Fun Fact: Yesterday 16 Jun 24, on my way home from the Columbus Air show at Rickenbacker, I stopped at an OHP post on 40 near Amazon to see if the OHP does indeed monior Ch 9.....alas, they don't, at least at the post. Nice lady said all they had was her console and what I saw had to be MARCS and whatever else they use. I tried calling them several times on Ch 9 and got no reply. Bummer. I too CB daily both AM and SSB and feel the FCC allowing FM to be decades too late especially with offerings like FRS and GMRS having been around for years already.
in Porto Rico they use channel 9 for their Superbowl channel ( guys with mega watt radios showing off how much power they can transmit) but it is all you can hear on channel 9 now.... sadly, most of the day it's 20,000 watts of Porto Rican radio..., I used to leave my set on 9 just in case
South Coast Massachusetts, always seems to be someone on... of course depends on the time of day. not much on 19... I can usually get a radio check.. but sadly all I hear for the most part on 19 is skip.... and the skip kills the usefulness of 19... we have about 6 to 8 towns around me that all have a few locals and they all seem to have their local channel... my base is transmits and receives great and I'm able to hear and talk to most of them... even my mobile can hear most of the locals and I can talk to half of them at about 13- 15 miles on AM
40 - 60 people using the cb radio on amps participating in DX wars. It’s the same group of people for the past 50+ years. What you are hearing are signals coming in from hundreds to a couple thousand miles away because of skip and it’s giving the impression that CB is very popular thinking it’s all local people talking to each other when in reality it’s 40 - 60 people from far away that can’t even hear you.
you sir, are correct...... I have three channels of locals that are always on.. three different area's/ towns. 20 to 25 miles from me..... always the same 5 or 6 guys on each channel... so maybe 15 locals on every night talking about the same things they talked about the night before..... I talk to them sometimes... they are not skip or mega powered but that is only 15 or so people when I did this video I was looking for an empty channel to do a test on.... and every channel I could hear multiple conversations... YES from all over the country, some with mega power some were just skipping into my area..... but the point was.... EVERY CHANNEL had people talking on them... so if there were 3 different conversations on each channel ( some weak some stronger so different parts of the country) then that would be 6 people per channel X's 40 channels = 360 people all over the country/world talking on CB... people keep telling me CB is dead... well I couldn't even find an empty channel that night!
some most certainly are, mostly a lot of skip... but still I saw a couple hundred people using Side Band before I went to the normal CB 40 channel AM band, I must have listened to 30 channels that had 3 to 5 people talking on them, my local channel had the same old 10 or 11 guys talking ( including me).... so I'm thinking I heard 400 plus people actually using a CB radio in about a 20 minute time frame... ... I keep hearing people say CB is dead... well it didn't seem to be that night.
The last few years have been a Great time for CB, wild conditions ... You can talk skip all over the world and in the evening you can talk local for great distances
I thought that here too, I kept my CB on Scan looking for conversations... and never caught anyone talking???? then someone told me of three different channels that different towns around me use.... so I kept turning those channels on and never heard anyone... one night for the heck of it I said is anyone out there???? and several people came back???? they were all just listening waiting for someone else to talk.... I find this on channel 19 too.... I ask for a radio check in a light hearted way... ( anyone out there??? don't be shy... come on... it's just a radio check.. you know you want to say hello ) and I normally get someone and ask about their equipment where their from.. as we talk more people join in...... more people out there listening than you think
it's not always like that... but sure are a lot more people still using CB's than I thought... I must have heard 3 or 4 people on every channel and a couple hundred on the side band channels
@@steve_niceguy There are all kinds of check ins/ Roll Calls etc. I just happened to go to CH21 and get on one in KY. I do one 8pm Est on Ch17 sat night myself. Hope to get you on a videogate soon. Happy 4th
yup lot of powerful mega watt radios in South America and Porto Rico, they seem to like CB's down there as much as us.... couple guys out of Jamica sound like their broadcasting from my back yard.
I thought it was dead everyplace too, then I got a good base station antenna with proper grounding (Antron 99 ... 50 feet to the tip ) and a good radio.... the new radios can be bought with Noise Reduction Technology which gets rid of most of the background noise and static allowing you to hear people most radios would never hear.... I had a cobra 148 GTL and it was one great radio..... but after I got the new radio with that NR (noise reduction) I was able to talk to South Africa, Jamica, the UK, Ireland, ..... I can now hear people I never even knew were there.... I also got a good mobile CB antenna and my F150 can hear people for 20 miles around me and I can talk up to 20 miles... I had to do a LOT of RF bonding to make my F150 radiate the signals but now that thing hears and talks fantastic... my friends with junky antenna's all tell me CB is dead...until I take them for a ride in my F150 and we get 10 radio checks in about 10 minutes
It sounds like 1970's again on the CB!
I have a cobra 138 xlr in my house 🏠 and a Antron 99

27455 seems to be the Latin American call channel (SSB, mostly USB...).
Cb is dead 💀 in New Jersey 😢unless you have a amp 😅😅
