!
That's an awesome video, especially the Just Chance reference :) I said to myself that I don't need anymore gear but this looks tempting... One suggestion tho, could you include some tracks with big heavy guitars in future demos? One of the big advantages of DG preamps is the way it allows the bass to be audible within a wall of guitar distortion so I'd happily hear those in the reviews as well :)
Guitars are hard! But that’s a great suggestion and I’ll work on it.
I love what Darkglass and have owned many of their products, but Reviewers/Demoers seem afraid to criticise them.
I loved the tones you got out of this no doubt it’s impressive, can’t say it’s too far from the Alpha Omega Ultra though.
For the price of this and the not ADAM, they should be a multi voiced drive not specific to one Darkglass pedal, perhaps downloadable/purchasable in the suite.
Also the glaring omission of an effects loop seems to be missed in every review.
Great video though
Slawa Ukraine
This guy's demos are so good, the presentation, tones, styles, etc are great.
Thanks Tyler!
Best anything demo's anywhere, I'm just glad you do bass gear, not haircare products.
What IEM's are you rocking? Love the Big Rick Energy about halfway through.
Thanks m8te this is super helpful
studio rig looks like the truth on this! love the base A/O so that plus the presets seem awesome to me.
Agreed. Studio rig all the time!
I like the way you named " Just Chance" for justin Chancellor :D
Good catch
I had a second tab open looking at rickenbackers when i started the vid, and i was like "man this sounds like Justin Chancellor from Tool" seen the Wal bass, read the section Just Chance, it put a smile on my face. Now its time to buy one and get that sick tone!
Thanks for going to all that effort. You should be on the DG payroll by now... ;-)
Aye ! lovely
Dude ! What a demo ! Awesome work.
Great job Amos...now I gotta sell all my other DG pedals and get this one lol
Rotory girder had me for a bit there 🤣
Badass sound.........
Excellent detailed video, SIMPLY AWESOME!!!! Yamaha has a custom shop?
They do indeed :)
🔥🔥🔥
Gracias
Amos a great review. But you have made it almost impossible to choose between the AO Proton and the ADAM because both sound so great. Thank you very much!!!🤨 Just joking😂😂😂
Nordstrand Big Blademan? If so, it's the first video (Nordstrand demo included) where those pickups sound like who they are made for and what they are modelled after. Great job
Ah shoot! Thanks man!
amazing video mate
well done
can it be used as a D.I. with clean and flat signal?
can it send the aux signal to the headphones without sending it to the outputs?
I have the thing and it is really great! However, there is something, which nobody mentions in their reviews - the actual version of the Darkglass suite doesn't support this effect yet! So forget about setting up new cabsim from the enormous library for now. I hope they are this support soon!
can you make a video about the first bass in the video? it looks amazing
Is the first bass you play a custom Yamaha BB? Awesome video again. You always make darkglass sound better than anyone else I find!
Yup! Custom BB indeed. And thanks!!
@@AmosHeller wow she look awesome!
It looks reaaaaaaally good.
@@AmosHeller Can we get a video about that bass!!
Nice . I have the alpha Omega 900 amp.... So ... Could we get a b7k in this format? I just wanna carry a bass pedal and my bass to a gig lol
Nice Video !!! How do you get that punch in the first secondes (it's because of the pedal or more about just fresh strings....need to change). And how do you describe the drive in this compare to the Adam ? (for me the Adam is like lifeless, so compressed, flat as fuck, and no grind or growly like the AO)
Great review !!!
Can we have the notes of the "just chance" ?
What a good review! What is the intro song?
I love my Alpha Omega pedal and have been curious about this pedal but man, I feel like I would need to go back to school and get a PhD in engineering to understand how to properly use this pedal.
love to know what pick type gauge etc you are using
Could you tell me the specs of the bass you use at the intro section? It seems a yamaha BB with nordstrand pickups, I'm curious about wood and electronics. It has the justin chancellor tone i love. are the pickups in series or parallel? Thank you.
It's nordstrand's JC preamp! NS pups too
I’ve only heard that compressor 1175 times ☹️
nice demo and and review as always. what year is your rick? is that a 2014ish ruby red? what's your thoughts about that bass? drooling for a long time...
Hi, Amos. Thanks for one more cool review. apart from a wide range of functionality... do you hear the difference between this digital and usual analogue A-O?
I didn’t test it! That would be interesting though.
Been using the alpha omega since launch and have been wanting midi control for it, may swap to this for that but analog vs digital makes me unsure still
What's that awesome bass, that appeared first on the vid?
The dots around ALL the knobs reflect the slider you are currently adjusting. #MoarPhotonPhacts
the only thing it lacks is an effects loop to put some modulation before the cab sim. Otherwise, it's a jack of all trades!
I already have the alpha omega ultra. Would this be a worthy upgrade? I need to switch between dirty and clean signals during a song? Will this alpha omega photon be great at that?
After this review... I am trying to figure out how to make this pedal work in my country band. haha
Amos are those Big Blademan 4s? I've got a set in my Warmoth :D
5 knobs - are we brothers in JC-3bs?
I believe we might be!
Will you make a vid with Microtubes inf? :)
Hi Amos! Do you know what's the difference between the regular Darkglass Suite and the Legacy Version? Is it only a different way menus are put on the screen?
If I want to put a delay or delay.... Where could I insert these kind of pedals? After Cab Sim?
One of the few drawbacks of this construction is that it does not have an effects loop, so you are going either before or after. Period. If it’s a delay, I would probably go after.
AOP is an all in one solution.
Okay this pedal is badass but I want that first bass so badly…
Please make a video on Microtubes Infinity.
Amos, your Yamaha reminds me a little of a Wal. Have you played Wals before?
I have not, sadly. I was looking to craft something along those lines with this one.
hello anus, thank you for the great video
Will you be demoing the infinity?
So everyone watching that’s actually a consumer. I have the micro tubes infinity, should I have gotten this one instead? Because this seems to sound a lot better
That custom Yammy is killer! Are those Nostrands in there?
They most certainly are
@@AmosHeller the more time passes, the more convinced I am that I need a custom bass.
Also, just a great demo in general. Love your approach to gear demos. I think your demos of DG gear give the best impression of what they're truly capable of beyond just djent. Kudos.
Thanks so much!
What strings do you use and how often do you change them?
I use D’Addario NYXL and change relatively frequently. I like the new zippy sound so if a bass has a set that’s going dead I swap ‘em. I have a few with flats that I never change. :)
PS What kind strings are you using? Thanks! Brent
D'Addario NYXL's 🤘
Hey Amos! Is that a Yamaha Custom Shop in natural finish with Nordstrands?
Wow. So much for being mysterious. It is indeed a Yamaha custom shop with Nordstrand pick ups and guts: specifically two big man pick ups and a JC preamp
@@AmosHeller some keen eyes on that Internet! It’s a fine looking and sounding bass! What’s the JC preamp?
It’s the circuit Nordstrand did for Justin Chancellor
@@AmosHeller ahh yes of course! D’oh!!! You wear it well Sir!
How would you compare this to the ADAM pedal? they're both a similar price and form factor.
edit: apologies if you answered this in the video
All good!
Short answer: I like it more. I think the drive selection and control is better. I love the AO stuff, and the drive was a weak spot on the ADAM.
@@AmosHeller What exactly do you mean by week spot? I owned AOU in the past, then switched to ADAM and the sounds I can get now are (almost) limitless.
