Most motorcycle hand signals are fairly intuitive, especially when combined with appropriate body language; however, new riders may be confused upon first seeing them. When proper signaling is crucial to safety, like during large group rides or track days, important hand signals should be communicated during a pre-ride meeting.

DanDanTheFireman last week I couldn’t pass any practice test but this week I’m on a roll I think I’m gonna go ahead and get my permit before my msf class in May. Thanks for all the helpful videos
Riding for over twenty years and watching DDFM keeps me from becoming complacent and reminds me how fast accidents can happen. Also the free knowledge is priceless and I'll never be too experienced to learn something new. Thanks Dan
One for the harley guys. Pull over I found a smudge in the chrome?
Lmao
Road captain should have caught it pre-ride
Lol I ride a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 with a chrome tank…. Chrome exhaust… It’s a fingerprint magnet so I feel the pain….
But the following Harley support vehicle should have all cleaning and chrome restoration products in board should it not……? 😆
DDFM, I’ve been riding since 1992 and I really appreciate finding someone explaining all the things I learned over time and through MSF courses and track riding. You are saving lives for those riders without a mentor. I live in California and I see all the mistakes riders make when it comes to lane splitting, straight pipes, running brights at night and all the things that give motorists a reason to dislike motorcycles. I’d love to see you detail out the safe way to ride in California if that is possible or some other ways to be safe but courteous to motorists as we want them looking out for us, not angry at us.
PS. I was a Corpsman with the Marines and I always have a hard time not reacting immediately, even violently, to that right turn hand signal as it is the universal sign to stop in your tracks and go situationally aware as there is something happening ahead and to watch for the next hand signal in my other life. I tend to use a palm open instead for that reason.
Right hand up in the air will let others know your off power. You’ll see this usually when someone falls and people stop to help. You might yourself stopped in the middle of the road with no brake lights on. Raise your throttle hand.
I’m new at this the more I learn the better off I’ll be! Thank you for your videos! I’ll play them over again.
6:38 Double file: put up your left hand and put up both your index and middle finger. "Dont forget to include your index finger" LOL How did no one else catch this in comments? Idk why I laughed so hard
Lol. If you put the image in your heads, it's funny as hell. I would be confused if someone did this, thinking does he want to go single file or is he saying fuck you all I'm going home.. Lol.
You forgot the signal to tell another driver their number one LOL like your channel
I got learned the stop sign and the turn right sign, the other way around. When you have your fingers facing down with a ninety degree angle, you can replace the arm with a top-down view, and have a right corner. Also the fist facing up, is easier to see for people behind you, as you are pointing upwards, in stead of down.
Thank you, will definitely try these out in my Sunday ride!!
It was a pleasure to watch this video. Loud and clear thanks.
Great video thank you DDFM learned something new today 🏍😎👍
left arm out at 90 like a right turn, then move hand from back to front repeatedly and fast, means person following pass me. I been riding for a long time and didnt know some of these, always learning lol. great vid
Dan the man you're the man, thanks bro this really helped.. That view is Awesome great spot and that energy is on point..
Watch this video for more group riding tips! 5 tips for group riding: ua-cam.com/video/nJtV9JxZ3wY/v-deo.html
This is probably one of my favorite videos. I don't have a bike but will be buying one soon and I have plenty of friends who keep saying "can't wait to ride with you" this video was super helpful! I'll probably be pointing at my gas tank at some point and get a 'coool' nickname haha
We had to learn those before we could get our drivers license when I started driving. You had to know those signals to drive a car.
Thank you it's really helpful ❤️🙏
Good video. Hate to say I’ve not been on a group ride around the southern part of my state where hand signals or much organization is used. Some groups are great. Some groups are scary. Never had a pre-ride meeting - etc. I think I’ll watch this a few times. Might save it.
Grew up in a boating environment so a lot of these are different. For boating, left turn and right turn are the same. Stop is left arm bent 90 degrees with clenched fist facing sky. Cut engine is left index finger or left thumb drawn quickly across throat. Speed up engine is left thumb repeatedly raising towards sky. Slow down engine is left thumb repeatedly pointing at ground. For trailers, when doing pre-travel light check, left blinker working is left index finger pointing downwards at 45 degree angle. Right blinker working is right index finger pointing downwards at 45 degree angle. Brake lights are both arms raised towards sky at 90 degree angle with both hands clenched in fist.
Well thank you Mr. Dan!
Hi im from Philippines. This is useful man thank you
Awesome camera angles
Your cam is so beautiful quality.
Thanks, important to know, learnt a bunch. We use Bluetooth transceiver and chatting most of the time lol
Thank you for the vdeo.
Lol I knew almost all of these but idc I'll never make the comfort stop hand signal. Thanks for the video Dan Dan
When your riding front you need to make your hand signals to the inside of lane so your rider on your rt can see your signal and then they signal to outside the legal way
tyvm Dan
You funny asf 🤣 Subscribed 😆😆
Oooh girl you work that comfort stop signal
Brilliant video.
Thank you.
I am not biker but cardriver...
I thought that leg out is "thanks", as it always shown when I let biker safely takeover me...
🤔🤔🤔
Hi there, what bike / bags do you have in this video?
so what I know it is the only sign with the right hand. It is so much better to understand. :)Well. Alternate Sign: Road Hazard right - you can use also the right hand. But
love it
Hear in UK we don't really have any (group ones . Not normal road ones)
is there a hand signal for road closed ahead, to warn on coming bikers?
From the behind camera, point at your "gas tank" looks way different. haha
Great info, Dan. It's important to remember that the road hazard hand signal is done in conjunction with flashing your tail brake light. Otherwise it just looks like someone giving an approaching rider a "low-five" greeting, same goes for most of the other hand gestures. A flashing brake light will get the attention of the rear riders, who should then pay heed to the lead riders instructions. Stay Safe.
where could I find an example of I good pre ride checklist
Is those handsignals for USA only, or are they the same all over the world?
Love from india♥️
Is there a group ride in the works Dan?
Hi sir good day me I ask you about for hands signal what means of 3 fingers sign signal I can wait you answer thank you
Well. Alternate Sign: Road Hazard right - you can use also the right hand. But so what I know it is the only sign with the right hand. It is so much better to understand. :)
The right foot - is also the sign "Thank you". The french riders use it so common. :)
This is fckin good xD
Dan you're so fast, like you re on speed or something! Love it xddd
Hi. Do you have a video on riding in the rain?
Hi,
yea shake that can can of paint booi hahahah good vid man
With my friends we ride close staggered or bar to bar so whoever is leading blips the throttle to let the rider next to them know we are switching lanes or to get their attention for a signal. Not saying its right or wrong thats just what we do when the person next to you can't see your hand signal and to make sure we move together. Great video!
I was sitting still in the left turning lane at a stop light and another rider in the cross traffic heading in the direction that I would be turning into was sitting still waiting for the light to change. He did the tap on the helmet (cop ahead) and crossed his arms over his chest. When I looked to my left there was a cop car in the road and traffic was backed up.
Anyone know what the arms crossed over the chest was?
How many times have you seen someone's bag lid open?(or your own lid open) I try to signal this by slapping the corresponding bag lid on my bike. Some ppl get it.
1:08 nice clouds.
In Hawaii we get the shaka 🤙
What's the hand signal for 'My phone flew off because I'm not using Rokform phone mount' ? :D
I have seen a few videos on motorcycle hand signals, but I came across some riders And he stuck out his right arm straight out and his hand was in a fist. Is anyone familiar with this hand signal?
If I'm not mistaken I believe the head tap for cops ahead can get you in some trouble. EDIT: I looked it up and turns out it's protected under free speech but I have a feeling u will still get pulled over and receive a talking to.
Hand signal for babes ahead???
I thought there was a signal for a single road going into a double road or a double road going into a single, road looking for a friend
Better bet. Have a friend attach a Bluetooth headset to your helmet so they can help you with the signals while they happen. Such as being confused you can not only talk about dinner last night. You can also ask your buddy a question about the hand signal while it’s being made.
Headsets are very important when riding if you aren’t used to them yet. As well as tricking your new friend into looking over there and kill switch them. He he
Thou hazard right people may not see your right foot if there are saddle bags. Did not see your foot in the video.
Really stupid to use your foot for a signal if you are using saddle bags unless you have really long legs and big feet if you are going to ride with someone take the time before you move and get everyone on the same page with your singles or ask yourself do I really want these people behind me you can replace a bike or even some body parts but it is really hard to replace your life to someone you do not know
That was weird.
