This is by far the best video to get your Cytomic Glue working like a breeze. Beautiful

Thank you so much Streaky ! This is really a nice change that makes everything sound more beautiful and "professional". I learned a valuable point here ! Great Content ! you are the best pedagogue I've seen over here !
Another good tip is with a comp like the api2500 you can set your stereo linking/independence. 80% instead of 100% on mix bus is nice for a slightly wider image in my opinion.
I used to use the Waves SSL G-Buss compressor, but after trying out stuff from Plugin Alliance/Brainworx, it's hard to turn back. The bx_townhouse has become my go to master bus compressor at this point. The Vertigo VSC-2 if I want dual mono VCA/SSL style bus compression so L and R duck independently. Sidechain filtering on compressors should be default at this point going forward for any modern plugin, very helpful on things like the master bus or drum bus group.
I think you missed something important. Did you notice that after you applied the sidechain hp filter, the vocals were what makes the comp work unevenly? I think that you should've also dipped 1-2 db out of the 1.5k ish frequencies. You need eventually the kick and snare to trigger it evenly and not see too much compression affected from the vocals. In this case, an external sidechain would've been more useful.
I was thinking 200hz SCF is a bit high for my taste because when I compress a drum bus even a 30-60hz SCF can make a big difference in the triggering of the reduction and affect the balance between the kick & snare BUT this is awesome! You're spot on here, it's undeniable when you judge with your ears first, in a mix bus scenario bypassing the fundamentals of the kick and snare from triggering the reduction really gives that glued sound rather than a typical compression sound. Thank you!

what i noticed in cytomic is that the makeup gain adds more volume than the number that you select. Like listen to it and also look at the peak meter, if you add 1db it goes a lil bit above 1db
For me, the Glue from Cytomic is one of greatest VCA compressor emulations around next to native SSL or Townhouse from Brainworx, and last but not least Vertigo VSC2. Still haven't found anything close to the sound and action of these on the bus!
Hi Streaky, First of all, I want to thank you for all your excellent videos i love it, I learn a lot from them and One question, do you have any videos of the black box HG2? Thanks!!
Amazing content as usual! Perfect compression in a "mastering scenario" you should add to the title. BTW, I can't watch you holding an SM7B to blend in with the teenagers on UA-cam, just drop it 🤣 Thank you for your input, your are helping the audio community A LOT.
Always great tips and your courses are true gems But for the love of good a new song maybe something with some bite! Some times its hard for our un trained ears to hear what your referring too on such a soft track.
streaky can you please make a video about fletcher munson curves and ideal spl for listening volumes on speakers and headphones but especially headphones because i can’t figure out how can i measure it
@@ChrisBessy The waves g compressor? That's awful. You must mean another. Oh I would never use Pro C on master, I use it on tracks only. I guess we have different taste. But I do use Pro C a lot cause it's a very conventional compressor that behaves exactly as you expect.
@@teddym2808 Yes the SSL G-Master Compressor. I tried some mix and listen in my car, with all compressor I have. And often, I had bad sound with the Glue. More natural with SSL, and transparent with Pro C. I love use fabfilters vst on channels and on master bus. Yes we have all own style of musique, and different taste for sure :)
Great video, learn something new from you every time.. just one question: Why do you high pass at 200hz? My ssl bus compressors only go to 185hz hpf... thanks
Great videos ! Could you do a tutorial on ocean drive by duke Dumont ? How they got the kick and bass so punchy 80s vibe (I know they used the ssl compression ) 😁
I saw an interview with Bob Clearmountain on Rick Beato’s show recently and at one point they were talking about bus compression while mixing, and he said sometimes he went as high as -6 WHAT -6 He wasn’t Mastering. He was just mixing through it. But that’s still weird. I’m always about -2-3.5 Tops
Makes sense what you say with regards this internal sidechain, but I have tried Two pair of headphones I cannot realy say if there is much difference given by that type of compression
Any mix you’ve loved that went through the hardware SSL compression on the board, a 33609 etc. the sidechain method is not employed. This is a modern plug-in fad… NOT using the sidechain is actually what creates the classic glue, especially in rock music. This is not from my mind, but huge mixers who mix the music you actually hear. Streaky’s advice works, too but applies much more to mastering situations where subtlety is desired and where frequency dependent compression tools have been a staple for longer than 10-15 years. Embrace the movement caused by bus compression, if it’s pumping too wildly you probably have mixing issues (tubby kick etc) that the bus comp is actually illuminating for you 👍
Thank you for the trick. Note: as a Logic user like you I should say the new "mastering mystery tool" of Logic is far less agile on this subject sometimes, even it what we put inside is nicely balanced (not always, and as an Intel mac user I've only access to its "clean" setting) . Do you plan to do a video about this new tool?
For better explanation of the automatic release in VCA compressors and some corrections. - The automatic release is used when a song is arrhythmic, this meaning when a song doesn't follow a perfect quantized rhythm, this way you preserve a more natural movement in the song. - The high pass in the compressor doesn't complete evade low end, according to the manual the curve is a soft -6 dB/Oct. This means the compressor will still detect low end but in a much softer way. These types of compressors will ALWAYS detect low end since they are monoband. So, the example you are giving with the Pro-Q is really bad. Is not everything above 200hz. Also, if you are going to use HP in glue compressing, PLEASE make sure you really know how to control low end.
