I just wanted to thank you for these videos, as someone who had never travelled outside of the US, your videos helped make Ireland our favorite country out of the 7 we visited. My wife and I talk about going back almost daily, we LOVED your country and the people in it.
Such a confusing comment , so you haven’t been outside of the US, but you and you’re wife have visited 7 countries , and talk about going back to Ireland daily. You are aware that Ireland is outside of the United States ?
This just warms my heart to read. A big thank you from both me and Ciara for the feedback. It is great to know that our videos gave you a small bit of inspiration to get the most out of your Ireland trip.
@@AdventuresInQuietPlaces Well it was truly appreciated! Thanks John! This is one of those hikes that was set-up about 10-15 years ago in an effort to offer more options for tourists who are into hiking. Then it got neglected for the longest time. And lo and behold, as I was revisiting the site this past week, all of a sudden it got revamped! New sign posts, the lot! Was very impressed with whomever did that!
We just got home yesterday. It was beautiful in May. Mostly sunny.. some rain. Driving on the left (a stick) is crazy! Horseback riding in Killarney. Cliffs closer to Kinsale. (Driving in Kinsale is nuts!) We didnt get any flies.
Nice! 17 March is the 'official opening' of the Tourist season, with St. Patrick's Day, so all sites should be open and ready to give you the best time!
There's nowhere quite like Kerry. I grew up in Dublin but spent many a family holiday there. I love how it feels like a different world from the rest of Ireland, I can't put my finger on why. Maybe it's the edge of Europe feel, thousands of kms to America and although Ireland is a small country, it would take you hours to drive to Limerick or Cork cities, let alone Dublin. Its one of my happy places.
Clonmel? She must be singing _ "It's a long, long way to Tipperary"_ all the time. Sorry - couldn't resist the opportunity you gave me there :) I really hope you enjoyed both this drive and the visit to Ireland. Thanks for leaving a comment!
I see that you have a walking stick. Do you recommend having one? My aunt, my friend, and I are going to Ireland in April and we're doing the Ring of Kerry. Trying to be as prepared as possible.
That's actually a really good point. This video was taken just south of the Ring of Kerry, and I'm specifically going 'off road'. The stops on the Ring of Kerry are not this 'adventurous' and are well pathed/paved - so no walking stick needed. If you are planning to go off the beaten path anywhere in Ireland than a hiking pole is really advised. There is an enormous amount of bog land here, even on mountain sides. With the amount of rain we get, that means it is *always* slippery. Even after a 3 week dry spell. So, it depends. If you are asking about the Ring of Kerry - almost all stops there are tourist orientated and do not *need* a walking stick. If you are going anywhere more adventurous and off the beaten path - a walking stick is highly advised. But again, it depends what you are going to be up to. I might have repeated myself a couple of times there, but hope that helps.
talking about stone forts , you didn't do your home work before you made this video , one of the finest stone forts in all Ireland is located just outside the village of castlcove , its called the Staigue Fort
Thanks for commenting Jim! I think there might have been a slight miscommunication going on. I don't think I ever mentioned Stone Forts in the video (please correct me if I'm wrong). Rather, I was talking about Stone Circles for tip 2. Indeed, there are many, many Stone Forts, ring forts, cashels on the Kerry peninsula and Staigue Fort is not to be missed as part of your visit. It is part of our video here, at the 13:01 minute mark: ua-cam.com/video/9f22fb-A4Zo/v-deo.html There, consider my home work done and dusted :) Thanks again for commenting and engaging!
I’m thinking of walking the ring of Kerry this May. Are there places to stay along the way that aren’t extremely expensive, like hostels ? If there are hostels will they be open in May?
That is quite the adventure you are up to, Marilyn! Don't worry, I've got your back! Google the following keyword: 'The Kerry Way'. This is the name of the hiking trail that follows the Ring of Kerry, all round the peninsula. It has its own websites and YES, there are some hostels and BnBs on tje way that are cheaper. As far as I know, in both the Black Valley and in Kenmare there are hostels and there are cheaper BnBs all along the Kerry Way that specifically cater to hikers. Hope that helps and that you have a great hike. May is perhaps THE best month to do the hike in, with good weather and spring colors all around. Keep me posted how you found the hike!
I did the trip on a tour bus; in fact, I've never driven in Europe at all. I don't need the stress. I was there in June, 2022- the weather was perfect all eight days I was in the country.
Great idea to take a bus. I rented a car. It was terrifying! It took me three days to be more comfortable and really enjoy it! Most of the roads are only wide enough for one car to drive comfortably.😅
The Irish tan is for the people with the Irish gene, you go bright red, a few days of stinging, then your skin falls off and then you are white again. Yes I do have it.😁☘
Having not long visited that area, can I just say don't plan a visit to the Berra peninsula or the Ring of Kerry during the Bank Holiday at the beginning of May. They hold a motor rally during that weekend and close off a lot of the roads for the Rally Stages. Plus, Killarney was absolutely packed solid on Saturday & Sunday with idiots revving their engines and holding them on the rev limiter all night long (maybe they think it attracts girls). But don't let that put you off visiting any other time of the year. Ireland is a beautiful place to visit.
Thanks Gilles, glad you enjoyed! Nope, I'm an immigrant (fiancee is Irish) who is darned lucky that the Kerry people haven't kicked me out yet. Truly blessed to be able to live here, and share my adventures amongst all of this nature and these ancient monuments!

@@gillesdanneel7184 Yes, over the weekend of 23-25 April, Killarney National Park has been hit by pretty bad forest fires. I've gone down to check today. I'll try to have a video out tomorrow. Short story of my first impressions: The size of the fires and devastation is pretty bad, in amount of forest lost. However, due to the layout of the National Park, the places where the tourists go hike and drive the Ring of Kerry are minimally affected. Which is an absolute miracle. Those are the first impressions. More tomorrow. Thanks for checking in!
The mountains of kerry would be comparable to welsh mountains, but not scotland. For example snowdonia and wales has 15 monroes kerry has 13 monroes and snowdon is only 100 ft higher than carantuohil.Lastly i would say though i am not a fan of forestry plantations kerry or any other part of rural ireland is not solely a tourist theme parks.
😂😂😂 I live here in Kerry, lucky to be overlooking the highest Mountains and Castlemaine bay. The whole place is nothing but tourists for the whole of the summer -dreadful!
