    The mountains are calling and I must go. My love for NC goes back to my childhood. The Blue Ridge is God's country. You can turn a curve and see a whole new world around each one. Thank you for this video.

    There is another river that runs through Swain County that is not even mentioned in the video. The Nantahala and the Tuckaseegee are tributaries of the Little Tennessee and supply less than half of its more than 5000 cu ft per minute flow. The Little Tennessee starts in the mountains of North Georgia, completely crosses North Carolina and empties into the Tennessee below Calderwood Dam. The Little Tennessee and its free flowing upper portions are mostly ignored by the tourism industry. But that's OK. Those who live there or who visit there are spared the peering eyes of outsiders looking for the Snuffy Smiths they believe us all to be.
    I grew up in Swain County and am proud of it. I am not so proud of it's pretentious county seat Bryson City. I often say "Yeah, I am from Bryson City. As far from it as I can get!"

      I'm looking to move to Swain county because I want to live in the most rural of western NC places. Where in Swain county would you recommend(not in town) I the most secluded? Any help would be appreciated.

      @@klwthe3rd Look for Needmore, Wesser Creek and Silvermine Creek. Wesser and Silvermine Creeks empty in the Nantahala River near the Outdoor Center which are a hive of activity during the summer canoe season but farther up the creeks is much more secluded. Needmore is along and on both sides of the Little Tennessee. Most of the land along the river is public land but up the creeks that feed it is privately owned. Maple Springs, Wiggins Creek, Licklog Creek and Rattlesnake Creek on the western side of the river are places to look for. On the eastern side are Sawmill Creek, Brush Creek and more. Those places mentioned on the west side are up against the Nantahala National Forest. Just a hike away. If you are old enough to remember, the Nantahala National Forest is where Eric Rudolph eluded Federal Law enforcement for years. It's almost a wilderness!
      About 2/3 of Swain County is occupied by the Smoky Mountains National and most of the rest is public land. That is why there are so few people living there. The Federal and State governments pay no county tax so local services are few. A big portion of the county's jobs are involved with tourist and it is seasonal resulting in Swain being one of the poorest counties in the state.

      @@papaw5405 Wow! Thank you so much for such valuable information. I had my search narrowed down to Graham & Swain counties but wasn't sure which one would be more sparse, secluded and remote from most people. With the Harrahs hotel and casino located near there, I was afraid that there would be a huge influx of people. I do remember the Eric Rudolph incident well but I don't recall the authorities divulging the towns near his location. I am very anti government and want to move to an area where I will have peace and not bureaucrats telling me what to do. But what scares me is that so many rich people seem to be moving into these counties and building million dollar homes. I need a county that is the poorest so as to avoid those obnoxious people. I'm going to drive up to that region soon so I can go through each town and get a feel for area. I don't want to live in town but I might need to visit it monthly for supplies. Thank you again for taking time to help me.

      Not many people know about the "Road to Nowhere"! It's an interesting story, and would make a good "day trip" [during the right season]!!

    I wish that you had used a local not a transplant - Someone born and raised in the area - only then do you truly know the residents Land local language - someone with that southern mountain accent

    • @michaelgcrist
      @michaelgcrist Рік тому

      I think Ashley did a fine job! She is NOT a transplant!! She is a "Carolina Girl", who consciously decided to "escape" from the large urban areas, and return to a much simpler lifestyle, that she remembered from her childhood. She is obviously welcomed among the "locals", and NOT considered an outsider! She has embraced their culture and heritage, and now shares that experience with others. Her "spirit" was calling her home to this vast and somewhat remote "wilderness" that still exists in this part of Western North Carolina. She has apparently been "adopted" by locals, as a member of their extended family. This is a true sign of respect and admiration. I envy her ability to actualize this dream of returning to a simpler -- yet wholesome way of life. I hope one day to call her both neighbor & friend!

      @@michaelgcrist Yes I agree - she did a great job - But I would not consider her from here - is she was born in our area she would have our southern mountain - Appalachian accent - she doesn’t - but that doesn’t mean is locals don’t like her - it’s just if your going to show a area - show the real representation of us - language - and all
