It takes someone who's tried all the gear to inform us on how little one really needs and what a great time we are in to make something. And it doesn't take a Michael Bay drone move, to make an informative video still look dope as hell in a hotel room. Thank you for your thoughts and work!

Good explanation of depth of field. It's not always talked about when comparing full frame and APS-C. Something I didn't realize when I jumped from Super 35mm to Full Frame and shooting at f1.4 and f1.2. It is definitely noticeable depth of field. But for those who are invested in lots of APS-C glass, the FX-30 is a great option. I finally stopped shooting crop sensors this year and I'm enjoying the look and feel of full frame for both video and photos.

I'd be happy to trade half of those megapixels for better rolling shutter, better lowlight, less 4k120p crop, and possibly a mechanical shutter. But regardless for video, it is still way better than any current Sony apsc offerings. For hybrid work, I'd still go with A7IV as my first camera.

Just came across your page today. Love the flow and also love your perspective. I shoot with A7IV as only camera. Turning more towards video though I still do photos. I am needing a second camera as for more jobs are requesting it and I was glad I had waited. I could obviously use another full frame like FX3 which I had eye on. But I am so used to shooting in 4k60 crop that it does not bother me at all buying an APC.
I really agree with you on even professionals can use this in their bag…it is far from an entry level videographer if they don’t know anything about settings and frame rates their footage will still look like crap.
I also use my Sigma 14-24 2.8 a lot ! With the specs you listed, this lens does wonders for me in cropped mode for A7Iv. I bought for real estate purposes and now have used it a lot in my reels for gyms, and even weddings I’ve shot a whole wedding with it before in cropped mode 4k60 as they were on a 4 hour lower budget I stuck with this lens and my drone and I got perfect results for focal length and lower light.
So we’ll done on this review, I pre ordered mine and looking forward to adding it as my BCam !

For those like me who are APSC Sony shooters for video, we all dreamed of having 4k 60 and 4k 120. It took a long time but we finally got it and it has a fan so it doesn't overheat. 🔥
With regards to depth of field, the sigma trio 1.4's and all the aspc offers enough depth of field to get a cinematic look, they are amazingly sharp, light and portable. Is there a difference, yes but it's so marginal that I doesn't really matter in the real world.

The dof is faster to explain that the only things that affect it is distance focal length and fstop. Sensor size doesn't change depth of field. Reducing the focal length or stepping back to make an "equivalent shot" is what makes the dof change

(But, then again, they put a full-size HDMI port in it, and my full-frame Panasonic S5 only has one of them micro HDMI ports, so there is that.) Also I would need at least auto-exposure bracketing in stills, and it SEEMS like that isn't available (none of the reviews mentioned whether autoe-exposure bracketing is available or not). You make a valid point, but I doubt in the real world this would be better than the A7IV. Also, cropping into apsc even more? at a certain point you are using FF glass but getting MFT results. You will be wishing you had a mft camera with a faster mft lens to make up for the noise you are introducing at the point imo. I'm a Sony Fanboy, but got to disagree with you on the fx30 being an amazing camera.
Sure, it's a solid piece of technology and has a couple of nice features.
But as soon as you face some suboptimal conditions when filming like low light, you'll hit the limitations very fast.
And then, you'll start going for workarounds with some average results. But hey, for beginners, it sure is a decent option.

    • @nVuFilms

Most cinema cameras actually don't handle low light well... At all. RED for example. That is why you LIGHT the scene. Also... Most "NIGHT" scenes are filmed during the day and graded to look like night time.
