I visited the area in 2011 and went to all except 5 and 8. I found bison in Custer State Park, but they did not lick my car. Between the Minuteman Missile Site and the NE entrance to the Badlands is the Prairie Homestead, which preserves a homestead from the early 1900s. I also went to the South Dakota Air and Space Museum, just outside of the Ellsworth Air Force Base north of Box Elder.
I can't believe you were disappointed with Mt. Rushmore! I was there for the first time 5 years ago, and when I got to the edge and looked up, I was overwhelmed by the hugeness and closeness of it! It brought me to tears. We're coming back again this year, and doing some new attractions (inc Devil's Tower), but our first stop is Mt. Rushmore. 😀🇺🇸
@@JamesandLaurent Thanks! We did Crazy Horse last time, and took the bus up to the monument. Yes...it is HUGE and impressive! But since it wasn't "face-to-faces" like Rushmore I didn't feel overwhelmed like I did there. Rushmore is just so majestic and beautiful, especially since it is four very important presidents. It was a very exciting and a proud patriotic moment. Can't wait to be there again in 2 months! 🙂
I never thought of South Dakota as a destination spot until I saw this video, looks like an amazing location to hike and spend time in nature. Thanks for sharing.
We were blown away the first time we went there, especially by the variety of what there is to see. We went for a 3-day weekend and it wasn't nearly enough to see even half of what is on our list. That's why we went back a second time and this time allocated enough time to do it right.
I wish I had a genie, who could let me ride on a magic carpet to Deadwood, for a meal in the Gem Steakhouse (and I'd like to sleep with Al Swearengen, too!)....I love walking, but I'm not very confident with rambling in steep, hilly areas; so maybe it's not the region for me?
Ooo, we loved this video! We didn't know anything at all about these places and now we would love to go there! Devil's Tower looks amazing, and the timelapse you made there is so cool! Badlands looks beautiful even if the weather wasn't great. Sweet tooth Marion would love to eat those donuts and fudge. As we are huge vintage lovers Delta base looks amazing! The interior is wowowow! The architecture in Deadwood is so beautiful! Hahaha we love the selfie pics series in front of Mount Rushmore. Iron Mountain Scenic Road drone shots are stunning! We love your comments on what you are showing in the video. Brilliant!
Ah here's your Black hills videos. I'm going to be spending about 10 days up there. But going to new places. I'm so glad you guys enjoyed your stay there.
you two are hilarious..I dig your sense of humor and I like the back and forth banter - it's very entertaining and informational.. keep it up an thanks for the tips.

Betty here....As a child, I visited most of these sites with my parents in the 1960's. I vividly remember the pigtail bridges and Dad driving our manual transmission truck/camper in those mountains! This video was a pleasant journey down memory lane. Thanks for sharing!
Dear Betty, We're sure that if we had seen the pigtail bridges at a young age, we would still remember them as well. We hope you get a chance to go back to that part of the country some day.
Thank-you! You guys did a fantastic job with your video. I'm heading to Rapid City next week to see as much as possible in a 3-night trip. Your video certainly helped me tweak my sight-seeing itinerary. Again, thank-you so much!
Went to Rapid City for the first time in June of 2021. I loved it so much I had to come home and convince my wife that her and the kids would enjoy it too. So we're all going in June of 2022!
Thanks for an excellent video. I had never heard of the Black Hills, until I moved to Denver metro ,and a co-worker told me about it. Lots to do and see in addition to Mt Rushmore. I got a thick catalog in the mail just focused on things to do and see in the Black Hills region. I was impressed with Mt Rushmore, we were able to get pretty close, they had just renovated the area with entry way of flags from countries all over the world, very impressive. Mt Rushmore is definitely worth seeing. Crazy Horse is impressive, too.
The Black Hills have a lot to offer beyond Mt Rushmore. We hope you get a chance to visit the Badlands and Custer State Park, as well as the other items on our list since you live so close.

Those bison are so intimidating when they get that close. So funny that they liked licking your vehicle. Haven't experienced that before. Wow, a 2 hour drive....day trip. The badlands are so interesting. Ha, Walldrug sells so many things. Deadwood cometary would be interesting to wander about for a bit. Oh, we love Mt. Rushmore. The girls enjoyed the teepee and nature trails. I can see that it is a small park compared to expectations. The sculptures are incredible though. Such a scenic drive. So pretty to drive. Maybe not a great idea in a camper though. Oh yeah, crazy horse is fun too.
Hey guys! Was researching Mt. Rushmore and your video popped up.. Great info! We are going next month but only for the weekend.. Seems like we should have planned a longer trip.. Lots of things to see and do! Thanks for info!
That town of Wall looks awesome to stroll around and check out the history. Wall Drug is where it's at haha. I always picture the nuclear testing in the Pacific, Utah, Nevada but never South Dakota. So neat. -c/t
Good to see that the two things you liked the most in our Top 10 list are the two things for which we also published a stand-alone video. Great minds think alike :)
For the national parks, there is an annual pass that might be more advantageous if you are going to do several of them. For the state parks, you'll have to check their website. Sorry.
I liked pretty much the concept of the ten things to do... I am editing right now some videos that I will publish in the future following the same idea. Well done guys! I enjoyed it pretty much!!! And, by the way... those buffalos were so funny licking all your car... oh my!! I must admit I would have been pretty afraid of having them that close... I did not understand in which period you went there ... some videos seem shot in a period and some others in winter time as there is the snow... am I wrong? Did you go there several times and shot more videos? How nice to see the museum of the pharmacy. Did you enjoy it? What there's inside? I would have spent the whole day there most probably :D The mountain with the four presidents is on my wish list since a while... what a pity you got disappointed by it...
Wall drug is worthless...what a joke place.. Hype and more hype for high prices and mediocre food. Forget it for more than a quick lunch...go enjoy nature.
@AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL FOREVER! Literally 529 more miles to Sylvan Lake where the wife and I vacation every year. We found Wall Drugs and Deadwood to be touristy and a letdown. Worth a stop, but just a tourist feel. But each and every year we go to Rushmore and walk to the base of the memorial where we stand and think about the beauty of this country and our amazing fortune at being born and living our 28 years of marriage in this great country. (28 years today!!! It's our yearly anniversary trip). Anyway...I just laughed at your liberal comment and wanted to wish you best regards. I'm guessing (hoping) the authors Just wanted to point out other things to do in SD, and really don't mean to dissuade people from the monument.
We normally don't include temporary events, such as festivals, sporting events, etc. Sturgis feels like there is one week of the year that clearly dwarfs the other 51 weeks.
@@JamesandLaurent So the town is not scenic or worth visiting? I have been to Daytona Beach when it was bike week and not. I hated bike week, but like Daytona OK the rest of the year.
Great Video! We are flying into Denver and spending 11 days in South Dakota/Wyoming. How would you two suggest spending those days? Travelling via SUV. We were planning on driving up to South Dakota and spending 3 days there then spending the final week in Yellowstone.
Our answer is: It depends what you are into. Believe it or not, we have never been to Yellowstone and therefore have no opinion on whether one week in Yellowstone is a lot or not. But 3 days in South Dakota feels incredibly rushed. 4 or 5 days sounds a lot more reasonable, the reason being that there is a lot of variety in South Dakota (landscapes, wildlife, history, museums, gambling), while Yellowstone is purely about landscapes and wildlife. Hence the question about what you're into. If you only want to do 5 or 6 of our Top 10, then 3 days is still rushed but feasible. If more than 5 or 6 are interesting to you, then 3 days is way too short.
I have seen several South Dakota and Black Hills videos recently. One of my favorite places to visit. Of the videos I have watched, yours was, by far, the most informative and interesting. Thank you.
Thanks so much. Comments like yours mean a lot to us. As you might expect, a lot of work goes into making these videos and we're glad that people appreciate them.
I'm driving from Illinois to Glacier National Park and was thinking of stopping in this area for a night, being close to the halfway point on a 24 hr drive. After watching this video I think I may need to take a few days or maybe a whole different trip to explore the area. Great video guys!
We have never been to Glacier National Park and can't weigh in on whether you should spend more days there or not. But there is definitely enough to keep you busy around Rapid City for 3 or 4 days.
I was there over Thanksgiving and it was way more beautiful in person, definitely go if you have the chance! Take a look at some photography I took while on the road!: @t
Thank you for such an informative video. My husband and I are going next week to Rapid City. We will spend Saturday, Sunday. Monday and half a day Tuesday in the area. Which day would you suggest be better to visit Mt Rushmore to avoid the crowds?
You should base your visit of Mt Rushmore on the weather forecast more than anything else. As long as you get there early in the morning, you should be fine. It's not one of these sites where small crowd vs. big crowd makes a huge difference to your experience.
You absolutely should. Deadwood is a lot of fun and not too far from you. If you want to learn more about Deadwood, another channe called Colorado Martini has several videos on Deadwood alone.
We had enough footage about Wall Drug that we will soon release a stand-alone video about Wall Drug alone. We might do one about Deadwood as well. But regardless, yes, they are great places to visit. You are right about Poker Alice, it sounds like she was bad ass :).
Thanks a lot. We really appreciate it. There is so much to do in the Black Hills that it makes it easier to do a Top 10 video like this one. We hope you enjoy your trip there.
Most of the national parks should be open, at least the roads and trails. The visitors Centers might be closed, which means you'll have to do a little bit more research on your own before going there. Deadwood is reopened too.
@@JamesandLaurent we went to MT Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Badlands. The magic towns like deadwood, Keystone, even the 1880 town were closed !!
Lost my hart in the Black Hills!!
Been there, walked the Volks march at Crazy Horse, and would visit the Hills every year...if i had the money 😉
We hope you get the chance to go back, even if it's not every year :).
I was there over Thanksgiving and it was way more beautiful in person, definitely go if you have the chance! Take a look at some photography I took while on the road!: @t
Sounds great!
When I think about Mt Rushmore I always think about the movie Richie Rich! HA. The free car wash. I'm sold.
If you're not too demanding on the quality, it's the best deal in town :)
Thank you! This was really helpful!!
You're so welcome! We hope you enjoy your trip. We were in Deadwood last week and it's getting busy again.
All three of the tunnels on Iron Mountain Road frame Mt Rushmore. ( in some cases it’s behind you ) Beautiful area, I’m heading back this spring!
We hope you enjoy your trip. It's one of our favorite parts of the country.
Did you guys make it to Wind Cave National Park? Curious if it was just underwhelming or not a stop on your trip. Loved the video and suggestions!
No, we did not. It was closed when we filmed this video. We don't remember why. But it was on our list of things to check out.
Very good! I lived six moths in south dakota 1983 .In the city of sherman.Really a beautiful place.Bruno from Natal, rn Brazil.
Thanks for watching our video. Yes, South Dakota has so many beautiful places :).
I’ve visited every one of your 10 places multiple times, I lived there in the mid 60’s and my sister and her family are there. Great video thanks!
So cool!
Disappointed with Mount Rushmore? Dorks!
It just didn't do it for us. But the area was beautiful.
@@JamesandLaurent OK I get it. But you need to understand that the badlands are nothing without Mount Rushmore.
haha nice car wash custer state park is cool. The devils tower reminds me of zuma rock
It was a fun experience.
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it. A lot of work went into it :).
Awesome video, gentlemen! I appreciate you making this so we can know what to do when visiting. Take care! 😃 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
I wen't to rapid city 1 almost 2 months ago
How did you like it?
@@JamesandLaurent it was good I love the nature around it too! I wanna go there again next year.
We hope you get the chance to :)
Don't bring your dogs to S Dak!!
We didn't :)
great job...going in 2 weeks!
Have fun!
i live in colorado and i have thought about the trip to deadwood on a week end just for fun. thank you i think i will take the trip
You absolutely should. Deadwood is a lot of fun and not too far from you. If you want to learn more about Deadwood, another channe called Colorado Martini has several videos on Deadwood alone.
I love the bison, weve been wanting to go to Mt. Rushmore!
Deadwood and Wall Drug are now added to my list. That remark about the prostitute taking Sundays off cracked me up!
We had enough footage about Wall Drug that we will soon release a stand-alone video about Wall Drug alone. We might do one about Deadwood as well. But regardless, yes, they are great places to visit. You are right about Poker Alice, it sounds like she was bad ass :).
The shot of the Wall Drug bumper sticker on the black Toyota was THE BEST!
It is the one shot in the whole video that required the most planning :)
2:53 Where’s Ten
???
Thanks for a little visit back home. I'm from Rapid but live in Hawaii now.
Welcome back!
You're so funny with the mouthwash and the carwash!!!
Haha. It was months and months of brainstorming to come up with that line 😉.
So happy to live here
As you should. It is a beautiful part of the country :).
The colors in the Badlands are best early morning or late afternoon - when the sun is low!
Thanks for the advice. Same thing at Grand Canyon :).
Hi Guys! Enjoyed this very doable trip....sometime when we can travel again.
You guys absolutely should. So much to see and so much variety that you would enjoy it.
This video was fantastic! I discovered it while looking for things to do near Mt. Rushmore. Definitely subscribing to you guys! So fun to watch!
Thanks a lot. We really appreciate it. There is so much to do in the Black Hills that it makes it easier to do a Top 10 video like this one. We hope you enjoy your trip there.
Is this a gay channel ?
This is a travel channel, although we started publishing Pomsky videos when we couldn't travel during the pandemic.
It's a miracle, this land: Dakota. I'd like you to visit
One of our favorite parts of the country.
Do you guys know if everything is closed now because of covid?
Most of the national parks should be open, at least the roads and trails. The visitors Centers might be closed, which means you'll have to do a little bit more research on your own before going there. Deadwood is reopened too.
I plan to go tomorrow.
We hope you enjoy your trip.
I really loved this trip... but I missed Devil´s Tower.
Haha :) This gives you a good reason to go back.
Great video guys! South Dakota was always on my bucket list of places to visit.
If you've never been, you absolutely should. The first time we went there, we were blown away by the variety of what there is to see.
I'm going here today and only have 6 hours what should I do?
Sorry, only saw your comment just now. Assuming you are coming from the East, Badlands and Wall Drugs or Wall Drugs and Custer State Park.
Thanks, guys! Looking forward to having similar experiences. Rally appreciate your videos.
Thanks a lot. It is one of our favorite parts of the country. Lots to see and, especially, lots of variety.
Very well done video👍🏼, I was in the black Hills last week and miss a lot of this places due the end season. I definitely want to back in summer time.
We hope you do. What were you able to see?
@@JamesandLaurent we went to MT Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Badlands. The magic towns like deadwood, Keystone, even the 1880 town were closed !! We drove back home through 385 Custer, very interesting scenery, I definitely want to come back in summer time. Thanks for the videos guys, very informative!!
We hope things get back to normal and you get the chance to see all the things you couldn't see. Please check out the Minuteman Missiles too.
Best video on South Dakota that I found! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
F U N!! Makes me want to go!
We hope you do. So much to see and so much variety. We've had a blast every time we've been.
@@JamesandLaurent thank you for all the tips!
We’re planning a trip here in August, we’re going to use this video as an itinerary! Thanks!
Glad we could help. We hope you enjoy your trip. It is such a beautiful part of the country with lots of things to do and lots of variety. We have two stand-alone videos on Wall Drug and on the Minuteman silo.
If you go in August and you are not a motorcyclist go after the Sturgis rally.
Just saying 😌
Thanks
You're very welcome :)
Thank you guys! Good tips on when to see Rushmore. I will be driving my family through there in a week on the way to Yellowstone. We are excited!
As you should be. It is a beautiful part of the country. We hope you left enough time in your schedule to do more than just Mt Rushmore :).
James and Laurent's World Travels Yes. We will probably stay in that area for a couple days and see Custer, badlands etc.
Poor kids they hella feel unwanted here lol
The Black Hills are the perfect place for a family road trip with kids of any age.
But how do people cope with the vast snow
We suspect they shovel it, like we do in the Midwest :).
So many footage and Information in just one video 😁👏
There is a lot to see in that part of South Dakota and it was hard to cramp everything in an 11-minute video :).
Thanks for this - very informative!
We hope you get a chance to visit some day. We were blown away by how much there was to see around Rapid City, and by the variety of things.
I'm dreaming... Thanks!
Thanks for the thanks. We have a new video being released today. We hope it will make you dream some more :).
Thanks guys excellent
Glad you enjoyed it
Good job on the video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the compliment. We appreciate it. As you can imagine, a lot of work goes into making a video like this one. We're glad you enjoyed it.
Cool! Have a great start of the week! 👍
Same to you. Thanks for stopping by :)
Great video!
Thanks. As you might expect, a lot of work went into this video. We're glad you enjoyed it 🤗🤗🤗.
Thank you gentlemen
You're very welcome :).
Great video!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
