- A US Army colonel and a civilian woman supervising him must track down stolen Russian nuclear weapons before they're used by terrorists. Two trains collide in rural Russia, one of them housing nuclear weapons that go missing after the wreck, and the U.S. government is alerted. Nuclear specialist Dr. Julia Kelly (Nicole Kidman) believes that there will soon be a terrorist attack, so Lt. Col. Thomas Devoe (George Clooney) joins Dr. Kelly as they try to track down the warhead-stealing culprits. They learn that Yugoslav terrorist Gavrich (Marcel Iures) has his hands on the weapons, and he's plotting a devastating attack on New York. This clip features a W140 S-Class S500.

Always wanted a Mercedes W140 as a child, and when this movie came out it solidified that dream even more. Now to go back and watch this clip and have a 98 mint condition "bulletproof" S420 in the driveway hits different. Wish I could post a pic in the comments 😆
I've been looking at getting another S since I have ny first child on the way... The w140 is tempting, but every one I find is clapped out it seems..

The car is built from the ground up with the armor, it isn't added later.
As a result, it looks, and functions just like a normal car.. except that it's bloody heavy, and all other vehicles are just McDonald's toys in comparison when they get in your way! 😁
You can clearly see when he opens the window it isnt an armored window. Just ordinary glass.

@@lawetapotrzebnaodzaraz8383 That's one of the best things about the W140. To everyone else, the S500 just looks like regular traffic. You're invisible to police, thieves, and scumbags. No one is jealous of you, no one is afraid of you, and no one looks down on you. You get to enjoy the luxury of an S Class without any attention, good or bad. I love how boring my S Class is.
I cruise 85-90 mph on the freeway and the cops don't care. I drive into a terrible neighborhood and no one wants to steal from me. I drive into a high end area and I don't get sideways looks from rich folks. No one expects or wants anything from me. Yet, I still get the most luxurious sound system, interior, ride quality, and powertrain that the 1990s had to offer, all for only $5,000 as a result of a 97% depreciation because the car is "boring".

Honestly, the only thing that ever stopped me (once I got the money) was how complicated modern cars are. But these w140s and the early 2000s BMW 5 series are absolutely gorgeous automobiles!
Probably the most coldest, yet purposeful killing of another man in a movie at 6.35 mins onwards. Absolutely ruthless and very well played by Clooney.
The best part for me as his expression is perfect as walks back towards Kidman after shooting the guy.
One of the best car chases on film. No silly stunts, just as you think it might happen.
i work here, in bratislava (vienna in the movie), at streets where it was filmed. now, when i know this locations, it is funny to watch that car chase 😁

The W140 was made in late 1991/early 1992. The e28 was made 1981 to 1988.
Can't compare a 5 year old car versus a 10 year old car. The e34 M5 in Ronin held its own very well - they had to slow the M5 down with heavy traffic and end the chase with a tire being shot out. Otherwise, the 1991 BMW M5 would've easily outmanuevered and outran DeNiro's Peugeot.
@@delanorrosey4730 If I recall correctly it was a 535i in Ronin, because for a split second just shortly before the E34 crashed you could see the dashboard.
It was a US model guage cluster with white needles and a speedometer that only went to 160mph / 260km/h while the M5's speedometer went to 300km/h and had red needles :-)
And let's be honest the 535i was also a fast car back then, but it could also be, that they kept the M5 in good condition and crashed cheaper regular E34s as there weren't many M5s built ;-)
Compare roughly 12.000 M5s worldwide to more than a million regular E34s haha
@@Icecube095 I wouldn't put a specific series number like the 535i to the substitute car(s) being used. Although the movie took place in 1998/1999, the 540i first production year was 1992. 1992 was also the last production year for the previous e34 M5 before its improvements in 1992.
The S38 in M5 was also upgraded after 1992 to 335bhp, up from 311bhp. The 530i engine also had a 30bhp increase in 1992 to 215bhp, producing even more power than the 208bhp 535i/535iS. Beyond that, NONE of the standard cars could compete against the M5 in similar performance.
Using ANY post-1992 e34 5 series would've exposed the continuity problem with extra performance and retouched front kidney grill facia. Only BMW aficionados would notice the difference.
If the shot called for the BMW crashing into the bus, hitting a car, ramming the police car, flipping over, or falling off the freeway and crashing down below, any model with the older front facia could be used and no difference spotted.
Otherwise, they had the petrol versions 518i, 520i/520iS, 525i, 530i, 535i/535iS, and for diesel versions 524td, 525td, and 525tdS.
Both styles of cars used for the shots featured the actors using left hand drive (despite right hand drive being more common in Europe.) Technicians implanted dummy steering wheels and gauge clusters while the stunt driver drove from the passenger seat. (Notice the 0mph/E fuel gauges as Deidre cut hard right in the construction zone.)

The BMW in Ronin had the small kidney grille, which was only used on pre 06/1993 four and six cylinder versions, while all V8 models (530i and 540i) had the large kidney grille hence the reason why the large kidney grille is also called the V8 kidney grille.
Next point is the speedometer with a scale up to 260kph / 160mph, that was only used on the stronger inline 6 cylinder versions (535i [M30 engine] and 525i 24V [M50 engine]).
The weaker ones like the 520i went only to 240kph and the 518i only to 220kph.
And in Europe most countries drive on the right side with the steering wheel on the left side - only the UK and Ireland are right hand drive ;-)
All in all I could narrow it down to a 535i or an early 525i as after 06/1993 all E34 had the large kidney grille :-)
Not an S500 but a 300 SE (as recognized by the 5 speed automatic gearbox)

In Ronin I noticed different front grilles on the Citroën XM
1:58 They had to move the dead body out of the street or else they would've driven over him to escape but clearly he was directly in front of the car when he was shot because of the blood splatter. So that was a physics error on their part. Then they moved him back into the street for the closeup. SLOPPY.
True, also the chase could have been tightly edited to add more tension. Still The W140 is the Star.

Waste of E28s (well, almost). At least those used weren't fuel injected. Had an E28 BTW. Survived a no fault crash into a tipper lorry unharmed. Even still drivable after that. Might not have been as solid as the Merc W140 but still tough enough.
