- How to replace a universal joint on a truck. Dodge ram 1500 2500 3500 years 2002 through 2015
How to tell if your universal joint is going bad. How to replace a bad universal joint.
The first step is engage park brake or block the wheels. The reason being when you take the shaft off the parking gear is no longer in use.
Excellent video. This is how every tutorial video should be. Well done, sir, well done
Excellent video.
I have 94 Ram B250, 273,000 miles and stll going.
Dodge Ram 👍👍
“They” always say crap like that. Midas said the front struts would cost $750!just to take them off the vehicle no parts etc. Since then I haven’t had anyone but myself work on my vehicles and I have saved 1,000’s of dollars. Great video.
mark ur end and shaft with a paint stick so it all goes back the way it came out. the shafts are balanced and need to go in the way they came out
No actually the drive shaft is balanced to its self just like a car tire. You dont need to mark the drive shaft if new joints are in. Same goes for your tires they are balanced to rhe rim as they dont need to be marked either.
Sleep well u dunn'er right 💪
The drive shaft is balanced no need to mark anything
The hubs at the front and back can be reversed 180°. It's very easy to make sure you install the hubs the same way they came off, for front and back. It might not matter but why take a chance.
@@rokitman5753 thats what I thought, but my manual tells me to mark and put back as i took it off... why? (ram 1500)
I'll be doing my truck tomorrow, this video helps a lot.
I got a bit confused when he called it a ball joint twice 😂😂
This gave me the confidence to do this job myself instead of taking my truck to a shop
Thanks brother now I feel more confident of doing this job myself
Good video. Personally I put a little extra grease in the caps to help hold the needle bearings in place which also helps keep the cap in place. Also after the u joints are installed, I always hit the housing that holds the joint with a hammer to seat the u joint in place. It pivots way better after seating them. Keep up the great work!
Dude, thanks for cutting straight to it without the small talk
Good info video. I do want to add a few things if I may:
I have an 87 Dakota 4WD 3.9L and have went thru several main drive shaft U-jjoints myself.
While the transmission spline (front) U-joint wears out faster than the rear end U-joint, I make it a habit to just replace both to save myself from any future remorse. (Just like front or rear brake pads and shoes, I think it best to replace both driver's and passenger's sides.)
Some U-joints, like on the Dakota, also use inside mounted C-clips instead of an outside seated spring clip as shown in the video.
Everything is pretty simple to remove with a little patience. And plenty of wd40 or pb blaster never hurts before starting!
And finally: YES! Be careful and meticulous puting it back together. I promise you all its not as easy as it looks!
God Bless!
Thank you so much for such a detailed video. Just what I needed!
You make it look so easy. I’m struggling.
No BS straight to point . I like
Used this vid to help with my 03 ram. Thank you! I’ll add that I hammered the caps out, but used a C-clamp to press them back in. Less hammering on these weak parts always seems safer. Used greaseable Ujoints and Also added a little grease to the slip yoke when reinstalled. But thanks for the vid! 👍👍
I do not think Dodge trucks are the best you can buy. But I enjoyed your video - you were concise, clear, and easy to understand. Plus, I have a 1500 SLT and I'm working on it frequently and I couldn't do it without help from awesome people like you. Thanks.
Thanks man! And doing most of it one handed!
Put grease in the new caps to hold the needle bearings in place and put the grease fitting on last.
Thank you so much! Super pain in the butt but a really big hammer helped this girl out!
This video was so helpful.. I feel I can do it myself..
Would it be a good idea to replace both u-joints since you have drive shaft off?
good video,, u can also use a large vise to squeeze the bearing caps into the yoke.... Keep it all clean..
Thanks for very simple informational video
excellent step by step info and video installing u joint
Thanks for the help. Only took 2 hours....
I did this with a 99 Cherokee last week that had the original joints in it. It took a press and some cutting to get them out. They were in so tight with rust!
Thanks bro strait to the joint..
🤣🤣
Thank you sir
Great video
Not all heroes wear capes. Thank you, sir!
Great video.....thanks! helped a lot with todays project!
Awesome vid gonna do this job tonight
@@Kat_rinaAtTimes good luck let me know how it goes
Great video, thanks for upload
Such a great video. Very well informed. Thank you.
Thanks so much for the vid man helped me out a ton
Some good wrench time, great video!
Starting mine in the morning, Thanks for the help! Ill let you know how it goes.
How to replace U-joint with 1 hand. I love it.
Made this very easy compared to all these guys using presses and stuff to over complicate it
Thanks for the video!
No drama. KISS - keep it simple short. Thanks
Good video but also is a good idea to mark the position of the attached points in relation to the trans and rear Axel.
The shaft is balance so installing it out of place can cause vibration.
The missing chunk could cause vibration.
Thanks for your video it was very helpful.
Not as easy as he makes it look. I had to beat the crap out of mine to get the u-joint out. However I did mine at 180,000 miles. Turned out they were still good. Dodge trucks are the best.
Steven Waterfielkd did mine today, hammer wouldn’t work so I took a 25 lb dumbell I had in my gym and bam, took them all out easy lol.
Going to be doing mine this weekend. Front and rear didn't start making noise til 207k on my 02 1500 5.9. thankfully I have access to all the proper tools for the job.
Thank you, very helpful
Ball joints??? 😂🤔 but great video man … helped out a lot ..also you need to mark the shaft before you take it off so you put it back the exact same way & engage the parking brake
Good looking out thanks for keeping it simple
I appreciate the video. Thank you.
thanks my u joints are acting tough though. hammer a bit stronger to get those old caps out
Thanks-Great Video! Doubt that I can do that with one hand, though!
Thank you for watching my truck is getting old and I always film my repairs could definitely use more subscribers. Thanks friend
Did my front driveshaft u joints near tires in the front on ram 2500 2014 tradesman 6.4l and I used a press, pb blaster penetrating spray, a torch, and even the hammer and socket method aswell as a couple others on my shop vice, if none of those work for y’all, just do what I did and be super careful around the boots or ears where the u joints go in and cut the necks off with an angle grinder for stubborn u joints, then hammer out the rest works way quicker and easier for stubborn u joints that are seized mine where inside c clips 👍🏻
Thanks man you're a lifesaver appreciate the knowledge
Thank you my friend
Great video
Good video brother
I rented a press to put u-joints on. Guess I could just bang/tap it. We will see how it goes! 160$ deposit for a glorified
c- clamp to press them I'm and out!
Thank you!!!💯
Nice job one handed
Great tutorial
Very helpful
This video was helpful.
Thank you so much!!!! It work it 👍👍
Nice video. Thanks dude
Awesome very helpful.
Great video. Thx
That shaft came off pretty easy. Almost like he's had it off a time or two already lol
No need to mark the drive shaft its already balanced to its self mot to the truck no need to mark it, save your paint to mark pot holes instead 😊
You mentioned that it’s your third ball joint/U joint. And still going strong. Might be worth replacing that Chip part is it’s throwing the joint out of balance. Hence the reason why you’re on your third one.
Actually, going from reverse to drive without coming to a complete stop is what caused it in mine. Once I stopped doing that, I stopped ruining my u joints.😂
I thought you had to mark drive shaft so it goes back the exact way it was ?
I changed my and now they my truck squeeks. Any idea wat it might be
Why would you install the joint with the zirc (grease) facing the front? It's easier to grease from the rear.
Good job
We have to be very careful for this part…. Proceeds to do it one handed 🤣🤣🤣
Super confused why is there no zerk on the OEM U-Joint?
Thanks!!!!
Great vid but that chip is probably why you’ve dine 3 universal joints
Do you have to grease up the end that you put in first. The part that goes into the transmission
Can you explain my u joint snapped and my CV joint is stuck in the transfer case and won't come out and won't go into 4x4 either so it's a sitting duck and I'm at a loss
So how u knew which one to replace aren't their 2 on the drive shaft?
I just did a visual inspection to can fell the rattle
Has a huge gold ring, says cant afford a used yoke at a junkyard
Got to the junkyard and pull the part that’s broken off another dodge. It may be a lot cheaper to do that than buy a new one.
I have a stock drive shaft for my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 and it's got a big aluminum driveshaft and the upper bearings are the ones that are shredded do you have to change both sets of bearings or just the one
i would do both it cant hurt if you already have it off the truck
Hello, who has the part number of the rear u joint from Dodge Ram 2500 2003 year
Typically you can find this at a place like advanced auto parts or AutoZone.com
@@alexdobo3270 yeah just be casutios some of the people op there can't tell the difference between a cv axle ujoint and a drive axle ujoint (don't ask it took me 20 minutes to explain to them "Drive Shaft")
IMPRESSIVE MATE
Thank you my friend
How the heck did you barely tap it and it come out or press in. I had to use a damn sledge hammer
same i used a 4lb hammer after heating 1 bearing at a time then filling it with oil its beacause they are old if you notice he doesnt show taking them out all the way
I'm glad I'm not the only one :) I had to beat the piss out of mine to get the old one out lol
no marking? the shafts are balanced and if not put back into same position it can cause problems down the road....
isnt the shaft balanced by itself?
Good tip, thanks.
I don't think this matters. It's a rotational balance, like your wheels. When you take a wheel off and put it back onto the same hub it doesn't matter if the wheel is clocked the same as before. Also there isn't a lot of mass extending beyond the axis of rotation so the slight imperfection of balance caused by offsetting the ujoint clock by 90 degrees is likely negligible.
Matthew Trevino that is not correct sir. The driveshaft has a rotational balance, not balanced per its mounting position.
MARK EVERYTHING EVERYTIME. better safe then sorry. also on the u joints it really does matter they are balanced
So you do heavy lifting bro? I do that too but my car shakes when I accelerate to go up the hill like the mountains. But on the street or freeways I’m good it doesn’t shake
Sounds like could need a new universal joint im not certain i would check the stack in your drive shafts see if there's play
Alexander Dobosiewicz well if it’s my drive shaft wouldn’t it shake all the time? It only shakes when I’m going up the mountain and when I’m in straight street or freeway it drives perfect with no shakes
Mine does same , only uphill , or over 50 mph it’s the u - joints , I just changed mine , problem solved , you should get on it , throwing a driveshaft at high speed is a recipe for disaster .
Alex how long does this process take all together if you’re doing both universal joints
About an hour or so
How do you know it needs to be replaced, without getting under the truck?
three ways:
- when you feel/hear a clunk when shifting to D or R, or even on acceleration
- vibration is felt when up to a certain speed
- engage e-brakes, chock wheels, shift to N. crawl under truck with a pry bar. use pry bar on front and rear end of drive shaft and feel for play. any play at all means the u-joints need replacing. you may not even need a pry bar to feel the play
3rd set of u joints in the same truck ? No wonder it fell out when you tapped it lol
Man just replace that broken part. The balance matters.
Hey bro just wanna say thanks. Bcuz of guys like you im learning to fix my own shit and not getting raped by a mechanic for something i have the ability to fix. Got 7 kids so $ isnt just a piss away resource....lol 😆 thx brother
Mine was literally busted and a royal pain to bang out.
ones with grease fitting are not solid and break easy. off road
Was it making any kind of noise?
Ivan Skinner when you put it in drive it will clunk
Is the process the same for a 2009??
It should be Dodge hasn't changed their drivetrain in forever...my 2004 Durango is the same basically as my brothers 1999 ram 1500
Can’t get the bolts loosened
you need a new yoke
Where do you keep your tools,,,they are all rusted
I can't get the clamps to fit in 😤
there is a grove that the c clip sits in make sure there is no rust in there or it wont seat
Your Slip yoke is Crack
