You can find it here: facebook.com/Lord-Brandons-Cottage-102389995210420/ As I happened to be in the neighborhood this week, I dropped by and asked their opening times on your behalf. Keeping in mind that 2021 is a somewhat weird year for them, they told me that usually, their opening times in non-COVID periods are: MAR-OCT, 10am-4:30pm. Ferry runs seasonally from April to October. You can prebook tickets on their website, here: www.valentiaferry.com/. However, you can also just get them on the Ferry itself. We are coming from America and are going to drive the Ring of Kerry and Skellig Ring in one day in the middle of May 2022 (would love to take more time but our schedule didn't allow it). I've heard it's best to drive the Ring clock wise because the tour busses go counter clock wise (so you won't get stuck behind them). Is that true?
May is a great month to do the Ring of Kerry - Rhodondendrons are in bloom, not too many toursists around just yet, fresh new green leaves on the trees and the weather is generally really good! To answer your question, check out this video I did. Specifically tip 6 goes into the clockwise vs anticlockwise question: ua-cam.com/video/R3lx4vMl8NE/v-deo.html The TL;DR is that if you can leave before 9AM (preferably 8AM) from Killarney, you will be ahead of the tour buses, and can definitely still do anticlockwise. If you are later, consider doing clockwise instead (going into the direction of Torc Waterfall and Ladies View first). But in reality, both options are great, and it is not the biggest deal driving behind the tour buses. The bigger issue is that you will be surrounded by tourists coming out of those tour buses at the most touristy spots. Something to keep in mind. If you get the chance, also consider going to the little brother of the Ring of Kerry, which is the Ring of Beara, just to the South. The roads are even smaller, so no tour buses - thus far less tourists. We did a video on it recently. The recommendation to keep driving after Gap of Dunloe and continue through the Black Valley to Lord Brandon's Cottage was excellent, thank you! This was the highlight on our single day driving the Ring.
Not a weird question, actually a really good question. Ireland, tourists and shoes are often... a bit of a mismatch. On the Ring of Kerry, almost all locations are well paved/pathed. So, you can get away with sneakers. However, if you are planning on doing *anything* off the beaten path outside of the Ring of Kerry, anything slightly more out of the way, not as touristy, seen in a instagram picture or tourist book, but no big tourbuses stop there... bring waterproof shoes. Not water resistant. Water *proof*. With the amount of bogland we have.and rain we get, the ground is *always* wet - even in the height of summer. If you are planning to go even slightly off the beaten path and you only have sneakers.- they are going to get ruined. Thanks for the subscribe, I appreciate it! If you've been visiting places like Scotland, Wales etc. for years, then the West coast of Ireland will make you feel right at home! The mountains are perhaps less high, but there is an unmistakable rough feel to them. If you see any shots in my videos that you would like to know the exact location of, just comment on that particular video, mention the time stamp (for example 1:22 or 14:54) and that you would like to know the location. I'll make sure to give you the coordinates so you can add it onto your list of places to take your landscape shots.

I drove the Ring in September 2018. on the way to Dingle. Unfortunately I had to rush it to get to my B&B. It was a bit of heatwave but the roads were empty. A small car works best on those windy roads and make driving great fun. I stopped at the very windy Kerry cliffs. I want to go back to see those Tetrapod tracks.
Hope you enjoyed your time on the drive. You're right - even though the drive can be challenging with the bendy roads, it *is* a very fun drive! And, good news, the stretches around Waterville and Kenmare have been resurfaced so are way easier to drive now!

You get used to it pretty quick. Just remember that you do not *have* to drive at the same speeds as the locals do. They know the roads, and many have apparent death wishes. With the bends, deer, sheep, and bad state of some roads, it is best to drive at slower speeds. Remember that the speed signs are 'the limit', not a target.

So glad to read that you got something out of our video, Laura. I'm sure you will have a great stay in Ireland. My two cents: - Having a whole month is fantastic. It takes the rushing out of things, and gives you the option to just visit 1 or 2 places a day, really giving those sites the time they deserve. - Do **not** rely on public transport. I repeat, do not rely on it. See this video for some more context: ua-cam.com/video/R-Uxarciz8U/v-deo.html. Public transport can get you across the country, but it will not get you to the sites you might want to visit. Even the most touristy places are almost undoable with public transport. Let alone a semi-touristy spot. Strongly consider either a tourbus or a rental car, or cashing up some big money for local taxis. Public transport does not work in Ireland, the way you would expect it to. - Two suggestions of towns to make your home base if you do not go on a tour: Kenmare (smaller and more limited, but means less tourists) and Killarney (more catered towards tourist, giving you more options, but can get crowded at the height of the season). Both are great bases to explore the 5 peninsula's in the South-West of Ireland (Dingle, Iveragh/Kerry, Beara, Sheep's Head and Mizen). Hope that helps!

Hi John! Glad you liked it and found something of value here. I found that the Ring of Kerry is definitely a case of "you get out of it what you put into it". Meaning, with the right attitude, a little planning, and a go-getter mindset, it is just fantastic. But we've also seen plenty of people just getting stuck in the "tourist trap" of the Ring, just doing the drive alone, just seeing Torc waterfall or Ladies View, and not really getting the most out of it. Hopefully, the video gave you some pointers on what you could see, but there is so, so much more here to discover, it is just amazing. Most places you will be just fine with payment cards. However, some of the spots rely on so-called 'honesty boxes' (cause there is just no-one around). As such, it is always good to have some small change/coins with you. Hope you both have a great trip!
Driving around the Kerry peninsula is an absolute joy, I think you will love it once you make it down here, whenever that is. There is actually not a season that the Ring isn't beautiful!

Not an actual map, but hopefully the following is helpful: Gap of Dunloe - Start at Kate Kearneys Cottage and make your way up to the actual Gap of Dunloe. Keep on driving down into Black Valley, into the tiny hamlet. Pass the church and keep on driving that same road, leaving the hamlet. At the split in the road at a bridge you will see the signs for Lord Brandon's Cottage. Have your break at the cottage. Once done, drive back the same way you came, through the little hamlet, past the church, back up to the Gap of Dunloe, down to Kate Kearneys Cottage. Kerry Cliffs - at the exit of the Cliffs parking, take a right, up the steep mountain. This is road that is designated as the Skellig Ring. Keep following the signs of the Skellig Ring, through The Glen, past Coom Wedgetomb and into Ballinskellig. From Ballinskellig, make your way to Waterville as you see fit (flat bogland this last section, doesn't matter which road you take to get to Waterville).

Love Waterville - but as you can tell it was already an incredibly filled day, so we chose to leave it be. Still, for anyone wandering, Waterville is very charming!
Yes, I could agree if this day is a nice weather day, despite it's a unpleasant race. But if, as I already seen, it's a foggy day... No, really, you need more than a day to really appreciate the ring of Kerry ! "Kerry cliffs" is the wosrts tourist trap I've ever seen. Seriously, you need at least 2 weeks to see all that is shown in this video.
Bang on the money there Michel - you really do need more than 1 day to do the Ring justice. In fact, I'll soon be releasing new videos with extra places you can then include around the Ring if you do decide to make it 2 or more days (this place indeed deserves two weeks, not two days). Good tip. During the high season (mid summer) the days are long, so a lot of day light and the Gap starts to die down after 6. Still people about, but you get a better experience.
Hello! We are flying to Dublin, driving to Glendalough, Wicklow Monastic City. We will explore a little then travel down to Matty's Pub/Apartment to stay the night and rest up. The next day heading to New Ross, Wexford to look up family gravesites, then traveling to dingle with some stops at an apple farm, and castle to break up the long drive. We are staying in dingle for about 5 days. I have decided to take your advice on Ring of Kerry in one day. So wish I could do more, but we won't have the time I don't think. I have two questions. We are going at the beginning of May. Are the daylight hours long? I googled it and it said that they were but I wanted to make sure, not everything you read is true. Also, is it wise to drive from the Cliff of Moher in one day from Dingle or make that another visit? I wish we were flying into Shannon it would help save time, but to be honest we didn't know what we where doing when we bought those tickets.
That sounds like quite the trip you've got planned. Hope you have a great time when you are here. My two cents (just suggestions): 1 - May has plenty of daytime. Meaning that if you leave early enough (let's say anywhere before 9, preferably before 8 am), you will be able to do the whole Ring of Kerry. 2 - Yes, you can make the drive from Dingle to the Cliffs of Moher in one day, and back again. I'd say it is about 3.5 to 4 hours of a drive, depending on traffic and exactly where on Dingle you are located, to the Cliffs. When in county Clare (location of the Cliffs), consider stopping at Pulnabrone Dolmen (goo.gl/maps/FKsnRkGJmFRVB2wcA) or Bunratty Castle (goo.gl/maps/9azayykZwYfQ9tGUA). Both are certainly worth a visit all by their own. All 3 locations (Cliffs, Dolmen, Castle) are tourist hotspots. Be prepared for that. 3 - When driving from Dingle to do the Ring of Kerry on the Iveragh Peninsula, consider this stop on the way from Dingle, that isn't mentioned in this video. Both locations are right next to each other, and really worth a stop: - White Chapel Church: goo.gl/maps/iJEvEQcGxLbGtUE78 (perhaps our favorite unexpected find in the last few years!) - Killagha Abbey: goo.gl/maps/TK92DLHv2efHJcsb8 Worth the 30-40 extra minutes parking the car and visiting these two spots!

We plan to do the milk market in Limerick before Cliff of Moher so we will be heading out early! We also will be doing Ring of Kerry one day. Pretty crowded - the height of the tourist season is mid-June to mid-August, but the first week of June is already pretty busy. You will see tourists everywhere unless you are *really* off the beaten path. Hope you still have a lovely time!
@@AdventuresInQuietPlaces Just to give an update. We just went to this region in the first month of june. It was indeed a bit to busy for my taste. But overall it was okay. I talked to a man from the tourist office, he said that he saw an average of 30 coaches a day passing through. And that in the high-season (july-august) there is an average of 90 coaches passing through!! He said that the best months to visit Kerry are may and september. now, let me say this was one of the most beautiful holidays we ever did! We visited many things you talked about in your videos! thanks man.

I'm a little disappointed as my family came from Valencia Island and cahersaveen. The Sullivan's and Brennan families. It would have been grand to see the way they lived. Love your videos. One thing I would add if you could would be something that shows how you got to the places. At 5:03 you discuss Lord Brandon's Cottage and the beautiful view there and while yes I can look at google maps, I want to try and retrace your drive!
Fascinating places that I would all like to see but I have a question about the driving. It looks like part of the stretch is a one-lane road and I wonder what happens if you meet a car going the other way - does one of you have to back up or car you sometimes squeeze by with smaller cars? Is the loop in these sections one-way?
It is going to be a very full day, for sure, Firminto. But definitely worth it. Don't feel too bad if you can't do it all. Most important it to enjoy yourself :)
At least it was better weather than when you visited! The vista at 12:51 was completely obscured by the heavy rainfall we had on your visit, so at least you get to experience it in this way :). Hope you are keeping well man!
Nope, two way lane for 99.9% of the way. There is one bridge crossing that is 'one lane', where you have to negotiate with the oncoming traffic. In the video you see b-roll of one lane in the Gap of Dunloe. This is technically not on the Ring of Kerry, just a much visited side trip that many people go for when on the Ring of Kerry. For the places where that road is one lane at the Gap of Dunloe, there are plenty of side-bays where you can pull over for oncoming traffic. Hope that helps.
DJI Osmo pocket - first generation. The inbuilt gimbal is great for the type of off-track adventures that we do. And it being so small is a real plus. Waiting for later this year for DJI to release the V3 of the Osmo. Hopefully with a bigger sensor :)
Hey man, I just wanted to say thanks! My family and I just finished our Ring trip today and we followed your itinerary, and we all had a blast. Black Valley was a neat, quiet treat, and the Cliffs were specatular. We only had 1 minor hiccup, those horse carriages on the Gap take no prisoners!

10:07 - Kerry Cliffs I visited Ireland about six years ago, and happened upon the Kerry Cliffs. To this day, I tell everyone how much more impressive the Kerry cliffs are than the Cliffs of Moher. I am going back in a couple of weeks, and will be visiting the cliffs as well as other sites you mention in the video

Can you recommend some beautiful places that can be access by car without walking too much? There shouldn't be too many tourists. If possible it would be great to have cliffs/the ocean and the harsh landscape. Already thanks a lot.
We are coming from America and are going to drive the Ring of Kerry and Skellig Ring in one day in the middle of May 2022 (would love to take more time but our schedule didn't allow it). I've heard it's best to drive the Ring clock wise because the tour busses go counter clock wise (so you won't get stuck behind them). Is that true?
May is a great month to do the Ring of Kerry - Rhodondendrons are in bloom, not too many toursists around just yet, fresh new green leaves on the trees and the weather is generally really good!

The TL;DR is that if you can leave before 9AM (preferably 8AM) from Killarney, you will be ahead of the tour buses, and can definitely still do anticlockwise. If you are later, consider doing clockwise instead (going into the direction of Torc Waterfall and Ladies View first). But in reality, both options are great, and it is not the biggest deal driving behind the tour buses. The bigger issue is that you will be surrounded by tourists coming out of those tour buses at the most touristy spots. Something to keep in mind.
If you get the chance, also consider going to the little brother of the Ring of Kerry, which is the Ring of Beara, just to the South. The roads are even smaller, so no tour buses - thus far less tourists. We did a video on it recently. You can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/wYaR95YbHcE/v-deo.html

Not a weird question, actually a really good question.
Ireland, tourists and shoes are often... a bit of a mismatch.
On the Ring of Kerry, almost all locations are well paved/pathed. So, you can get away with sneakers.
However, if you are planning on doing *anything* off the beaten path outside of the Ring of Kerry, anything slightly more out of the way, not as touristy, seen in a instagram picture or tourist book, but no big tourbuses stop there... bring waterproof shoes. Not water resistant. Water *proof*.
With the amount of bogland we have.and rain we get, the ground is *always* wet - even in the height of summer. If you are planning to go even slightly off the beaten path and you only have sneakers.- they are going to get ruined.

Oh, and a wind resistant jacket or windbreaker if you are going anywhere near the coast is always a good idea.

Thanks for the subscribe, I appreciate it! If you've been visiting places like Scotland, Wales etc. for years, then the West coast of Ireland will make you feel right at home! The mountains are perhaps less high, but there is an unmistakable rough feel to them. If you see any shots in my videos that you would like to know the exact location of, just comment on that particular video, mention the time stamp (for example 1:22 or 14:54) and that you would like to know the location. I'll make sure to give you the coordinates so you can add it onto your list of places to take your landscape shots.

I drove the Ring in September 2018. on the way to Dingle. Unfortunately I had to rush it to get to my B&B. It was a bit of heatwave but the roads were empty. A small car works best on those windy roads and make driving great fun. I stopped at the very windy Kerry cliffs. I want to go back to see those Tetrapod tracks.
Hope you enjoyed your time on the drive. You're right - even though the drive can be challenging with the bendy roads, it *is* a very fun drive! And, good news, the stretches around Waterville and Kenmare have been resurfaced so are way easier to drive now!

How difficult is it to drive guys on the right side ? I am really concerned about doing it ?
You get used to it pretty quick. Just remember that you do not *have* to drive at the same speeds as the locals do. They know the roads, and many have apparent death wishes. With the bends, deer, sheep, and bad state of some roads, it is best to drive at slower speeds. Remember that the speed signs are 'the limit', not a target.

I was going to take a tour but now I'm thinking of renting a place for a month and taking public transport and maybe renting a car now and then. I was wondering if you can suggest a good village/town to stay in and then I could take day trips. Thanks so very much!

My two cents:
- Having a whole month is fantastic. It takes the rushing out of things, and gives you the option to just visit 1 or 2 places a day, really giving those sites the time they deserve.
- Do **not** rely on public transport. I repeat, do not rely on it. See this video for some more context: ua-cam.com/video/R-Uxarciz8U/v-deo.html. Public transport can get you across the country, but it will not get you to the sites you might want to visit. Even the most touristy places are almost undoable with public transport. Let alone a semi-touristy spot. Strongly consider either a tourbus or a rental car, or cashing up some big money for local taxis. Public transport does not work in Ireland, the way you would expect it to.
- Two suggestions of towns to make your home base if you do not go on a tour: Kenmare (smaller and more limited, but means less tourists) and Killarney (more catered towards tourist, giving you more options, but can get crowded at the height of the season). Both are great bases to explore the 5 peninsula's in the South-West of Ireland (Dingle, Iveragh/Kerry, Beara, Sheep's Head and Mizen).

Hi John! Glad you liked it and found something of value here. I found that the Ring of Kerry is definitely a case of "you get out of it what you put into it". Meaning, with the right attitude, a little planning, and a go-getter mindset, it is just fantastic. But we've also seen plenty of people just getting stuck in the "tourist trap" of the Ring, just doing the drive alone, just seeing Torc waterfall or Ladies View, and not really getting the most out of it. Hopefully, the video gave you some pointers on what you could see, but there is so, so much more here to discover, it is just amazing.

Most places you will be just fine with payment cards. However, some of the spots rely on so-called 'honesty boxes' (cause there is just no-one around). As such, it is always good to have some small change/coins with you. Hope you both have a great trip!

Not an actual map, but hopefully the following is helpful:
Gap of Dunloe - Start at Kate Kearneys Cottage and make your way up to the actual Gap of Dunloe. Keep on driving down into Black Valley, into the tiny hamlet. Pass the church and keep on driving that same road, leaving the hamlet. At the split in the road at a bridge you will see the signs for Lord Brandon's Cottage. Have your break at the cottage. Once done, drive back the same way you came, through the little hamlet, past the church, back up to the Gap of Dunloe, down to Kate Kearneys Cottage.
Kerry Cliffs - at the exit of the Cliffs parking, take a right, up the steep mountain. This is road that is designated as the Skellig Ring. Keep following the signs of the Skellig Ring, through The Glen, past Coom Wedgetomb and into Ballinskellig. From Ballinskellig, make your way to Waterville as you see fit (flat bogland this last section, doesn't matter which road you take to get to Waterville).

Love Waterville - but as you can tell it was already an incredibly filled day, so we chose to leave it be. Still, for anyone wandering, Waterville is very charming!

"Kerry cliffs" is the wosrts tourist trap I've ever seen. Seriously, you need at least 2 weeks to see all that is shown in this video.
Bang on the money there Michel - you really do need more than 1 day to do the Ring justice.

Spot on the money there, Daniel. Iveragh peninsula is indeed its official name. The thing is, in practice, I rarely (if ever) hear any of the locals refer to it as such. Its always the Kerry peninsula I hear them say.

A good time to go to the Gap of Dunloe during the high season is late afternoon. Still plenty of light and everyone has gone 'home' eat.
Good tip. During the high season (mid summer) the days are long, so a lot of day light and the Gap starts to die down after 6. Still people about, but you get a better experience.

Hello! We are flying to Dublin, driving to Glendalough, Wicklow Monastic City. We will explore a little then travel down to Matty's Pub/Apartment to stay the night and rest up. The next day heading to New Ross, Wexford to look up family gravesites, then traveling to dingle with some stops at an apple farm, and castle to break up the long drive. We are staying in dingle for about 5 days. I have decided to take your advice on Ring of Kerry in one day. So wish I could do more, but we won't have the time I don't think. I have two questions. We are going at the beginning of May. Are the daylight hours long? I googled it and it said that they were but I wanted to make sure, not everything you read is true. Also, is it wise to drive from the Cliff of Moher in one day from Dingle or make that another visit? I wish we were flying into Shannon it would help save time, but to be honest we didn't know what we where doing when we bought those tickets.
That sounds like quite the trip you've got planned. Hope you have a great time when you are here.
My two cents (just suggestions):
1 - May has plenty of daytime. Meaning that if you leave early enough (let's say anywhere before 9, preferably before 8 am), you will be able to do the whole Ring of Kerry.
2 - Yes, you can make the drive from Dingle to the Cliffs of Moher in one day, and back again. I'd say it is about 3.5 to 4 hours of a drive, depending on traffic and exactly where on Dingle you are located, to the Cliffs. When in county Clare (location of the Cliffs), consider stopping at Pulnabrone Dolmen (goo.gl/maps/FKsnRkGJmFRVB2wcA) or Bunratty Castle (goo.gl/maps/9azayykZwYfQ9tGUA). Both are certainly worth a visit all by their own. All 3 locations (Cliffs, Dolmen, Castle) are tourist hotspots. Be prepared for that.
3 - When driving from Dingle to do the Ring of Kerry on the Iveragh Peninsula, consider this stop on the way from Dingle, that isn't mentioned in this video. Both locations are right next to each other, and really worth a stop:
- White Chapel Church: goo.gl/maps/iJEvEQcGxLbGtUE78 (perhaps our favorite unexpected find in the last few years!)
- Killagha Abbey: goo.gl/maps/TK92DLHv2efHJcsb8
Worth the 30-40 extra minutes parking the car and visiting these two spots!

We will drive to Killkenny and stay the night, and visit New Ross as planned before heading to our Airbnb. We still are doing everything else except Glendalough due to not having enough time but I am adding your suggestions to Cliff of Moher! We plan to do the milk market in Limerick before Cliff of Moher so we will be heading out early! We also will be doing Ring of Kerry one day. Dingle one day and Killarney and gap of Dunloe in one day. I am going to try to add in all the other suggestions as well. Thank you so much for the advice! Have a good day!

Pretty crowded - the height of the tourist season is mid-June to mid-August, but the first week of June is already pretty busy. You will see tourists everywhere unless you are *really* off the beaten path. Hope you still have a lovely time!
@@AdventuresInQuietPlaces Just to give an update. We just went to this region in the first month of june. It was indeed a bit to busy for my taste. But overall it was okay. I talked to a man from the tourist office, he said that he saw an average of 30 coaches a day passing through. And that in the high-season (july-august) there is an average of 90 coaches passing through!! He said that the best months to visit Kerry are may and september. now, let me say this was one of the most beautiful holidays we ever did! We visited many things you talked about in your videos! thanks man.

I'm a little disappointed as my family came from Valencia Island and cahersaveen. The Sullivan's and Brennan families. It would have been grand to see the way they lived. Do you have any suggestions for videos that go into more detail. Your tour was great. My asullivan family still liv on the island.
Love your videos. One thing I would add if you could would be something that shows how you got to the places. At 5:03 you discuss Lord Brandon's Cottage and the beautiful view there and while yes I can look at google maps, I want to try and retrace your drive!
Fascinating places that I would all like to see but I have a question about the driving. It looks like part of the stretch is a one-lane road and I wonder what happens if you meet a car going the other way - does one of you have to back up or car you sometimes squeeze by with smaller cars? Is the loop in these sections one-way?

Is the Ring of Kerry only one lane?
Nope, two way lane for 99.9% of the way. There is one bridge crossing that is 'one lane', where you have to negotiate with the oncoming traffic. In the video you see b-roll of one lane in the Gap of Dunloe. This is technically not on the Ring of Kerry, just a much visited side trip that many people go for when on the Ring of Kerry. For the places where that road is one lane at the Gap of Dunloe, there are plenty of side-bays where you can pull over for oncoming traffic.

DJI Osmo pocket - first generation. The inbuilt gimbal is great for the type of off-track adventures that we do. And it being so small is a real plus. Waiting for later this year for DJI to release the V3 of the Osmo. Hopefully with a bigger sensor :)

Black Valley was a neat, quiet treat, and the Cliffs were specatular.

10:07 - Kerry Cliffs I visited Ireland about six years ago, and happened upon the Kerry Cliffs. To this day, I tell everyone how much more impressive the Kerry cliffs are than the Cliffs of Moher. I am going back in a couple of weeks, and will be visiting the cliffs as well as other sites you mention in the video
