I like to play and range test CB radios. Especially the handheld walkie talkie types and see how far I can get them to work.
( I have over 50 of them) I also plan to do a bit of survivalist video's on how I set up my house for the end of the world.

Radioddity CS 47 range test and review using the Tram 3500 CB antenna
Переглядів 2 тис.2 місяці тому
I am going to install this little Radioddity CS-47 in a 2005 Jeep Wrangler..... JEEPS are TERRIBLE for CB radios... no roof or trunk lid to reflect the signal off... no body panels sticking out on the sides that can reflect the signal either.... so I was curious how this little radio would work on a known good working F150? I can always get great range with my F150 using a Tram 3500 CB antenna ...

my Tram 3500 CB antenna works really well.... I always talk to other mobiles up to 10 miles away which is incredible. I have talked to many Base Stations that are over 20 miles away so I was always wondering how far it could really go??? I've been meaning to do this test for over a year. the conditions were pretty good so I went for a ride. I had to go through a few State Forests and didn't rea...

BEST way to mount a base station CB to your bench.... Computer Monitor arm used for a CB mount

I didn't have room for my CB on my workbench, so I used a Computer Monitor Arm that I can swing anyplace I need it, I then mounted my CB to it... now I have all the room I need on my work bench by swinging the CB out to use it, and swing it to the side when done.
Delta 2 Max running my refrigerator and chest freezer

this is my EcoFlow Delta 2 Max doing a test to see how long it will run my refrigerator and my 5.0 CU FT chest freezer. I got 14 hours and didn't think that was too bad... my old freezer uses over 200 watts, it's not efficient at all my new refrigerator when it runs seems to use 166 watt.... so when both were running it was drawing 374 watts

CB is not dead
Переглядів 2,1 тис.7 місяців тому
I use my base station or mobile CB whenever I get the chance... people tell me CB is dead... and it's certainly not like it used to be.... but their sure seems to be a lot of people still using it!! tonight 06/13/2024 I was going to range test a couple handheld CB's but I couldn't find a channel that wasn't being used..... so CB is not as dead as people think.
Tram 3500 CB Antenna range test and President Grant Export cb truck install

Tram 3500 CB Antenna & President Grant Export CB Range test this is just a little experiment in making range tests and how to make UA-cam video's.. this is just a practice run... not the video I planed to make. I planned on washing and waxing and vacuuming my pick up and going out 20 miles and seeing how well the radio could talk back to my base station... but I only went 13.3 miles to my favor...
Nice install! Your RF bonding is fantastic! Really makes that radio perform! What type of meter is that I like it?
it's a cheap e-bay swr / power meter .... it was $50.00.... but it seems pretty accurate 1.8MHz-54MHz CQV-SWR120 Full-color LCD Digital SWR & Power Meter UHF Type-C #USAwww.ebay.com/itm/404870706320?_skw=digital+swr+power+meter&itmmeta=01JHM9Y34MA647WY8A0BSFWMT9&hash=item5e442cb490:g:ecUAAOSwXY1lhp15&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKnjQ9T3RKP7YZNrG%2F8BWIVG059xGCoCMYDV3n1fCNjKKCXJpZFDZJ3%2F5hcpV3%2BbQJ83kmiTPtvkyghO%2BTM4Eq0QLGu9z1s4pC0Kp8SmebJofQC03NEukYnEG%2Bum7cIHgmuYoG82GzTTGbQ%2F4pLIz1L9C2bvg7v%2BPfPQlDAxiR2STTnHmHsZ%2F0AuYc0KyiiVPudhgLDgbtzkSVyQ4zZYgG9V1s%2BHGvkkoX4aQVSV7JP3ek38lbAjmaejJLqHMDZYMjcm9zKG0A%2FARDU%2FSHFltLoa5MbgGY7va3UrG5YZtO1KvQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR7yy-ImNZQ

i love your setup.. waay better then mine, but still getting the job done..
Hi steve, look @ the Albrecht AE 2990 AFS c.b ,Ssb handheld nice, they do SSB
Super Nice attention to detail with your grounding set up. Two 10-8 radios, no BS! I would love to see your same install with a Sirio Turbo 5000 Mag Mount antenna. On my set up with the Sirio upgrade, my RX was much quieter and a noticeable increase on TX. Knowing you have quality stuff I thought you might like to give it a try.
what cb radio are u running?
It's a President Grant Export that I bought new In 1989... Been a great radio, never had it touched 36 years.... 10 watts AM / FM 25 watts on sideband it has 480 channels
That tape is called self 5% OFF PackYard Self-amalgamating Silicone Tape or Self Fusing Tape. Do yourself a solid and do not cheap out on this. Anything 3m is good. Coax sealer is good from dx engineering and there a few good namebrands that are fine. Do 1 min of research and dont cheap out. Coax is way more expensive than some tape. Also do not cheap out on electric tape. 3m, scotch or similar is absolutely worth the extra 3 or 4 bucks.

Did painting the antenna affect your SWR's. Thanks in advance.
No effect at all .. the paint only protects the fiberglass from the suns UV rays... It will still work normally
I’m getting one of those 😅😅
it's been a great antenna for me. over 18 months so far..... the top antennas are the Sirio Performer 5000.... ( almost 7 feet tall, so too tall for me) and the Stryker SAR-10 ...I hate the foolish blue lights that light up when you transmit.....and it just looks really ugly to me... it is also 6.5 feet tall!!!!! again not for me.... the Tram 3500 is 57 inches tall it doesn't look terrible and is CHEAP compared to the other two.... and it works GREAT!!! after you get it, do a range test and let us know how it worked for you! good luck
Hi, I’m wondering what it is the connector inside the plastic box mounted on the wall
not sure what you're asking, but the lightning arrestor is in the plastic box on the wall. it can't be installed outside in the elements it must be weather proof..... the connectors are just standard CB connectors on the coax PL-259 on each side of the lightning arrestor... and the only other thing in the box is the ground wire with Ring terminal... hope this helps
Did you have to pull a permit to get an electrical inspection? How does that work?
I did have to pull a permit in Massachusetts, and pay $40
just grounded 4 times it will be okay ty simple solutions for sure here
Store it at 80% and it will be perfectly fine. When youre cycling it, go till it shuts off at 0% and then fully charge it. That will make sure the cells are balanced and reset the BMS.
Good Day. Nice & Detailed. I would not have gone with a fiberglass antenna, but otherwise, WoW!! Great Installation and Quality. I learned a few things too. Thank You. Wishing you great enjoyment and a Merry Christmas.
Really liked your video. And I love your monitor mount.
Thank you, glad you liked the video
I just bought the Delta 2 Max during Black Friday for $899. I have 2 of the first generation with the same capacity. Great units. I also bought a couple of 12V lithium batteries that I use as extension batteries by connecting them to the solar ports. I doubled the capacity by 2.5KW for under $400. The 12V battery will charge the ecoflow at around 125 watts an hour. So I then tried a 48V server rack battery that I connected to my Delta Max 2000 first generation and it charged the unit at 423 watts an hour. It ran my 26.6 cu.ft. fridge which is very old and not as efficient for 55 hrs. and I stopped at that point as the grid power came back on. I am glad that it ran the Fridge for over 2 days. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Just dusted off my GTL142 and my Galaxy 959.
The last few years have been a Great time for CB, wild conditions ... You can talk skip all over the world and in the evening you can talk local for great distances
My Ranger RCI 69fffc4 only does around 800 watts pep ,it does good can talk skip up to many states away
Copper always turns green..no worries
Ford Trucks and all other Trucks have grounding straps or they will not run now Ford trucks are made from Galvalum which is galvanized aluminum, instead of using a magmount on them post mount it to the frame
Just wondering about your whole house generator. Is it on natural gas, propane or gasoline?
I have an 11,000 watt Generac PROPANE whole house standby generator.... to Charge an EcoFlow you need a generator that puts out clean pure sine wave power.... all Generac whole house Generators are Pure Sine Wave generators...... I lose my power in winter storms up to 7 days..... I have a large 120 gallon propane tank ( it holds a 100 gallons.... or 420 pounds ...a gas grill tank is 20 pounds for comparision..... I bought the smallest generator that would run my whole house so I could conserve propane....... when the power is out, I let my generator run ( it wants to run all the time the power is out, so I shut it off if the power is going to be out for a while) I start it up in the morning and heat my house up to 75... the house stays warm for a long time.... as the house is heating up I am charging my two EcoFlows ( one for my fridge and freezer and my other ecoflow for my CPAP machine and pedestal fan) also while the house is heating and the Ecoflows are recharging I make sure everyone has a nice hot shower as the generator powers the well pump and oil fired water heater.... we cook breakfast and I then shut off the generator after 90 minutes or so...... then 12 hours later I start the propane generator up again to again recharge the EcoFlow and warm the house before we go to bed and cook supper........so I use my Generac generator about 3 hours a day..... it uses about a gallon an hour so I figure my 100 gallons divided by 3 = 33 days... my propane company is awesome they have 4X4 propane trucks and will get through any storm to refuel me... if I call them they are always there the next day..... so for me this is the perfect system.
I use dielectric grease on the inside of ALL outdoor connectors. Antenna, feed point and lightning all gooped up. I fill the barrels and then the threads. Acts as a lube and slows rust. Wipe and tape. BRAKLEEN cleans the mess for removal or service. Be sure to wrap your tape from S to N and not the other way round. Let the tape work for you. Use the tape as a drip edge like a roof.. so tape S to N and water will not get in even if glue fails. Great job Excellent video. Happy DX..
had an account with Radio Reference for years. Excellent web site excellent reference. Big think tank.
Where are you located?? My area is Dead
South Coast Massachusetts, always seems to be someone on... of course depends on the time of day. not much on 19... I can usually get a radio check.. but sadly all I hear for the most part on 19 is skip.... and the skip kills the usefulness of 19... we have about 6 to 8 towns around me that all have a few locals and they all seem to have their local channel... my base is transmits and receives great and I'm able to hear and talk to most of them... even my mobile can hear most of the locals and I can talk to half of them at about 13- 15 miles on AM
@steve_niceguy thats fantastic i am going to upgrade sone stuff and see what happens....That new Stryker Radio got my attention
Just found your channel because I bought the Ecoflow power station. Appreciate your videos!
Super good video , Would have liked to hear just how much static you have now on your radio ? Looks like a great set up !! Thank you !!!
Man that’s is an awesome miles test range…
I have a cobra 138 xlr in my house 🏠 and a Antron 99
It’s dead here 😢
I thought that here too, I kept my CB on Scan looking for conversations... and never caught anyone talking???? then someone told me of three different channels that different towns around me use.... so I kept turning those channels on and never heard anyone... one night for the heck of it I said is anyone out there???? and several people came back???? they were all just listening waiting for someone else to talk.... I find this on channel 19 too.... I ask for a radio check in a light hearted way... ( anyone out there??? don't be shy... come on... it's just a radio check.. you know you want to say hello ) and I normally get someone and ask about their equipment where their from.. as we talk more people join in...... more people out there listening than you think
Great radio , I also had a President Grnat DX ( Over Seas Model ) Great radio , Also very good range on that also !!! I sold my President when i retired ? Big mistake ?? Thank you .
I have one, if you move the jumper it turns into a little hotrod.

$899 on amazon right now!
LOts of skip--155. Good contacts Have a good evening.
A range test is the only rest. Anything else is secondary.
Steve thanks for the video. I've been using a cs-47 for about 8 months now. the 5 in the menu is 5K shift when you turn it on it drops your frequency by 5Khz so if you are on ch 40 27.405 it will drop you to 27.400. The RF gain is backwards from a traditional CB. RFG off is turned all the way up. as you increase the numbers it turns the RF gain down. What did you have the Mic setting in the menu set at? I recommend turning it up to 9. I've talked skip with mine all over the US and to the UK on FM. 73s
that's fantastic!!!!! you figured out what it is thank you.... my mic gain is at 9 and doesn't really modulate up like I had hoped it would.. I believe 100% modulation is 4 times the dead key.... the radio puts out 7 watts dead key... so 4 X 7 = 28 watts... but my peak meter is only showing 17 watts.... I was hoping to get over 20... but still a great radio.
@@steve_niceguy I can’t take credit there are some other fantastic videos on YT that explained it. Kind of clunky to go into the menu for some settings but it is a nice radio for what it is. 73s
Thanks for the nice vid Steve, love range tests.
Does anybody know how I can use my base station without a tall antenna HOA won’t allow it
UA-cam search "attic radio antenna". I'm pretty sure there's a few videos out there.

Those guys on 27 must be running a lot of power. Sometimes i can hear them on my walkie talkie and im in the Boston area..
I'm big into hand held CBs and have over a 100 models that I like to range test... but I never had one that could pick up signals from the South Shore to Boston, that must be one heck of a walkie talkie! the guys on 27 are all within 15 miles of me. my Base can talk to Boston about 30 miles away, but I keep the RF Gain down so I just mostly talk to locals 15 to 20 miles away... seems like their are more people on the radio everyday. I'm a little shy, so I don't get on the radio to often...but I imagine when I do, you'll hear me too! ... I use the same radio they use, a Anytone 5555 N II... it's a very good radio and puts out adjustable watts from 2 to 60 watts...... small world. thanks for watching
@@steve_niceguy It's an old TRC-212 sometimes at night i can hear people on 27. Im up on the third floor . But no one could hear me trying to say something that far away. unfortunately there is no way i can put a cb antenna out side here.
Thanks for doing this video i got this radio in my little car it helps that everything is on the mic.
Exactly what I plan to run off of my EcoFlow. Thanks for the informative test.
Very nice video.
Phenomenal range and on AM to boot! Wonderful and thanks for the clever video!

You are the G.O.A.T. !!! LOL You have an amazing collection. I found your channel, and hit the like. > I would like your permission to share this video? Hope to get on one of your Watergate/Videogates, if you can receive my DX on ch 17 AM, usually on the radio Saturday nights, at 8pm east. OLd Radio Night. Thanks for your time and money hunting these WT models down. I have one question: Is the Chase better than the Catch, lol 73, 21 South Carolina (Kackalackie ,spelled like I think it sounds-) 🤣😂🤣
I'm never home on Saturday nights or I'd be happy to try to contact you..... I'm actually sick and tired of E-bay.... 90% of the handheld CB's don't work! I know the seller can't test them, but I have thrown out 100 of them.... I'm hoping I will NEVER buy another handheld CB as long as I live! .... well I want to get a Thunderpole TX from the UK.... Thunderpole said they would be glad to sell me one and mail it to the USA.... but I hate paying an extra $40 to ship it to the USA.... but after that one I think I'll be done and just enjoy testing and modifying them I think I have all the ones I've wanted to range test... so as soon as life slows down, I'll start filming my range tests... I like to go out a mile then two miles then three miles then four miles and finally 5 miles.... so far only a couple have made past 3.5 miles from my base station. you can share the video ... eventually I'll have a lot of really interesting video's on the range testing and how well different models work.
I am a newbie, I have never seen anything about grounding out the truck. Excellent!
on a CAR with Unibody RF Bonding is unneeded ... but on a pick up truck.... you can see it for yourself the CAB and the BED don't actually touch each other...... they both sit on big rubber body mounts with a small bolt holding it down... but the bolts will not allow the Ground Plane to flow... my truck is now like a light bulb , radiating the signal out in all directions when I key my mic... I would ALWAYS ground the hood to the firewall... the hood is the 2nd largest area to reflect the signal... and most hoods are only connected by four small bolts and they don't allow for a good ground plane...... good luck!!!!
What antenna do you have on your base sir?
It's a Solarcon A-99 with ground plane kit,... Used to be called the Antron 99... 17 feet tall antenna on the top of a 32 feet tall mast... I have a video on it works very well
How many watts is the Grant putting out?
it's a 1989 President Grant Export.... factory 10 watts AM /FM and 25 watts on SSB... I have a Astatic 575-M6 Microphone on it and it swings up pretty good, to about 25 watts ..... your going to LOVE that Tram 3500!!
