      Most good fanfiction actually works within the fandom it was written for, so attempting to make it into an actual book means making a lot of copyright holders okay with a lot of things very quickly.
      What we have here is a fanfiction so far removed from it’s initial story that all you need is a name swap and no one is the wiser. I will admit I’m also just not a fan of any Modern AU fanfics anyways so this take is a little biased.

    • @oranges7706
      @oranges7706 2 роки тому +1

      @@PineappleLiar I agree, some of the best fanfics I've read have been deeply rooted in the work. It's also worth considering that, by their nature, most fanfictions, even modern AUs, assume you have some knowledge of the characters, their relationships, and their pasts beforehand, so there might be difficulty getting people not in the fandom to relate the character(s), even if names are changed and stuff

    My first boyfriend was super jealous and had a temper like this (fortunately he never directed it at me). Literally every time I met someone from his life they told me “he’s so much better since he met you. You’re so good for him.” I was only 19, but smart enough to recognize that as a red flag. I told him “you need to be better for yourself, not me. Someday the infatuation with me will wear off and I won’t be a good enough reason anymore. I refuse to be responsible for your character.” I thought he took it well until I heard that he had a mental breakdown and tried to BURN DOWN HIS DORM BUILDING. He was tried for arson but the court declared him mentally incompetent and ordered him to be hospitalized instead. I’m so glad I listened to my gut and got out of that relationship when I did. I feel really bad for writers who put their heart and soul into something they loved and have it mocked because of a stereotype. There's countless stories of relationships dealing with abuse -- parental abuse and neglect -- and characters finding themselves after the whole process, and honestly, when i was a teenager, it made me feel less alone. People only write to propagate a message or escape their reality. I would rather focus on why girls this young are romantising such abusive relationships, instead of mocking them. Speaks volumes of how their actual lives must be. 😕

    8:38 This guy clearly doesn't know anything about Mr. Darcy and his personality. Looks like he didn't even read the book, because P&P it's not about "Falling in love for an asshole".
    [SPOILER ALERT FROM P&P]
    Darcy is a good man, he makes mistakes, but he learns from it and overcomes his pride. He NEVER manipulated Lizzy or forced her into doing something she didn't wanted to do. Actually, he helps her A LOT.
    Elizabeth is smart and she's a decent woman. But she has her prejudices towards Darcy. She doesn't want to marry for convenience, she wants to marry for love, a healthy and beautiful love.
    Pride and Prejudice is a story about love, human behaviour and personal growth. Both Elizabeth and Darcy are not perfect, but they overcome their prejudices and pride and they showed how decent and good persons they are. It's a great story wich, I think, has a beautiful idea of love, not like After wich portrays a terrible and toxic idea of it.

      My take is a bit more friendly - that it's fine to write RPF if everyone being written about consents to the fic type that is being written. If everyone is into it, then hey - power to them and hope they have fun. And in fact, I did talk to someone who wrote for a very niche fandom where a group of people actually did give permission for wholesome smut fics (they did not consent to abusive trash, naturally, and wanted to read stuff before it went out). Didn't think it'd actually happen, but cool for them. But that's like crazy rare - almost always, it's done without permission or consent of any kind, and that's where the creepy line is crossed and I feel bad for the people involved.

It kinda feels like you’re dehumanising the people in the ship and twisting their real life personalities to what YOU want it to be. Edit: Looked up information and saw Anna Todd was 24 when she wrote this. College pairs freshmen with freshman roommates. Also, maybe I'm just being judgy but considering that she's been married since age 18, (thanks Wiki), I'm gonna say that her lack of experience reminds me of E.L James with the whole fantasy but not actually doing the research. Will that last comment come back to bite me since I'm writing some stories? YUP!
    2nd edit: When I say people who act like dumbasses, I'm meaning the idiots who interrupt your class by being loud, rude and cursing out the professor and they don't want to be there. I'm not talking about people who are freshmen and finding themselves, I don't fucking care what you do. As long as you don't harm another person. That's definitely not something that can be generalized. Maybe in your college everyone was level-headed, and that's great, but the majority of college kids I know only cared about passing during finals month. The majority of the semester, partying, romance and expanding your horizon with all sorts of new experiences was the focus.
      Which...honestly, I see no problem with? It's your first time away from home, where you get to make your own life decisions, where you get to try "adult" stuff like drinking and whatnot. Get it out of your system, get to know yourself and your preferences and limits. That's also part of growing up, and it's in a place that is still a kind of protected environment compared to being a full-time working adult where any mistake can ruin your entire existence.

    I definitely read this fan fic as it was coming out. I remember waiting excitedly for chapters to be released. I thought it was so thrilling at the time and loved the "bad boyness" of the story and tessa changing him. I went to go back and re read it before this first movie came out and noticed all the things you talked about. I couldn't believe that I didn't see this all when I read it the first time but I was young. I'm so happy that I have grown and can now see how toxic a lot of the traits in this book are. Thankfully I didn't go through my time growing up idolizing a relationship like this that I remember a lot of people doing as I read the comments on Wattpad when I first read it

    You know, we always go over these fanfics and works individually. But has anyone gone over why dysfunctional and abusive relationships are what we raise so high in literature? And it's starts young, you see all these poorly written fics by 13 year old girls. And it dates back in time. Phantom of the Opera, a beloved classic, is just Stockholm syndrome. So why is this a thing? Sure the patriarchy. But why specifically is women's media, starting at a young age, obsessed with abusive relationships?

    • @aetheriansunrise5433
      @aetheriansunrise5433 3 роки тому +17

      I can agree with you on some extents, but the Phantom of the Opera is not an example of Stockholm syndrome. If it was, Christine wouldn't have left him to die and hooked up with her true, healthy love Raoul! The book at least condemned the Phantom for being someone who had a hard past and should be pitied, yes, but he was also an old, ugly, murderer who shouldn't be romanticized. You could blame the musical for making him "prettier" with only half of the messed up face, but the story didn't romanticize him: the fangirls did. And how is this the fault of the patriarchy when the biggest examples of modern media that feature abusive romantic relationships (Twilight, 50 Shades, Hush Hush, After) are women? What's the conspiracy that men are trying to brainwash young girls into being subservient through the media they consume?

    • @JustYourAverageGirl2002
      @JustYourAverageGirl2002 3 роки тому +7

      @@aetheriansunrise5433 I probably should have phrased it better; the patriarchy I've heard been used to explain this problem in passing conversation. I'm saying I want to know more than that. What is the connecting thread that ties of these together? Why do people focus on this? Why is this idealized? Everyone talks about the individual problems of these films and books, but I've yet to see a video do a deep dive into the heart of the matter and I'm genuinely curious why this is a repeated theme throughout history. Perhaps The Shiek would be a better example for Stockholm Syndrome in the truest sense, though I still argue Phantom of the Opera is Stockholm light lol.
      Seriously though, is no one else curious about this?

    • @aetheriansunrise5433
      @aetheriansunrise5433 3 роки тому +12

      @@JustYourAverageGirl2002 You're right, the issue deserves far more insight than a hand wave and the blaming of "the patriarchy." Personally, I think its just a fantasy gone too far. Having a rich, hot boyfriend is a very common fantasy. Having a man who cares only for you and nothing except you can be appealing as a concept, but its usually taken to an extreme that is a very unhealthy examples as to what a proper relationship should be. But the threat of physical abuse, the dubious lack of consent, the constant victim blaming and gaslighting? Maybe kinks, maybe inexperience. I don't like to believe they were written with ill intent, set to poison the minds of our youth. What I wonder is why the target audience responds so positively to these works, because that's what feeding the feedback loop: Author writes romance with hot, abusive romantic lead, audience laps it up, others see the demand in the marker, more hot, abusive, male leads appear. It's a seemingly endless cycle.

    The male seducer is challenged in some capacity, to make the pure girl fall for them. And show evidence
    This has often come down to the stained sheets. Though I think it started off as just written proof. The seducer always falls for the seducee and is eventually forgiven regardless of being a horrible person before hand.

I grew up thinking the bad boy thing was hot, that the manipulative and abusive jerk was just misunderstood and incredibly sexy. Let me tell you kids, it took YEARS and lots of assholes to make me realize that these type of men aren’t men. Now that I have a daughter I’m horrified we’re still living in a world where this shit is hyped up and consent is still a grey area and abuse is only abuse if it leaves marks.
