REACTION: Texas A&M Baseball Hires Michael Earley As Head Coach

- The Houston Chronicle’s Brett Swerneman is reporting that Texas A&M baseball is hiring hitting coach Michael Earley to replace Jim Schlossnagle.
With Jim Schlossnagle’s departure for Texas, AD Trev Alberts had to act quickly due to portal and draft timelines.
Schlossnagle too his top three assistants-Earley, Nolan Cain and Max Weiner-to Austin.
Some thought Dallas Baptist’s Dan Hefner made sense among others, but he turned A&M down.
And a Kendall Rogers quote might be key here:
“1. I expect every A&M player in the portal to stay put given this news.” Those players include SS Ali Camarillo, 2B Kaeden Kent, CF Jace LaViolette, 3B Gavin Grahovac, LF Caden Sorrell, P Isaac Morton, C Max Kaufer, P Brett Antilock, P Jason Bodin, 2B Jack Bell, LF Jett Johnston, 2B Juston Vossos, IF Carl Schmidt.
Also the MLB draft is coming up. Aggies' class ranked 8th at Perfect Game.
The other part of Rogers' tweet:
“2. Keep an eye on a Power 5 head coach to be Earley’s top assistant.”
Billy Luicci of TexAgs also tweeted: “A wildly popular move within the program and a guy who won Trev Alberts over in a big way during his interview process.”
Earley has been A&M’s hitting coach for three years. The Aggies have one of the country’s top offenses during his tenure.
Earley hitting coach under Tracy Smith (whom he played for at Indiana) for four years at Arizona State (and helped produce Spencer Torkelson).
But Earley is young--just 36 years old. On the other hand, Tennessee’s Tony Vitello was 38 when the Vols hired him.
Earley should also benefit from facilities upgrades as A&M’s Board of Regents approved $80 million.
The Aggies have a tradition of success--they’ve made the NCAAs 17 of last 18 years and the College World Series eight times, including two of the last three.

I think this is a great hire! There was a wee left in the transfer portal so for any HC to move rn would be him screwing his team (who would do such a thing) and w/ Earley you retain 95% of this roster and hire a young promising coach with a ton of upside. Don’t forget all HC start as assistants somewhere including the great ones like Tim Corbin, Vitello, or O’Sullivan.
As a Tennessee Vols fan I feel bad about what ya'll are going through. You'll be back soon, just keep the faith.

Right,😢 I know I would have been so heartbroken for the players(mostly)& Vols fans if we would have lost the CWS finals, but losing the championship and your head coach to your rival what sucks so bad and I don't think any fan base really deserves that but Bama.😅

You tried to steal their coach but failed.
ok first. DBU coach was never even interviewed. Your info that he turned down offer is totally wrong. Second, ALL players in these situations have to jump in the portal simply to maintain their options going forward. doesn't mean they are going anywhere. It's the way it was designed.

If I were in charge, I would offer to double Max Weiner's salary and offer him Pitching Coach/Assistant HC job. The guy is a pitching coach savant and was largely responsible for this teams Top 5 pitching staff.

If you believe that Trev wouldn’t have wanted Schloss to stay, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. Schloss lied about everything else, why would you take his word on this?
A&M has some issues within the administration. Otherwise they would have been able to hire a better, bigger named coach. Little by little, information is coming out about Trev and some of the problems there.

This is the coach all the players wanted. Best chance to retain the guys who entered the portal. Just because he’s not a big name yet doesn’t make him a bad coach. He was on the most successful regime in Aggie baseball history. Guess what. Vertolli was an assistant at TCU before he went to Tennessee. Not a big name then but look at him now.
Not to mention, this gouges Schloss’s staff tremendously as Easley is widely considered one of the best hitting coaches in the country. Obviously on a smaller scale, but schloss betrayed A&M so it’s beautiful that we stole his top assistant back when he tried to take him with him

Aggies, I know you guys are ticked off at this coaching hire. Your athletic Director should’ve gone after a high profile big-name baseball coach with a history of winning and taking teams to the college World Series, continuing the tradition and trajectory of the Aggie baseball program, but instead your athletic Director simply decided to promote one of Jim’s staff members. Go ahead and try to remain optimistic about this move, but I think it’s time for your athletic Director to get the boot. He’s allowed Texas to have a resurgence and years before joining the SEC.
Went after several big names with Vitello on top of that list. All just happened to get extensions. Honorable men apparently.

I think this was good for A&M. Wont have near the staff Schloss has. But will keep some players. Won’t make the CWS anytime soon. But will uphold the “tradition”. Which is all A&M cares about. 👍

Who cares? This is just filler until the football summer camp starts. Majority of any kinda fan doesn’t even have a clue about college baseball except the teams in it.
I followed college baseball from February to now. It’s great.
Whatever you do....don't trust Liucci is your friend. Liucci sent his employee to ask Schloss that question during the post championship loss press conference. Aggie Football will never be #1 in the SEC now that Texas and OU joined. Liucci's last hope was baseball for TexAgs major championship relevancy. Funny. Trev didn't care. And if memory served Trev's departure triggered similar fan horror. To their credit Huskers aren't character terrorists.
Mark this down. A and M and Texas will finish behind Tennessee, Vandy, Florida, Kentucky, and Arkansas. These teams are the real class of SEC. Carolina and Georgia may finish ahead of both of y'all as well.
This means a 2 seed at best. Get ready y'all are heading to an ACC or Big 10 venue. Could go to an AAC or Sun Belt champion. Don't think you'll roll over these teams either. With all your money, and prestige. Coastal Carolina , DBU and East Carolina will be happy to end your season.
