I miss shopping at Rouses. When I'd visit my sister down in Morgan City, LA they had a big Rouses there and I'd pick up a bunch of stuff to bring back to Texas. I always bought a ton of stuff at different southern Louisiana supermarkets, they always have loads of regionally produced stuff. Just the selection of frozen dinners only available there is impressive.
Fun video. When I used to travel in the states, one of the great joys was finding small markets and country stores that were not on the radar of most folks. Picking up some fantastic, locally produced items and then sitting down in a large rocking chair on the stores veranda to enjoy a large cup of warm boiled peanuts always did the trick for me. At least I still enjoy boiled peanuts from time to time in the Philippines. Back in the states, toppings went over the rice. In the Phils, at least with Beautiful Bride's family, rice on one side of the plate, all toppings on the opposite side. I will have to ask why one of these days?
A lot of people use Blue Runner as the base for their red beans. It speeds up the cooking time because, as you know, to get the beans “creamy” takes time. The flavor you got already included what we call “The Trinity” of onion, celery, and bell pepper. I use Rouses for specialty items I can’t get at Walmart or Aldi. Things like a Cheisasi ham bone for when I cook beans from scratch. But they also sell Royal brand Cajun seasoned smoked pork neck bones which I LOVE for beans (think white or Lima). When I add those, I only use a little salt and pepper, and they come out perfectly seasoned.
Blue Runner red beans are great. I use them all the time when I fix red beans, rice and sausage. Makes for a very quick meal. The fact they're already creamed makes all the difference. Rouses has a ton of their store brand items and the quality is usually on par with the national brands.
The other Rouses stores are pretty much big supermarkets and wonderful! I'm a New Orleanian for many generations & I serve rice both ways ... sometimes underneath but mostly a big round scoop on top! Made with Great-Granddaddys aluminum ice cream spoon. On my gumbo I put rice on bottom and a scoop of potato salad on top. My family uses almost exclusively Crystal brand hot sauce! Loved your video!
I hate that I missed it. We got snow my first year living there and I think it’s only snowed there one time since. Never like this one though. The city looks great in snow!
I'm originally from New Orleans and now live on the Gulf coast. I sometimes mail order stuff and the Cajun Grocer base out of New Orleans ships nation wide. Check them out if you need your tea or coffee I'm sure they would have it. I order the 25# bags of Camelia beans from them 😁👍. Great video. We always have Blue runner beans in the stock room for times I don't want to cook dried beans. I'll usually saute a little Trinity down in some Bacon Up then add the can of beans and just a little water so they aren't to thick😁😋👍
YES! ROUSES! Haven't even watched the video yet, I've just been asking to see this one. Even though I'm an Appalachian boy, I vacation in Gulf Shores, AL and love Rouses!
Good morning Dad. Feeding the algorithm as always but this time I thought I would try to give you a suggestion..how about a meal theme for different states or regions or maybe not might be a bit difficult. Thanks as always and injoy your week.
One thing to consider is changing your parameters. For example, an MRE made out of pouch items, or canned or something. Or, an MRE that is entirely bought as a single item, as in, don't buy a box of 10 drink mix packets.

Great video! Mardi Gras was started in Mobile, AL, sorry guys... unfortunately I'm not able to go to Mardi Gras again this year but I will next year!! I have the baby they put in the king cakes, still in the wrapper 😊 the red beans and rice looked soooo good! I grew up around trains and would love to see the video of your trip. Another fun video DBA!
So many of my favorite things in this video, starting with the train trip and ending with the praline! I only drink Community Coffee, but I need to try the ready made ones. Next time I visit, I’m going to try to find those red beans.

I changed this up a bit: minute jalapeno rice and Hereford taco meat pouch, and the beans (seasoned with fresh roasted jalapeno's). You video's are top notch, keep them coming.
Love how you added the coffee this morning. Im always putting together shelf stable items for our western states adventures. I am always looking for long shelf items and mix them with shorter items. We go places where there are no stores. We can make hot coffee in a bialetti. Love coffee and tea drinks hot and cold when we are out. That creamy coffee sounds amazing. I have southern roots and am happily transplanted out west. Whenever we visit southern states Im always stocking up on southern local grocery items-Luzianne tea and grits.Love love red beans. They make amazing refried beans. Glad we can get more items affordably sometimes through Walmart and Amazon Looking forward to seeing your train adventure with your sweetheart. Sounds like a good time. Something we have never done yet but its on our bucket list.

Funny you mentioned that the praline wasn’t an Aunt Sally’s. That rouses is about two blocks from Aunt Sally’s store where they make them on St Charles 😊. Nice video, glad I came across your channel.
Hello DBA. First, if it's not to late, HAPPY NEW YEAR. Second, always rice first, it does not matter what you are having with it, the rice has to go on first. Of course it then gets mixed right in with whatever you have it with, so in reality I suppose it makes no difference, but it always tastes better when the rice goes in first. Great video as always, and it is no big deal that you bent the rules a bit, they are your rules and it's you channel, so you can bend or break them if that's how you want/need to do it on the odd occasion. Much love and respect as always, to you, D'elle and the family. From me here in the South East of England. xx
I would love to see a video on your favored MRE's to date. Based on cost, homemade version, field ration style, and the ones that were the biggest moral version of all times.... and a what you would put into a G.O.A.T. MRE that would be a "soul savor " I think it would be interesting, plus it would be good for when you don't have a mre video ready.
If you are ever in Southern California, you need to do one from the Stater Brothers market. If you reach the Pacific Northwest, do one from Rosauers Grocery Store.
1 of the things I do Is when I find chili or beans in a can I take a pc of parchment paper with my dehydrator Dehydrate the chili Then I can Then I can rehydrate when I need to use it Keep up the great work Love your videos Still waiting on that kids MRE This is Hamm From Washington state
Rice first, then it can soak up all the good juice/ broth. Would love to see you trip on the train. While I have lived down south, I have never been to New Orleans.
That makes perfect sense! You should totally get down there and experience it. My advice is to do the tourist scene so you can say you did it then get off the quarter and see the real city.
Nice to see something in a tin show up, but get a proper manual can opener. It's worth the space it takes up. :) The rice or beans first? I'd probably make it in my Instant Pot, so they'd go in together, maybe the white rice first. I can't do hot spicy foods. Well, I could do them, just not eat them without stomach pain. Yes, I'd love to see your train trip. Oh, iced tea. If you add a cup of hot water to the tea bags, in a big jug, then add the cold water and lemon juice, the tea gets a boost to steep. Put in the fridge overnight or until cold. Then just pour in a cold mug and let people sweeten it to their own taste. Add ice, if needed. Cheers. Jon in rural BC, Canada
The only reason I use the military style opener is for the theme of the video. People associate those things with C-Rations and MREs. Otherwise I’d use something that doesn’t make me want to choke someone out.
Glad you are back with batteries charged, and firing on all cylinders. Your channel, your rules, your way, bend the snot out of them. lol Have not been to New Orleans in years, spent a couple of years working with the fine folks of LA Fayette, & New Iberia in the early 70's. I credit those folks for my Cajun tastes, and my culinary try all foods nature. Red beans and rice, rice in the bowl first of course, " We are not animals here". We had red beans & rice two weeks ago, with smoked sausage & smoked ham hock. Food at its best, from scratch. We love riding trains, I have been a proponent of train travel all my life, do not understand why we do not have train service everywhere in the US. Air lines have a better lobbyist group I would venture, pays politicians better than rail. I didn't say that out loud. Would love to see footage of your train trip. Great vid, keep doing what you do, we absolutely enjoy your content. See you on the trail Brother.
Not sure where you were staying, but if you were near the French Quarter, the store on N. Carrollton would have been a better choice. It’s a bigger store and about the same distance as the store on Baronne.
Rules are great, but they limit options. MREs are great, but soldiers have always foraged for food locally as well. Love seeing what you'll come up with next.
For folks who don't want to do the pre-made coffee, you can buy chicory coffee single serve instead and those should both meet the time reqs and still be authentic to New Orleans culture. I know Cafe du Monde sells one but I'm sure there are others. Not surprised at all if that's not found in New Orleans for obvious reasons.
Another great video. Have you checked out Chef Corso's video's on cooking while hiking. You will find inspiration from some of the most unthought of ingredients. French onion soup made from a bag of onion ring's. Check him out
As a person of Latin descent I believe it is against the law (Latin law that is) to put anything other than rice first than add beans or meat afterwards. 😂 Great video as always!!
Look up Paul's King Cakes out of Picayune Ms. They have some of the best cream cheese and fruit filled king cakes ever and the ship nation wide. A little pricey but delicious 👍😁😋
Ugh! I love red beans and rice, but I'm diabetic so I only get like 2 spoonfuls safely, lol! I'm trying to come up with a diabetic MRE option that's more than tuna and chicken pouches.
It snowed my first year living in New Orleans. Other than what’s happening now I think it only happened once more in my lifetime but nothing like this one. It’s pretty monumental and it looks great on Jackson Square.
@@dadbudgetadventures it has snowed about 4 times that I remember but each time it was a minor amount. Even though it was a tiny amount it snowed on Christmas in 2004. This event was just crazy. Lots of fun.
You will never run out of places or methods to make MREs, you may just need to change the rules a little. Say, road trip truck stops where not everything comes from one stop. Blue Highways, off the freeways, trips with stops at local markets. And, to be fair, C-Rats were more closely 'meals ready to eat' than the modern version. We could open the cans with a P-38 can opener, which I still carry on my keychain, and eat them cold. My Army 131A son, with 16 years in, has promised me MREs but has yet to provide even one to try. You can take the common C-Rat canned meal Dinty Moore, Campbell's, Chef Boyardee's, and dehydrate them to make MREs.
Yep. Not everyone does it but it’s definitely not uncommon. I usually cook mine for a really long time which helps too but mashing gives them that paste.
I am very much a put in the rice, then whatever is going on it. I want the rice to soak up the juices from the food. I like nothing more than a big bowl of gumbo that is almost a solid because the rice has absorbed all the soup. BTW: I'd like to comment again and ask for a week long meal plan using your MREs and creative stuff like that.
Rouses is extremely high priced. Their items on sale are still higher than Walmart! I only go there for items I can't get anywhere else mostly Louisiana products. What blows my mind is as a Louisiana store most employees don't know a thing about Louisiana products!!!!!!!
Mardi Gras doesnt start til February..Kings day is the start of King cake season but nothing "Carnival" or Mardi Gras related takes place til February.
The Rouses downtown is tiny compared to all other locations around the city. My go-to grocery store. Pretty good king cakes too. Your only flaw is your choice of hot sauce. When ya move to New Orleans there will come a point when you have to figure out your favorite. True locals go with either Crystal or Louisiana hot sauce
I cringed a bit at putting the unopened can of beans into the hot water. Mostly safe, but the pressure buildup could be bad, so not recommended. You should always at least add a vent hole puncture.
I miss shopping at Rouses. When I'd visit my sister down in Morgan City, LA they had a big Rouses there and I'd pick up a bunch of stuff to bring back to Texas. I really enjoyed it. Haven’t found a place this cool since HEB.
Small world! I live in Pierre Part and MC Rouses is my go-to location.

That’s such an interesting concept and I’m sure it has a great reason! Amazing how different cultures do things like this.

Great products are hard to find but these are amazing. And Rouses has my vote for one of my favorite stores yet.

Thank you so much. I just made a big pot of gumbo this week. Never thought of putting potato salad on it 🤔
You chose the good red beans! We often use those when we want red beans and don’t have all day to cook them.
I’m glad they turned out to be good. I’ll be getting more of them.
Glad you got out before the snow.. it's crazy down here.
I hate that I missed it. We got snow my first year living there and I think it’s only snowed there one time since. Never like this one though. The city looks great in snow!

I was super impressed with the store. So much cool stuff!
Rouses is one of my local stores. Really like their salad, olive, and hot bars. Also, regional products I can't find anywhere else.
SW Louisiana here❤
The blue runner beans are great. You were in Louisiana., there are no rules except rice always goes first 😂
There ya go. I like that approach.
Fantastic video, as always. Rules are made to be.. bent.

I certainly could have but, to be honest, those beans were so good without it!

Love rouses market. We visit my brother in MS and always shop Rouses. Red beans and boudin. Yum
Absolutely!
Growing up we had an almost endless supply of home-grown potatoes so we only had rice pudding and porcupine meatballs occasionally and never had anything like beans and rice. As an adult, I have only eaten rice with Chinese take-out; so it is interesting to see rice dishes.
You should try this some time. It’s a great belly filler.
@@dadbudgetadventures I'm part Irish and will chose potatoes just about every time but I will have give the rice and beans a try.
Now I’m craving porcupine balls and rice pudding❤️❤️

Never heard of pralines. Now I'm intrigued. We always serve rice first then stuff on top in our house.
Pralines are like caramel but cooked longer so they are set up slightly more solid and they are full of pecans. Good stuff!

Thank you so much! I think the trains suffer from our instant gratification culture. Personally I’d rather relax and watch the landscape go by.
@dadbudgetadventures I agree Brother.
Rice bottom, stuff on top.
You should try making one off these from an asian market, they have lots of cool weird things.
Gonna do that. I need to get on it.
Not sure where you were staying, but if you were near the French Quarter, the store on N. Carrollton would have been a better choice. It’s a bigger store and about the same distance as the store on Baronne.
This one was closer and easy for me to walk to. Next time I’m in town I’ll be sure to find another location to try out.
Rules are great, but they limit options. MREs are great, but soldiers have always foraged for food locally as well. Love seeing what you'll come up with next.
Thanks! The rules here are more about creating the challenge, but a couple years in, I think it’s time to step outside that and have more fun with it.
If you find an Asian grocery store, you should be able to find a coffee drink in a steel can. Those may have a 1 year shelf life.
I need to look for those!
Drop a tutorial on how to make DBA Pralines!
Now that might be fun!
We keep chicory on hand at our house all the time. So many great options for things that people north of the Mississippi have never heard of.
Excellent score
It was pretty amazing!
Rouses’s King cake is the best
It’s pretty dang good. I grabbed some slices from the bakery since I didn’t have room do bring a whole one back with me.
NOLA ❤
That’s my city. I miss a lot about living there. Other stuff, not so much.
Can't wait to watch.
Thank you!
I think I would enjoy a video of the trip. Rules....adapt and overcome.
That’s a great way to look at it!
Great Video
Thank you!
Rice on top, love the train. Please share
Thank you!
Some EU MRE contains can and soft caned food items along with Milar packed foods.
Yeah I don’t think I’m butchering the idea too badly. I definitely don’t have any regrets with this one.
Another great video. Have you checked out Chef Corso's video's on cooking while hiking. You will find inspiration from some of the most unthought of ingredients. French onion soup made from a bag of onion ring's. Check him out
I love his content. Some great ideas there.
As a person of Latin descent I believe it is against the law (Latin law that is) to put anything other than rice first than add beans or meat afterwards. 😂 Great video as always!!
That’s good to know. I wouldn’t want to violate any Latin laws for sure. Cajun law violation gets the wooden spoon, Latin law gets the shoe.
Look up Paul's King Cakes out of Picayune Ms. They have some of the best cream cheese and fruit filled king cakes ever and the ship nation wide. A little pricey but delicious 👍😁😋
I’ll do that!
Ugh! I love red beans and rice, but I'm diabetic so I only get like 2 spoonfuls safely, lol! I'm trying to come up with a diabetic MRE option that's more than tuna and chicken pouches.
That’s a tough one, especially with prepared foods. And everyone has a different level of tolerance for sugars which makes it even harder.
Why not use a pocket knife can opener to open the can
I’ve got one of those too!
It has been snowing here in New Orleans all day. Currently 25 degrees. I would just about kill for a big hot bowl of red beans.
Yep. Those C-Rats are hard to beat.
Thanks
You’re quite welcome!
THATS OK POPS ... OUR BBQ HERE IN TEXAS MORE THAN MAKES UP FOR THE PRALINES !!!!!!!!!
Love me some good BBQ brisket!
Small bottle of garlic Tabasco is a plus
Definitely!
Interesting. I grew up in Louisiana and have never heard of anyone mashing beans with a potato masher and we ate beans A LOT.
Today I will be making a big pot of gumbo so that’s great timing on this comment!
Rouses is extremely high priced. Their items on sale are still higher than Walmart!
I only go there for items I can't get anywhere else mostly Louisiana products. What blows my mind is as a Louisiana store most employees don't know a thing about Louisiana products!!!!!!!
I think that’s just typical work ethic these days. It’s not that they don’t know, they just don’t care.
Mardi Gras doesnt start til February..Kings day is the start of King cake season but nothing "Carnival" or Mardi Gras related takes place til February.
Well I guess that formal krewe ball was a figment of my imagination. Hmm…
Bluerunner is a good substitute for home made
I’m definitely sold
Rice first, because sometimes i add other stuff, crunchy onions....
There’s a great idea!
Rice first always!!
Definitely
I would like see your trip on train
It’s up!
Feeding Al Gore's Rhythm... Wish I could have red beans and rice, but the potassium load is way above my limit (kidney issues).
Oh that would be hard for me for sure. Al Gore appreciates the rhythm though.
What...no crawfish? 😀
Mmm…shelf stable crawfish 😬. 😂
I’ve always preferred Louisiana hot sauce. It seems more flexible to me than most.
I cringed a bit at putting the unopened can of beans into the hot water. Mostly safe, but the pressure buildup could be bad, so not recommended. You should always at least add a vent hole puncture.
I did, guess you missed that part. I’d never do that without venting. Way too much bad stuff can happen. Don’t wanna wear hot beans 😬
@dadbudgetadventures ok, I guess I did miss it. Never mind. :)
You said:
"I'm retired, but I have a full time job."
So, you're not retired.
Ok
Rice first, then the topping.
Sounds right to me!
