A little about me and this channel:
My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ UA-cam. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of UA-cam I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on UA-cam won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. This UA-cam channel will be centered around my life after college. You will be able to see all of the ups and downs on my journey to success. So if you like the content make sure you subscribe so you can be apart of the Rome Life Family. (Let's build our own personal Rome's together.)
What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different

I'm in tears this was my brothers favorite song. He passed at 48, 10yrs ago. This makes me smile and cry.
Thanks James, now you already know my request. Anything hall and Oates.
Lost my brother when I was young ... I feel ya man
Sabine Robinson..... Its has so many emotional connotations to me as well. The thing is, it's such a happy song, but it reminds you of loss. So it's a bitter sweet song as well. A big hug travelling your way.
Thank you Brian, got the hug. Right back at you
@@sabinerobinson3198 Got it. 💛
Thanks. X
They are the original manufactured boyband. Created for a TV show. But they were shockingly good. You need to review “Last Train to Clarksville.”
They started out as a manufactured band, by no one counted on their talent and starting with their third album “Headquarters” they became a really great band.
They had great songwriters.
@@kraig7777 they were some damn fine songwriters themselves, especially Tork and Nesmith
@@jamesharris1101 I still follow Nesmith on social media, he's still writing music!
@@kraig7777 Including Mike Nesmith himself.
I was just 12 again. ✌️😄 Who remembers Davey's guest appearance on The Brady Bunch?
I do, I do! 🖐️🙂
@@jackgilchrist Well, I guess we aged ourselves 😄
@@haagatha 😂😂
"I'll never wash that side of my face again..."
( Marcia, after Davy gives her a kiss on the cheek )
My sister would have probably passed out. She had a HUGE crush on Davy Jones.
The Monkees are Pop/Rock. They are underrated by most people but they are quite good.
Or, you could say that they're overrated by a lot of people and they really suck. Sorry, I'm not usually this contentious, these guys just really strike a nerve with me.
People are certainly entitled to their opinions, but I agree with you, David. Very underrated and forever my "Fab Four".
Well, I think they have some really good songs
At the time, we called their music "Bubble Gum Rock/Music".
They were a manufactured fake band for a tv show
Last train to Clarksville is another hit of their's you would like.
And it would give him a taste of what Mike brought to the table.
Indeed, as is Pleasant valley Sunday...
@@swfcocs1 Great Suggestion along with Last Train to Clarksville!!
Good song
@@realPenrodPooch but is it sarge? Is it Rosemary the telephone operator? Is it Henry, the mild mannered janitor? Could be !! I cant believe I can still remember that spot on after 30 plus years lol
Try "Pleasant Valley Sunday", a song written by Carol King about everyday life in suburbia.
Some things haven’t changed. I think about this song as I watch my neighbors obsess about their lawns....
Suburbs, car cultures, LA sunshine, slappy happy music. :)
Like Subdivisions /Rush
this for sure!
@@TheReelgrrl yep, my high school days....
I was a kid in the 60s. The Monkees had a 30 minute slapstick comedy show every Saturday morning and they would introduce a new song also.
One of the goofiest shows ever. Loved the Benny Hill style fast forward segments.
They also had a movie called Head, that was WAY weird.
well, it was originally at night. the saturday morning thing was years later, in syndication.
The show was originally on every Monday night. My older brother and I watched every episode. If you were watching it on weekend mornings, you were watching reruns.
Although mockingly referred to as "The Prefab Four" (America's answer to The Beatles), these four were tremendous artists in their own right!
Thanks for showing them some love.
RIP Davy Jones and Peter Tork 😢🙏.
P.S.
A lot of great songs to recommend, but I really enjoy "I'm a Believer", written by Neil Diamond.
American band, maybe, but its vocalist was a Brit. Therefore the band was one quarter British.
Everyone knows the Rutles were the original prefab four, 😉
@@ploppill34
Touché, sir 😎😂😝.
Actually they BECAME talented artist. The only one that had ANY musical experience before the show was Peter Tork. The rest LEARNED as they went. The first year all the tracks were played by studio musicians, and the Monkees didn't actually play (they mimed playing). As time went on though, they each learned to play.
@@teviottilehurst Micky was also their vocalist and was the vocalist on their early hits.
Thank you. This is coming from a music teacher. Thank you. You are bringing songs to people that might not have ever heard them. For that, and your positive vibe, you're awesome.
YES!!! Davey Jones's awkward dance moves were the best!!! I believe the video was made for the TV show.
Davy was such a teen heartthrob, as well he should have been. So adorable with a charming personality. The Monkees were considered lightweight at the time, but their catalog is quite amazing and they became very experimental. Some wonderful works in their large catalog.
Davy was nominated for a Tony for his part as the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver on Broadway. He performed on the same episode as The Beatles when they first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show.
As a young teen Davy was an athlete, a horse jockey!
Laying in the back of the station wagon with our parents listening to this on 8-track!!!!! This is from my parent's freshman year of college!!! 1967!
Pleasant Valley Sunday, Mary Mary, too many more!!! Lol
I love how in the video, Davey Jones is so self deprecating. He knows he's short. He also knows his voice carries this song. Too cool.
The Monkees just make me smile.
The songwriter, John Stewart, (one-time member of the Kingston Trio, & writer/singer of "Gold") is an undervalued American Treasure.
The Monkees are my second best band ever behind The Beatles. I was a teenager in this era, and they were the two bands that dominated the 60's...........
Back in the day, this kind of music was considered Pop/Rock. In more recent years it has been referred to as Bubblegum Pop. It was definitely a more innocent time in a lot of ways. Whatever you call it, it's still great music!
Roberta Flack- The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. And grasp the fact this was before "autotune" could make any voice sound perfect. Soulful..
You nailed it when you said “good vibe video”. It’s just a simple fun good song.
Their TV show is as good with all their songs back then in them.
It was supposed to be a TV show they were not considered a real group. I was really happy you liked them because they are one of my favorites
SHE is another great Monkees song
Rome, sure it’s quirky and it’s silly, but it’s honest and it’s such an outstanding song. Love your channel man
Hey James The Monkees were a tv show way back in the late 60s and was on reruns for years they were quirky and extremely funny and the show just campy and silly. James, you should be sure to watch one of the Monkees tv show episodes you will be laughing. They did play instruments and do the singing and had some great songs. They reunited and went out on tour in the late 80s were super successful. Generations of people love them. Enjoy!
Pretty much based on a Beatles hard days night, loved the show as kid, watched the reruns in the mid 70's
This is such a happy song. I absolutely love it!
Genre is pop. Specifically: 1960s Bubblegum Pop
Pleasant Valley Sunday is a must.
The song was written by the great John Stewart, who wrote so many great songs. One of America’s finest, his original is much more emotional...check it out.
Believe or not it's called bubble gum music. They were the ORIGINAL BOY BAND put together for t.v. the thing was that they were VERY GOOD! They were not allowed to play their own instruments until they revolted and got to play. Look at the opening of the t.v. show. That crowd at the concert is REAL! Almost Beatles status for a time. They were also Marcia Brady's favorite band and she is the fan club PRESIDENT of Davy Jones who sings daydream beleaver. Thank you for this wonderful reaction. Check out last train to Clarksville. You will love it. Stay safe and healthy and God bless.💙💚💛💜💟💖💕💓💗💞❤👏👍
Wow. When I was 12 yrs old I got my first record player for Christmas and all 4 Monkee albums. I was a happy girl in love with lead singer Davey Jones. Teen mag photos everywhere. So fun.
Oh good. One of my favorite songs.
My favorite show as a kid.
Officially ( as well as lovingly) known as Davey’s song this one in Particular always Brings tear to my eye.
learned this song on trumpet recently - watched the Monkees as a little kid religiously. love the technicolor vibe. so 60's.
Last Train To Clarksville, I Wanna Be Free, A Little Bit You A Little Bit Me, many more!!
"What's the number Jim?" "7A!" "Alright alright it's because I'm short I know"
Thanks. I love that intro. I guess it’s not in the video
It's what number is this Chip?
@@alisonflaxman1566 ah! Thanks!
60's music always causes me to feel nostalgic. Weird because I know nothing about the 60's and wasn't even born yet until another decade. But, it just seems like it was such a more simpler and happier time.
People don't realize that Davy was nominated for a Tony Award for his part as the Artful Dodger in "Oliver!". He was very talented dancer.
Don't forget some of their newer songs, "You bring the summer." "She makes me laugh." "Me and Magdalena." from the album "Good Times." All great songs.
This is Bubblegum Pop. The lead singer/ dancer here is Davy Jones an English guy that had appeared in the worlds longest running soap Coronation Street, just celebrated it's 60th anniversary, before going to the USA and auditioning for The Monkees.
You should listen to Randy Scouse Git (2007 remaster is the best quality) Last Train To Clarksville and Pleasant Valley Sunday
Axl Rose has the same dance move in I believe Sweet Child of Mine. Wonder where got his moves from.
Steven Tyler of Aerosmith uses these moves as well.
I think Cuddly Toy is one of their most overlooked songs. Goin Down is another very good song of theirs. Axl Rose of Guns N Roses emulated Davy Jones dance style, that's where he learned his moves from.
Love The Monkees! So many great songs from Shades of Grey to Randy Scouse Git to What Am I Doin Hangin Round to Goin Down! RIP Davy and Peter
I got into The Monkees back during their 20th anniversary in 1986. MTV and Nickelodeon started showing reruns of the TV show and Micky, Davy & Peter reunited for a tour (Mike was too busy to do the tour, but did join the others for an encore at a show at the Greek Theatre in LA... there's video here on YT of it). I was only 12 at the time, but I did get to see that tour (my 1st concert). I met Micky a year or 2 later at a meet & greet (I sadly lost my photos & autograph though). Still a fan and rewatch the tv show from time to time (it only ran for 2 seasons... I have both on DVD).
Two songs that will blow you away, Maggot Brains - Funkadelics and George Clinton. Absolute Masterpiece. The second BRILLIANT song - Thick as a Brick, Jethro Tull.
Axle Rose of Guns and Roses blatantly uses the "Davy Jones sway" in Daydream Believer..in Guns and Roses "Patience" music video.
I'm 57 and terminally ill. Even on the worst days, this song makes me smile and I have no idea why! Even though numerous decades, this is still the only song that that has that affect on me!
This is Pop Music of the 1960s. In this case it's often derided as "bubble gum pop" or "teenie bopper" music. This is another Neil Diamond song. He wrote many for the Monkees before starting on a successful career of his own in the 70 and 80s.
My 9 year old little heart fell completely in love with Davey Jones because of this song. xo
I been a Monkee fan for 46 yrs love them they have different styles they each had there own it more like pop music
This song was written by Neil Diamond if i remember correctly. The Monkees was a sitcom - I think I've seen every episode. This is late 60s pop. Its not awkward dancing but the type of dancing that was in style back then
No Daydream Believer was written by John Stewart.
You need to watch the tv shows, this "video" is taken from the show... The MONKEES ARE ONE OF THE FIRST "formed for TV" boy bands. Very successful because of their obvious talent and the cross atlantic appeal... Davey Jones being from the UK. You need to watch their theme song "Hey Hey We're the Monkees"
It’s fun! It gives you a little sunshine in your life! It’s sweet and the lead singer is cute and the last part where they’re trying to block him - FIN! Who doesn’t want to see that? And yes you’d want to hang around them and if you don’t hear this song and it perhaps brightens up a bad day - I don’t know what will 🥰. Love your positive comment - so lovely to hear when some people can be so negative .... you’re a breath of fresh air 👍💕. BTW I’m not from this era but I love a lot of music ... some may say I have eclectic tastes ... the world is to be explored. Keep it coming 🥰
The Monkees would be considered a pop rock band with psychedelic pop/rock elements.
These guys were put together by a studio for a television show called the Monkees. They didn't know each other before the auditions.
Dang, Davey Jones the lead singer passed in 2012.
The Monkees, on the surface, are Pop - but if you go into their deep cuts, they cross over (as much as they were allowed to by Colgems) a lot to rock like 1967’s Daily Nightly or Star Collector - Micky Dolenz owned the 1st Moog synthesizer and played it on Daily Nightly for the 1st time and Star Collector has the creator of the Moog synthesizer playing it for the recording. Watch their videos for both these songs -they’re amazing!
Classic Pop music! "Last Train to Clarksville", Pleasant Valley Sunday. I'm a Believer"
The Monkees are another under appreciated band. I'm gonna get a list for you!
React to Mamas and the Papas Dancing in the Street to see sick dance moves from Cass Eliot
They used to do one or two songs during their tv show each week, usually they’re goofing around and having fun. They had some GREAT writers doing their music, and the Wrecking Crew in the studio doing the official music.
Like with the Beatles, my favorite song of theirs changes throughout the years, and right now it’s “Daily Nightly”, a great song if you care to check it out.
I loved this song as a kid. Loved their TV sitcom too. Childhood memories. Your audio is awesome, video is good.
Their show always made me smile, and I was so happy when MeTV ran them for awhile. I hope to they do it again.
But my first feeling is that this is the kind of music we need right now. Innocence, fun, no reason other than to make people feel good.
P.S. I call this 1960's pop. Not Bubblegum pop, just plain good time music.
This is called Bubblegum Rock (or Pop), which was very popular from 1966-1972 (or so). Would love to see you react to their Christmas song "Riu Chiu", sung a cappella.
The next Monkees song you should review is Pleasant Valley Sunday!
I'm a huge Monkees fan! I've seen them in concert 6 times & was there, live, when they got their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The guys put on a great, interactive, concert. Especially the late Peter Tork, an amazing musician, who seemed to really enjoy playing with & to the audience. I'm a 2nd generation Monkee's fan, a product of MTV's 1980's revival. I've met Michael Nesmith & the late Davy Jones. Both were great!!! Davy Jones (age 57 & still sexy) signed my t-shirt with me in it AND Michael Nesmith put on an old blue wool hat for pictures. How nice is that?!?!
I liked this song a lot when I was a kid.
The Monkees also had a TV show in the 60s and you can view entire episodes here on UA-cam. You must check them out.
this is pure POP
YEP YEP YEP...OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS ALIVE.
I am 60. I listened to these guys as a 10 year old. Of course crushed on Dave’s Jones. Back in the day kinda cheesy pop but they sounded good. This is the 60’s.
I had a crush on Davy Jones when I was a teen. I'm 63 now. Davy was singing and he had such a cute English accent.
Actually the song "I'm a believer" was written by Neil Diamond
A lot of their early songs were directed and written by others. Check out You Just May Be The One and Randy Scouse GIt from the Headquarters album.
A few years ago The Monkees made a comeback and Released a Brand new Album called Good Times. The Album reached number 8 on the top billboard 100 chart. Not bad for a band in their late 60's. It was 2015 I think. Rolling Stone Magazine picks the best 50 songs of the year and at number 19 was the Monkees Song Me and Magdalena. It features Mike on lead and Mickey backing him up. They sound great together and the song is a serious song about A Man seeing his lady passing away slowly. Check it out! ua-cam.com/video/FNbNYA_rh_E/v-deo.html
I have and knew singer, Davy Jones as I called him Dave. I met him thru some friends of mine who knows Davy for years. Davy used to lived in my town until his death in 2012. Davy used to visit his friend who lived a trailer park near town. My friends gotten to know him. Then Davy moved to the town in a gated golf community. I always wondering why he lives here. One of my friends stated that Davy wanted to be treat like an average person not celebrity. Davy gotten his wish. Everyone in town treated him that way. He loved it! I used to work at local bar there in town. Davy usually stops by for his pint of Guinness. That man can tell some dirty British jokes. As I stated, some of friends like me knew Davy. One of them told me that Davy stated to him - he missed Micky Dolenz (man with tambourines). Micky was visiting there before my friend arrived to help out Davy that day.
another group (among many) that should have been in the Rock Hall of Fame
This is bubblegum pop. Back then we had them, Jackson 5, Bobby Sherman, The Archies, and The Partridge Family. I'm sure there are more... but I think every generation has their own. Nice review. "Pleasant Valley Sunday" would be a good next reaction imo.
What a great song 💕💕
My father would play this for me when I had a bad day. Miss you Daddy. Rest in peace. ⚘
Had a couple of beers with 3 of them .. Great great guys. And your vids are dam good. Well done . Gid-ay from Australia
The dance Davey was doing was called "The Slide"
Davy Jones, the lead singer, was a horse jockey before he sang!
This is from their variety show. They were funny. I loved Davy, the dancer
You should watch episodes of their show. They were so fun to watch back in the day and the reruns today. ✌❤
I love when you react to the 60's music!! I grew up with the Monkees and they have so many great hits. Please get into more 60's stuff. The British Invasion is filled with treasures. Herman's Hermits is a great one, I'm Into Something Good is one you will like. I like the new camera, no lag time when you go full screen! You rock.
Pleasant valley Sunday is soothing
their song "Valerie" is great !
I absolutely love the fact that you will react to anything and don't let preconceptions get in the way. You have found a lot of really amazing music by being open to the experience. With your love of dance of all kinds, PLEASE react to "Old Movie Stars dance to Uptown Funk". I know you love the song because I saw your reaction to it even though I can't find it now. I think you will love it!
Do Steppin' Stone please. Great content!
Listen to Thin Lizzy, I’m still in love with you, live.(live and dangerous album). Irish band, Thin Lizzy was their lead singer, a Black Irishman
Axl Rose from Guns and Roses stole Davy Jones dance moves when he sang Welcome to the Jungle.
This music genre is call pop rock or bubblegum rock. Growing up listening to this kind of positive sound and videos was fun! The little dance move you liked from Davy Jones was later co-opted by Axl Rose for his stage performances with Guns and Roses in the late 80's
Not all music back then was feel good - there was social commentary and heavier sounds too but this kind of stuff was what was prevalent around here 1966 for about 5 or 6 years..
dream
Even though the music was good and they had hits, The Monkees were formed by Hollywood to be a teeny bopper answer to the Beatles. Notice the spelling of the name, 4 of them, Etc. They had A TV show. If I remember correctly, it was a Sitcom - (they were always getting into trouble) appealing to kids and teens. They were teen idols.
Fun fact: Michael Nesmith’s mother, a secretary, invented white out - yes, the document corrector.
Michael also wrote Linda Ronstadt’s first hit: Different Drum 🥁
I would love to see you react to country queen Miranda Lambert 3 songs :
Gunpowder & Lead
Kerosene
Over you
You will love them.
Also, You would love Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” - live. It’s different from the studio version. You will really see how diverse they are here!!
The 1976 Midnight Special version is the best. You will love ❤️ love love it.
The Monkees are pure ‘60s pop, but please ignore those who try and diminish their music with the “pre-fab four” label. Yes, the band was put together as an answer to the Beatles, and yes, they didn’t play the instruments on the tracks (two were musicians, but they weren’t allowed to play until later albums). However, they had top-notch writers (‘70s stars Carole King and Neil Diamond), and their songs remain outstanding, catchy classics. Don’t let anyone tell you that the ‘60s were just about about supergroups like the Beatles, Stones, and Beach Boys. Some of the best stuff comes from one- and two-hit wonders, but the Monkees had multiple hits. Others you should review: “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” “Not Your Steppingstone,” “The Girl That I Knew Somewhere,” and the theme song to their TV show---which should be credited with giving birth to MTV (though the Beatles often get the credit due to their music-video movies).
60s Pop. They where a TV show that had some really good songs. This was before my time but I enjoy the simple positive music. Some of their other hits are: (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone, Last Train To Clarksville, A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You, Pleasant Valley Sunday, I'm A Believer (original), Monkee's Theme, and Listen To The Band.
Love the Davy Dance! Davy Jones (David Bowie's original name was David Jones - had to change his name because the name was already taken by Davy) passed away from a sudden heart attack. Michael Nesmith's (knit cap) mother invented Liquid Paper and Michael himself was instrumental in the development of MTV, it was a very innovative idea to make a channel devoted to music videos, but he didn't want to deal with running a whole network. Micky Dolenz (blue shirt, tambourine - he's always been my favorite Monkee!) was a child actor, he played the title role in a TV show called Circus Boy. Peter Tork (the other guy on the piano) has also passed away. Michael & Micky are the only two Monkees left.
Love me some Monkees!!! Yes, please react to more!! Papa Gene's Blues is a great one.
Thanks for the reaction to this one!!
(These guys were the "pre-fab Four", a play on the Beatles' "A Hard Days Night". They did end up playing their own written songs and played on later albums. They were a television show to begin with. They had talent that the music producer never let them use.
The Monkees were a pop-rock group. The Monkees were originally created for a TV show. The show's producers were trying to cash in on Beatlemania (Beatlemania was the over-the-top, ecstatic fanaticism surrounding the Beatles), so the producers found four guys who resembled the Beatles with mop-top hair styles and wrote Beatle-like pop songs for them to sing. Ironically, at the time, the Beatles themselves had outgrown their loveable mop-top pop-band image and started to become more complicated and psychedelic in their songwriting.
Volumn is a little low. Love the Monkeys! Thanks! They had a little comedy show, but were serious musicians. I would call them soft rock. They have some hard songs too.
Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz.
