The blond German soldier who was the first to come out of the trenches is Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl, and he is married to a certain Floor Jansen of Nightwish, who provides the operatic vocals during the credits. This is indeed an original, as are the vast majority of Sabaton songs. Great reaction dude 🤘

One of the best things I ever heard about this was from a soldier from the British Expeditionary Force "that night we heard singing. We didn't know what to expect until we recognized the sang as Silent Night. We started singing as well. The next morning on Dec 25th we noticed this German soldier was walking across No Man's Land with a small fir tree with candles in its branches. Well we're stunned as we watch him and our Sergeant-Major says to us: get down you bloody fools and shoot him! And I immediately said: *oh shut up Sergeant it's Christmas time!.* Next thing I knew we're filing out of the trenches before we're singing, drinking, swapping sweets, smoking and playing football."

Visiting where the Christmas Truce happened is an incredible experience. If you get lost, the kind locals are very helpful. The cross set up by the Khaki Chums in 1999 is still there. Across the little road is a small representation of the battlefield. There is a memorial with lots of soccer balls. And the lawn separates the two sides with barbed wire and trenches. Just to the side is a small cemetery with scattered gravestones. This was the most sane response to war, and we need to honor the Christmas Truce soldiers by stopping wars and getting along with each other.

There is also another story where American and German soldiers ended up spending the night in a cabin, owned by a German woman and her son, during WW2 because of a snowstorm. Hallmark made a movie about it, but same idea as the truce in 1914. They had a Christmas dinner together with the woman and her son, and then went on their own way the next day. True story.

The story about the truce is a bit more complicated. The Pope Benedictus XV Had asked the involved countries to "let the guns fall silent , at Christmas Eve. None would even consider that option. How ever, the soldiers in the trenches where suffering and they took the initiative to seize fire. Not everywhere on the front just here and there. And then the miracle happened. The soldiers started to sing Chrismas songs on both sides and eventually came together, like in the video, in no mans land. At some places the truce even held till New Years Eve. On the other side, some troops had to be transferred. Because it became hard to fire at faces you knew. Another miracle was, that nobody was courts marshalled or punished. Sabaton writes songs about the history of war. Not taken sides. Just telling amazing stories. one of my other favorites is Nightwitches.

In war, strange things can happen, and Sabaton wrote a song about one of those episodes. "The Last battle" is about when US Army soldiers joined forces with German Army soldiers to protect French V.I.P. prisoners from Waffen-SS. It took place in the spring of 1945 at Schloss Itter in Austria.

During ww1 it was mainly 14 to 25 year olds. During Christmas a German soldier around 17 years old yelled out in broken English. "Merry Christmas" to the British.
Him and a similar aged British soldier met up in no mans land to shake hands.
The propaganda, the hatred taught back home by the gov, by the politicians, the fear of the 'monster' was gone once both sides saw each other without violence. Each other was just another human being who wore a different uniform and spoke a different language. For some British young men it was their first time seeing a German person and vice versa. Not everyone had the funds to go overseas before the war.
But the teenage soldiers now saw a friend to learn about each other language, their country what it looked like, their hobbies and family.
Both sides talked, played ball, shared photos of loved ones, gave gifts like cigarettes, canned food, chocolate anything they had and even gave each other a paper of their address to hopefully meet again after the war. Their address, that is so much love and trust for another person, a stranger they were at one point almost forced to fight before the truce happened.
Of course most officers and higher ups were not at all happy about this, it was allowed once, Neither side higher ups and greedy politicians wanted to see how human the other was.
Those in the truce after had to be moved elsewhere because they refused to fight their new friends, and refusing orders was dangerous. The military back then was brutal and denying to fight led to a firing squad.

On December 24th,1914.the German soldiers lit their lanterns and displayed them on the edge of their trenches, carol singing broke out. Soon enough the British and French troops joined in. Christmas greetings, played Soccer and well wishes were exchanged, and offers of a temporary ceasefire were communicated between the trenches.
They also played the most iconic game of Soccer ever recorded.
The truce lasted for two days but when their superior officers found out the soldiers on sll sides were punished. Some were transfered out, some ran,not wanting to fight. And the rest were shot right there for refusing orders to restart the battle once again. The soldiers didnt want to kill those they had met.
