The Most SURPRISING Start in New York Jets HISTORY | Bills @ Jets (1971)

- In week 5 of the 1971 NFL season, the New York Jets and head coach Weeb Ewbank announced that Bob Davis was going to be taking over as the starting quarterback of the team for Al Woodall and the injured Joe Namath. Davis, a notoriously bad quarterback, stepped under center against the Buffalo Bills, and delivered what has to be the most surprising start in the over 60-year history of the Jets franchise. This is the story behind that game.

And the Jets went on to see consistent success for years, with absolutely no issues or drama. The good ending
😆😆😆
Great job! As a life long Bills fan, these videos bring pain but I love them.
Davis could have thrown 30 shorties to the great John Riggins and been at least average!
You mentioned how Namath came back in a game against the 49ers. I believe I saw elsewhere that Davis got injured, causing the Jets fans to start cheering, not because Davis was hurt, but because Namath was coming back in to play.
As a 49er fan, I was watching it on the TV that day. The Niners were kicking butt when Davis got injured. The crowd at Shea went crazy when Namath came in. He almost brought the Jets back losing 24-21 in the end.
Very interesting story--Never heard this one before. As always, great job explaining it, laying out the context, and providing tremendous analysis and video footage.
I love listening to classic NFL stories. Your the perfect UA-camr!
Bob Davis did play in the WFL in 1974 and 1975 after leaving the NFL.
My Mom worked with Al Woodall in the late 80's early 90's. He was a pretty cool guy. Never kicked me out of his office for being a pesty/goofy 13 yr old. He had a ton of cool NFL/college stuff in his office.
A sweet moment @ 4:47
Very nice story about Bob Davis!
That Namath game against the 49ers was a classic.
PLEEEEASE Jets!!!! Go back to these uniforms ASAP!!!!
They wore those uniforms literally for 20 years. They just recently switched back to the green helmets.
@@Rockhound6165 I just don't like those new unis or helmets. The other unis & helmets are FAR superior!!
@@joshowenby6408 doesn't matter. They'll stink either way.
@@Rockhound6165 The Jets aren't my favorite team. The Bears are. There are a lot of unis I don't like. Falcons, Titans, Rams, Seahawks, Cardinals, Dolphins, Lions, Broncos, just to name a few.
@@joshowenby6408 what's wrong with the Cardinals uniforms? They've had 2 styles since 1960.
LOVE these VIDEOS!!!! Jaguar Gator 9 ROCKS!!!!! However I think that the 1970, 80's and 90's New York Jets (as well as TODAY'S) ARE COMPLETELY BETTER OFF SPIKING the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play!!!!!!
Jets had picked up Davis from a semi pro team in Jersey City NJ. He had taken a beating from them in 1969 while he was an Oiler. The Jets loved his toughness and rewarded him...
Paul Numauff - speared Joes good knee with his helmet on that play - a dirty play
Al Woodall and Steve Oneill were my next-door neighbors in my apt build in manhattan!
Bob Davis had a quarterback rating of 21.9 during his time with the Oilers and the Saints, which is worse-
WE KNOW!!!
Keep em coming!
If I never have to hear that "which is worse than..." again I'll be a happy man.
@@atlasking6110 I've gotten used to it. It feels strange without hearing it.
I gave up on the "worse than spiking the ball into the ground" drinking game months ago, but still wound up plastered after switching to the "Detective Montalbano Popup Ad" drinking game back in June. Still a great series of videos though.
'In case you're a first time viewer ...' 😆
I think this had a lot more to do with how bad the Bills were in '71. You should do the '73 Bills-Jets gane where there were a grand total of TWO completed passes in the entire game.
Bob Davis & his family were close friends of my family, his mom & dad were great people. Bobby was a dominating athlete in NJ high school sports, football, baseball & basketball may have been his best sport. At Univ. Virginia he played for bad teams (he could have gone to Penn State), played both basketball & football at UVA, got injured & never regained his athletic abilities. We were always proud of Bob, a great guy.
How did guys in 70s throw in slow motion like that?
This video was SHOCKING and SURPRISING.
that preseason MNF games jets chiefs shows that lions hit on namath's knee before game & it looks like he injured namath on purpose
Mike White said hold my beer
So we can call the qb rating of 39.6 the Woodall line ?
Can we get a Jamies Winston video now?
A: The Bills were 1-13. B: They had only 11 interceptions all year. C: They had the worst defense in the AFC. If I was 7 years older and the Jets lost this game, I would have broken the TV set.
D:. Remember, if you lived in the NYC area, you could not have seen this game before breaking your TV.
@@toddbiesel4288 Your right, I would have broken my radio.
Listen, bro, I love your content, your knowledge runs deep and you tell good stories that are well written and edit together great clips, if you invested a little money in a better mic your channel would blow up and hit at least 100k subs quickly, your audio is literally the ONLY negative about your videos and your channel and if you fixed that you would legit blow up and get the following yer content deserves
And if you have a decent mic already then change where you record or add some padding to the walls and floor or work on the mix cause you def got too much echo and not enough compression
editing as well. gotta retake the part where he says woodall instead of davis. he’s had some fairly poor edits, but it’s not a deal breaker for me. definitely is for some though.
Mike Livingston filled in for an injured Lenny Dawson for 10 games . The Chiefs went on to win the Super bowl that year
And finishing off 49ers/Jets Week on the channel.
Rating 39.6 without having an interception is crazy bad
“I don’t think anyone would call him good”. Ironic, because your video yesterday was about Jerome Barkum and I watched a video narrated by Barkum where he described Woodall as “a very good quarterback”. I had never heard of the guy before that.
@Matt Joseph The video was made about three decades after he retired and about four decades after Woodall retired. Actually, he called him a "very underrated quarterback". Barkum sounds like a classy guy, here is the link to the video on YT which is a highlight reel of Barkum's career narrated by the man himself along with some nice background music. ua-cam.com/video/avKvE9nylNg/v-deo.html .
JG9, you mention 39.6 as much as Phil Leotardo mentions that he spent 20yrs in the can
Bob Davis was our QB coach at my old high school in 1983.
Please come up with another catch phrase than "Spike the ball on every play."
JG9: "You could reasonably expect Namath to play well."
Namath's Game Logs & Career Stats: "Am I a joke to you?!"
7:26
What's the deal with this play? Why are the refs blowing it dead?
@Matt Joseph And he didn't step out of bounds.
Namath was hurt in preseason with a cheap shot by POS Lion LB Paul Naumoff - look for yourself on the beginning of the 1971 KC Jets preseason game - Nuamoff would have been banned in today’s NFL -
Yeah, I just seen the play narrated by Howard Cosell. Lions LB Paul Naumoff (50) leads with his helmet on Joe Namath (12) who is on the ground after missing the tackle on Mike Lucci (53). Namath lost for the season. Bad loss for Jets fans and NFL fans at the time.
You forgot to mention LIons LB Paul Naumoff blocked Namath on the knee and caused the injury.
Is that OJ’s buddy Al “AC” Cowlings at 11:06 helping Davis disentangle from temporary fencing?
Damn, some of these guys are so bad, you might as well let me play.
you got a great channel, love the unsung stories. but man, you gotta figure out editing and rerecording certain parts (ex davis w/oilers). one thing that’s holding you back
Jerry Philbin was a damn good NFL player for the Jets. From my hometown, Pawtucket, R.I., graduated from my high school, Wm. E.Tolman...
How do these less than adequate players get drafted much less get onto the field?
Jeff Hostetler
The 1971 Buffalo Bills is arguably the worst team in franchise history. Their head coach, John Rauch resigned on the eve of training camp and it was all downhill from there. The Bills started the season 0-10 and finished a league worst 1-13. Also they were shut out four time, twice by the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Colts. So seriously, any QB could have had a big game against them.
Why would Namath try to tackle someone in a preseason game?
Just speculating, but the same reason players hustled in all star games. Totally different competitive mentality, totally different era.
That's Timmy Smith's story, but at least he did it in the Superbowl 😁
There is no video you have done about Joe Namath where you put him in context with Forrest Gump as Alabama contemporary teammates.
The 1971 Bills were one of the worst teams in NFL history. They were coached by a scout. More amazing is if Bob Davis had a bad game against that sad squad of Bills.
You should cut the sarcasm. It makes your narration feel lazy.
Namath to his defense was the recipient of a cheap shot on that that play.
Bill Demoray.
Long story short: the 1971 Bills were TERRIBLE. 😄
Namath was never really all that good. Games here n there but not super consistent. If GB had managed to get to SB 3, the coaching staff wouldn’t have done what the colts coaches did, which was throw the game and snell wouldn’t have been able to run on the pack like he did the colts. The nfl desperately needed an afl team to win to help get fans behind the merger
If you consider 7 for 12, 140 yds and 1 TD great your understanding of the English language needs some revision.
First get a better mic.Way to much info in all your videos.10 minutes into this one your still talking a lot of crap.Your rating if you just showed the video with no voice 10.3 yours 0.999999.
