Some might think being part of one of the most important Grunge bands is enough - but not for Matt Cameron. Besides having been an essential part of Soundgarden's history, he now is the powerhouse behind Pearl Jam. In this video we focus on his drum sound on the Soundgarden records and how you can recreate this sound with your own kit.
If you want to use our Recreated drum sounds in your own project make sure to check out our "Sample & Loop Packs" available at shop.artofdrumming.com/collec....

Matt Cameron is a legend!
@ctfalci agreed about PJ. Cameron is a great drummer, the band changed after Vs.
GOAT
You captured the snare ring on Black Hole Sun perfectly. And damn it's that Zildjian Ping Ride a staple in 90s Rock. Well done. 🔥
So true about the ping ride. Those were everywhere.
@@AnodyneHipsterInfluencer , Neil Peart made them famous and then by the late '80s to early '90s they spread like wildfire. What's funny is the song that I think of that captured its genuine and unmistakable 'Ping' sound the best was "Gotta Get Away" by the Offspring.
I thought everything EXCEPT the ride was on the money. I particularly love Matt's choice of ride and how he utilises his ride for the album version of My Wave (Superunknown) & Blow-up The Outside World (Down On The Upside).
If anyone, or people here know for a FACT - what ride cymbal did Matt use to record both Superunknown & Down On The Upside? I MUST KNOW!! LOL
@@sammdylanpickup994 , Zildjian Ping 22".
Without Matt Cameron I wouldn't have ever heard about Ayotte drums.
That snare is perfection for this sound
Matt cameron is a fuckin beast and underrated as hell
Thank you for doing that! I grew up listening to Soundgarden in the ‘90s and they’re my all time favourite band. It seems like Matt doesn’t get the credit he deserves for being one of the greatest drummers to ever live.
Matt Cameron was my favorite rock drummer (by far) for a decade.
Matt has always been one of my favorite drummers and one of my biggest influences in drumming! 🤘
I’ve always been a big fan of his playing, love Soundgarden and he absolutely killed it with Pearl Jam when I saw them in September of last year
Rip Chris Cornell, absolute legend. By the way, video itself is good as always!
Big thanks to you guys, Matt is real legend both on drums and as a songwriter, but with this video now you can't ignore the awesomeness of Sean Kinney))
Hope we'll see Alice in Chains drum sound in future, cause he really kill it now and then
Hear, hear!
Sean Kinney yes please! We need an AIC drum recreation video next for sure
Hell fucking yes. Rooster has one of the most explosive snare sounds ever recorded
my top drummer from whom I have been most influenced by...hands down. And of course what Soundgarden means to me is infinite life.
I still can't figure out why Abe Cunningham has not been featured on this channel yet.
Oh yeah..maybe Digital bath from White pony album...My favourite groove and drum sound.
Awesome job!! It's only recently I've realized how much of an influence Matt had on my drumming. As a young drummer in the 90's, I was blown away, and struggled to wrap my head around such amazing performances. The drum sound on 'Down on the Upside' was absolute perfection! (Thanks in part to Gregg Keplinger!) It immediately changed how I approached and tuned the drums.
I was fortunate to see Soundgarden in Calgary on the 2011 summer tour
Yes!! Love this!! Okay Neil Peart (Moving Pictures/Signals) era next pease!!
Video shoot for this one is already scheduled… 👍
@@ArtOfDrumming Amazing! I Can’t wait!
Once again man you did a perfect job on this, Not just the drum parts but the signal chain too. I love it SO MUCH
you blew me away with how well you did this! amazing work!
Think this is the best yet guys! Just great and absolutely nailed that sound! Brilliant cover also, in the previous vid. Top work fellas 🤘
amazing as always, so much love for drums and drummers, thank you guys
Thanks!!
Love that HH wobble! Keep up the great work! Living my dream! 10 out of 10 TY
Great job once again gentlemen !
Pearl Jam... yes please. It will be a challenge with so many different drummers and drum sounds.
But their best drummer was Dave Abbruzzese!
@@Plejer1067 yes 100%
This sound sounds so good. You did an amazing job with Black hole sun
Great job! And man, those Beyer mics, I love them. Probably my favorite overall microphone company.
You guys nail the sounds always 🔥🔥
Would like to see Tim Alexander (Primus) and Matt Helders (Arctic Monkeys) too in the future.. 👍
Tim would be a big challenge😀
Yes.. The willy Wonka kit would be a pain to re-create 😅
Tim
That snare sound is SPOT on.
Please do Scott Rockenfield of Queensryche next!
When it came out i thought for years: like suicide is my favourite guitar solo ever (guitarist here) over the years i discovered: it was matt who made kim fly. Wow. Today i hear it more as a drum solo with guitar accompaniment. What a master painter. Melodic player. Lucky me, saw soundgarden and pearljam live. Unfortunateley with pearl jam he seems to play tighter uptempo straighter stuff. Miss the big loose fat soundgarden stuff.
One of the coolest song ever!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘amazing drum tunning.
You should do Tower Of Power next, great sound and drumming
Kep told me when he was teching for Matt during the Super Unknown sessions they used coated heads on the bass drum cranked up. Sounds great though.
Wow, nailed it 👌
Your recreations of drums sound are excellent, thanks!. Suggestion: please include the info about the sticks probably used by the drummer at the time of the original recording and the ones you used for the recreation. They are also important factor for the sound of drums and cymbals.
Thanks guys! When considering doing Pearl Jam, please focus on vs. & Vitalogy. As far as drumming goes, that was the high point at least for me.
Ummmmmm, ever notice how Matt Cameron kinda makes what he's doing look effortless? Hang in there!
Fav drummer of all time.
Awesome
Great video I’d like to see you do a video on the Alex Van Halen snare drum sound.
the kit used by Matt on the 98 and 2000 tours with Pearl Jam are perfect. Do you know which Zildjian models are used?
Great job. Also...proves that nothing can touch a KEP in tone!
These vids are great! I'd love to see a Jimmy Chamberlin setup at some point!
Sick👊
The intro of Flower sounds like a Dream Theater song.
Would be awesome if you guys tried Bernard Perdie with Steely Dan or Perdie as a whole!
I wonder how long it will take before the mixing video will be uploaded on the artofdrumming site, they didn’t upload any since the Pink Floyd ones.
Incredible video as always guys. As a side, those PDP snares are no joke. I have this exact same steel and the 5x14 Bell Brass and both are absolutely stellar drums! Amazing amount of bang for your buck!
My favorite drummer from the 90’s then Jimmy Chamberlin who you should definitely do in the future especially with that uber unique snare pop. Anyway Matt is forever one of my favorite drummers and again so is Jimmy.
my favorite drummer from that era as well. The snare he primarily used was 5.5x14 aluminum Yamaha recording custom.
The only way to get Matt Cameron's drum sound is to hire Matt Cameron...
Matt F**king Cameron!! 🤘🤘🤘
I’d love to see the Deftones video. Digital Bath’s snare sound especially.
Hi Pascal,
I would looooove to see you recreate the drum sound of Jerry Marotta especially the sound from the album Peter Gabriel 4(aka security) and especially the song “Wallflower”😊😊😊🥁🥁
You should do Iron maiden's sound next
Would love to see/hear a recreation video of José Pasillas (Incubus) :)
Let's rock! 🤟👉🤜
I also have a pdp CX MAPLE SERIES..24" bassdrum and they don't make these highly sought after drums anymore accept on reverb...and the maple shells are the best pdp has made...!!!!.. and also a gregg keplinger 14x7 snare i had to get
👏🏼🙌🏼❤
You should try recreating sounds from George Daniel of The 1975!
Goat
AWESOME!!. i really would like to hear a recreation of the drum sound in Grace by Jeff Buckley!!
Didn't he originally use a 14x7" snare. Or 8"? Either way i think it's cool that you proved you can still accomplish that sound with other steel snares or 6.5"
fun fact: in the black hole sun music video, He plays 4 piece kit instead of 5 piece kit.
Can you do Lukas Koszewski from Emarosa pls?
Please do Jon Theodore’s mars Volta drum sound
Ack! No Badmotorfinger? What?!?
Literally my favorite album of all time! Nothing beats it.
Does anyone know what make/model of bass drum pedal he used?
Yes. That's a DW 5000 pedal
Fvourite drummer
Also what series is gretch here???
please recreating a bill ward drum sound
Do Sam fogarino from Interpol please
It's interesting how you consider the drum sound on Flower to be more raw than Blackhole Sun. To me, Flower drums sound like overprocessed 80s drums. Blackhole Sun sounds like little-processed, natural, well tuned and recorded drums.
This is why i bought a gregg keplinger 14x7 stainless steel...period...
Sad that Pearl Jam wasn’t also in this video as well, since he’s the drummer for both.
We thought about that but most of the older Pearl Jam songs that we would have picked were long before Matt Cameron‘s time there. So we might need to film an extra Pearl Jam episode 👍
What song is it at the intro to this?
Spoonman
“Flower” Watch the entire video. The recreation process and performance are after “Black Hole Sun.” Cheers!
@@ANDREWFURLONGIntro song is “Flower.”
@@MykWazowskisorry my bad
@@ANDREWFURLONG All good, bro. \,,/
Maybe do Megadeth's drum sound from when they had Nick Menza
Could you do motley crue next
It would be cool if u guys could do a sound check without the mikes and just the natural sound.
Most underrated drummer in rock history not named Mitch Mitchell
Daniel wagner from greta van fleet next plz. day 1 of asking
Dave Abbruzzese next? Awesome job!
I like this one but the snare could definitely use some mulffing
can you please do deftones😊
The drum sound wasn't that great prior to Superunknown
