A girl who could run across the world in not even a minute? Weak. A man who can concoct contraptions that can even seal away the powers of another? Weak. If they just communicated the fact that Ikaris is more of a dollar-store-superman, I can understand why he would be seen as the strongest. It's just that upon seeing, I dunno, Makkari running around the world that I fail to understand how she could lose exactly.
@@thatguyorange902 well, just like she did in the last fight, also, i think that that scene shouldnt be take so serious, like clark kent in smallville running aroung the world in second, its not in real time, se is really fast, but not that fast, if she was that fast, ikaris would have no chance, but he not only took her punches but put her out of the game a while
Exactly! Before the ending sequence of the movie, there was literally nothing to suggest that the other Eternals didn't surpass him in power in literally every way. Ikaris is such a bad character dude.
The second I realized that Ikaris was about to fly into the sun I doubled over silently wheezing in the theater because that's the worst planting and payoff I've ever seen
The only way I can think to save it is if unlike Icarus, Ikaris went to the sun to somehow get more power and return stronger. I still don't buy Marvel (or many other comic or non comic book-rekated deaths) at this point
Yes! I was watching it and just thinking how there were some elements which genuinely had potential. I think they just tried to do too much here and weren't able to showcase their world and characters the best way they could have. As a show, with the right people writing for it, I could totally see this being great
A miniseries that stretches all of human history, only ending in the present, would’ve been awesome. Honestly, setting most of the film in the present day felt like a huge missed opportunity.
I haven't even watched it but just realizing that there are like 7 primary characters in this movie I was like 'this feels like it should've been a series'
Yeah and hammered out the weird are we caring about humans or not? Are we terrible uncaring gods or not? Are we loyal friends or coworkers? What would motivate one of them betray the other?
Sersie had to connect with all the eternals to stop the emergence so doesn't that include kingo? Im just imagining him on the toilet and then all of a sudden he's floating into the ceiling like "what is happening."
It feels to me like there were probably scenes edited out - like maybe the run time was too long so they cut him out of that bc it made the least impact but somehow in doing that they forgot that now it doesn’t really make sense anymore… 😅🤷🏻♀️
@@ellax325 I think him not being in the final battle was fine. While he ultimately agreed with Ikaris and wanted the Celestial to emerge, he didn't feel right fighting his former team, potentially to the death, so he just bowed out of the conflict altogether. Part of me was expecting a "Changed my mind, kid" moment and I was pleasantly surprised it didn't happen.
@@DJmouchi777 i feel like a lot of the weirder points in this movie are like that tbh. Like, there COULD be a cut bit where he does come back or something like that, but also, it kinda fits with how the final act is a (and i hate the fact this word is overused to death) subversion of what marvels done before. Either way, its definitely a thing lmao
I actually thought that deviant was going to help Sersi's group, since preventing the emergency of Tiamut felt more in line with his hatred of the Celestials.
same here, when he saw them fighting Icarus and when he jumped down at him I thought he would help the other eternals. Even before that once he shared his side of the story I thought they would join
Yeah it seemed like they'd gained the intelligence to be like, wait, I don't want this planet that I am on to blow up! But no his purpose was to keep Athena out of the fight.
Druig and Makkari had so much more chemistry in the tiny amount of scenes they had together than the main couple. I hope they give them more room to grow in the next movie(s) :)
I had the exact same thought. I didn't care about Sersi and Ikaris, but when I saw those two on screen I was so engaged and I loved the chemistry and tension they had
@@nelliekat403 Very true, although I had the same feeling towards them during their happy scenes (before they broke up). Druig and Makkari on the other hand had something effortless about them, or to me at least :)
@@AmandaTheJedi I just don’t understand how one of these ‘practically unkillable’ immortal beings could be deaf. It reminds me of this joke about how the fact that cult leader David Koresh wore glasses should have been clue number 1 that he was not “Jesus Christ reincarnated”. Because why would God bring Jesus back to life near-sighted?
@@TalentCaldwell It wasn't explained well in the film. She wasn't created deaf, she lost her hearing by being fast enough to break the sound barrier and all those sonic booms did irreparable damage. They're also not really unkillable. We saw several of them get killed; it's mainly just that they have enhanced physical stats and won't die of old age because they're machines. When they do die though, Arishem just makes another copy in his forge and restores them to factory settings.
@@quetch2 That... makes significantly *less* sense! Sonic booms are created by the buildup of pressure waves *trailing* a supersonic object, and also wouldn't be that damaging if created by something the size of a human.
The casting directors and/or Chloe knew exactly what they were doing when they cast Richard "King of the North" Madden and Kit "I don't want it" Harrington as two characters that were both in love with a character named Sersi
I am sorry, but that took me out of the movie so many times. Every time they mentioned her name I just thought of GOT. I really don't think that was good.
@@BeGo127 it was WHY the movie is so unpopular: LAZINESS. And you're absolutely correct: YOU CANNOT CAST FAMOUS FACES for mysterious or new MCU characters. Takes us out of the film EVERY TIME. (No one thinks Feige auditioned hundreds of actors for SKYFOX and picked the best!! Feige wants to hire ALL FAMOUS FACES so he can fanboy out, and Harry Styles was ONLY Picked for ugly reasons, not artistic ones.)
FEW PEOPLE watched "INHUMANS" (the worst CBM thing ever made!) (after MCU dumped that turd to ABC tv, which was funded by IMAX, not Disney)....and I just realized the Ikaris death scene felt RIGHT OUT OF THE UNINTENTIONALLY HILARIOUS INHUMANS!
Honestly, this movie should've been a disney plus show with the setup being Sersi, Sprite and Ikaris going on a journey to get the band back together, with each episode focusing on 1 of the characters back story and what they were doing for 7000 years, with occasional encounters with Kro the deviant.
@@shelleysprouse5687 They maybe could have done it if they just let it be 3 hours and 20 minutes like the story needed, or at least 10 minutes longer to rough off the edges.
Nah.. I think this movie would've work fine if it been split into two movies. First movie for introduction, start with why they went to earth, showing the difference between their personality (like Ikaris loyalty to Arishem), showing how close they were to each others, making the audience attach to them and ending the movie with all of them spliting up. Its not like MCU movie need to be in chronological order anyway. Then start the second movie with the present time, showing how their life now, fokus on one character (Sersi, I guess. I don't mind that she was with Sprite, but at least show us the dynamics of their life together before the attack so Sprite behaviour make sense), suddenly getting attack by deviant making her worried since she thought deviants no longer exists on earth. I don't mind if this part happened just like in the movie since by this time audience supposed to already connected with the characters in the first movie. How Sersi find Ajax's body then find the others to defeat the deviants since that's why they were send to earth in the first place. The movie can introduce their new life by flashback when she found them. I think it's better if Sersi found out the real reason they been send to earth after their regroup not before. Then the conflicts between them whether to follow Arishem or not. And at least show us Ikaris try to stop them from finding the truth but they found out anyway and try to convince them to follow Arishem after they found out the truth. Not just keep quiet like he did in the movie. I don't think to many characters in one movie is the real problem. The problem is they try to squeeze to many storyline in one movie. Guardian of Galaxy also have many characters, but James Gunn managed to make it work somehow.
He’s one of the only reasons my brother and I went to see this. Well.... him, Angelina, GoT guys, and our girl from the walking dead. Basically we just wanted to supported all that actors independent of actually wanting to see the movie for marvel purposes. We were let down. None of the characters are really given what they needed. Everyone was cut short and it sucks for everyone including Chloe. Disney.... Disney.... Disney... now let’s see if we get a “Chloe cut” with 6 parts lol
@@matthiasjilimin700 the actress for makari. She plays the dead character on walking dead as well. Which good job for them finally having representation that doesn’t feel forced in any way
The main criticism that I heard basically everywhere, is that this should have been a series, or at least a mini series, and... yeah. I couldn't agree more.
Yeah I mean if it's just like 5 people like the GOTG oke it could've work as a movie but this is 10 new characters to the MCU that we barely know anything about them cuz the movie couldn't even balance which one should be the main focus. The third act however was a massive let down for me cuz it was so god damn messy I was very tired at watching the movie
Also, this movie makes me want to write a thesis paper on religion in the mcu. Like we have Norse gods Greek gods. Peggy’s funeral is at a church so we know some form of Christianity exist. Peter Quill also references Jesus.
People keep comparing these two relationships but they were intentionally different. Ikaris/Sersi have this transcendent love, but it's... kinda broken. Because Ikaris has kept himself closed off from Sersi for so long, knowing the truth of their situation. He is a soldier, always has been; he keeps his feelings close to him. Everything's not all right between them, they are (excuse the pun) eternally at odds. In every life, on every planet, they will be - that's why Ikaris well, does what he does. There's a sense of emptiness and tragedy there. Druig/Makkari are different. They have this youthful energy, they don't have this crisis between them. Druig as a character is supposed to come as a surprise, you see he has a big heart under there, despite appearances. You root for them because the characters aren't having this wedge between them (Though it helps the actors do have insane chemistry). A lot of the differences in the pairings and the reception thereof comes down to the fact Ikaris and Druig are foils to each other, and their character arcs subvert expectations. Idk just my opinion lol I just feel the two pairings served very different purposes and were executed well along with that vision, which makes audience reception unsurprising.
@@caitlinb35 it’s funny because when I saw it a second time, the relationships were different for me. The only true romantic relationship is between Sersi and Ikaris, but I believe the implication is that sersi has a greater capacity for love. Love for humanity, the other eternals, Ikaris, etc. Ikaris was in love with only sersi more than sersi was in love with Ikaris. I think sprite knew that too which is why she was in love with the idea of love and projects that on Ikaris. She wanted to be loved in the way Ikaris loves sersi. Druig and Makkari, and Thena and Gilgamesh have soulmate vibes. It’s not romantic, it’s something deeper that comes from their experiences with each other and the world they live in.
As the movie is and without adding or removing on my own, ikaris seemed obsessed more than actually in love with her. From the moment they “meet” he already has doe eyes and so does she. Why? They barely know anything which means arisem either made them that way or allowed them to retain something cultivated in former lives. Either way it doesn’t come off as genuine love to me. As it goes there never is a series of truly deep conversations that would lead them to being in love. Not really. The sex scene was random and honesty made me uncomfortable because cersi looked like she didn’t really want to be there. Ikaris looked like he didn’t want to have sex with her and was just doing it for reasons.... then he goes off and leaves her but keeps tabs. Basically stalking her for thousands of years. That’s weird but ok. Once they get back together he continuously insults her capabilities and ultimately insults the fundamental traits that make her who she is. Which tells me he never really loved her he loved the ideas around her. Maybe arishem knew that ikaris would be the thing that stops cersi from evolving her powers. Who knows.... but this slap stick romance could have been completely erased from the movie and the only person it would effect would be sprite. Gilgamesh and thena are shown continuous showing their love for each other. Not telling. While ikaris spends thousands of years sulking and running from cersi, Gilgamesh devotes himself to thena and watches over her and shoulders her burdens with her. Willingly. Without complaint. I understand people want to believe they are just friends, but I’m not sure why honestly. Friendships doesn’t happen like that and defo not as depicted in the MCU. I wish they had had the screen time that ikaris and cersi got. Then there’s makari and druig. They had all the potential in the world but they got shafted. Not just in the romance department but just as individual characters. They could have done some cooler stuff with makari and druig. Really cool. But they went with druig runs a commune and makari locked herself in the ship with trinkets. They deserved better.
@@vikkidonn wanting more of the characters at least speaks to how well the characters were portrayed and how the movie at the least left seeds to interest us. In my mind, romance was not an imperative for Thena and Gilgamesh. They were warrior companions. The only person who could stop Thena was Gilgamesh, and his dedication to her romantic or otherwise was deep. Given that druig and Makkari weren’t originally a thing until the actors chemistry inspired it, I found it to be a nice combination character wise. They both have walls that keep them from communicating with the world in the way the others can. Druig could easily control everyone but then that creates a barrier for sincere even interaction between him and humans. Still though, he cares enough about them to want to use his powers for their benefit. Makkari can communicate with humans through her voice and her isolation seemed deep to me. She was far less interested in the people and far more interested in their stuff. She hoarded art and artifacts. She may not have loved people but she loved what they create. Those two having a sort of outsiders black sheep bond was fantastic. ikaris and sersi having a dysfunctional relationship is I think the point. I never got the vibe that sersi was so in love with ikaris that it ever tempted her to change her position. Whether Iove or infatuation, ikaris was a slave to his feelings for sersi from the beginning. He only found what love really meant when he found that he could not kill her and would have to give up his mission and submitted to the Uni-mind. If we’re to reflect on the depth of love in the movie, sersi’s love for humanity is the biggest one. Thena, Gilgamesh, Druig and Makkari, and Phastos. They all found love of some kind. Kingo found love for himself and his adventures as a star, followed by ikaris and sprite who found contempt for their feelings around love. Sersi’s forgiveness of sprite is another example of how deeply she loved everyone, much like Ajak had no hate for ikaris when he betrayed her.
That was my first comment coming out of the cinema: I liked it but it should have been two movies with the plot twist/revelation happening at the end of the first one.
I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one flabbergasted when Sersei helped Sprite right after Sprite literally stabbed her in the back. I know I would have just let Sprite suffer.
Yeah they were so quick to forgive her after she was ready to let the world(and her family) die because she was thirsty. I get that Sersei is supposed to be one who’s compassionate to everyone but this girl was going to kill you!
@@dreamiinotdream730 I mean it does have the effect of negating her as any kind of threat right? She's human, so no powers and dead in the next 100 years.
Such mixed feelings about this film. It’s beautifully made, but the writing is a total mess. It’s insane to me that Sersi and Ikaris get more focus than anyone else, and yet I still can’t tell you three traits about either of them.
DUDE, SAME. They were just like two blank papers walking around. None showed signs of leadership or Even having a personality. I still don't know why any of them were in love with each other. They could have di3d and I not only would not have care but PREFERED so the other characters would had have more screentime.

Why does Kevin Feige keep hiring independent filmmakers if he will make them follow Marvel's formula anyway, instead of giving them creative freedom? At least, after the initial failed attempts with the DCU, the producers at Warner Bros have learned from their mistakes and now they're letting directors like Todd Phillips and James Gunn do their job, with great results.
That's exactly why they hire independent filmmakers. It's been part of that very formula as well for quite a while. They're smaller and have less pull in the industry so it's easy for Disney to bend them to their will. They know they'll just get replaced, and then they'll never work for Disney again. I'm shocked that Sam Raimi is dipping his toes back into this world, after his 'Spiderman 3' experience with Sony. I'm sure he didn't sign on with Disney without a contract that minimized studio interference.
@@Pantheragem Director Lucrecia Martel about Black Widow: “What they told me was ‘we need a female director because we need someone who is mostly concerned with the development of Scarlett Johansson’s character.' If marvel truly had a formula how come eternal feels very different compared to shang chi or black widow most of the time the directors get to do what they wanted marvel only interferes with the easter eggs and references and setups to the mcu
I thought the biggest “mistake” they made (except too little Thena and Makkari - I think that’s her name… honestly aside from Sersei, Ikaris, Thena and Sprite the character’s names weren’t mentioned enough during the movie for me to remember - I had to look them up afterwards…) so the biggest mistake they made was to not show time. Literally the ETERNALS thing is being eternal… living through history. Experiencing everything. Presumably having a lot of growth/development to the point in where they would side with humanity. But we didn’t get to see that? We had a few flashbacks (like… 3 or 4 maybe) and they cut back to present day world ending scenario… I would have much preferred to follow a story of them living through the ages, battling monsters, each other and themselves as they come to terms with a) being immortal b) not being human c) wanting to be human - I just think there would have been much more potential for inter-character drama and conflict and tension 🤷🏻♀️ I enjoyed it. It was a basic action superhero film and i cheered when Ikaris was kneed in the nuts and punched im the face and loved Thena and Makkari but like… they were hardly in this. Thena had the most character struggle/drama which made it interesting. The others had backstories they left beging to fight a BBEG
Yes!!!!!! Exactly what I thought!!! Why introduce immortal characters and then not even show them being immortals, being eternals in History?? I had the same problem with the Netflix movie « The Old Guard », it frustrated me so much, I want to see them living the great moments of History, it’s so interesting!
I just love that they actually never had a villain. No one was really right, no one was really wrong. And I adore that Kingo is kind of an embodiment of that. He believes the celestials are to be preserved, but he would never fight his family, so he leaves. A great moment.
Yeah, I agree! While Amanda's right that Kingo doesn't do anything plot-wise in terms of the final conflict, I think it does a lot thematically. Ikaris' readiness to betray and kill the others felt so extreme, but having Kingo agree with his goal but refuse to support his methods helped give more weight to Ikaris' belief that the celestial should be allowed to emerge.
It was 1000% consistent. Just because you aren't punching your problems doesn't mean you don't care about them. They definitely 100% should have said Kingo was in the unimind though unless that is some strange plot device coming up because the range would literally have to be the entire planet as their connection to Tiamut during their emergence is the only things that saves him. It would have made a lot of sense and been 2 lines of dialogue to completely reframe it - and leave out at least some of that awkward misunderstanding when all of them are connecting but only some have the bracelet. Showing Kingo would have revealed its planet wide and involuntary.
The movie has its issues but I enjoyed it. It's not as bad as people say. Its different and I loved that about this film. You see what the formula is for their movies and it becomes repetitive. I like they're branching out and trying new things. The ending scene with Arishem was ballsy and didn't expect it. Overall these characters will be tweaked in the future and can't wait for them to meet the other heroes. Makkari, Druig, Thena, and Gilgamesh were my favorite.
It's not a bad movie at all, atleast not a disaster like Fan4stic. It could've been better, honestly because there's so many new characters to be introduced and have a development, it should've been a Disney+ series instead of a 2 1/2 movie that made it overstuffed everything. The pacing too was kinda fucked up that made the narrative a bit of a mess
I honestly loved Ikaris and watching his inner conflict and how it shaped him, I bawled my eyes out when he died but that may have been because I was on my period lol
but Eternals ISN'T that singular nor unique. The humor felt mostly FORCED which is common in CBMs; the action was mostly GENERIC; no stakes of any kind; name ONE thing interesting about Thena! And Zhao used thousands of CBM CLICHES that she didn't need to!
when ikaris flew into the sun me and my friend couldn’t help but burst out laughing. he turned to me and said “they didn’t even get the icarus analogy right, he flew TOO close to the sun, not into it”💀
I kind of liked that at least one Eternal disagreed with the others about stopping the emergence, but didn't go evil and try to kill his friends over his beliefs. Maybe that really was all Kingo was there for. To be the reasonable one on the side of "you know what, humans aren't really so special that they should be saved, if saving them costs even more lives in the long run."
My main problem with the movie is that it’s literally full of 7,000 year old characters and yet there’s absolutely no sense of time passing. It should have felt like Boyhood but on an insane level
I honestly feel like Eternals would've worked better as a series where they had more time to flesh everything out. Hell even more movies or making it in parts would've worked better, and I think I would've enjoyed the movie more if that was the case. The movie isn't bad nor is it amazing, but I don't think I'd watch it again due to the issues it has
Basically Eternals should have done what Marvel already did with the Avengers and they knew works well Instead they tried to do what DC did with the Justice League, and it went about the same way
@@altromonte15 Eh not exactly. Guardians of the Galaxy worked and Eternals could have too. I think if they focused on their history as one movie and then did a vol 2 with present day it would have been better.
There was a tv series where a team of incredibly powerful demigodlike figures, including Gilgamesh, with impossible physical and magical powers work together to save humanity from hordes of demonic monsters, including a revived Tiamat. It's called Fate/Grand Order Babylonia, and Marvel couldn't even manage to rip it off correctly.
I hadn’t seen the movie yet, but I’m curious: do they ACTUALLY show him going into the Sun or is it just inferred? Because the Sun is like 93 million miles away.
@@_sarah.honey- That… sounds stupid. I just looked it up and it takes almost 20 years to fly from the Earth to the Sun going 550 mph. 20 YEARS. Ikarus does it in seconds?!
This movie reminded me that Angelina Jolie is a great actress. I wish more of the actors got to flex their skills (like Lauren Ridloff who was great the little she was in), but I did love all the characters. The plot was super meh tho :/
Needs more Salma Hayek too...from what I've heard she was barely in it, killed off in order to serve as a "team convergence" purpose, & then quickly forgotten. 🤔
I hope when we see these characters again, we get more time with Ajak and Gilgamesh. They're androids, so new bodies can be made for them, and we know their memories are stored in that pretty lighted geode thing. They could even be reprinted as part of Sersi's trial, so there's already a reason to have them there. If Ikarus died pulling his Dark Phoenix maneuver, he could be reprinted too. Then the gang would all be there except Thena, Makkari and Druig, who could totally just rock their own separate movie and I would be happy.
Like, I'm sure Ikaris will be back. We didn't see him die. I actually LOVE Arishem as the villain in the ending. He's not self-important like Thanos, he's properly emotionless like I'd imagine a cosmic eternal god should be. And he does not funk around, he straight up APPEARS in front of Earth, does his thing, leaves.
I wish they went into more details about Angelina’s character too. She remembered her past lives, and went into a strange trance when freaking out about Centauri 6.
The one thing that kept bugging me the most throughout the movie was them using BC and AD instead of BCE and CE. And every time I was like "Sersi the museum curator would never be okay with this"
@@cherchehacknostale the sciences and social sciences have been mostly using BCE and CE for the last few decades bc they arent religiously charged. The joke is that Sersi, being an anthropologist or historian would most likely avoid using BC or AD herself

Eternals was the first Marvel movie (and possibly any movie) where I was so bored I was looking at the ceiling and wondering how much longer I had to sit through the movie. When we were leaving, my brother told me he wished we just saw Shang-Chi in theaters again.
First movie should have just been about the eternals through the ages and fighting the deviants, ending in the scene of them splitting up. Then the reveal about their true purpose in the second movie would have more meaning to the audience. But i'm honestly tired of world/universe ending events, why can't it just be a more local issue.
I’m surprised you forgot the most important part of that final credits scene: Mahershala Ali as Blade off-screen asking Dane if he’s “sure about that.” That got a pretty big reaction from the group next to me. Overall though, I felt Eternals was a movie with good ideas but bit off waaaaaay more than it could chew. I enjoyed the conflict between Ikaris and the Eternals at the end, but it’s such a long and slow trip through non-existent stakes and characters that are just not that well developed. I loved Zhao’s direction, but the script definitely needed work (and honestly could’ve been shorter)
that was not obvious at all that that was Blade unless you looked up the credits or knew a lot about comic books.. like i'm a pretty dedicated MCU viewer and thought it was Fury because I couldn't place the voice
I know it's spelled Mahd Wy'ry, but with how it's pronounced...I was like, "Oh we're all mad weary at this point. That's just burnout from all the stress."
It was an enjoyable experience watching the movie in terms of feeling entertained and seeing little (and I mean LITTLE) hints towards aspects of the MCU. However, I’d have needed a trilogy to feel connected to the characters, there was just nowhere near enough time to make me care about any characters or any relationships or feel any tension for the villains that had no real impact on the movie. I enjoyed the end credits in terms of emotional resonance to my MCU heart than the movie did. I also very much got Man of Steel and Justice League Junior vibes
It does feel a bit like someone either rushed (or simply played it at 4x speed) the entirety of Lord of the Rings. A trilogy would've done it good. But practically, a miniseries would've worked better so the 14 year old could, you know, stay looking that age.
I went to see it in theatres and while I enjoyed it, you are absolutely right that it would've been better as a series rather than a movie Oh, and angelina jolie deserved more screen time, her character was beautiful!
When Ikaris flew into the sun , I had turned to my brother and said to him “ well that’s just lazy writing “ . Other than that the movie felt underwhelmed to me.
Also let's just all collectively acknowledge the fact that the moment that Tiamut guy got anywhere NEAR the crust that the world was already irrevocably FUCKED, let alone breaking through it.
One of the biggest complaints was too many characters with personal plots and not enough time in the movie. Another is these characters aren't exactly famous so not a lot of attention. Lots of fans left after Endgame!
I mean, the tension isn't really meant to be "will a Celestial destroy the Earth?" The tension is "how are they going to stop it/what is it going to cost them?" and the moral/emotional conflict
oh my god thanks for pointing out pip's disastrous CGI, for some reason i haven't seen any reviewer talk abt it but all i could think in the theater was that a video game character just got transported into the MCU like it was fucking ready player one lmao
100% on the more Angelina. It wasn't just that she was amazing (as always) in an action role. Her performance was so nuanced. She did such an amazing job showing all the internal conflict she goes through having to deal with the memory loss and the prospect of losing herself. She needs her own movie.
It should've been a series tbh, there's many new characters and I'm sad that some of them barely have a development throughout the entire movie. Guardians of The Galaxy works as a film because they're only 5 members and they're not too hard to be introduced
@@fjparasite1172 yeah, those characters that's extremely easy to be introduced. Heck Gunn introduced the characters in just about 5 minutes while this kinda takes so long
Can we all agree that Mikkari and Druig should have had more screen time? I love them so much. And I’m on that part of Tiktok that is in love with Druig.
Me and my friend silently clapped when we had the onscreen gay kiss because yay representation but a few seconds later i couldn’t help but be very angry because*where was it in Loki*
In my viewing of the movie, some guy yelled out "Hey, it's Jon Snow!" when Kit Harrington came on screen. Also, some girl started full on screaming when Harry Styles popped up. You know it's not a great movie when the best audience reactions you get are to 1) a thing that happened in another media franchise and 2) a guy who only appeared in a post-credit scene. People were just laughing when Ikaris flew into the sun. Like almost none of the character beats really landed and Gemma Chan and Kit Harrington had like no chemistry in the 2 minutes of screentime they were legally obligated to include to set up his arc in another movie because nothing can just exist without first being set up in another movie, apparently. She had great chemistry with Richard Madden, but like it also didn't need to be in the movie at all and just ate up time. I think the only character I really fully enjoyed was Phastos. Guy had a full complete arc, his actor had great comedic timing, and he had good chemistry with the actors who played his husband and son. Everyone else felt like they needed a 45-minute mini-series episode about them. I'd watch the shit out of Kingo's adventures. That Bollywood dance sequence was incredibly well done, which is not something I ever thought I'd say about an MCU movie. I hope a director's cut of it comes out because I would love to see what Chloe actually wanted to do with it.
I laughed so hard when Ikaris flew into the sun. Hun you can not be that bad of a villain and expect me to be shocked at him killing himself in the most predictable way for a guy called Icarus
(Spoiler alert obv) Throughout the movie my friend and I kept making jokes about how toxic Icarus is (I was ofc biased for Kit Harrington) so when he threw himself into the sun we DIED laughing, you could hear our muffled squeaks throughout the theater
I loved the movie. It's so not great, and it was fun to watch. The characters were so absurdly OP, but it wasn't overbearing. Despite being immortal robots essentially, they're so incredibly human. The moral of the movie is so down to earth- the world-changing stakes actually come second to their personal conflicts. It felt like a prologue, the introductory chapter to a whole story yet to be known. Also, I wheezed so fucking hard when Icarus flew into the son. My friend gave me the most disappointed look in the movie theatre when it happened (2PM on a Tuesday)
"Get the gang back together" It's the first movie! It shouldn't have that feel, unlike the other movies where they had years to build a relationship of sorts, this was just a mess. No knocks on the actors, they didi the best they could with what they were given but, wasn't a terrible movie but wasn't great either. Was easy to tell this was just a step to a bigger movie.
Personally after seeing the movie. I felt disappointed, I could tell from the trailers that the movie was a bit of a mess but had hoped I was wrong. Honestly I think the movie would have done a lot better if it wasn't trying to be in the marvel cinematic universe. Because this movie could have stopped trying to waste time on dropping hints that they existed in the same world as iron man, and instead focused more on flushing out those characters which were so close to being something interesting. Also this should have been a show not a movie so that they could have the time to really get those characters and story flushed out.
To be honest, the badness of this movie is very well hidden in the incredible cast and crew's talent and make you not realize how mediocre the writing was
Not gonna lie, I didn't notice that Kingo wasn't in the final battle. I remember him _saying_ he'd leave but come on they're always do a fake out "hero wants to give up" thing in movies so I figured he was there in the final fight.
My favorite things from this movie were Gilgamesh & Athena , Makkari & Druig (these two had really great chemistry together and I was hoping to see more scenes with them together), Phastos and his family and the 2nd post credit scene.I definitely think this would have functioned much better as a miniseries but we'll just have to see what comes after this. I hope Marvel takes some of these new technical skills that they are utilizing from some of their recent movies in their later works because while the writing wasn't that great for this movie the cinematography was beautiful in certain scenes, imo. (Side note: I also hope that they took notes from Shangchi's fight scene coordinators & Jackie Chan's former stunt team because how they captured and choreographed the fight sides for that movie, is how the rest of the marvel movies need to be lol).
I absolutely loved this movie and all the characters but god should it have been a Disney+ show. So many amazing moments had to be speedrun through (especially the twist) which I feel didn't let us have time to really sit with them.
The warrior’s madness like illness that Thena had quickly become non existing after the death of gil. Also plot hole if Iki killed Ajak the way he did then got the body, wouldn’t he have to fight the regular and souped up deviants? If he could handle them all on his own why didn’t he just kill them? He didn’t seem to be injured in the flash back. If he killed the deviant Gil would still be alive
I agree with some of your points. Every person I know who saw it thought it'd be a better series, but that the visuals definitely needed to be on a cinema screen.
This really felt more like the marvel comics unlike other mcu films the eternals are supposed to deal with God's and Celestials and that doesn't fit into the mcu and yes ikaris is superman ripoff and it's obvious in the comics and it's always a joke also everything I this movie does connect with the wider mcu I think this is the most important marvel movie going forward based on how much it sets up and connects
I feel like if this movies plot was just reuniting the group and figuring out what happened to their leader with none of the end of world stuff or fighting stuff it would of been a better movie
It would've been much more interesting to have one of the eternals (probably Druig) decide they're sick of watching humanity tear each other apart, especially in the aftermath of the snap reversal which would've caused intense resource shortages and conflicts. Druig then decides he's going to take over humanity to fix them, the other eternals have to decide whether they're more loyal to humanity or each other. Someone comes to the realisation they've actually got more in common with humanity than any of them thought, Druig ends up in celestial prison, tiamut is teased in a post-credits sequence.
i feel like the whole "emergence" thing should have been a way bigger deal than it was, that should have been the first new "team up" movie for Phase 4. Like the director set the stakes too high to be able to have fit all she wanted to do in one movie. I would have made the "big bad" for this movie the now sentient deviants and really gave the team more time to develop their characters and their relationships.
My thoughts through this movie: The start: someone was binging Star Wars before they made this. The first lines of dialog: "Beautiful, isn't it?" "Hi, i'M IkArUs" It's going to be one of those Sprite: Until the last couple of centuries of human history, she would have been considered a full adult. I get being annoyed by the sudden kid's table benching, but this whole millennia of misery thing was weird. Finding Arakis's body: Marvel does horror, let's go! (Was disappointed) Ikarus betrayal and the Deviants: cool ideas, poor execution After Plan A was foiled: killing it is now their only option, good job, buddy. This is your fault now. Fly into the sun: I was rooting for it, but when it actually happened? Both disappointed and amused "I'd follow you anywhere, boss": At what point did this man ever lead anything? He's a born follower with barely an ounce of individual thought Non-interference policy: Why? If you want a large, advanced population for your seed buddy to crush, why not stop them killing each other? Why not give them advanced technology and teach them how it works so they can make more? Hephaestus and his family: everything about those scenes were adorable and Ik even had an inkling of personality Overall: big, beautiful, ambitious, but ultimately forgettable but for how baffling some of the choices were
Will someone explain to me that random suicide at the end? Also, I like the characters but the story was lacking and spent a lot of time in things that didn’t really matter. Like their was maybe two lines of build up for that
Wait, how am I supposed to believe that giant, purple Thanos has a brother who looks like normal Harry Styles? I need a legit Punnett square diagram or some backstory about how Thanos became giant and purple before I can swallow that concept.
I had a lot of problems with Eternals, but there was enough good things in there for me to say I liked it. I'd say a 6/10. I liked a lot of the concepts and that the story went in interesting directions, but the execution could have been much better. I did feel mixed on the characters however. I really connected with some of them (Thena, Makkari, Druig, Phastos), while others left me feeling quite detached (Ikaris and Sersi's relationship did nothing for me). I think they needed to make this a Disney+ show to give the story the time it needed to be fully fleshed out. There's a lot of things here that could've been improved if they had been given room to breathe. With the proper amount of time and development, this story could have been much more powerful.
Ikaris and Sersi's relationship was so damn rushed. He tels her "i'll be yours if you'll have me", the kiss, have sex and then "I love you" and next scene is them marrying.
as much as i agree with a lot of the criticism, including amanda's, lets be real the main reason this got such an uproar and held to this lofty standard is because of all the representation. we always get higher expectations. of course the big director has an impact too, but i walked away really happy and impressed with all the new things mcu has been trying out lately, even if it was 100% too much for one film, which i feel like they only do when they arent sure about the audiences want for another-- which is also why i think Angelina was so under used because that way if she doesn't want to continue or if they didn't want to there was no expectations-- but i liked it. i totally got the pre-synder justice league feel too, but like in a good way. that scene on the beach had me at the edge of my seat. i was also really impressed with the look of the movie in general, and by the end i was really attached to the cast we had left. i just think people need to remember, as much as this is directed like some poetic cinema, its marvel. they will probably in the future be put more in comedic and realistic situations.
I had a lot of fun with eternals, my favorite of the marvel films this year. There were pacing problems, I feel like they shoulda cut Kit Harrington cause he didn’t need to be there and he just took up screen time. There were enough characters without him. Also didn’t need the sentient deviant, it didn’t do much and took up screen time.
I watched it last night at the movies and good lord I couldn’t wait for it to be over! It’s so slow paced, all over the place, nothing really makes sense and it bored me to death??!
Gemma Chan was the best part of Crazy Rich Asians for a lot of people. Endearing, powerful, kind. Her introduction was intriguing and her last scene with her husband was so AMAZING. True boss moment. I don't understand how I didn't fall head over heels for Sersi, especially since I went into the movie adoring Gemma
It was kind of hilarious that everyone was like, "Ikaris is the leader because he's the strongest" when there's a guy who can literally CONTROL MINDS
Literally
right! didnt they mention he was able to mind control angelina jolie's character to sleep
*Eternals 2: Eternalier* (with more Angelina)
A little bit more Angelina makes everything alright.
Maybe she would even have dialogue the next time around. Honestly. What were they thinking?

The second I realized that Ikaris was about to fly into the sun I doubled over silently wheezing in the theater because that's the worst planting and payoff I've ever seen
It was just so unnecessarily dramatic 🙄
They did the character dirty.
Read the comics bro doesn't catch a break for centuries tbh lmfao
The only way I can think to save it is if unlike Icarus, Ikaris went to the sun to somehow get more power and return stronger. I still don't buy Marvel (or many other comic or non comic book-rekated deaths) at this point
no cause same
Honeslty it should've been a miniseries. We could've focused on the characters more and expanded on the history.
Yeah.
Im just imagining him on the toilet and then all of a sudden he's floating into the ceiling like "what is happening."
omg i forgot he wasn't even in the final fight.
WOW
Yes, also Kingo just wasn't in the final fight? Like he just left and they were all okay with that?
It's also the more important fight, like okay kill them but then your kind dies too sooooo...
Me too
Once it showed back up at the end I was genuinely confused as to what side it was on and what the motivation was. I think the writers also didn’t know
Yeah it seemed like they'd gained the intelligence to be like, wait, I don't want this planet that I am on to blow up!
But no his purpose was to keep Athena out of the fight.

They always do in every movie my God they work so hard
Its always the special fx that carries these movies. They're not recognized enough
Very true.
Gotta agree with that- the visuals were incredibly beautiful to watch on the big screen.
You can say that to every Marvel movie out there (except for Black Panther cuz there were some bad CGI moments)
Druig and Makkari had so much more chemistry in the tiny amount of scenes they had together than the main couple. I hope they give them more room to grow in the next movie(s) :)
They had chemistry because she was deaf, and didn’t have to say any lines written by kaz and Ryan firpo
@@ad-sd-vids5332 u sound ableist, she had lines
I had the exact same thought. I didn't care about Sersi and Ikaris, but when I saw those two on screen I was so engaged and I loved the chemistry and tension they had
Wasn't it the point tho? Ikaris and Sersi broke up, they are in a bad place in their relationship.

Ikaris flying into the sun literally had me crying laughing, it was genuinely the funniest death scene ive ever witnessed.

They probably thought it was so deep too
Honestly, this movie should've been a disney plus show with the setup being Sersi, Sprite and Ikaris going on a journey to get the band back together, with each episode focusing on 1 of the characters back story and what they were doing for 7000 years, with occasional encounters with Kro the deviant.
I was waiting for this comment!! But Disney got greedy and wanted a possible Oscar nom w/ a superhero movie.
Now, that would have been amazing
THIS IS LITERALLY WHAT I WAS SAYING TO MY FRIEND AFTER WE CAME OUT OF THE THEATRE it would have been so much better

He’s one of the only reasons my brother and I went to see this. Well.... him, Angelina, GoT guys, and our girl from the walking dead.
It's funny that the ship that got four minutes ended up having more chemistry and being more huge and beloved by the fandom than the main ship.
When I first read this , I thought that you literally meant a ship and not a relationship.

@@Pantheragem Director Lucrecia Martel about Black Widow: “What they told me was ‘we need a female director because we need someone who is mostly concerned with the development of Scarlett Johansson’s character.' They also told me ‘Don’t worry about the action scenes, we will take care of that.’ I was thinking, well I would love to meet Scarlett Johansson but also I would love to make the action sequences.”
Easy to boss around.... but this one, tbf, showed more director influence (even if it responded with double the MCU tricks...)

If marvel truly had a formula how come eternal feels very different compared to shang chi or black widow most of the time the directors get to do what they wanted marvel only interferes with the easter eggs and references and setups to the mcu
Makkari was my fav. I loved her and wanted more of her. I also loved the dynamic of Thena and Gilgamesh. I needed more of both of these things.
Ikarus yeeting himself in the sun was just, expected. Like that's his name, that's his thing!!! But yeah, miniseries would've been better maybe.
Saying “that’s his thing” about Ikarus throwing himself into the sun is the funniest shit
In the comics it was his son's name...
We had a few flashbacks (like… 3 or 4 maybe) and they cut back to present day world ending scenario…
I would have much preferred to follow a story of them living through the ages, battling monsters, each other and themselves as they come to terms with a) being immortal b) not being human c) wanting to be human - I just think there would have been much more potential for inter-character drama and conflict and tension 🤷🏻♀️ I enjoyed it.
“Her mind isn’t straight…”
Neither is mine.
They never had it? Ikaris literally murdered Ajak in a jealous fit.
@@caiolucas8257 It was not a jealous fit, did you watch the movie?
I think it would have worked better as a short TV series bc it felt at times really rushed, but overall I didn’t hate it
I honestly loved Ikaris and watching his inner conflict and how it shaped him, I bawled my eyes out when he died but that may have been because I was on my period lol
but Eternals ISN'T that singular nor unique. The humor felt mostly FORCED which is common in CBMs; the action was mostly GENERIC; no stakes of any kind; name ONE thing interesting about Thena!
And Zhao used thousands of CBM CLICHES that she didn't need to!
Same, but the night scenes are hard to watch. I don't know why Choe Zhao chose those set pieces.
when ikaris flew into the sun me and my friend couldn’t help but burst out laughing. he turned to me and said “they didn’t even get the icarus analogy right, he flew TOO close to the sun, not into it”💀

@@beesknees5628 Nah they were the most boring relationship in the entire movie lmao, I would have loved more with Druig/Makkari and Gilgamesh/Thena
That was realistic. If they were around that long,at least one of them would think we suck.
I laughed my ass off when Jon Snow said, “I have complicated family history”. I out load in the theater said, “yeah, no shit”.

My main problem with the movie is that it’s literally full of 7,000 year old characters and yet there’s absolutely no sense of time passing. It should have felt like Boyhood but on an insane level
Sersi and Ikarus had a "meh" relationship. Gilgamesh and Thena had better chemistry
Druig and Makkari also had much better chemistry
I was told this movie was a romance before going in. I spent the whole movie horrified that Sersi and Ikarus would get togethor in the end.
I honestly feel like Eternals would've worked better as a series where they had more time to flesh everything out. Hell even more movies or making it in parts would've worked better, and I think I would've enjoyed the movie more if that was the case. The movie isn't bad nor is it amazing, but I don't think I'd watch it again due to the issues it has
I agree a mini series would have been pretty cool
Basically Eternals should have done what Marvel already did with the Avengers and they knew works well
Instead they tried to do what DC did with the Justice League, and it went about the same way
@@altromonte15 Eh not exactly.
I laughed my ass off when Ikaris literally flew into the sun! My friends looked at me and they were so confused, but I couldn’t stop myself….
I hadn’t seen the movie yet, but I’m curious: do they ACTUALLY show him going into the Sun or is it just inferred? Because the Sun is like 93 million miles away.
@@TalentCaldwell he just flies into the sun. He was just consumed by the gas and flames

Fortunately, she has contracts for multiple films.
I really hope marvel hires you cuz I'd love that
Like, I'm sure Ikaris will be back.
And every time I was like "Sersi the museum curator would never be okay with this"
Why would it be BCE and CE

What does Blade have to do with Null's sword?
That was supposed to be Blade?
@@robando2922 I don’t know. All I know is that was Mahershala Ali, who is playing Blade. Maybe we’ll find out soon
@@vanzy01 Yup. The voice was Mahershala Ali, who is playing Blade in the MCU
that was not obvious at all that that was Blade unless you looked up the credits or knew a lot about comic books.. like i'm a pretty dedicated MCU viewer and thought it was Fury because I couldn't place the voice
I went to see it in theatres and while I enjoyed it, you are absolutely right that it would've been better as a series rather than a movie
Oh, and angelina jolie deserved more screen time, her character was beautiful!
I thought it was messy, but respect the ambition.
I mean, the tension isn't really meant to be "will a Celestial destroy the Earth?" The tension is "how are they going to stop it/what is it going to cost them?" and the moral/emotional conflict
oh my god thanks for pointing out pip's disastrous CGI, for some reason i haven't seen any reviewer talk abt it but all i could think in the theater was that a video game character just got transported into the MCU like it was fucking ready player one lmao
really weird how Druig and Makkari have like 10000% more chemistry in 2 flirting scenes than Cersi and Ikarus in the whole movie.
My complaint was also around the evolved deviant his motives aligned with the eternals and makes no sense that he evolves just to be killed.
100% on the more Angelina. It wasn't just that she was amazing (as always) in an action role. Her performance was so nuanced. She did such an amazing job showing all the internal conflict she goes through having to deal with the memory loss and the prospect of losing herself. She needs her own movie.
It’s a messy goodness but needed more Angelina, probably should’ve been a longer film or a series.
It should've been a series tbh, there's many new characters and I'm sad that some of them barely have a development throughout the entire movie. Guardians of The Galaxy works as a film because they're only 5 members and they're not too hard to be introduced
@@800Ms-k6n also there's too funny Drax cute Rocket and Groots.

I will defend until my dead the celestial waking up part, that part had scale and looked magnificent
(Spoiler alert obv) Throughout the movie my friend and I kept making jokes about how toxic Icarus is (I was ofc biased for Kit Harrington) so when he threw himself into the sun we DIED laughing, you could hear our muffled squeaks throughout the theater
When that happened my friend and I lost it
Same me and my sister were dying 💀
Same! Watched it yesterday with a group of friends and we died laughing
I liked his character and was also sad he killed himself
I literally screamed “this lil tinker bell bitch” at the screen. I wouldn’t have helped her after she tried to KILL ME . Like what😭
"Get the gang back together" It's the first movie!
To be honest, the badness of this movie is very well hidden in the incredible cast and crew's talent and make you not realize how mediocre the writing was
"I was getting more of a Whedon Justice League vibe instead of Man of Steel."
_damn_
Idk if it’s your typing kinda thing to review here, but I’m curious if you’ll be watching Arcane? I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
(Side note: I also hope that they took notes from Shangchi's fight scene coordinators & Jackie Chan's former stunt team because how they captured and choreographed the fight sides for that movie, is how the rest of the marvel movies need to be lol).
as always, amanda’s reviews are so smart and witty and eloquent 😌 I don’t even watch most of the movies she reviews, I just love listening to her mind
Guess this is the closest thing I'm gonna find to an online reviewer showing this movie some mercy.

I was wondering if I should make a point of seeing it this Sunday but then I saw you uploaded, so I'd rather stay in and hear it from you.
i feel like the whole "emergence" thing should have been a way bigger deal than it was, that should have been the first new "team up" movie for Phase 4. Like the director set the stakes too high to be able to have fit all she wanted to do in one movie. I would have made the "big bad" for this movie the now sentient deviants and really gave the team more time to develop their characters and their relationships.
I have finally seen it, and I really really enjoyed this. I've never even seen Zhao's Nomadland before.
My thoughts through this movie:
The start: someone was binging Star Wars before they made this.
The first lines of dialog:
"Beautiful, isn't it?"
"Hi, i'M IkArUs"
It's going to be one of those
Sprite: Until the last couple of centuries of human history, she would have been considered a full adult. I get being annoyed by the sudden kid's table benching, but this whole millennia of misery thing was weird.
Finding Arakis's body: Marvel does horror, let's go! (Was disappointed)
Ikarus betrayal and the Deviants: cool ideas, poor execution
After Plan A was foiled: killing it is now their only option, good job, buddy. This is your fault now.
Fly into the sun: I was rooting for it, but when it actually happened? Both disappointed and amused
"I'd follow you anywhere, boss": At what point did this man ever lead anything? He's a born follower with barely an ounce of individual thought
Non-interference policy: Why? If you want a large, advanced population for your seed buddy to crush, why not stop them killing each other? Why not give them advanced technology and teach them how it works so they can make more?
Hephaestus and his family: everything about those scenes were adorable and Ik even had an inkling of personality
Overall: big, beautiful, ambitious, but ultimately forgettable but for how baffling some of the choices were
Will someone explain to me that random suicide at the end? Also, I like the characters but the story was lacking and spent a lot of time in things that didn’t really matter. Like their was maybe two lines of build up for that
My guess is because [name redacted] said that the mission was was their purpose in life, having it failed means they had no purpose anymore.
@@KiraHayabusa He could have tried to find other eternals to help with their respective planets?
But seriously Thena’s one-liner “But I wanted to” was a MOMENT.
I completely agree with you

Gemma Chan was the best part of Crazy Rich Asians for a lot of people. Endearing, powerful, kind. Her introduction was intriguing and her last scene with her husband was so AMAZING. True boss moment. I don't understand how I didn't fall head over heels for Sersi, especially since I went into the movie adoring Gemma
It would have been a good Disney+ show, probably!
