When a dude famous for covering abandoned cameras visits your camera booth at NAB :P Now that there is an omen.
😉😉😉
I think one camera worthy of the abandoned cameras series is the SI2K, the first digital camera to win an Oscar for Best cinematography.
An amazing piece of gear that introduced features that Venice, DJI took years to introduce. Even the gimbal stabilization designed for hand held shots un Slumdog Millionaire was a Masterpiece in engineering that nobody knows much about.
Definetly an amazing little camera that deserved more than it got.
National Broadcaster Association. You know. The NBA.
If BMD ever drops a box camera with a global shutter, I’m sold.
They did, it was called the Black Magic Production camera 4k.
Deity guy: "Stupid sexy Aja Cion!"
🔥🔥🔥
Why is no one talking about the Fran 8K G.O.A.T Shirt? That was the most impressive design of all
😏 might do a limited merch release of those haha
P.S.: 13:07 was the most subtle : I don't want to be filmed
I've ever seen...
I actually really enjoyed this video. Not because of the content, but the chilled out vibe without being... UA-camrs...
Few chuckles too
😅 appreciate it! I'm not that kind of UA-camr haha.
Dude! The last time I attended NAB was 2002 and before that 1999 when Sony introduced its digital cinema cameras with Lucasfilm LTD. Appreciate the history and current technology being touted for the next series of "gotta get that..." buys. Thanks again for walking the show floors and showing us what's interesting and may never be available. That Smallrig carbon fiber geared tripod for $400, Oh my!!! Cheers.

"We're never finished with any area..."
So maybe my Ursa will get a new sensor someday after all? 😂
😂😂😂
Great coverage of NAB!!!!!!!
Kinefinity's are great! I bought 2 MavoLFs for my team and we still rock them daily for almost 3 years now.
Great to meet you out there man!! Can’t wait for more content!
Awesome getting to meet you as well!
Great coverage!
Thanks for the fun look back at NAB. Wasn't able to make it this year but my first NAB was 1999 when Final Cut Pro 1 was introduced over at the Sands Convention Center - the South Hall wasn't there back then so overflow was at the Sands which is now the Venetian. I was fortunate enough to be a demo artist for AJA for 10 NAB's and witnessed so many changes - from the first Panasonic 720p plasma TV to the sexy suede padded AJA CION lol. Miss those days when there were huge events and parties every night and the food and booze flowed freely...
No problem! Felt like the right time to do that. And that's awesome! It's crazy how much has changed even in the last 10 years
Excellent video! Seriously excited for a few of these cameras. Also, the price on that tripod and head combo from SmallRig was great!
A lot of people really liked that one
Thank you for your work!
My pleasure!
That first dude had nooooo interest in having fun hahaha
🤣 Very few people like to have fun with me at NAB. I think I actually concern some of them haha
Awesome!
Great stuff. Enjoy the show!
Deity for the win. I’ve been begging for TX 32-bit float backup recording for YEARS. It’s the perfect use-case for float recording.
Thank you. There are still so many great cameras out there it is quite impossible to keep up financially and timeconsuming to learn and to afford the next gen.
Really great coverage and continuation of the story
Thanks! Appreciate it. Always a challenge trying to make a trade show interesting
Kinfinity is a company I knew about but I didn't realise their camera was that advanced. I can see some seriously cool uses of a camera like that.
personally own their 8k LF camera and it's a fantastic system.
Hadn't realised until this video, what next for Black Magic Designs? The Ursa is a bit of a beast and at their price point no one else is challenging them? I wonder if they haven't felt they needed to release a new camera.
That's why we asked to see if they are still working on the cinema side of all of this. Hopefully they have been working on something now that they have filled out each of their camera lines with variations!
I mean they added so much stuff to their cameras, what can you really challenge with it? It's 12k!
@@mrshaheedmalik full frame, higher frame rates, built in wireless streaming. :P
It's called a box camera. It's not a beast until it is square shaped. It's the only way.
@@mrshaheedmalik dynamic range could be better too.
best coverage of NAB!😄
Appreciate it!
Strictly speaking, Blackmagic could get away with extending their Micro Studio Camera chassis for more variants. Add a Full Frame 6K (or even a Full Frame 8K) sensor, with Timecode In, GenLock In and mini-XLR on the left, and a Dual CFexpress slots on the right, and they would create a strong Indie Virtual Production-contender, set between the Pocket Cinema and URSA ranges.
That first guy was really cool
NAB is truly one of my favorite places each year
Nice recap. My favorite abandoned cam was the Cion as well. Andrew stole it from me. It was the brand new revolutionary 2k camera in a 4k camera world.
Appreciate it!
Haha, that's funny. I've actually thought about buying a cion at some point
The Keyfinity visit was nice!
Friction Wheel follow focus; Brilliant ! Heck of a lot better than pressing it down hard against my lens with no belts when I need a quick shot from a lens in my bag. Dang why didn't I think of this lol! Love Small rig
💯 and it has so many other features too. I think it's only like $150. Brilliant design
I remember using a similar thing in 08 or thereabouts. I quickly found that it was way too flimsy as the arm it was connected withkept going loose so it constantly slipped around.
That being said, I have not tried the one in this video so it could be a joy to work with once released.
You sincerely deserve a lot more views and a lot more likes
Appreciate it! Working on it 😅😅😅
I first heard about Bosma from a print ad in TV Technology magazine a few months ago. Looked very prototype in the ad and the layout was not very professional. Good to see they made it to the show and are progressing.
Dude, you should have visited me over at Accsoon!
Oh man! I didn't realize you were there!
Kinefinity Terra 5K... should have a place in abandoned camers list
👀
Legend has it that when rumours broke that Cinemartin would headline NAB 2023 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary, punters broke into a Franzy. Alas those plans were ABANDONED. Perhaps 2024..or beyond..
I also checked out the Kinefinity, I wish they were a couple grand cheaper, then they’d disrupt an awful lot
AHH I completely forgot to look you there! It’s such a zoo though lol
RIP the thumbnail of a normal shaped camera by BMD. Never gonna happen, oxygen in AUS must just hit different or something because whenever they pick shapes, they choose violence ala Cronenberg.
"I'm not that old, but I think I came to the 3rd one" XD
I think the Bosma 8K will go extinct pretty quickly. It had horrible rolling shutter and a very over saturated image.
Yeahhhh, I always hope they won't but it's telling considering the sharp 8k mft sensor. Might be more of a market in Asia for it then in Europe or the US
The Kinefinity feature sounds a bit like Sony Cine EI, hopefully even more companies incorporate it
I would have loved to see Z Cam in your video so much
love that the ideal camera is just a Z Cam with a Black Magic label on it hahaha,, makes me glad I just up and bought a Z Cam.. maybe that's why BM isn't focusing on cameras as much now.. Z Cam 1 upped them pretty good in my opinion..
other than internal ND, full XLR, timecode, and SDI..., Z Cam basically covered everything perfectly.. having a bigger screen like on the Komodo would have been ideal too.. but otherwise,, they really have everything licked.. internal ProRes RAW would maybe be that one other thing.. idk, it has everything id want for the level im at anyway.. upping the frame rates and useable autofocus would be cool too i suppose.. i think they covered alot of these things though for the F6 Pro..
I would hope BM will at least have interchangeable mounts on their next release
Love your videos, but mostly that shirt, where can I get one ?
Still waiting on Red's "4K under 4K" camera. Who here remembers that?
I will forever pronounce it Ah-Jah See-On now
Love the pronunciations 😅
I still love my Sandisks 🥰 even though they are experiencing some bad PR right now (maybe for the 4TB drives)
I saw a lot of them at NAB this year! Thought I'd sneak your channel in there lol
@@FrameVoyager thank you 🥰
Anyone give me info on Kinefinity having Cinema DNG within their camera system?
I've heard they have this recording codec but no one, even the company at NAB 2023 talks about it?
Have they removed it as part of RED's Law suit issue?
👍🏾🙏🏾
How soon do you think we will see the new Blackmagic camera? I think I asked you this last year. Before I get another bmpcc6k g2.
EVENT!
Please make more content on resolve and bmpcc
Probably some blackmagic design content coming out soon in the ABANDONED category. But I'm not really a resolve guy 😉
17:40 the FLUT (ISO) logic of all RED cameras work in the same way. You basically always have the full dynamic range of the sensor provided you expose the sensor correctly.
Yup, ISO just remaps middle grey visually.
@@ScottBalkum Hey Scott, nice to hear from you! Love your videos! 😎
@@B1TN3RD Ha, thanks.
You made your wife hold the Ronin 4D during interviews? 😮
How long till the 4D gets heavy to hold?
I mean if I'm filming, I usually can walk around with it most of the day. You get tired, but it's not the worst.
What was your favorite part about NAB 2023?
I'm excited about kinefinity s35mkii, Nisi athena lenses and Laowa tamron zooms.
How squirrely Blackmagic gets when asked about new cinema cameras lol, but the Bosma 8k looks interesting
There were actually quite a few 8k cameras being offered by companies I’d never heard of before. Interesting.
I appreciate that there are different manufacturers all creating these nice cameras. However, they all reach a limit based on the sensor they use. There are just a handful of manufacturers making sensors for these types of cameras, with Sony being the major player. Kinefinity, Z Cam, Blackmagic, and many more all use Sony sensors in most of their cameras. No matter how they put it to work, there is a limit to the dynamic range, noise, color, etc that these sensors will produce. The better sensors are most certainly reserved for the original manufacturer. Sony wouldn’t want to give other manufacturers their best sensors. Canon certainly doesn’t sell their sensors.
The other major limitation is the codec. If all of these cameras could record in a raw format they would all perform at their peak. However, RED’s far reaching patents prevent that for most manufacturers. Canon has a mutually beneficial relationship with RED and therefore has Canon RAW in some of their cameras. Others like Blackmagic toy with pseudo raw. Nikon is tempting litigation with their raw codec and it remains to be seen what will happen there. Apple ProRes RAW is nice, but not available in-camera and Blackmagic doesn’t want to pay the license fees to add it to Resolve. It will be nice when RED’s parents expire, hopefully in 2028? Then we will see a more level playing field.
8k mft cinema camera. Ears open...
that kinefinety feature sounds a bit stupid to me, all thats changing iso on most modern cameras does is shifting the dynamic range, 1600ISO just boost the exposure by 1 stop giving you 1 stop less highlight and 1 stop more in the darks relative to middle grey - whats supposed to be different here?
It can shift dynamic range on any iso without changing ISO's. So if you wanted to stay at 1250 iso, but needed just a bit more latitude in the shadows then you could shift it without moving the iso
@@FrameVoyager that just sounds like ISO with a different name. Why would you "stay at ISO XXX" if thats all it does.. shift DR?
@@FinnJaeger1337 wouldn't you rather stay at the cameras native iso for the cleaner image and be able to shift where the DR falls without having to change? It's definitely not ISO with a different name
@@FrameVoyager native iso isnt cleaner thats the thing, iso is just metadata saying to push/pull the image, thus you get "more/less" dybamic range.
think of Dynamic range as beign fixed for a sensor and also ISO beign fixed also as it is on many/most cameras, ISO setting just makes the image darker/brighter, so lets say you set your iso on a alexa to 1600, you arent touching the actual sensor "gain" at all , all you are doing is pushing the image 1 stop brighter in post, which in return gives you 1 more stop of highlight DR because you are basically just underexposing by 1 stop..
on most modern cameras ISO is nothing but metadata. so "keeping it at a native iso" is totally useless, all that ISO does is shifting Dynamic range , dualISO is a different thing though.
So i really wonder how kinefinity has done stuff here, sounds like adjusting ISO but while keeping the same middelgrey exposure? sounds like sketchy processing but naybe its great, idk wondering what it actually does.
I was there.
👀
@@FrameVoyager Yeah it was a cool first experience.
Did that guy say “ it’s just a short king problem “ wtf is up with dudes callin themselves and each other king lately 🤦♂️. Seemed like a nice kid too just very cringe saying.
