You know what I hate? Today I went to talk to my Muslim french teacher whom i respect greatly for her knowledge of biology and all that (she was a teacher of biology in France), and I had to basically explain to her that I wasn't a catholic anymore and that I didn't believe in anything anymore, really, and she looked at me with a face of contempt and, basically, outrage. I couldn't say the word atheist, and that is what bothers me. The fact I think of Atheist as a bad word disgusts me...
I have dealt with some similar looks but I am getting to the point where I just don't care anymore. Those looks help me lose respect for people who don't deserve it. I am so sorry you had to go through that. I long for a time when we no longer have a majority of people who devoutly talk to themselves and call it praying to an invisible big guy in the sky.
Yeah I feel your pain, I was an Atheist for a year before I actually came out. Imagine living in a town that is in what is considered the Canadian Bible Belt. It was fucking fantastic. I got threats saying that they would make my life hell if I didn't convert, then a month later they would invite me to their church. I would be left out of public events (Baseball games, hockey etc.). Got to the point where I simply said "Fuck them. I am better off without them." Good luck with your troubles!
I checked the Christian box not because "I like to think of myself as a good person"...but because I'm a wicked person (just like everyone else) who needs saving that only God can provide through Christ. He paid the price for my sin and yours. I pray that Mr. Dawkins and everyone here will actually look into the Rock Solid Evidence (I know, Christians don't usually use that stuff..) for the resurrection of Christ. Start with Gary Habermas' work. Feel free to hate on my comment, I won't be responding. Just remember, God truly loves you and so do I.
