Thank you for that bit of history. Small shops that grew into large successful businesses were part of the American. The ones that are still with us make my day!
During the severe flooding in Houston a few years ago their trucks were lined up waiting to take huge food donations to the people. I love that store but I don't live in Texas.
Never, will we trade the valuable information, inspiration and new ideas DBA presents for a new camera lens. Stuff happens, no apology needed. You have a successful formula and we hope that you will never change your style.
Having lived in Texas for 25 years, I can tell you that the locals call it H-E-B just as you described it. The company started in 1905 by Florence Butt in Kerrville and she called it C. C. Butt Grocery Store. In 1919, Howard Edward Butt, Florence's youngest son, took over the store upon his return from World War I. And then he started calling it H-E-B, for obvious reasons. It now has about 420 locations in Texas and Mexico.
I pass by Bucees more than I stop, they are always crowded during the day and at night they shut down all the food lines. Prices are a bit high for the food. I wanted to like them more, and I DO stop there sometimes though.
The Bourbon Cookies are a British classic. Of course, they call cookies biscuits, so you can find an entry in Wikipedia on “Bourbon Biscuit”, but nothing on “Bourbon Cookie”. That article says, “The Bourbon name, dating from the 1930s, comes from the former French and Spanish royal House of Bourbon”. So it doesn’t have anything to do with alcohol.
Thanks for hitting HEB, Mr Butt made a great company. My Mom keeps hitting up her grand daughter (that works for corporate) to open one in her home town.
If you ever go back to Texas, check out HEB's other branded chain called Central Market. GREAT specialty store with lots of wonderful, unique options. There are 10 locations mostly in the Austin, Dallas, and Houston areas.
We call it H E B. And HEB is amazing as an institution here in Texas. They will fast deploy teams after disasters to get communities services restored. They sent mobile pharmacies to areas affected by Harvey. They are a great company.
Good morning Brother. HEB is initials of the founder Howard Edward Butt, founded in 1919, in Kerville Texas. Howards Mother actually started the grocery store, Florence Butt, in 1905, in Kerville Texas. We call it HEB, just the letters. We are very lucky to have such a diligent person such as yourself, bringing us great ideas in an entertaining format. My Wife, and myself so look forward to your new vids each week. Bless you, and your Family. See you on the trail.
You have now experienced the trifecta of Texas greatness: H-E-B, Buc-ee's, and Whole Foods. Everything is bigger in Texas. The grocery stores, convenience stores, and natural markets!
i know your mres tend to be from oe location builds but for your everyday use versions one thing i suggest is going to asian markets for 9-15 dollars you can get a 100 count pack of 3 in 1 instant coffee mixes that are so good
South Texas here and HEB is everywhere. Really spoils you, but they have a tendency to carry store brands on cookies in particular. Gotta hit Wal-Mart up for some items they just don't carry any longer and that's saying something for all the items HEB carries. Great content. Appreciate the work you do putting the meals together.
Great video. How about doing a “deluxe 24 hour mre”? Maybe be structured around higher level meals that would make other hikers jealous. Lol Maybe even use items you can make at home and vacuum pack?
To my knowledge have never seen the Hereford pouch brisket. Dangit! I have some of their seasoned beef crumbles, spicy seasoned beef crumbles, meatballs in sauce and roast beef in gravy in pouches (as well as the same roast beef in gravy in cans). Now I really want to try that brisket. I know you have said you prefer cans for emergency storage but I prefer pouches when I can get stuff I want to store in them. The reasons are: if conditions become less than ideal, pouches don't rust, pouches also don't dent, I can store what would be a whole shelf full of cans in a shoebox sized tote if I have pouches. Cans do have some advantages, though. No critter is going to chew into a can (not sure if that is a problem with pouches), it is easier to find a greater variety of stuff in cans and, unless you find pouch stuff at a discount store, you often get as much or more in a can than in a pouch for less money. This was a fun video as always. Thanks for suffering the heat if the studio for us!
I think it’s a good idea to have some of both. That way if one becomes compromised somehow you have options. As long as you have SOMETHING on hand you’re doing better than most.
@@dadbudgetadventures Yep. SHTF can be a personal event, too. My job of 15 years got eliminated for budget reasons right at the start of the pandemic. I found a temp job here and there but having a good supply of shelf stable food meant my trips to the grocery could be supplemental - just for fresh meat and produce so I wasn't always eating canned stuff, dry beans, etc. - and that I wasn't going to go hungry until I got a new, full time job almost two years (a year and ten months) later.

Yep. But you have to know a little about the contents to determine if they are still safe. Some things go bad much faster than others. Package type and ingredients are huge factors in how long something can be trusted for safe consumption.

Hi DBA. Over here in the UK we tend to call the bourbon biscuits/cookies bore bon biscuits, don't ask me why, it is just how I was told they were pronounced. They have always been my second favourite biscuit, only beaten by an all butter shortbread biscuit. If you ever find a proper Scottish made shortbread you will not be sorry. By the way, I know everyone is different, but I do not like dunking any sandwich type biscuit, or chocolate covered ones, but I do like dunking plain ones. So we have a love/hate thing going on 😂. I haven’t done the Pig yet but I think there’s one just across the state line from me. Might have to give it a go.
Hello again. I am Jewish, so I think I can make this comment. Maybe H*E*B is Jewish owned? Great video, as always. Think this one will make it to my favorites playlist as a re-watch. Made me really want to visit this store and look for some of these items. Thank you again for an excellent video, and please keep 'em coming
My first experience with HEB grocery store. what is in a place called H-E-B that was Hurst euless Bedford in the fort Worth area of loop 121 loop 183 loop 820 . I now live between Decatur Texas and Wichita falls Texas and I haven't seen an H-E-B here but I would have thoroughly appreciate one being built close to me !! But if that's where the store got its name from I don't know?? Great video always love watching❤😊👍🇨🇱
I need new glasses anyway I thought it was just me . I wish our local stores had a wider selection of the Hereford pouch meats. We have meatballs and the taco filling ones. Great video other than a convenience store you've covered every store we have in our area in Florida.
Dude! I love your channel! Dealing with the politics of food is a pain in the pot!😆 I got it from my mom ("I'm a fish eating vegetarian...") **OR** "I only eat thus and such! It's enough to make me wanna become a liberal democrat and go on a three state killing spree with a weed whacker!! (The problem is that I can never find an extension cord long enough, and I always have trouble with those string spools!🤨) Anyway, the stuff you find always gives me ideas and inspiration... Rock On!!
That makes sense. I always thought the coffee was real grounds. Cappuccino or hot chocolate would work the other way. That’s a great suggestion. Sometimes I find the k- cups and not much else so that gives an option.
Your video quality seemed to be ok. If you hadn't said anything, I wouldn't have thought of it at all. Regarding cameras, I used to photograph weddings and always had a back-up camera with me (and had to use it once). Keep those vids coming!
It’s not something everyone would notice but it was so glaringly clear to me that I knew there would be comments about it. I hate it too because I had my gear so dialed in to look a certain way and now I have to start over 🫤
You just made a valuable point with the honey. It wouldn't be a bad idea being a prepper myself. I carry single serve honey packets usually 4 or 5. A couple for tea and a couple for a sugar boost. Best part they weigh practically nothing. Good to always carry some or add to mres
DBA, no need too apologize for broken camera gears, that happens if you have been around a bit.. You made due with another camera/lens even if video quality wasn’t the best.. I hope you can fix or replace the broken one, much luv friend, from Tokyo,Japan.
Fan of sweetened condensed milk packets, way more expensive than a can, but single serving. Will have to try the brisket. Always a fan of the Indian meals with rice, so many options, and yes, adding meat is trivial for those who want: chicken, tuna, beef, pork, etc.
we have chocolate bourbon sandwich biscuits in UK made for dunking in hot tea, I use the 'one cup' powdered soup pouches as a way to bulk out the calories in Ramen only by a small amount you get a thicker richer broth, trick is to match the soup to the flavour pack in the Ramen
Utah is a looooong way from an HEB, but I can at least look for similar things here. BTW, the auto-focus issue was not nearly as distracting as your sometimes jerky editing. As you mentioned, #2 (the first one) had far too much food for a single meal. For most folks, anyway. Instant coffee is a necessary evil for travel; thanks for giving honest opinions on various kinds.
Thanks again for another great video. I see the link for your truckers lunch box. How have you liked that one? I've been shopping for one and am very nervous to buy nameless Chinese company products, but it's all I can find. Have you ever had problems with it being too small? Have you considered doing an MRE from an ethnic grocery (Latin, Asian, Indian, African, etc.)? It would be neat if you are looking for a challenge.
I’ve done one from our international market but not a specific ethnic store. I like this lunchbox but I do wish it was bigger. This is a bit limiting. It works great though.
H-E-B are the initials of the son of the company's founder. His name was Howard E. Butt. We love H-E-B. Large stores with a great product selection, spacious well-lit aisles, and friendly helpful employees make the experience just about as good as grocery shopping gets. They've got a large variety of store-brand products which are available at really good prices. There's also huge selections of high quality products in their deli, including things like served-hot butter tortillas. Although we lived in the DFW area of northeast Texas for over fifteen years, we now live in South Louisiana. We still have kids and grandkids who are in the Dallas area and the Austin area. Whenever we go to visit, we make it a point to shop there. A friend who is originally from the Beaumont area has lunch once a month with some former coworkers, friends, and fellow ham radio operators. There's a very nice H-E-B just one mile from the restaurant where they regularly meet. Whenever we go (which is about a two hour drive), my wife places an H-E-B curbside pickup order the night before the trip. After lunch, we scoot over and our groceries are delivered curbside.
Appreciate the HEB vid. Just had a new one open near me. Previous one was about 25 miles away. TBH haven't went to it yet, been crazy busy since opening beginning of April. Will visit it soon. Which one did you visit? Thanks DBA!
Sorry about your camera but I didn't notice much difference. I will have to check out these stores in Texas when I get down there. I live in a small Canadian city so the best we get are the regular grocery stores and a Wal Mart super center.
If you’re ever on the east coast (VA, NC, SC mostly) you should give Food Lion a try. Nothing special and probably won’t be much of a challenge, just a regional grocery chain.
Ah, the chocolate bourbon biscuit... As a Brit, I'm contractually obliged to enjoy them. I can't eat chocolate any more (thanks, body) but I remember them fondly! 😅
Have you ever thought about putting in some energy gels in your packs??? I always have several in my packs as well as some in my MRE bags.. Wal-Mart has several different varieties back in the sporting goods section..
You should try Wegmans. They advertise having 100+ stores in 8 states. They’re based in NY but have recently expanded down the east coast as far as North Carolina (NC has 4 all in the Raleigh area)
The first store was founded in 1905 by Florence Butt. Her son was Howard Edward Butt. ( HEB )

Have you ever done an MRI from a Piggly Wiggly supermarket?
I'm starting to hate your videos because I always find something on them that I want to try (you cost me money lol), but I'm a keep watchin'.🤠
Have a great week.
JT
So we have a love/hate thing going on 😂. I haven’t done the Pig yet but I think there’s one just across the state line from me. Might have to give it a go.
Hello again. I am Jewish, so I think I can make this comment. Maybe H*E*B is Jewish owned? Great video, as always. Think this one will make it to my favorites playlist as a re-watch. Made me really want to visit this store and look for some of these items. Thank you again for an excellent video, and please keep 'em coming
Thank you so much. It’s definitely one of my favorite stores so far.
Thank you! So glad you liked it.
I need new glasses anyway I thought it was just me . I wish our local stores had a wider selection of the Hereford pouch meats. We have meatballs and the taco filling ones. Great video other than a convenience store you've covered every store we have in our area in Florida.
I haven’t tried the taco filling yet. The meatballs were ok, but not great. That brisket really surprised me.
I usually add hot sauce and banana peppers to canned chili but I bet that jalapeno rice mixed in the chili would have been good as well.
For sure it would!
Rock On!!
🤣
Here is a comment for your UA-cam algorithm
I’ll take it!
Very interesting items, all new to me, except for coffee brand. Sorry to hear about equipment damage.
That’s a risk of doing anything with camera gear. I just hate it was my favorite lens. 😔
This was GREAT!
I can imagine you’re looking for any excuse to get back to Texas so you can shop at HEB again. lol
Absolutely!
#2 looks like a good MRE for someone working outdoors and burning calories. #1 looks like lots of nutrition too.
Absolutely!
God blessed Texas with HEB.
For real!
Another drink you can try is the keurig cappuccino kcups. You can just open them up and pour the contents in your hot water.
I haven’t tried doing K-Cups without the Keurig but I may see what happens when you try alternative prep methods.
This will only work with the cappuccino as it is a powder mix, not a ground coffee.
And they can be used for medicine and first aid as well as for bartering.
@@dadbudgetadventures indeed also very wise information! 👍
Thanks!
Amazon does sell oxygen absorbers that you can toss in with your MRE's before you seal the mylar bag
I have some I got for dry packing storables. They are great to have on hand.
was overnight stocker for HEB 2 years just shopped there a few hurs ago lol
I loved that store! Need one closer to home!
DBA, no need too apologize for broken camera gears, that happens if you have been around a bit.. You made due with another camera/lens even if video quality wasn’t the best.. I hope you can fix or replace the broken one, much luv friend, from Tokyo,Japan.
Thank you so much!
Fan of sweetened condensed milk packets, way more expensive than a can, but single serving. Will have to try the brisket. Always a fan of the Indian meals with rice, so many options, and yes, adding meat is trivial for those who want: chicken, tuna, beef, pork, etc.
Those packets are a game changer for people who travel with coffee. Much easier to keep up with.
we have chocolate bourbon sandwich biscuits in UK made for dunking in hot tea, I use the 'one cup' powdered soup pouches as a way to bulk out the calories in Ramen only by a small amount you get a thicker richer broth, trick is to match the soup to the flavour pack in the Ramen
That’s a great idea!
Glad to help where I can!
I would definitely go out of my way to shop there if we had one closer to us. It’s an amazing place.
The nearest HEB is 90 miles! They are amazing!
I’d drive that to go there. For me it’s about 600 😬
I buy 3 in 1 instant coffee at the Asian market really good stuff
I’ve heard tell of it but have yet to find it in my area.
the peanuts are pronounced Ha-Po-Nes and it means Japanese style peanuts, which should be coated with a thin shell and are very popular in Mexico.
Thanks for sharing!
Add a pinch of salt takes the bitterness out. Love your videos
Good idea. Thanks!
Appreciate the HEB vid. Just had a new one open near me. Previous one was about 25 miles away. TBH haven't went to it yet, been crazy busy since opening beginning of April. Will visit it soon. Which one did you visit? Thanks DBA!
This one was in Plano. It was the closest to where we were staying in Irving.
Sorry about your camera but I didn't notice much difference.
I will have to check out these stores in Texas when I get down there. I live in a small Canadian city so the best we get are the regular grocery stores and a Wal Mart super center.
It’s a risk of the trade I guess. I can’t wait to go back to Texas and hit up HEB again. That place is so cool.
If you’re ever on the east coast (VA, NC, SC mostly) you should give Food Lion a try. Nothing special and probably won’t be much of a challenge, just a regional grocery chain.
I do some camping in NC once in a while. Might see if I can find one while I’m there.
@@dadbudgetadventures they were started in NC, pretty plentiful here
Ah, the chocolate bourbon biscuit... As a Brit, I'm contractually obliged to enjoy them. I can't eat chocolate any more (thanks, body) but I remember them fondly! 😅
I’ll pick up that burden for you. Gladly!
Have you ever thought about putting in some energy gels in your packs??? I always have several in my packs as well as some in my MRE bags.. Wal-Mart has several different varieties back in the sporting goods section..
I have not. Might need to look for those.
You should try Wegmans. They advertise having 100+ stores in 8 states. They’re based in NY but have recently expanded down the east coast as far as North Carolina (NC has 4 all in the Raleigh area)
Next time I’m camping in NC I’ll take a look!
Heck ya. My wife, kids and I like our steaks cooked medium rare but not opposed to a vegetarian meal at all. Tell those haters to go pack sand!
Maybe they get so much meat it makes them go primitive. Hmm…
HEB is everywhere near me, the best version of the nuts you had are the plain japones with a small amount of Valentina hot sauce 🤌🏽
Sounds pretty good!
We call it H-E-B but sometimes we call it HEEEB. And yes, HEB is an awesome grocery chain. I miss it so much. We have nothing like it in Japan.
Or anywhere else apparently. That place is amazing!
I think it stands for Here Everything's Better. My mom used to call it the Hebrew store.
Cool! Thanks!
I love bourbon creams
Good stuff
Bourbon, France. French style cookie.
Whatever the case, they are dang good!
H-E-B is my favorite
I so wish they were closer. This place is amazing.
I love shopping at HEB
It was pretty impressive
