Great to know we can have 4 CH of audio. That is going to be very useful. Thanks for the detailed explanation, as audio is critical to a good production.
Would love to see a similar tutorial for the XA40. Huge Canon fan but the way the audio menus on the pro camcorders work is definitely a little unintuitive.
Hello Simon, When you are connecting a 3.5mm plug to the MIC port on the camcorder, you need to verify that the Input switches are properly set on the camcorder handle. The setup is described on pages 85-86 of the XF405 manual. You can access the manual on the XF405 support page here: canon.us/3x4q9Cf. If you have other questions, our video agents are happy to help. I typically use adapter cable to mic input. If mic is plugged in and levels show for channel 1&2, why is there no audio recorded from on-camera mic? Say for example you forgot to turn mic on. Levels show for 1&2, but no audio is recorded. Is there a way to keep on-camera audio recording on even with mic, recover on-camera sound for clip where mic was accidentally turned off?

Do you recommend a particular shotgun mic with xlr connection specifically for the xf405 or the new xf605? I would be willing to spend $600 for a good mic, but not sure which one to get. Thank you!
Hello I have Canon XF605 and I am using Rode Mic Pro (exactly the one you have on this video), I have been having trouble with subtle background or ambient noise. Is there something I need to do in the settings to get rid of that subtle noise so I don't have to edit it post-production?

Renting this for a wedding next month. I'm planning to use a shotgun mic and Rode Wireless Go 2 to mic bride/groom. Should I use an XLR adapter on the Go 2 or go into the 1/8th mic jack? I assume the display will show levels for both mic inputs. If I use an XLR adapter on the Go 2 I assume I can also record a 3rd source, scratch audio on the internal mic?

Great video! Question. I record to channel 1 and 2 with two wired directional mics plugged into inputs 1 and 2. The audio recorded is stereo, with what one mic picked up coming out of the left speaker and the other from the right. Is there a setting within the camera to produce a mono audio track?
Hello Michael: The audio recorded to Input 1 and Input 2 will be recorded to separate audio Channels as shown in the video. You can control the audio output to speakers or headphones as described in Selecting the Audio Channels on page 122 of the manual. FTP Clip-Transfer from XF400 to the Mac does not work. Server Name, User Name and Passwort are correct. Neither in the Ethernet nor via the infrastructure in the WLAN. I deactivated the Mac firewall. I don't understand who is the server and who is the client on this connection. When will the connection be heard overall? Only when I press FTP connect or before. The camera does not appear in the router as a connected network device. If this is not the case, no data can of course be transferred. How exactly do I have to configure the camera now. Unfortunately, the German instructions on page 150 do not help me any further. The German Canon CPS support couldn't help me. My Mac OS Version is Big Sur, the newest update 11.2.2

Hi Jem, thanks for your tutorial video. I have two wireless mic but it seems to be picking up its own channel, i.e. Channel 1 output audio on left earphone while Channel 2 only comes out on right earphone. Can I have the audio output come out left and right earphone regardless which Channel we use?
Hi there. Our team of experts is happy to go over your setup with your one-on-one to help with this. They can be reached directly at Canon.us/ContactYT We look forward to hearing from you.
Jem, you are suggesting that for Audio I should use LPCM 4 CH. But that will not work with Media Composer from Avid, because I can not import those files, but it is no problem to import AAC 2CH. Do you have any suggestions.
Håkan Ericsson , have you tried changing the channel within the editing software? I edit in Premiere Pro CC and I have to change the channel because in my video clips, I have four channels. I use my Rode Mic Pro for channel one, Sennheiser AVX for channel two, and on board mic for channels three and four. So, in editing, I was hoping PP would pull in all four channels to the timeline, but I had to tell PP what channel to use in the timeline while editing. I hope that made sense.
Hi, Daniel! If you camera's handle is attached, CH2 input can be disabled based on the positions of the audio input selection switches. If either one is set to INT.MIC/MIC, options for CH2 (as well as CH3 and CH4) will be disabled. Your camera's instruction manual goes into greater detail on the scenarios which can affect the availability of CH2. We hope this helps!
Hi, David! As the size, shape, weight, and cable length on wireless microphone receivers can vary, you'll need to figure out what's best for your specific setup. If the receiver is particularly heavy or cumbersome, we do not recommend mounting it on your camera if you're doing a handheld recording as it may throw off your camera's balance and make it difficult to support with your hand and arm. We hope this helps!
