I think Jared Padalecki/Sam Winchester as an old man on the finale of Supernatural really takes the cake on that one. You can’t tell that isn’t a Party City wig.
A miniseries could've covered this so well. Like it hits too many topics to be a single movie. Maybe like a trilogy could've but this is too much for cinema audiences imho.
Mofuckas need to make miniseries/high budget tv more acceptable for source material that's suited to it. The more I think about Queens Gambit as a 2 hour film the more I want to throw up
@@ericstorm6582 It would. When you cram too much stuff in a feature length film it fucks up with the pacing and at worst makes the whole thing hard to follow. With a miniseries of 6-8 episodes they can flesh out plot points without dragging it out
The movie takes place when they are 17/18 and goes from there so I think they got actors that look that age to show just how messed up our society and military are. Our government allows for kids who are seniors in high school to make a decision that will destroy their lives forever.
It says a lot about Amanda's personality that I will gladly watch any video of hers, regardless of whether or not I'm planning on watching a piece of media
@@WinterFogFilms true! she has some awesome arguments and says in a amazing way that, even though I don't fully agree, it's worth watching the whole video
I love Amanda especially for her reviews of horror films (not what's reviewed here, obv) because I love stories and elements of horror, but I'm also weak-hearted and can't really stand the actual anxiety I get from them. I watch all of Amanda's videos, and I especially love her reviews for media I never plan to watch
I graduated high school in 2001 and I had SO many friends do the "hey, let’s get married before you’re deployed so I can use your insurance" thing. Honestly, it’s so hard getting on your feet when you’re poor and don’t have health insurance, that I don’t blame any of them. And I’ve also known so, so, SO many people that were taken advantage of and lied to by military recruiters. They really will say anything and take advantage of anything going on in your life to get you to sign up. Many of my friends and classmates were absolutely promised that they would remain stateside and not be deployed. Instead, once they were in the Army or Navy they were deployed to combat zones multiple times. Almost all of them came back with PTSD (especially the folks that joined the Army), and most of them developed substance abuse issues because the VA couldn’t/wouldn’t help them. It’s maddening and infuriating.
My next door neighbor for most of my life was an Iraq War veteran. The amount of shenanigans and bullcrap the U.S Army put them through was downright absimal. Not only after his service but during their service. They way we treat our veterans is a national shame, but at this point there are so many things to be ashamed about America, it's very depressing
My mom served just under 30 years in the army and navy. The army is fucked. The predation doesn't stop after boot camp and the entire power structure, almost all the way up, seems to be about who can be the bigger bully. Now she's a social worker at the VA and most of her patients from the army are people who had preexisting problems that got exploited. It's rotted all the way through
I remember a recruiter came to my high school and when I said I had no plans to do it because of my health condition they gave me shit for it my brother who has the same condition tried to enlist and didn’t get in because they couldn’t guarantee he would able to get his medication. I had tried to tell him before hand but he thought that he was stronger and it wouldn’t effect him...wish I could have showed that recruiter the paperwork he got ... I heard that he was so rude to the students that parents called to complain about him if they do that to kids can’t imagine what they put adults through,
@@minwellitsanicknamebegrate2531 I believe it. I know they always went after the guys in high school harder than us girls. For me, they asked if I’d be joining and I said I have asthma so I can’t. They’d try to say "well, you might be able to..." and I’d just say "well, the only thing I’d want to do is fly, but I can’t see a thing without my glasses, so I doubt the Air Force is going to accept that" and they’d just laugh and go on to the next person. The guys though, yikes. I had friends that said they couldn’t join because of asthma, epilepsy, type 1 diabetes or other diseases/disabilities and the recruiters would scoff at them, insult them, call them pussies, accuse them of lying just because they’re "too chicken shit" to join up "like a real man". Some of them would get in their faces and scream at them. These were men yelling at teenage boys. And it didn’t just happen in high school, we had recruiters come to our middle school every year to get us hyped about joining the Navy or Air Force when we turned 18. They’d even tell us “you don’t even need to graduate high school! If you turn 18 before then, you can drop out, get your GED, and join the service! As if it was a good option. Hook ‘em while they’re young. But for so many of my friends and family, the military was their only hope of attending college or a trade school. They had to risk their lives and their mental health just to have the chance to get a job that pays slightly better than minimum wage in the future. It’s a shitty system. It feeds off people that are desperate.
That doctor scene was too real, man. I too was overprescribed a drug that I was intolerant of by a careless psychiatrist. I wanted help with my own PTSD, but was instead put into a stupor and experienced drug-induced psychosis for about 5 years. I'm still recovering. It upsets me so much that so many people are treated in this exact same manner. Even when you take that step to look for help, the system does so much to deny it. It's even worse for marginalized people.
Both my brothers served in the military. Neither one of them should have done so. One of them now has severe PTSD and struggles with addiction. Even though this movie isn't great, I hope it gives people more compassion for service members like my brothers.
Y e a h. My mom is a vet, and now she works for the VA. Part of the recruiting strategy is literally to prey on people's vulnerabilities. Most of her patients are people who had preexisting issues that should have been dealt with but we ignored and then perpetuated by service. People inside and outside of the military look at former service members who are struggling, with addiction or mental health or anything messy, as failures or fuck ups or deranged, instead of people who were actively traumatized and abandoned
@@autumn7809 That 100% describes both my brothers. Both suffered from mental health and addiction issues before entering the military. Watching people die, trying not to die themselves, trauma, and the worst thing prevalent in the military happening to one of them did not help their situations. Not to mention, the physical injuries one now has in addition to mental health issues. The VA was so overbooked and understaffed that they received little to no help. They both served for over a decade. The way our country has treated them and others like them will break my heart and infuriate me until the day I die.
@@NickStrothers Yes, I saw it. I didn't think it was bad, but I didn't think it was great. I'm glad if people enjoy it though. If the movie is your jam, that's great. It just made me think about the suffering of my brothers a lot, so it was hard for me to enjoy.
@@mathildewilliams8195 The fact that we can CG an entire universe and detailed monster but can't come around to cg people looking sicker/muscular is seriously so upsetting. All for method acting but the stories I hear about actors starving themself to be more defined/thinner looking are so cruel

@@msrustyspatula8679 in the first avenger, they had a different actor do all of the scenes and then deepfaked chris evans onto him, and considering tom is so skinny during basically the entire movie, it would be way too time consuming and not really worth the money
My friend is currently in the military and he hates how he was essentially tricked into it due to his disability (autism and low income). There is so much disgusting stuff he tells to me that happens and I pity him.
The Russo Brothers are apparently doing a film with Chris Evans and after their post-Marvel track record I'm very hesitant. They also need to stop using Marvel actors for their projects, it just feels cheap.
Ryan Gosling is supposed to be the main character of this movie and honestly, both of these people look way too similar for me to seriously consider them rivals. Which is disappointing since it's supposed to be a spy movie sort of thing that goes across multiple movies. It's not even the fact that both of them are white, it's just that they look too similar. So yeah, I would have dropped Chris Evans, and dare I say it maybe Ryan Gosling too. There were way better casting choices for this
@@aysenursahin9953 Eh, depends on what you're referring to, in terms of action and tone it's definitely Winter Soldier, pacing and themes Civil War is where they peaked, and Infinity War is best at juggling story parts and characters and presents the story in the most unique way by having Thanos be the main character and have the downer ending, Endgame has the best character-building.
"Have you ever been joined the military after getting dumped on bad?" So, when I was at university, I had some pretty bad neurological issues. I'd periodically go limp, be utterly unable to control my body, but my nerves would sporadically fire off, causing my arms and legs to twitch. Occasionally, I'd stop breathing. Everyone thought i was going to die before I turned 21 (that part of this story ends well: I'm now 34, totally cured, and as of 2020, 100% off all anti-seizure medication). Enter Shaina. Shaina is a girl who I thought had a crush on me. She sent me pretty unambiguous hints. (like saying "Someday, I'm going to marry you." Look, I was young and stupid) One day, I ask her out to a play. She says "Yes, but only if we do a group thing with my roommate. Oh, can you find her a date? Maybe your friend Carlos from your frat?" Oh, sure. I guess group dates are a thing. I ask Carlos, he agrees, because he knows her roommate and figures we'll all have a good time. I buy our tickets. Day before the Big Date, she texts me "My brother is going to be in town that day! I never get to see him. Can he come on the date, too? Also, he's in high school, so can you buy his ticket? And his date's ticket?" Apparently, his date is another girl from her sorority that she roped into this. I was getting a bit peeved. A smarter man would have just called it off. Carlos even suggests I call it off. I don't, and the date goes forward. We go out for gelato beforehand. All six of us. I wind up buying ice cream for four, because remember: her brother is broke (and by the end of the night, so am I). We get to the theater, and I hand her brother and his dates their tickets. Obviously they couldn't sit with us, because they were a last-minute purchase, and I bought the other four tickets at the same time. Shaina - God bless her - says "Oh, if that's the case, I'll sit with my brother so he doesn't feel lonely." So, I wind up with his date - whose name I don't even remember. Carlos, his date, and my "new" date all give me this look of deep, deep pity. I find out years later that this was all a wildly circuitous plan where Shaina had leveraged MY disease as a chance to show Carlos how great she was, by going out with the sick kid, so that he'd actually be interested in HER. So yes. I have been dumped so bad, I tried to go to the military.
@@justastudent1423 He absolutely did tell her that. He remains a good bro to this day. And don't worry, Jose; I'm doing much better now. Thanks for asking.
you got to love that part where she wants to present herself as being virtuous by Kitty dating the sick kid... But doesn't use a single dime from her own money, help she makes the sick kid pay for everything! But I guess that's par for the course for those types they want to have their cake and eat it too and you're always wondering if they're the ones who are sick in the mind or they're just that narcissistic when they don't see what they did as wrong in any fashion. I hope you're doing well just hearing about chicks like that reminds me of the chick who screwed my brother over recently, I have never ever laughed at someone who had cancer relapsing when look like it was gone then I did for her after what she did to my brother. In the middle of it relapsing after he helped her go through all that s*** she put them in massive d e b t, humiliated him put them into a deep dark hole of depression that he almost drank himself to death and still has a problem with drinking and just made him f****** annoying to deal with for the rest of the family before a good Wild after everything he did for her she cheated on his ass and then robbed them when he caught her with the guy he didn't catch them in bed but he caught them as they were finishing up and about to leave and got suspicious but he was too slow in acting first they had a joint bank account so is she took all the money and fled to our parents who didn't like him because well he was black she was Puerto Rican and their the typical old class we want our daughter dating her own kind! Me and my brother are always at each other's throats but I care for my little brother and someone like that the f****** him over well let's just say she tipped her hat prior before. In the past me and her were doing a job when she was first dating my little brother and is she had to do some extra stuff so she asked me to take on her shift she would give me the money at a later date. Every time I ask once it got to that later date she kept making excuses after excuses before finally calling me a harasser I only asked her if she had the money once per month once the. She was supposed to pay me back past! Before she lied to my brother and told him I was harassing her and he got aggressive towards me. At that point I realized she was a fake and well I didn't start any trouble I let it go but the moment he talked to me about her possibly cheating that moment I mention that's when I told him he needs to get out but he was too slow because he kept making excuses for her until it was too late! I was happy to know her cancer came back after he helped her go through all that s*** just for her to cheat on him and treat him like that. I viewed it as karma biting her in the ass she's okay and it went away again but damn did it take its toll on her appearance and health! I don't wish death because I view that as the ultimate Karma Houdini! It's even more hilarious because even her family who are quick to help her with my little brother quickly kicked her to the curb and pretend she doesn't exist the money she stole from my brother she used as an additional bribed to them so when that ran out well it did not go well for her! I just dislike those type of people seriously the thing that makes me hate the most is when they have the nerve to act like they did nothing wrong anyone could look at the choices they made and see that was f***** up and wrong but I guess that's what it means to be an unrepentant narcissist I suppose
Reading the basic idea for Cherry, they tried ticking so many boxes for Oscar bait, except they aren't good enough film-makers to actually make it work.
As someone who was in the army from 2002-2005 trying to make a mini-series or movie about that part of your life would be very difficult. All that stuff the army puts you through and when your enlistment is over your basically just like "I didn't die, I made some friends and I'm 21 years old now. Life can go a million different ways from this point"
I thought it was so interesting that James Lightfoot, who was so adamantly against his friends joining the military because they'd come back messed up like his brother, himself gets hurt on his civilian job and ends up in the same situation as Cherry and Emily. That felt like an indictment of the medical industry that over-medicates rather than tries to help patients and was easily the thing that struck me the hardest. I also thought it was interesting that most of what Cherry saw in his nightmares were people bleeding from bullet wounds rather than his friends that blew up in the humvee, because it suggests he saw way more horrors than we the audience saw during his time in the military. I think the movie is better than a lot of people are suggesting, but then again I've always been a rather easy-to-please moviegoer. Thanks for another great video, Amanda!
As an Arab, watching movies like these is both fascinating and disturbing. We are constantly led to sympathize with a person who literally volunteered to aid in the war that took a million lives, created 4 million refugees and left Fallujah more radioactive than Hiroshima, for *absolutely no reason*. He felt like it. He broke up and didn't know what to do. That's it. That's why the "cherries" of the America came and murdered all those people. They're the reason my friend lost his home, why half his neighbourhood died violently, why his mother got cancer from exposure to the remnants of chemical weapons. All these movies do is leave me with a sense of outrage and emptiness, but not for the reasons the film makers want. The ridiculousness, the sheer absurdity of it, the horror of realizing that's why these people come here..it's mind numbing. and at the end of the day what do you get? Yet an other "killing your people made our soldiers sad" tale. Soldiers suffering PTSD is perhaps the only semblance of karmic justice Iraq or Afghanistan or whichever region in Africa gets drone striked will ever get. True justice will never be served. And once again, "killing your people made our soldiers sad" is the only story hollywood dares to make.
It’s not karmic justice at all… If Bush and Cheney, and every American politician who voted for the war somehow got PTSD from it, that would be karmic justice. Punishing the people who were fed propaganda and exploited and sent to kill and die isn’t justice, unless they’re the specific people who committed war crimes themselves. The politicians who ordered and voted for the war should be in prison after an international tribunal, that would be justice.
I think that Trainspotting already did one of the best depicitions of heroin addiction, and it's rare that films hit anywhere close to its mastery. So like, this would have been so much better if it HAD focused on the American military, because that's a completely unique angle, and also a story that genuinely really needs to be told...
At this point I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed this movie. Maybe because I've never seen Russo's previous works and I didn't have any bias while diving into the movie, or maybe because I've seen much much worse films, but I genuinely enjoyed it. It's sad to see how criticised it is knowing how proud Russos and Tom are of this movie (not to say people don't have the right to dislike it, they totally do). At least everyone agrees that Tom's and Ciara's acting were really good.
I don’t hate it like a lot of people and there’s parts I liked but there just wasn’t enough time to tell this story the way they wanted to and it’s somehow also still so long.
@@jackbrian7083 not always, there are actors who know they're in crappy movies and do bare minimum while promoting it or don't promote it at all, directors who wish they did their movie better, etc. I watched so many interviews with Tom and Russo brothers and they did so much research, they had nurses and former drug-addict consultant on set to make the drug addiction as believable as possible, Tom interviews actual veterans with ptsd to learn about the issue, etc. so they were really passionate about it and worked hard. That's what I meant when I said they were proud of it movie.
@@AmandaTheJedi oh absolutely. I said what I said because currently I've had an avalanche of negative reviews on all over my social media and it almost felt like a slap on the face. I know some are just biased because they don't like Russo's or Tom, but I was genuinely surprised people would even call this movie awful. Like it's not perfect, but it's not this bad?
This does remind me of a tiktok I saw of this dude asking soldiers what they would say to their recruiter, and most of them said something along the lines of "fuck you"
I’ve known people who have gone through this exact experience. Military service to drugs to robbing banks. I think this is a very real and important view to talk about.

Yeah came close to ending up in the army due to trying to get out of an abusive household at the time (luckily a few months after I got out of my situation). And yeah I was in the whole process of doing all annoying paperwork and testing. So happy I ended up deciding to not continue with it further once one minor thing required more paperwork
Addicts usually stick together as a former addict I think it’s more realistic. I never saw couples with only one being the user, it’s almost impossible as it’s extremely difficult to hide and so the saying is true ‘birds of feather flock together’ For me this seemed to portray addicts pretty accurately usually one has to move away completely disappear, die of overdose, go to jail and even then they reunite just like the movie. I didn’t read the book but going by the short description of the movie it seemed believe able it certainly took me back to my using days! Great review though now I’ll have to go and watch. I REALLY hope the next Spider-Man is actually a great movie. Despite Watts being the director again(unfortunately and so undeserved) , maybe they can flesh out Tom’s talents a bit better
@Jam Drew I mean, Homecoming is easily my second favorite spiderman movie and I legit think it’s very good. But the director clearly doesn’t have a hook on the character as much as he should. He made spider-man a bit waaaay too “teenage girls idol”. You know? Like, ofc Tom Holland is a charismatic good looking dude, but this way of directing has made him look so shallow and a One Trick Pony. So much so that every movie post Marvel of his has been the complete opposite. He is clearly self aware on how much his image as an actor was molded by the Marvel flicks. Not to mention, when we have actors such a Taika Waititi, the Russo Brothers ,James Gunn and John Favreau , all that have a very interesting take on characters and cinematography, Jon Watts just feels so underwhelming. We’re just not on that mediocre phase of Marvel( maybe phase 2). The latest movies have mostly been flood with energy and some creative takes and then there is Watts doing the most generic shit possible
@Jam Drew also, while I loved FFH when I first watched it, I came to realize that I only did so because it was a fun classic marvel movie after the more “serious” endgame and Infinity war. Upon second and third viewing, I really believe FFH is so mediocre. Legit one of the dumbest ideas for a Spider-man possible. It’s a cute movie but overall it’s kinda “meh” and completely non connected with the character (unlike Homecoming). ALSO, Idk WHY but Watts thought it was a good idea to literally do the exact same arc that was already done in Civil War-Homecoming. If you take your time you realize every character event in peter is so irrelevant and unnecessary. Even the Spider sense feels dumb besides the literal last action scene
Give him a break, he's only 24 and he's been in many movies already (16 or 17 if I remember correctly, all of them had positive reviews). Two bad movies aren't such a bad score and some sort of prediction of ''wrong direction''. Besides, just like Christopher Lee once said, every actor makes terrible movies from time to time, the key is to not be bad at them'' and Tom's acting is always good.
There's apparently a movie that's a short film of Alice Cullen's life? I've only just found out about it even though it's from like 2015, you should cover it as part as your lil twilight series (not like you need an excuse to talk about Alice 😁)🖤
It’s on my list! I’m doing Eclipse this month then covering some of the side projects and a really weird fan fiction :) still trying to decide if I want to do the Alice stuff separate or combine it with the Bree Tanner book

I read the book in preparation for this movie to come out and I think Amanda summed it up well "it felt too long and also not long enough". It a first person story that manages to have very little emotion in it so you don't get attached to any of the characters. I was hoping the movie would fix this but I don't think it did.
the most weird thing is.... As much as things go on and all... it's so boring.i could barely make it to the end and by the end.... i didn't CARE about any character at all.
After watching the trailer, I already have a feeling that it wasn't going to be good. When it came, I was forced to watch it with my friends (it was only because Tom holland was in it.) And I stand corrected.
Aside from the Russo brothers, Tom Holland seems to not have that many good material outside of Spider-Man/the MCU. Did y’all see Chaos Walking that came out just recently? He’s also gonna be Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted film which is deemed to be bad like every other bad film adaptation of a video game. I really hope he has good roles in the future.
@@LoraK31 yeah, i like onward, but i cannot take chris pratt's voice seriously, and its not really that creative with the premise. Plus, its a touch confused and all over the place. Its overall underwhelming

yeah I honestly liked him in the role. I was initially scared because he looks young. But I just came in with the mindset that he is adult and he can’t play teenagers forever.
I'm a medic in the Army so I was exited about the military aspect but.... eh more accurate than most, wasn't great but wasn't bad, the book is so much better to understand what the military is like

@Jam Drew True but I think End of the F***ing world was a bit cheaper to produce. But yeah I am bummed that a lot of shows on Netflix that teased a second season like the Dark Crystal Age of Resistance get axed while dumb shit like Emily in Paris are greenlit for a second season.

Soldiers and vets trying to seek help and “files getting moved along” and doctors doing the bare minimum to help is the story of the last 5 years of my life. The last 3 years of my life have been wasted because no one told me a fitness for duty had been done using my medical records determining I wasn’t fit for duty (I was initially told my only option was to chapter out because I couldn’t pass a pt test anymore, but then the chapter paperwork was stalled when said fitness for duty found me unfit and no one ever told me). I thought I was waiting to chapter out of the military for over a year (and couldn’t be promoted) while my injuries got progressively worse and my Primary Care didn’t really help in any way more than prescribing mild painkillers and putting me on profile for a week. I had to practically beg him to see the physical therapist. I was told that I could potentially qualify for the med board process about a year ago, but needed to do a fitness for duty assessment with my PC. Then when I scheduled the fitness for duty, giving them a request memo from my company commander stating what type of appointment I needed, they scheduled me for a completely different type of appointment. When I explained that I was there to do a fitness for duty they left me alone in the exam room for an hour trying to figure out what went wrong, then told me I couldn’t do the assessment because there wasn’t enough time to do it in my 20 minute allotment which they wasted looking for the memo, and that I hadn’t had a permanent profile, because he wouldn’t put me on profile for more than a week, so he would have to basically do a bunch of appointments assessing all my injuries one at a time exhausting all options of health care before they could determine that I should be put on a “permanent” profile so I could get the fitness for duty so I could start the med board process. Then covid got worse and all my appointments got canceled cause of lockdown and months went by where my mental health deteriorated significantly where I had to basically beg behavior health to be seen by a doctor to discuss potentially needing to go on antidepressants cause I was having intrusive and suicidal thoughts. I wasn’t sleeping, my apartment is still a mess, I could barely get out of bed except to go to work, nothing brought me joy, I was in pain, I was so stressed from work because we were grossly understaffed and a toxic contractor was never at work and manipulating everyone around her and the other contractor that did work was pregnant and I tried to minimize her stress by taking on more work. I had multiple breakdowns and panic attacks both at home and at work, I developed an ulcer, I was irritable and always lost my temper. The entire time not knowing that a fitness for duty assessment had been done 2 and a half years prior and some high level person on some board didn’t do anything about it to let me or my commander know despite us constantly asking what was going on with my situation. Finally, last September I found all this out and am waiting for the Physical Evaluation Board to make their assessment from the Medical Evaluation Board’s findings, but essentially if my doctor had done their job 5 years ago when I was initially injured and determined that I was disabled to the point where I wasn’t fit for duty and instead gave me a waiver without my knowledge saying I was ok to serve despite the injuries, so that when I couldn’t pass a pt test because of the pain I was in, the last 5 years of my life would have been very different. I might not be so depressed and anxious that I need antidepressants and sleep pills, I could have been with my family during this pandemic instead of being isolated and alone dealing with a toxic situation on my own thinking about suicide. I’m just glad that I’m finally almost out of this whole fucked up situation.
Contact your local VA rep!! There are people who volunteer to assist members through the VA process. Request that the patient advocate accompany you to all medical appoints at your MTF because of what happened (or if you can afford it a lawyer, they cannot deny you a chaperone). Inform your command that you will be opening an investigation (dont give a fuck about what they think or say) and go to the IG and open a case, reprisal for going to the IG is not tolerated. Then go to records in the clinic and request a copy of your entire medical history you are entitled to it, they can not say no. Let me repeat Get Your Records Now! Otherwise they'll just disappear as soon as your out. You want those records for your IDES when you get evaluated by the VA, before you do make sure they're correct and every diagnosis is listed. Anything not listed on your diagnosis pg needs to be added. Buddy letters also can support your claims as an accepted document by the VA. There's a lot more to it but that's a start. Seriously though contact your local va rep office!!! (there should be one on your base) talk to other vets you know about the process. Google search. Shit, that is fucked up. My mom served for a couple decades and had some similar health neglect stuff happen. Don't give up on advocating for yourself or having other people help you advocate. I'm glad you're close to getting out- hopefully you can pick yourself up and this can be a new begining
Thank you... we have the same reaction to this movie... but it hit me hard because i never had anybody in the army to go to war.. so it made me understand that part way better :)
@@Malum09 I've never seen her in anything else prior to this movie. At first I thought the character was being played by Joey King before I looked it up.
Am I the only one who liked this movie? All I'm seeing is negative reviews. But I really enjoyed the style of it and how the told the story. Also I thought Tom really gave it his all in his performance.
Good for you! I didn’t like it and I though the directing was terrible and the film too flashy but that’s just my opinion so it’s great if you liked it
As someone who was in the Army although never combat deployed, I liked a lot of points you were making. I enjoyed how you addressed the abusive recruiting tactics. The military frowns on people who have a history of depression and self harm, and my recruiter literally helped me come up with lies for why I had scars to tell at MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station). I also like how you worded that phrase people who just wanted to commit violence and never should have been allowed to join the military. I knew guys who said we should turn the Middle East into a parking lot and regularly used the phrase sand n****rs. These guys freaked me the hell out. I joined for lack of better a idea of what to do with myself after a tramatic experience. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of being forced to kill anyone, which is why I chose to be a medic. These people did and do exist, and as a country the US should be terrified for the populations they unleash these socio and psychopaths upon.
I like the topic of the movie and the acting and the overall story but I hated the cinematography and other decisions. Like the whole Breaking the 4th wall and narration just took me out of the movie and the way some scenes were shot
I agree with Stuckmann's review. Russos' stylistic choices were distracting and self indulgent, especially the slow mo scenes with classical music. It was also very long and very depressing. I had more fun watching Gaspar Noe's Climax than this.
This movie deserved to be a 6/7 episode mini series. There is so much content here, so many important reflections that need more time to be fully developed... I can’t believe they tried to squeeze so much into 2h30mins, it feels devoid of any real depth.
I tried to join the military once, but they said I wasn't in good enough shape. I said I thought that's what basic was for. i didn't hear from them again...
Since you mentioned Apple TV, I am curious what would you think about Ted Lasso, the tv show. I know football aspects would be boring but the concept of Ted being always happy and positive, and how that kinda crumbles back on him... Recently watched it and I am thinking about rewatching it since I find it SO good
ok I'm weirdly partial to 'trying to look older Tom Holland' because he is giving me major Griffin Newman vibes and I cannot resist man about town Griffy Newms
As someone who’s been through the addiction rodeo I can say this is actually a pretty accurate depiction of what it’s like. Even reaching the point where you’re ready to hand yourself in to the cops to go to jail as a last resort to get clean (it doesn’t work but when you’re on drugs you aren’t thinking clearly regardless)
I have a little experience in the army system here in Canada, and it's just as predatory. They literally set up booths at ELEMENTARY AND HIGH-SCHOOL EVENTS! They brand it almost like a fun little after school activity.
This could have been an amazing show, too much for a movie to properly cover, but I think the film was better than some say. It wasn't the best but it wasn't that bad either, I think among the reviews I've seen you've been the most fair and dive into a lot more of it which I appreciate.
the sad part is how real these things are. I was in the navy, so a bit less intense than the army when it came to combat, but you still did end up with those stereotypes. coming home was hard. just an incredibly painful moment to realize how much the world moved on without you. I brought home so many problems, night terrors, ptsd, etc. but my wife was working her way out the door before I even made it in. and the VA! don't even get me started. I've been having more problems, and I started trying to get help for it, and Ive seen my doctor twice over the last year and a half (though I did get a brain scan as well, that was neat). I joined the Navy because I was sad. Bipolar but didn't really know it then. and the day i had one of my worst crashes, the navy recruiter called. I could talk for days about my experience of the BS in the Navy. Sadly, haven't read, nor watched this, but it seems like something I may enjoy. Thanks for this video!
This reminds me of my dad...he was a special forces sergeant in the army during the war in Iraq/Afghanistan. He broke his back and was sent home, but his ptsd was really bad and he struggled with drugs and alcohol for years afterwards
Man. This just makes me think about how one of my former roommates was trying to join the military because he didn't know what else to do after college (he's also pretty conservative) and my other former roommate, his girlfriend, didn't want to be sitting around waiting for him and also wasn't sure what to do after college so _she_ decided to join the army despite being fairly liberal. The guy was unable to get in due to past conditions his mom exaggerated or straight up made up and his girlfriend's now going to basic in a couple of months while he tries to get into the CIA so he's not just an army wife 🤦
Man I still remember my younger brother who wanted so badly to become a Marine! he devoted a large amount of his time bodybuilding and trying to pass the tests the very moment he was legally old enough to enlist! As much as I hate his ex-girlfriend for all this should she put him through but she did in my service from what I see by being a huge distraction that he was forced to give that up. I have nothing bad to say to our servicemen and women! B******* Brock Racine f*** it in all its forms no matter where it is military government they seem to exist the try to organize everything... And cover s*** up to avoid having to fully commit to doing their job for us poor Folk who they pull into that s*** what are its the banks wanted to use other people's money so they can make themselves richer and if that failed not suffer any consequences themselves it'll just be the poor folk who had their money used without their permission or were tricked into giving their permission! Or this s*** with the veterans I mean we already saw an example of how veterans will be treated moving forward right around after the Vietnam War! Remember when veterans were treated as f****** precious... But I'm sure the cracks in the floor we're already in place before the Vietnam War they just weren't noticeable until that point and start to become more and more noticeable as the corruption has left the festering. Because you know what they say when you have an infection you don't ignore it you deal with it right there and then if you ignored it will eventually Fester grow and become worse and very very noticeable! Hope the ones you're mentioning are doing well :-)
I haven't seen this, but I'm getting the impression this is a version of Requiem for a Dream but with a military subplot from the trailer. I might be wrong but that's definitely my initial impressions.
There are tons of reasons that people are joining. When I tried to join the Navy, I heard tons of stories of the guys I was with were going because they got dumped. It happens way more often than people think. Hell I had to join because my parents gave me a choice, have two jobs, or join the military.
Hah! Next you'll be telling them that Gina Carano isn't an anti-Semitic alt-right Trump supporter. Get real, Qanon! Oh by the way, I was being sarcastic!

God, how many movies are going to have aged-up characters that look like they got their props from Party City?
I don’t know but parks and rec is better than the office
You'd think that with how phenomenal de-aging technology in movies have come that doing the reverse with young actors should be easy.

I think a miniseries would have been the best treatment for sure
It would not have been as entertaining as a miniseries
Mofuckas need to make miniseries/high budget tv more acceptable for source material that's suited to it. The more I think about Queens Gambit as a 2 hour film the more I want to throw up
Honestly yes, it would also fix the pacing problem
@@ericstorm6582 It would. When you cram too much stuff in a feature length film it fucks up with the pacing and at worst makes the whole thing hard to follow. With a miniseries of 6-8 episodes they can flesh out plot points without dragging it out
Hollywood will cast actors who look like they're 30 year olds as highschoolers, and cast actors who look like they're 18 as full grown adults....
OMG YOU ARE SO CORRECT
The movie takes place when they are 17/18 and goes from there so I think they got actors that look that age to show just how messed up our society and military are. Our government allows for kids who are seniors in high school to make a decision that will destroy their lives forever.

It's rotted all the way through
The VA is such bs
Damn, what medication caused psychosis for you? That sucks
@@ByzantineDarkwraith Effexor 🤮 it gave me the most horrifying, debilitating sleep paralysis too
Why do you have ptsd

"Have you ever been joined the military after getting dumped on bad?"
So, when I was at university, I had some pretty bad neurological issues.
So yes. I have been dumped so bad, I tried to go to the military.

you got to love that part where she wants to present herself as being virtuous by Kitty dating the sick kid...

This is honestly everything I could think about during the "military" chapter of the movie.
Shut up lol
You failed to realize that you are both pawns.
The politicians who ordered and voted for the war should be in prison after an international tribunal, that would be justice.
this is the worst take u couldve gotten from this movie
It has good parts and bad parts. It reminds me of TROS. Some will love it, some will hate it, and that's okay.
I don’t hate it like a lot of people and there’s parts I liked but there just wasn’t enough time to tell this story the way they wanted to and it’s somehow also still so long.

@@randomtinypotatocried I'm glad that happened. Hope you are better now.
@@randomtinypotatocried glad to hear that you got out of that shitty situation. And the paperwork good grief was that ridiculous lol.
Thanks for another enjoyable video 👍✌️🙏❤️
Glad your addiction is in the past! Sobriety is hard as fuck, but worth it
@@autumn7809
Thank you I appreciate that. Yes it’s extremely hard as fuck and took me over 10 yrs to get completely clean. Heroin is such an evil drug I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy, even thinking about going through the withdrawals sends chills down my spine so I appreciate your reply. Good luck to everyone that’s going through any sort of addiction, it’s a literal killer. Thanks again 👍✌️🙏
It's like they saw Baby Driver and were like "hey these characters are exactly the same let's end the movie the same way!"
I feel really bad for Tom Holland. This and Chaos Walking are steps in the wrong direction.
I REALLY hope the next Spider-Man is actually a great movie. Despite Watts being the director again(unfortunately and so undeserved) , maybe they can flesh out Tom’s talents a bit better
@Jam Drew second one kinda blows
I personally think this shows Tom’s acting skills and is kind of a gateway into more movies for him
There's apparently a movie that's a short film of Alice Cullen's life? I've only just found out about it even though it's from like 2015, you should cover it as part as your lil twilight series (not like you need an excuse to talk about Alice 😁)🖤
Holy shit name??
Wait, what? How come I never heard about this?
It’s called the Mary Alice Brandon files, if it’s the one I’m thinking of. Highly recommend.
It’s on my list! I’m doing Eclipse this month then covering some of the side projects and a really weird fan fiction :) still trying to decide if I want to do the Alice stuff separate or combine it with the Bree Tanner book
@@AmandaTheJedi will be sure to look out for it!. I've been enjoying reliving the nostalgia of the movies through your videos. Especially with that added adult perspective roast, it's truly, 👩🏼🍳💕👌🏻
I read the book in preparation for this movie to come out and I think Amanda summed it up well "it felt too long and also not long enough". It a first person story that manages to have very little emotion in it so you don't get attached to any of the characters. I was hoping the movie would fix this but I don't think it did.
It sounds like they tried to do a mashup of Jarhead and Requiem for a Dream but couldn’t capture the magic of either one.
the most weird thing is.... As much as things go on and all... it's so boring.i could barely make it to the end and by the end.... i didn't CARE about any character at all.

Lmfao good
After watching the trailer, I already have a feeling that it wasn't going to be good. When it came, I was forced to watch it with my friends (it was only because Tom holland was in it.)
And I stand corrected.
I liked The devil all the Time which Tom is the lead in. His accent and acting was top notch as was the entire cast.
He needs a better manager.
Devil all the time is great to me and sadly chaos walking isn’t in Canada yet
Don't forget Onward! Great movie and he did a really good voice acting job.
@@LoraK31 yeah, i like onward, but i cannot take chris pratt's voice seriously, and its not really that creative with the premise. Plus, its a touch confused and all over the place. Its overall underwhelming

@@AmandaTheJedi ok so yesterday the word "cherry" was trending on tumblr, both because of this movie and because of a character called "cherry blossom" from the anime sk8 the infinity (a recap episode of said anime aired yesterday, the show's pretty good if you ask me). if you entered the cherry tag it was split between the movie and the anime, like 45% movie 55% gay skating anime, doubt either would be trending if not for the timing lol

A miniseries would sound great actually. I love Tom Holland as an actor, I feel like he could carry a longer project like that.

@@AmandaTheJedi Sometimes critiques are like chili. The best ones have time to simmer.
@@AmandaTheJedi It has been renewed for a second season. Maybe when that comes out you can critique the show, compare it to the first season and the controversy it has drummed up.
@Jam Drew I freaking loved I am Not Okay with This. Amanda also reviewed that show and she loved it. Shame we won't be getting a second season. Just shows how fickle Netflix is with their hit shows.
Ok I get the direction wasn’t great but Tom Holland and his story was good.
You definitely nailed it, both too long and too short. But in that way I actually enjoyed the dope life section taking up so much time. It was my favorite section, especially seeing such a drastic acting departure for Tom Holland.

Soldiers and vets trying to seek help and “files getting moved along” and doctors doing the bare minimum to help is
the story of the last 5 years of my life.
Get the IG and Patient advocate involved and you'll be amazed how quicklythr drs start actually doing stuff.
Shit, that is fucked up. My mom served for a couple decades and had some similar health neglect stuff happen. Don't give up on advocating for yourself or having other people help you advocate. I'm glad you're close to getting out- hopefully you can pick yourself up and this can be a new begining

I’m so happy to catch this early. I’ve been waiting to hear your thoughts on this!!
I like the topic of the movie and the acting and the overall story but I hated the cinematography and other decisions. Like the whole Breaking the 4th wall and narration just took me out of the movie and the way some scenes were shot
So the character worked at a pizza place, played by Tom Holland, who also plays Peter Parker/Spider Man?
Finally I can say ‘Pizza time’
I agree with Stuckmann's review.

As someone who’s been through the addiction rodeo I can say this is actually a pretty accurate depiction of what it’s like. Even reaching the point where you’re ready to hand yourself in to the cops to go to jail as a last resort to get clean (it doesn’t work but when you’re on drugs you aren’t thinking clearly regardless)

the sad part is how real these things are.
