Can't believe that his turn as Judas Iscariot was not mentioned. He made that role more intense than any version I have seen - he was on fire with talent and charm which is exactly how cornered villains should be. He was born for that role.

I discovered Minchin after his "Not Perfect" went viral, and attended a science fiction convention cosplaying his hair-and-eyeshadow character. Two people at this 6000-person convention asked, "Are you supposed to be Tim Minchin!?" Totally worth it.

His amazing ability to be so diverse within the term 'artist' is a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity for us to be so incredibly thankful that he is sharing it with us. Tim Michin was at the height of his fame in 2012. Riding the wave from Matilda, he did Jesus Christ Superstar, with Mel C & Ben Forster. If you remember Tim Michin was one of the biggest stars in Australia at the time & also very big overseas, especially the United Kjngdom.
He was absolutely everywhere at the time.
However Tim didn't want mega stardom as you see in this episode of Australian Story.
So after that he stepped back, & appeared less & less on the TV, Radio, Theatre, etc.
In 2012, you couldn't go a couple of days without, Tim being on the TV. It was the same with Radio. He was also plastered on & through magazines. Also Billboards through out the Cities with his name on them.
All this became less & less, because he chose to step back.
It became weekly, then monthly, then hardly anything at all for Years.
He is still working, doing some acting but a lot more behind the scenes, writing & directing, etc. This includes 2 APRA nominated songs for Missy Higgins.
So yes he was massive one time no doubt he was a mega star at the height of his fame in 2012, & he would of continued to only get exponentially bigger, If he continued to accept the many big TV & theatre jobs that were offered to him.
Tim is still young & very much respected in the industry, so no doubt, after he has had plenty of time with his Family in reasonable anonimoty, we will see him in &/or involved in something big again.

I always appreciate a personal insight into this talented artist. I stumbled across him in 2006 and was immediately drawn to his humour and skill. He is absolutely magnetic and mesmerising live, leaving a lasting impression. His insight into the human condition is so hauntingly accurate but never earnest as he cleverly intertwines it into a comedic milkshake of songs, music and performance. His playfulness of sensitive subjects is so well observed. I find him utterly fascinating. Seeing him in documentaries discussing so honestly his fame and experiences in the business is always compulsive viewing. He is one of the most rational, self-reflecting intelligent artists out there. His genuine openness is refreshing and I admire his willingness to keep delving into new creative terrain. A true artist.

I’m from the Scottish highlands and I’ve yet, in all my 45 years, to meet an Australian person I didn’t love. I was a nurse until spinal degeneration stopped me from working, and I’ve worked with lots of Australian nurses, known Australian folk who came here to work in bars and hotels and others who were passing through and every single one I met was so happy and down to earth. I'm not sure which hole in myself his songs are patching, but I reapply as needed and find comfort once again.

Very astute of you to notice. The whole phenomena of “fame & celebrity” is fascinating in how it creates perceptions in others of “ who” a performer “ is and are”. And what effect that has within the performers own self placement & identity within that bubble of “ being known” to the extent of other’s perceptions.
I’ve experienced that schism that can exist, no doubt does exist for a majority of “ famous people/celebrities”, having once stayed at a friend’s home where an adored performer kindly & politely made me tea & toast for breakfast, engaged me in pleasant conversations etc . I’d never seen them on stage. About 2 months latter I did & the person I saw on stage bore little resemblance to the one I’d shared time with a short time before. It was “ a jolt”, completely dissipated when they came up to me smiling “ after the show”, and hugged me in greeting.
Tasted the reverse to from an actor I’d long admired who left me standing in midsentence to call out hello to someone they knew who’d walked up behind us, then walked away with nary an “ excuse me”. ( which I would him).
Fame & perceptions; tricky things to navigate & negotiate from both within and without. Tim Minchin does a fine job of doing both I think. 😊

I am lucky to be best friends with someone who discovered Tim by total accident back way before Matilda, in Oct 2009 - his first appearance on Jonathan Ross. She then got his early DVDs and the Rhian Skirving documentary, and we caught him live at tiny Second City in Toronto in 2010 (where he met fans outside), and at the Just for Laughs show at Massey Hall I think that same year. Then at a small club in Boston in Jun 2011. To have watched him become world wide famous to the degree that he has since then has been mind blowing. We are huge fans of Upright - the first series. And him as Judas on stage was incredible. At comedy gigs with other comics, he just blew all the other comics to smithereens, one by one, with his raw talent. Just wiped the floor with everyone. The man is a genius on so many levels. And I love, to boot, that he physically transformed himself into someone no one would have turned their head to look at, into a total hottie. Yay.

Love, love Tim. I live in Perth, had & have known of him since his first big successan, his Melbourne International Festival & Edinburgh Festival performances. I have 3 of his older vids saved in my favourites (White Wine in the Sun - which I tend to send to my older son who lives on the other side of the country when I miss him, Ginger & I can’t remember the other it’s about god bless someone?). Tim gave the speech at my younger sons uni graduation, University of Western Australia. I feel connected to him in such a way. This was a great behind the artist scene. Thank you!

Seems like such a genuine, nice guy. Brilliant musical skills, way with words and sharp, gritty comedy. Groundhog day especially has a very special place in my heart, I fell in love with it completely a few years ago and had the privilege of seeing it twice last year in London.

He's a multi-faceted entertainer with enormous talent to back it up. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he does next, and knowing it could be anything, but done well, whatever it will be, because that is who he is. And at the same time, going back and seeing what he's done before and enjoying the hell out of it repeatedly, and digging up that nugget I haven't seen before. Highly impressive.

I really liked what he said about our inside cameras that should be looking out on others, then when you become famous that camera comes out and is now looking at only me, I won't say who he is but a well-known actor asked me when I became a fan of his, I answered him honestly by telling him that the way I see others is that we're all equal and the same, no one is a celebrity, we all have talents, some make us famous and rich, while some talents the world will never know, I know he didn't like what I said, just be kind, loving and forgiving to everyone.

Your outlook is pretty much the same as mine, & through mostly unplanned, incidental situations and a few work related, I’ve crossed paths with a few “famous or celebrities”, over my lifetime. The “ long stayers” somehow find a way to stay “ human & themselves” and I’d say, are more comfortable with being related to on that basis. The difficulty is in finding their way to that place and graciously interacting with fans who falsely adore “The Artist” over and above simply their creations and invest qualities into the human being who carries “The Name” which may or may never have existed. It’s the cult of celebrity.
You’re right, many have wonderful talents practised daily for which public acclaim will never be awarded.

@@pamelahay6242 I will always be like this, we all matter or should, I don't know if I could handle losing my privacy either, I believe that when we leave our bodies (death) the only things we take with us are our knowledge, our deeds, our personality and especially how we've treated others, being someone who is famous in the eyes of the world, won't help you anymore, although many of the famous do good and are able to keep their lives balanced, I also think that physical beauty is a trial, and we are here to be tried, but it all comes with a price, there are some real nuts out there, like what happened to John Lennon and that young singer, Christine or Christina? Anyway, hope you're having a great 2023 so far, stay safe.

    • @pamelahay6242
      @pamelahay6242 Рік тому

Yes, I think it could, or would be a burden to carry the expectations of others on one’s shoulders every time you step outside your private spaces and try to walk that tightrope of politeness, accessibility etc whilst in public places. I fairly recently had a much feited/ lived singer/ songwriter sit beside me at an airport whilst waiting to catch a flight. I refrained from speaking to him ( figuring he was on his private time ) but the person 2 seats further away asked if they could tske his photo, which he graciously agreed to. I got up and walked away only to have that same said “Celebrity”, walk up to join the flight boarding queue the same time as I. He gestured politrly for me to me to step ahead of him in the line. No vanity or self importance exhibited there. No, he wasn’t “ stalking me”, not with his girlfriend by his side; just coincidental place and timing! 😄

I first saw Upright & was blown away by him & this 15 yr old very plucky gal. I knew this wasn’t the last time I would see either of them. I’ve seen the movie twice more because it makes me laugh, cry & love the whole movie. It will be a classic. Tim will be a classic as well as Milly Alcock. The first scene of the movie was one of the most amazing opening scenes. A car crash with Milly running across the road saying something like “You fuckwog” All Tim could say was “ Are you ok.? “ it turned out she broke her arm & it takes on from there. One of my all time favorite films, next to Silence of the Lambs. Love from Massachusetts 💜
