My son introduced me to White wine in the sun a few Christmases ago. It makes me cry every time I hear it. I've always taken against Christmas but every year we do a big family meal and they all love it. This song has made me realise how important our contribution is to our family and although we're not usually drinking white wine in the sun in south Devon in December, my adult children call our home their happy place and they know that wherever they are in the world, we will always be there.
As a person who was raised in a religious atmosphere, being able to witness the thought processes of men such and these has been an incredible gift to my jour ey over the past few years. Thank you for your soundness and clarity of mind, as well as your dedication to truth.
Tim Minchin is such a profoundly beautiful human being. His stand-up was life changing for 17 year old me. I had never really had access to intellectual thoughts and opinions that matched my own. My circle of friends at the time were more interested in drugs and alcohol than learning about this beautiful (and sometimes appalling) world we live on. Who knows where my life would be without the epiphany this brilliant comedian (plus everything else he has done) gave me. My entire life revolves around science, my work at a medical practice and my hobby as an amateur entomologist and I don't think I would be here without hearing Tim Minchin some 15 years ago, I bought that DVD impulsively, I had seen him do a 5 minute set on TV once, one of the best decisions I've ever made. He's a glorious man, a global treasure who deserves to be adored by everyone.
I enjoyed hearing the maturity and broadness of view of all these speakers. Also that Tim Minchin doesn't see any need to be defined by his earlier creations, noticing that they were created in a certain time of his life. It made me consider that, when listening to someone, we can think about what time or stage of life that person is in, or even the time of life society was in. Worth watching.
I absolutely love how genuine and REAL Minchin is. He's a great counterpoint to Dawkins, who has a privileged professorial viewpoint that allows him to be more unthinkingly cruel, dismissive (I am not actually judging him; no one can escape their own experiences). Minchin is more emotionally aware of the impact of his words on the person right in front of him, and his allegiance is to "making people happy." Dawkins' allegiance is to the harsh light of truth. We need BOTH.
Tim is the hippy atheist ! but i dont understand what you mean about a privileged professional viewpoint regarding Dawkins makes no sense to me ! of course they come from different generations which can lead to different approaches and viewpoints but in no way is Dawkins cruel or dismissive he just seeks the truth and speaks plainly as he finds it no more and no less

Tim is witty Dawkins is dry. Tim comes from an entertainment point of view, Dawkins is used to lecturing. They have different ways of delivering information and for some Dawkins is hard to consume and for others Tim is easily dismissed. Both are perfectly valid and luckily both are very intelligent human beings with interesting things to say 😁
Tim started off by showing what a good bloke he is, with a very simple act.... at an event about him, his first act was to pour glasses of water for everyone on stage. A humble genius!

As a 25 y/o with hopefully still healthy ears and earphones, I still find this a bit too low as well. Can’t listen to it when on the tube bc the background noises easily drown it out.

As a Sri Lankan born atheist now living in Australia I want to answer the question Richard Dawkins asked about why religion is still very strong in Asian countries. I believe it is because of poverty and low levels of education. Most charities in these countries are owned by religious organisations hence people feel grateful for their help and believe it is help coming from god. My mother-in-law who was once in a religious-based hospital said they will do the right thing because it is a Christian hospital. In Sri Lanka they don't teach critical thinking skills and questioning is frowned upon. If you don't believe in God or do not go to church they will ostracise you. There is pressure from family and friends to stay religious and we are always reminded that not going to church will land us in hell. Ayaan said how women in Islamic countries are constantly reminded to follow the teachings of Islam. Well, it is the same in most Asian countries. As long as poverty and low levels of education exist religion will exist in these countries. Religious leaders are also highly influential so politicians will not challenge them.

This was really wonderful: two individuals who have contributed enormously, in such different ways, to a scientific, rationality-based, empirical, secular approach to life, and whose output I have consumed repeatedly over many years. What a treat to see one reward the other! Tim finally got his wish that he'd "rather break bread with Dawkins than with Tutu to be honest"! It's interesting to hear the evolution of Tim's perspective: he's clearly of the same views and intentions, but it's clear he's increasingly uncomfortable in today's socially complex environment with the legacy of material that will make some see him negatively, which he clearly and reasonably struggles with, and wants to have a positive impact, not just on how people think, but also how they feel irrespective of how they think. His comment that he hasn't written material like 'Thank you God' for over 10 years, and that this was ok for a particular time in his life but that it's no longer appropriate at 46, was an interesting and understandable distancing, but sat next to Richard, who has done this relentlessly over a lifetime, was perhaps an awkward juxtaposition. I don't blame Tim, and the two are living through different eras, and have had to manage their different 'circles of influence" through different vehicles, which requires different approaches, I just feel it is sad when, in today's social tinderbox climate, someone like Tim appears to have to apologise for his perspective, and hope it doesn't change his phenomenal output. We stifle such creative geniuses at our collective peril. Anyway, it made him no less deserving a recipient of the CFI award, and I can think of no worthier person, and am happy to just have any opportunity for him to express his fascinating and thoughtful perspectives, in his wonderfully witty, affable, self-deprecating style Congratulations Tim - looking forward to your next creative output, whatever that is.

I absolutely love TM and how he merges poetry, music, comedy into this extraordinary art performance! To articulate himself without compromising a single form is his most powerful skill/tool! Whenever he starts his performance, for me, as I start concentrating on the narrative his use of the music in the background it almost feels as if I'm under some kind of a spell....ironically. He's such a brilliant pianist who is not only using music as a background/stage/performance side effect but his music is integral part of the delivery as he actually uses music to play with viewers cognitive processing. Music in his performances different roles and only if we listen Tim without music it shows how much he's using psychology and is taking viewers through the experience that reveal how masses have been manipulated, controlled and captured by the religious and any other ideological ideaz. I am starting a Cambridge postgraduate teaching English program in January and I can't wait to start teaching topics where using TM material is appropriate to use to help students understand English grammar and literacy! Apart from TM rap music is another from that is perfect for teaching English to foreigners! In addition to being very useful to teach different aspects of the grammar I have experienced a huge shift in students motivation to learn. Not only that it stimulates students to be more engaging during a lesson but their motivation shifts from only trying to pass that requirement but many students delve deeper and start coming up with their own ideas, bring rap songs of their own choosing as an example of how it might be applied to the study of language. Tim's performance of Prejudice is one of my favourite examples!

As a mental health clinician the perspectives about the benefits and harms of internet use / misuse and the Circle of Concern discussion was particularly relevant to both my own interest & to my work. I have had recent discussions with Secondary schools educators who are trying to formulate training modules tailored to topics surrounding safe internet use for teens. My own view is that this should start way earlier, in Primary schools, however, now I want to bring this more broadly centered within the information saturation immobilisation framework . So thank you for that. The other thing that really hits hard - right now - is the international reactions to the War in Ukraine and the selective "Outrage Flagging" through "Likes" attached to various forms of coverage - which give people a sense of 'agency' when in fact Nothing has translated into mobilisation to action.

I had no idea! All I knew of Minchin before this were the comedy routines of his posted on youtube which were funny, odd, and quirky, but gave me no real idea of what a profound thinker he is. If it's any consolation, Mr. M., the Internet has at least introduced me to you!
His comedy should have been a clue to his intellect many of his comedy songs have very clear message and contain complicated language showing how verbose he is. He was privately educated and comes from an intellectual family
I'm an Australian who lived 30 years overseas. Coming back recently I have to say that it's not as "secular" as I remember. I see dangerous comparisons with the US. Even in Australia, the institutions and the real power houses are wrapped up in religion and the Facilitator's comments on retention of privilege in the US are also at play in Australia. It's scary.
Wow. Amazing, a long time fan of Dawkins. I know little about Tim Minchin, but I did download "Cardinal Pell" a few years back and have it on my playlist often. It's like a direct line from piano men (and women) like Sedaka, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Billy Joel, Elton John and Carole King with some biting satire thrown in. Love it. But, after hearing this fascinating insight, I'll definitely be checking out some more of his stuff.

I was surprised nobody said anything about the term “unbelievers”. We are not unbelievers, we are just existing and everyone else is a believer and maybe while right moral are harmful incorrect. That splitting of “right” is a FANTASTIC method reaching people I love who would be hurt by my “beliefs”.

Completely agree with what Tim is saying about tribes, which is why I felt a bit uncomfortable with the way this was introduced. Telling people that if they think certain ways then they should leave felt a bit awkward and really went against the whole purpose of awarding someone for enlightening others. I feel that Tim may have humbled a few people there when he said that.

yes interestingly you have to head into the metal world to find scientific and real world topics discussed in song. Nightwish's last two albums have dealt with the human and scientific world and Sabaton deal regularly with historical and war topics as two examples.
@@mnewm21 As I'm exploring more and more, I am drawn far more to Scandinavian metal than to American/English metal. Not just the music, but the lyrics are often interesting and insightful which, considering many of these who choose to sing in English, is impressive being not their native language!

I've often wondered over the past few years what Tim has been up to as I loved his various shows but he seems to have gone quiet. I guess I need to look into his TV shows. It was absolutely fascinating and moving hearing what is going through his head these days. I think when we talk about regulating social media and the internet it should be a focus on the regulation of algorithms. The issues surrounding freedom of speech are more difficult, I think, than the issues surrounding "Should Facebook have the ability to tweak their algorithm in order to affect an election?" If the algorithms can be tweaked to create an echo chamber; I believe there should be a way they can be tweaked to display more diverse information.

When you claim it came from a god you can’t show exists, you’re the one arguing it came from nothing. Can you offer an example,of “nothing” so or can be tested? Of course not. Tim Minchin is such a profoundly beautiful human being.
His stand-up was life changing for 17 year old me. I had never really had access to intellectual thoughts and opinions that matched my own. My circle of friends at the time were more interested in drugs and alcohol than learning about this beautiful (and sometimes appalling) world we live on. Who knows where my life would be without the epiphany this brilliant comedian (plus everything else he has done) gave me. My entire life revolves around science, my work at a medical practice and my hobby as an amateur entomologist and I don't think I would be here without hearing Tim Minchin some 15 years ago, I bought that DVD impulsively, I had seen him do a 5 minute set on TV once, one of the best decisions I've ever made.
He's a glorious man, a global treasure who deserves to be adored by everyone.
Congratulations Tim, well deserved award.
I enjoyed hearing the maturity and broadness of view of all these speakers. Also that Tim Minchin doesn't see any need to be defined by his earlier creations, noticing that they were created in a certain time of his life. It made me consider that, when listening to someone, we can think about what time or stage of life that person is in, or even the time of life society was in. Worth watching.
I absolutely love how genuine and REAL Minchin is. He's a great counterpoint to Dawkins, who has a privileged professorial viewpoint that allows him to be more unthinkingly cruel, dismissive (I am not actually judging him; no one can escape their own experiences). Minchin is more emotionally aware of the impact of his words on the person right in front of him, and his allegiance is to "making people happy." Dawkins' allegiance is to the harsh light of truth. We need BOTH.

@@stevenaustin8274 I think it is the different method chosen for delivery of ideas. Tim is more conversational in his delivery whereas Dawkins is more authoritative in his. Tim is witty Dawkins is dry. Tim comes from an entertainment point of view, Dawkins is used to lecturing. They have different ways of delivering information and for some Dawkins is hard to consume and for others Tim is easily dismissed. Both are perfectly valid and luckily both are very intelligent human beings with interesting things to say 😁
Tim started off by showing what a good bloke he is, with a very simple act.... at an event about him, his first act was to pour glasses of water for everyone on stage. A humble genius!

As a Sri Lankan born atheist now living in Australia I want to answer the question Richard Dawkins asked about why religion is still very strong in Asian countries. I believe it is because of poverty and low levels of education. Most charities in these countries are owned by religious organisations hence people feel grateful for their help and believe it is help coming from god. My mother-in-law who was once in a religious-based hospital said they will do the right thing because it is a Christian hospital. In Sri Lanka they don't teach critical thinking skills and questioning is frowned upon. If you don't believe in God or do not go to church they will ostracise you. There is pressure from family and friends to stay religious and we are always reminded that not going to church will land us in hell. Ayaan said how women in Islamic countries are constantly reminded to follow the teachings of Islam. Well, it is the same in most Asian countries. As long as poverty and low levels of education exist religion will exist in these countries. Religious leaders are also highly influential so politicians will not challenge them.
I dare say you may just have answered your own question. There is a lot of power behind the religious when it comes to those who are forced to depend on them.

Two of my all time favorite people, Dawkins and Minchin, on the same stage at the same time. I never thought this would happen but I'm glad it did.
I haven't heard of Tim before, but listening to them both talk I think I rather like his ideas and I'm grateful that I was able to watch this to know of him

This was really wonderful: two individuals who have contributed enormously, in such different ways, to a scientific, rationality-based, empirical, secular approach to life, and whose output I have consumed repeatedly over many years. What a treat to see one reward the other! Tim finally got his wish that he'd "rather break bread with Dawkins than with Tutu to be honest"! It's interesting to hear the evolution of Tim's perspective: he's clearly of the same views and intentions, but it's clear he's increasingly uncomfortable in today's socially complex environment with the legacy of material that will make some see him negatively, which he clearly and reasonably struggles with, and wants to have a positive impact, not just on how people think, but also how they feel irrespective of how they think. His comment that he hasn't written material like 'Thank you God' for over 10 years, and that this was ok for a particular time in his life but that it's no longer appropriate at 46, was an interesting and understandable distancing, but sat next to Richard, who has done this relentlessly over a lifetime, was perhaps an awkward juxtaposition. I don't blame Tim, and the two are living through different eras, and have had to manage their different 'circles of influence" through different vehicles, which requires different approaches, I just feel it is sad when, in today's social tinderbox climate, someone like Tim appears to have to apologise for his perspective, and hope it doesn't change his phenomenal output. We stifle such creative geniuses at our collective peril. Anyway, it made him no less deserving a recipient of the CFI award, and I can think of no worthier person, and am happy to just have any opportunity for him to express his fascinating and thoughtful perspectives, in his wonderfully witty, affable, self-deprecating style Congratulations Tim - looking forward to your next creative output, whatever that is.

Why was it recorded at such a low volume? I needed to turn it all the way up for it to be at a proper level. Lucky there were no commercials as one would have jumped out of one's skin.
I absolutely love TM and how he merges poetry, music, comedy into this extraordinary art performance!
To articulate himself without compromising a single form is his most powerful skill/tool!
Whenever he starts his performance, for me, as I start concentrating on the narrative his use of the music in the background it almost feels as if I'm under some kind of a spell....ironically.
He's such a brilliant pianist who is not only using music as a background/stage/performance side effect but his music is integral part of the delivery as he actually uses music to play with viewers cognitive processing. Music in his performances different roles and only if we listen Tim without music it shows how much he's using psychology and is taking viewers through the experience that reveal how masses have been manipulated, controlled and captured by the religious and any other ideological ideaz.
I am starting a Cambridge postgraduate teaching English program in January and I can't wait to start teaching topics where using TM material is appropriate to use to help students understand English grammar and literacy!
Apart from TM rap music is another from that is perfect for teaching English to foreigners! In addition to being very useful to teach different aspects of the grammar I have experienced a huge shift in students motivation to learn.
Not only that it stimulates students to be more engaging during a lesson but their motivation shifts from only trying to pass that requirement but many students delve deeper and start coming up with their own ideas, bring rap songs of their own choosing as an example of how it might be applied to the study of language.
Tim's performance of Prejudice is one of my favourite examples!

So many brilliant insights. As a mental health clinician the perspectives about the benefits and harms of internet use / misuse and the Circle of Concern discussion was particularly relevant to both my own interest & to my work. I have had recent discussions with Secondary schools educators who are trying to formulate training modules tailored to topics surrounding safe internet use for teens. My own view is that this should start way earlier, in Primary schools, however, now I want to bring this more broadly centered within the information saturation immobilisation framework . So thank you for that.
The other thing that really hits hard - right now - is the international reactions to the War in Ukraine and the selective "Outrage Flagging" through "Likes" attached to various forms of coverage - which give people a sense of 'agency' when in fact Nothing has translated into mobilisation to action.
Also remind students there are health issues with overuse. L,m suffering by really sore neck for a month with 8hrs of utube per day.
I am a huge fan of Tim Minchin... his music, acting, songwriting etc. To hear him speak on an intellectual level is just as wonderful and for some reason, he makes me wish I was Australian....lol. Congratulations Tim !

I had no idea! All I knew of Minchin before this were the comedy routines of his posted on youtube which were funny, odd, and quirky, but gave me no real idea of what a profound thinker he is. If it's any consolation, Mr. M., the Internet has at least introduced me to you!
His comedy should have been a clue to his intellect many of his comedy songs have very clear message and contain complicated language showing how verbose he is. He was privately educated and comes from an intellectual family

I'm an Australian who lived 30 years overseas. Coming back recently I have to say that it's not as "secular" as I remember. I see dangerous comparisons with the US. Even in Australia, the institutions and the real power houses are wrapped up in religion and the Facilitator's comments on retention of privilege in the US are also at play in Australia. It's scary.

Wow. Amazing, a long time fan of Dawkins. I know little about Tim Minchin, but I did download "Cardinal Pell" a few years back and have it on my playlist often.
It's like a direct line from piano men (and women) like Sedaka, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Billy Joel, Elton John and Carole King with some biting satire thrown in. Love it.

Completely agree with what Tim is saying about tribes, which is why I felt a bit uncomfortable with the way this was introduced. Telling people that if they think certain ways then they should leave felt a bit awkward and really went against the whole purpose of awarding someone for enlightening others. I feel that Tim may have humbled a few people there when he said that.

yes interestingly you have to head into the metal world to find scientific and real world topics discussed in song. Nightwish's last two albums have dealt with the human and scientific world and Sabaton deal regularly with historical and war topics as two examples.
@@mnewm21 As I'm exploring more and more, I am drawn far more to Scandinavian metal than to American/English metal. Not just the music, but the lyrics are often interesting and insightful which, considering many of these who choose to sing in English, is impressive being not their native language!

That was really moving. It's wonderful as always to see Richard Dawkins. I've often wondered over the past few years what Tim has been up to as I loved his various shows but he seems to have gone quiet. I guess I need to look into his TV shows. It was absolutely fascinating and moving hearing what is going through his head these days. What an insightful dialog and I can't thank everyone involved enough for putting this on and making it available to the world.

Richard Dawkins teaches the universe came from "literally nothing."
Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space, and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it.
We can't get anything from "literally nothing." We can't even get science without God. The laws of nature only can come from a Lawgiver, God.
Tim mostly writes musicals now, thats why you dont see him doing comedy shows any more.

I think when we talk about regulating social media and the internet it should be a focus on the regulation of algorithms. The issues surrounding freedom of speech are more difficult, I think, than the issues surrounding "Should Facebook have the ability to tweak their algorithm in order to affect an election?" If the algorithms can be tweaked to create an echo chamber; I believe there should be a way they can be tweaked to display more diverse information.
Tim Minchin made me think of this years ago:
- It’s stupid to make simple issues more complex than they are.
- It’s evil to try to give the illusion that a simple issue is complex.
- It’s dangerous to try to simplify truly complex things.
English isn’t my native language so I hope the idea was translated well.

As a “Jewish” American, I just wanted to find out who wrote the amazing music and lyrics the Netflix version of Matilda and myself being in the business how do I not know this person. I’ve now listened to everything he’s done. He’s a piano virtuoso and unfortunately he was caught up in the Comcast purchasing of NBC and I would kill to hear that soundtrack. Also a fan of Dawkins and Harris, sometimes you just don’t know what you’ll find.
I thought I was his number one fan Peter and I’ll take 2. 😂

Actually, the model for the Big Bang shows the universe came from a singularity, based on evidence.
When you claim it came from a god you can’t show exists, you’re the one arguing it came from nothing.
Can you offer an example,of “nothing” so or can be tested? Of course not.
Of energy cannot be created or destroyed, has energy always existed?
The laws of nature are descriptive. Not prescriptive. Nuance matters.
