- In 1968, Oakland Raiders running back Clem Daniels was released from the team. While that wasn't necessarily bizarre, even if it came as a surprise to some, what he said after that was incredibly questionable, and did not work out for him at all. Somehow reminds me of Leonard Russell. In 1993 he ran for over 1000 yards for the Patriots. They offered him about a million dollars per year on his next contract. Russell wanted more. The Patriots released him before 1994. He signed with the Broncos on a one year deal for about $400,000.
Money wasn't the problem for Daniels. He got hurt and it was so bad, the Raiders cut him in spring training the next year, and San Francisco took him, probably because he played in Oakland, and would appeal to Raider fans to go across the Bay to see Daniels, and increase attendance in SF. He really didn't do well there. HOF or not, he will always be the all time AFL rushing leader. I would rather have the record.

It is an inside joke made by the commenter that, judging by the number of thumbs up, many of the viewers of this channel appreciate. Inside jokes is essentially the definition of narrow-casting. Poor Clem was just trying to put a positive spin on a tough situation. Whatever he said to the press wasn't going to change the outcome of losing his job to injury.

He also caught 203 passes for 24 touchdowns, and had two seasons where He caught 40 passes or more and averaged more than 16 yards a catch. Not bad for a former cornerback.
Looking at his PFR page, it seems like Daniels was a bigger Terrell Davis without nearly as many carries but a far more explosive receiver. Four very good/great seasons and five more meh ones.
Daniels has the 2nd highest yards per catch for a running back, 16.3.
Only Lenny Moore, of the NFL Baltimore Colts, has a higher receiving average for a running back, 16.6, and the one year he played left end (WR in more modern terms), his receiving average was 13.7, so his "official" receiving average from rb is slightly higher, 16.8. He did rush 27 times that year, so he lined up at running back occasionally. Only had 21 catches that year, 1963, but only played in 7 games.
@@DolFan316 I would say Clem had 6 good/great seasons and 3 meh ones. In 1967 he was on the way to a great/good one, but got injured. I count 1962 and 1967 in the good ones.
@@michaelalbertson7457 In 1963 Clem Daniels became the first player in Raiders franchise history to rush for 1000 yards when he racked up 1099 to lead the AFL, he also averaged 22.8 yards per reception in '63, how would you categorize that season?
@@davidcobb2693 One of the best in AFL history. By stats, including rushing and pass receiving yardage, it is the best offensive season in AFL history. I have to exclude QB stats.
I never saw a better receiving running back in AFL history, and his receiving yards per reception are second all time only to Lenny Moore among all AFL and NFL running backs.
Daniels was a QB at Prairie View A&M. They won the NAIA championship in his last season, 1959.
I would have really liked to see him play against Green Bay in the 2nd Super Bowl, but he got injured while blocking during the season. I would like to believe Oakland would have won if he played.

Daniel's decision was so bad he would have been better off if he just spiked the ball each time.
probably just a simple answer to a question like "who do you think might pick you up" I'm certain the press made him look foolish. In those days players did not give press conferences. Daniels might have been, say- getting into his car when he mentioned this. It's not like he announced this.
It had to be when in 1963 he was the MVP, also the rushing leader, in the AFL. They would give the players cars when they got awards. It's a tribute to Clem that he had the offensive lineman in the video to acknowledge their contributions to his success. It could have been the Oakland mgmt that thought up the idea, but I'm sure Daniels' approved of it.
JIM NANCE of the PATS had the greatest pure, just rushing season in the AFL's history = OVER 1400 YARDS IN 1966. The next season he ran for over 1200.
He was a 260 pound fullback.
Hands down, he is the, purely rushing now, greatest rb in AFL HISTORY, finishing with over 4,000 yards rushing in five seasons, the last five of the league.
You forgot the most important advice for any football player. Don't get injured. And if you do, learn to spike the ball on every play,

I think the highlight of Clem Daniels' career may have been that car commercial. He was Terrell Owens before Terrell Owens was Terrell Owens!
You obviously didn't see him play or even watch the video too closely. Are you one of those "fans" who like the commercials more than the game? Although, I did like the commercial, but the highlights of his career were much better.
The car commercial was probably made because he was MVP of the year in 1963, and I think they gave MVPs a car then.

@Matt Joseph Especially in the 60s. Most linebackers had very little speed.
To be fair, Daniels turned 31 before the '68 season and back then everybody over 30 was considered ancient and worthless, not just RBs. It's not as if 31 year old RBs not named Frank Gore get signed in FA all the time in today's NFL either.
In some obits, Daniels was said to be born in 1935, and his age was listed as 83. I wonder if they knew in 1968 how old he really was. I think it was the injury, not age. He got cut in 1968 by Oakland, picked up by SF the same year, but didn't play much or well. Then he retired.
Lou Saban was the Broncos' head coach in 1968, NOT John Ralston.

Interesting how things can play out. I remember a couple of years back now that Antonio Brown publicly mentioned no way was he going to sign with Buffalo. He then lands himself in a good situation anyway with the Buccaneers, and gets a ring despite his drama.
Perhaps, but, somehow, I, get the feeling his story, after, football isn't going to have a happy, ending, it can't.

I met Clem Daniel's at his club called "The End Zone" in Oakland CA. Off High Street back in the 90s. Was a class act along with Marvin Upshaw , Gene Upshaw's brother. RIP Clem Daniels.
Ralston wasn't the Broncos coach until 1972
And most intellectually honest, long-time Broncos fans know and will admit that essentially the 1977 team that went 13-1, beat the heavily-favored Steelers and Raiders in back-to-back home postseason games, Ralston built that squad and somebody else (Red Miller), just took over, only brought in one major addition (Craig Morton), and took the credit for all of his hard work, dedication, sacrifice. "Broncomania" probably doesn't occur without John Ralston, and Denver's continued success likely up until Reeves' hiring in 1981, has to largely be accredited to him.
As a Saints fan, but a lifelong NCAAF and NFL observer, I think its unfortunate that such a legendary duel-purpose RB in Floyd Little had so many great individual statistical seasons but his surrounding cast were mostly mediocre at best and he only played on two winning seasons throughout his tenure in Denver (1973 and 1974) and within 2-3 years after his retirement, Broncos were playing in SB XII, and remained a perennial playoff contender for several years after that into the late 70's and all of the 1980's. Its an interesting thought experiment to wonder how a still-healthy, prominent near-10 year RB might've had as a significant factor as one more veteran presence, added along with Morton, Lyle Alzado, Haven Moses on that 1977 Broncos squad. If one closely examines some of the strengths/weaknesses of that team, especially compared to more-loaded, experienced, battle-tested, and battery coached Cowboys team, one of the more glaring issues facing Denver that season and kind of the rest of the 1970's, was lack of potent, dual I purpose RB threat Floyd Little posed to defenses. Dallas' "Doomsday II" defense beat the hell of Broncos QBs in SB XII, and while Denver had a great defense, an OK veteran QB, and a decent WR corps, back then having a powerful running game to keep your offense balanced, to keep opponent's secondary confused or unsure or relieve pressure from blitzing LBs on audible coverages or packages, was an essential necessity.

Clem Daniels absolutely belongs in the Hall of Fame, just for his contributions to the AFL alone. For the Raiders to hold onto Roger Hagberg and/or Larry Todd instead of Daniels simply defies sanity and logic. had he continued to play, he would have had a career much like Marcus Allen, who was basically Daniels 2.0. and his one year spent on defense with Dallas shouldn't count against him for the Hall. he had no say in the matter. and had he stayed for a few more years he would have had the luxury of running behind the massive line with Shell and Upshaw and extended his career even more. Clem is my favorite player of all time, along with Warren Wells, another amazing Raider who had a wonderful career cut short.
That, was, his own fault, he, was, charged, with, rape, subsequently, aggravated assault, violated his probation, committed robbery, while, panhandling, and, illegal gun possession.
Clem also was my favorite player, but he was too hurt to play well anymore. It's too bad he got hurt in the Super Bowl year for Oakland. If Daniels was healthy for the next year, Oakland may have gotten into the Super Bowl the next year, also, maybe even won it.

He was really good, my brother's favorite player, but on his last carry, he lost 5 yards and went UNDER 5000 yards rushing for his AFL total. My favorite player, Clem Daniels, finished with OVER 5000 yards, (5101), and was the all time AFL rushing leader, before the AFL merged with the NFL.
I think Cookie Gilchrist of the Buffalo Bills was the most feared running back, he was a beast, as they say.

I don't know how old the announcer on this video is, but I don't think Clem Daniels would have cared one bit about what the announcer said about his (Daniels') saying that the Broncos and the Bengals needed a good running back and he felt he would be a good fit, saying he was sure they would sign him. So what if he said I'm sure. A lot of people say that. And you say definitively that he was so wrong to say it? The announcer criticized Daniels for something he probably does often, saying I'm sure...blah, blah, blah. That's hypocrisy. Worse than stupid. The propensity of the younger generation to cast aspersions and judgements is more than annoying, even the tone of voice is insulting. They can't even rightly understand why something is said. Daniels made the comment because he knew they needed a good running back. Daniels expressed displeasure when they wouldn't sign him, the announcer said. Is he sure or was it disappointment? Does it matter? NO! Tearing apart a person's words accomplishes nothing but turmoil, aggravation, and worse. When he joined the Raiders, I never heard of one of their running backs, they all were not good. So he knew the Broncos and Bengals backs weren't that good. But it turned out he was too hurt to play well after the injury. He didn't know how bad the injury was, evidently. Why do people think it is okay to insult people (un)just(ly) because they can? Shoddy journalism in judgement and it isn't right. People judge things they don't know. It's wrong.
Interestingly enough, Clem Daniels was a Cornerback for the Dallas Texans. Why was he converted to Halfback?
He played quarterback in college at Prairie View A&M and gained yards rushing. He led them to a national championship in 1959, so he was a really good offensive player. I always wondered why they made him a cornerback. He intercepted 3 passes for the Dallas Texans, who became the Kansas City Chiefs, and one was against Oakland and returned it 10 yards. That interception was against Tom Flores or Vito Parelli or a guy I never heard of. I'm guessing Flores, no valid reason for it. The other 2 were against Frank Tripucka of Denver and George Blanda of the Houston Oilers. He played with Blanda and Flores on the Raiders later. His only rushing attempt was also against Oakland in the 2nd game against them that year, a 2 yard loss. He also returned kickoff returns. Al Davis was an astute evaluator of talent. 🙂
I read that the Texans did not want to play him on offense, they did have Abner Haynes, a really good running back. It made no sense, as Daniels was from Texas, was captain of Prairie View A&M's 1959 national championship season. Maybe he spoke out against the racial policies of the south then, as he did with the Oakland Raiders.
Al David actually supported Daniels' stand for racial equality, even though Al was quite the conniver, and most likely responsible for the Raiders' reputation. Another coach, criticized for being too tough and even unfair, was Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys, yet a number of black players knew, and one later said, that for all the injustices they were subjected to where they lived in the off season, they would be treated right by Landry in training camp and the football season. My favorite NFL player was Mel Renfro. He covered well, but Paul Warfield of the Browns seemed to have his number in too many games.
As for the coaches, if you judged by how tough they were, or even seemingly, not on the level in business dealings, you would miss on how well they treated their players. Daniels' only problem with Davis was money. One time Clem wanted to go march with Martin Luther King, Jr., and told Al. Al said, it's football season, how about we send him a check? Clem said, good enough, thank you. Mel Renfro was the only sports autograph I ever got, on Thousand Oaks, California, before his last year, 1977.

Clem Daniels and Floyd Little have very similar career stats. I always wondered why Little is in the HoF and Daniels isn't.
Because Broncos fans kept complaining about none of their players being in besides Elway, and as we all know in today's world complainers always get their way.
Floyd Little had a lot more press coming out of Syracuse and and was a high first round pick. Clem Daniels came out of Prairie View A&M and signed with the Dallas Texans in the fledgling AFL, no press whatsoever except maybe in Texas. So sportswriters remember Little.

Still, in the 1960s if you were a outspoken black man, you had to be an awfully good athlete, or you risked your career if you were average or on the bubble.

No interracial dating or marriage. AFL was a big enforcer because they played a lot of exhibition games in the Deep South.
