What I loved the most about this quote is the fact that he used the word BY instead of WITH. As if the chairs are entities instead of objects. Like invaders taking up his personal space. Just found it to be a very subtle, witty Tim Minchin thing to say.
Don't love him, emulate him. Or do both. Stop wishing for more people like him and be one of them. Another cliche but Actions speak louder than words. Absorb that, sit with it for a couple of minutes. It will change your life if you see it for what it is.
What I loved about this is about being Kind. I am an educator on an anti bullying team. I wish I had you talking about this in general terms Tim to show to our high school students. Here is a successful person who is kind and advocates the value of kindness. That is worth so much to the world.
Think it was his other video, where he gives 9 life lessons or whatever ? He explains how he actually judges some of the people he works with based upon how they treat the waiters.. just an all around amazing guy ~
He might add "Being a friggin genius doesn't hurt your chances." He's a good case for studying the classics - literature, philosophy, history, music - and then applying them all to a trade. One can see his knowledge of these things supporting his comedic talents, putting him on a different plane than most of those considered his peers.
My daughter worked in the arts field in a front of house job and I always remember her coming home and telling me what a " lovely, kind and warm person Tim is. You always walk the talk Tim, and that is extraordinary. Thankyou for being kind to my daughter.
Few artists will speak at commencement ceremonies. They aren't glamorous. They are often tedious and require you to sit through the graduation of hundreds of strangers. Tim, however, speaks often, especially at his alma mater(s). What matters to him is how young people are launched into their careers. His remarks are works of art. He plainly invests much time, thought, and heart into crafting his words of advice. Those words are as sensible and practical as they are lyrical. In everything he says you can hear the rhythm of the artist. If you saw Tim on the street, with his shaggy hair, beard, and unusual clothes, and if you did not know who he was, you would probably not guess that he is a brilliant, artistic humanist, with a love of family and a heart of gold. The man is awesome.
Thank you. This is something I really needed to hear; I've been practicing art for 21 years, and I've only just recently believed my work is worth being sold. I think your words were the final push I needed to start showing the world what I can do, because I'm the best at being me ❤
I’m not artistically inclined in any of the ways that Tim rambled through in this speech. I’m sort of a scientist, I played at being a pharmacist for 30 years. And much of the advice Tim offered was perfectly suited to my career. Most of what he said is just good advice on how to be a good human being. We need more of those.
What this man says resonates with my entire career, even though I am a retired scientist; but never in a thousand lifetimes could I express them better. The world needs more Tim Minchin.
At freshman orientation, one of the professors in a group lecture accidentally said "if you can live without being a musician, you shouldn't be here." The other professors quickly jumped in to silence her - she'd just told the customers not to buy the product if they don't really need it. But she was absolutely right. One by one, as the next four years passed, all the students that were there because they didn't know what else to do, or because their parents had convinced them to be there, or because they just wanted to express themselves and weren't interested in technique - they all left. Sometimes I wish I'd left, too. But music was never a choice for me. I've been a professional for over thirty years now, and sometimes I still wish I was good at something that makes more money. But I'm here, I've survived. I've worked with amazing talents, made such astonishing art that, if I never sing again, I can die proud. It didn't make me famous, it didn't make me rich, it didn't win me friends. Most of my friends don't even know or care that I sing. But I have the respect of my musical peers, and I have self-respect because, like Tim, I am the best at what I do. I'm the best at being me. And I just wish it hadn't taken me so long to realize the truth of his words.
I have just started uni, psychology not arts, but this advice resonated very strongly with me regardless. I'm terrified of how this might go, but it doesn't matter because I'm already the best at what I do! What a legend. Be good to each other team
Thank you. I just graduated and got into a field where no one realistically makes any money, but I love this field. Even if I already knew it all deep down I really needed to hear what you said. Thank you Tim
If there's any single one person that can speak from one's soul, it is Tim. Thank you for being genuine and kind...always. Your soul speaks to the depths of mine.
Being kind to the crew is the best advice! If you are kind we (the crew in black) will (most of us) bend over backwards and go the extra mile to make you shine this little bit more (or just make your life a little easier). If you are a pr!#k... harder for all
Honorary Doctorates are the least honor-ish-ly thing going around. I'm surprised Tim actually bothered accepting it. But hey, it's another chance to hear this man talk, so I'm all ears.
Thank you Tim, for your uplifting and entertaining wander down memory lane, and advice for those who, like you, choose to take the road less travelled. I loved the emphasis on authenticity and kindness delivered in Tim's usual gracious, witty and perspicacious way. Be yourself, because everyone else is taken and in the end, only kindness matters. In a world where you can be anything, be kind.
This could be four hours long and I still wouldn't press pause to get a drink, run to pee, have a quick ciggie or stir my spaghetti sauce I would be planted in my chair just listening. PS....when does the extended version come out?
Congrats to tim, having such success and a career that allows him to do what he enjoys for the most part and to get an honorary degree means that you mean a lot. Then I'm here enjoying all the wins and inspirational moments of these great speeches.
Tim Minchin is such a shining example of what 'being' a human 'being'... is. We are inherently born to be social and to share ideas. We find a cause to live and the only barrier to this is always the jealousy of others who don't want to make the effort to be a better human being tomorrow, than you were today.
When Tim put Tim first, and out there; People loved Tim. And Tim loved Tim, though not as much as the fans loved Tim. Now both fans and Tim love Tim so much, other people, strangers to Tim, love Tim also. The love of Tim May one day disrupt the rotation of Earth if distributed evenly around the globe. Help Tim save the planet by listening and laughing at silly things...
When I thought I couldn't like this guy more, he throws a HIMYM reference iin the middle of this speech and... Gosh you are awesome!!!. Hope one day I'll be able to watch one of your shows live, greetings from Argentina!!
As a Yank, it seems that my countrymen have completely given up on the entire concept of kindness. I stumbled across Tim on youTube and have been following him for years now. I'm so glad to hear him talk about kindness. I think it may be too late for my country at this particular juncture, but it's nice to see that it really isn't the entire world that's out-of-sync.
I think I have figured out which voicing he is talking about at ~ 4:34. In C-Major, if we take the voicing E,F,A,B, then those notes are: 1. the 13, b7, 9 and 3 of Gdom13 2. the 9, b3, 5 and 6 of Dm6/9 3. the #9, 3, #5 and b7 of a Db dom#5#9 and 4. the 7,1,3 and #11 of a Fj7#11 :) what's cool is that you can do a diatonic IV-II-V-bII7-I without ever changing the upper structure of the chord (except for the resolution to I), e.g. Fj7#11 - Dm6/9 - G13 - Db7#5#9 - C6 :)

I've been thinking of becoming a voice actor for the past few years now. A professional at a panel on that industry at Tennocon last year said much the same thing: be proud of your voice. I get it, now. Thank you, Tim, and Nef Anyo.

True.
Like everything Tim does, this little talk is worth listening to over and over and over.
He might add "Being a friggin genius doesn't hurt your chances." He's a good case for studying the classics - literature, philosophy, history, music - and then applying them all to a trade. One can see his knowledge of these things supporting his comedic talents, putting him on a different plane than most of those considered his peers.

Tim's a great argument for cloning.
vigwig Cloning, sadly, doesn't clone personality.
The solution is never _external_ but always **internal.**
