I want to tell you that this video comparing the chalk paints, is fantastic. I appreciate all the work and organization that required. I'm wondering if acrylic paints will work in place of wall paint? I have a huge supply of Golden and LiquiTex paints, and I'd love to use them, but not at the expense of the outcome. Many thanks! *posted this on your blog, subscribed, liked, and chose to be notified of future videos
Okay this is the best comparison video yet! It includes the diy that I think everyone starts out with. I did. And even though I've now tried the big brands always go back to the diy paint using Marquee paint by Behr. Especially for black. The big names just don't cut it! ty for your hard work!!!!
This video is a punk rock masterpiece. What a rollicking AND informative good time! I'm planning my first chalk paint project and now I know what paint to use. Well done.
Thank you. One of the best paints I ever used was a DIY chalk paint I made using OOPS paint and a chalk additive. The adhesion was superb and the finish was the smoothest I've ever had. Very revealing results!
I have definitely seen that your test have proved true to what I have seen. And one of my favorites is the DIY which makes it easier to make or find any color you are looking for and if I can’t find the exact color that I am looking for I add a few drops of the inexpensive acrylic hobby paints that you can pick up anywhere. The big brand I started with mostly recommends wax as the sealer. I painted my kitchen cabinets and here just a couple of years later it looks terrible. There is one brand that I really like because of all of their coastal colors and it scored ok, but nice to know the paint I have been making myself is actually better.
Fantastic thank you! Because of the cost I've been hesitant to even try any of these chalk paints - now I know. AND I thoroughly enjoyed your "animations" - needed a laugh and smile today :)
Well done! You certainly did do a most thorough job. Very scientific. I hope in your future endeavors, that it pays off for you. Thank you so much for sharing your results. 👍💞
Thank you. That was a heck of a lot of work! I previously purchased calcium carbonate to make a DIY chalk paint but never got around to it. Will definitely be giving it a try now after your results.
This was an awesome video! Thank you for all the time, effort, and expense you endured to compare all these brands of paint. Seems like DIY may be the way to go!
Thank you so much for this time consuming hard work to figure out the best paint. I am very new to this and need help badly. I am working on small crafts, plastic, glass, metal and wood with Iron Orchid moulds and I wonder what paint I would substitute with your DIY recipe because I obviously don't need large quantities like when you do for furniture. Could you use craft paints like Americana or Delta then use wax, and gilding paste ? Any advice would be appreciated.
I truly appreciate all the time and energy you spent on this. Given the results, do you prefer Waverly and/or your DIY? Or is there another brand, despite these test results, that you perfer?
This was an extremely helpful video. I have been collecting various pieces to paint and sell but wasn’t sure which paints to purchase. I know now though😀😀 Thank you so much for all your hard work…and expense. I am so glad I found your channel and have certainly subscribed and given you a thumbs up. Cheers from Australia. 💕👍💕
That was so fun! (I'm such a nerd!) LOL. Just found you and you gained a new subbie! Thank you for doing all those tests. I sure couldnt believe the results!
I make my own chalk paint with a really high quality acrylic paint and plaster of Paris. Smooth creamy and covers well . I use a damp sanding block after every coat and then seal with wax or clear coat. Smooth as glass. Easy to work with !
I make my own, too. Have gone back yo plaster of Paris with a titch of calcium carbonate. Now add a bit of floetrol so I don’t have to worry about brush msrks
Thanks for sharing! Of course, the recipe I used was not made with plaster of Paris. But isn't it nice to know how it compares with the expensive brands? I was surprised how smooth it was without any added water. I may try Roberta's suggestion below with a little bit of floetrol. Are you using craft acrylic paint?
Thanks Roberta I am going to try the floetrol. I have SOOOO much calcium carbonate that I will only be using that for awhile. I think I bought 10 pounds from Amazon!
Thank you for this video. This was exactly what I was looking for. I’m curious if the results from your diy paint are due to using a quality latex paint? Do you remember what type it was?
Well my goodness! The amount of work that you went to in making this video. I truly appreciate how much time it must’ve taken and I also appreciate your unbiassed information. Thank you so much for this. I only wish I had subscribed to your channel before I bought so many different kinds of chalk paint. I could’ve save myself some money. I’m bingeing my way through your videos. Peers and since my last video that I watched it has not warmed up here on the East Coast of Canada. Cold 🥶
Thank you so much! I am glad it was helpful. It WAS a lot of work to do the tests and to do the video but I have received a lot of positive comments (like yours) and that makes it all worthwhile! Keep warm!
Thank you, thank you, and thank you., That was lots of work. I have just started my journey, why chalk paint and when? I love UA-cam videos like yours that add value.
This is a great video and very informative. I'm just looking into using chalk paint for my husband's old toy chest. I want to make it "farmhouse" vs the standard stain and poly I've done in the past I really appreciate all your hard work on this!!
I bet you did great ag the science fair 😊 this was such a great video! I loved everything about it and appreciate your time and effort because you have helped a lot people.
You were not boring in anyway and i liked your encouragement throught the video! It was funny and well timed! You were very thorough and informative! Great video! Subscribed!
I’m very surprised at how my go to chalk paint scored, I have used it for years and have never had any issues with it, I even painted my kitchen cabinets with it and it’s held up beautifully
Glad to hear you are happy with it. However, there may be something even better out there. That is why I did the video. I wanted to use the best and most reasonable priced paint for my flips. It does not appear that I need to spend $40 per quart on paint when I can just use DIY paint for about $3.00 per quart!
I really really appreciate all the work you went through to test these paints. If I am not painting furniture but craft small pieces using Iron Orchid moulds what kind of paint could I add to DIY recipe. Would a craft paint like Americana or Delta paint work in the recipe. Thanks
Glad it was helpful! Can you believe how good the DIY recipe came out? Wow! Total game changer for me! Please subscribe and you will be notified when I release my next video. I am currently testing all in one paints.
Annie Sloan has to be the MOST heavily marketed chalk paints, she has tons of paid YT paint pushers, it is amazing. Hi Cindy. So glad it was helpful I love the diy chalk paint recipe in this video!!! Please give it a thumbs up to show UA-cam that it is a good video and has value. thanks!
Hi. I very much appreciated all you hard work and diligence in creating this comparison test. I have a question about removing colored lacquer. It’s grey lacquer on a wooden chair. I’d like to know what in your experience has been the best lacquer remover. I would appreciate a response at your convenience. Thank you.
Hi I did not use a sealer on any of the chalk paints so they were all equal. Yes, I always apply a sealer on a finished piece of furniture that has been chalk painted
Thanks for the video, it was very informative. Dumb question. you didn't seal any of them with wax... do you ever use chalk paint without sealing it with wax?
I tested them without any sealer so I could compare apples to apples. I never seal furniture I am selling with wax because my clients do not want to have to do any maintenance to the furniture they purchase from me. You have to reapply wax every 6 months. You must always seal chalk paint with poly urethane etc or wax. You cannot use it with out a sealer or wax. thanks for watching!

The thing is you want your chalk paint to distress easily with a wet T-shirt that’s the whole point of using a chalk paint so it should’ve been given a higher mark for easily distressing I think

Great video. Love all the details and your editing. Thank you so much.
Thanks so much!
Thank you for spending the money on these products so we don't have to!! The advertising is so tempting and this is so helpful!
Thank you for doing this test. It has really helped me make better paint decisions.
I am so glad it helped! That is why I did it. I do not mind paying more if I GET MORE for my money but that is not the case with chalk paint.

I would use quik strip or kleen strip. I believe it will remove lacquer with no problem.

Chalk paint must be protected by a wax or top coat. Did you test before or after a top coat?
