The Rock'n'Roll Hall Of Fame members Guns n' Roses are one of the most important rock bands of the 1980's and 1990's. Just two years after their formation in 1985 they released the world wide hit album "Appetite For Destruction" in 1987. With hits like "Paradise City", "Welcome To The Jungle" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" this debut album soon peaked at number 1 of the billboard 200.
Steven Adler was the drummer on this record and has a huge share in the amazing energy of their music. Here's how you can achieve a similar drum sound today.

I love that pascal wore a guns and roses in the Nirvana recreation video, and wears a Nirvana shirt in the guns and roses recreation video😂
It all comes full circle
Lol, beat me to it
It’s super funny knowing that both bands hated each other lol
pure comedy gold for those that know

Not really. But, kids today are easily amused and entertained.
The swing of Steven Adler playing is incredible.
That snare sound is just perfect
The simplicity in style and the power that Steve Adler uses when he hits the drums were so important to the guns sound , it's often overlooked how critical a drummers style and sound are to a good band , he never over played in any song , the perfect drummer for guns and he should be asked to join the band again , he's very much missed .
Aside from the sound of the actual drums on "AforD", it was, as we all know Steven himself. His feel which was almost a swing, his time, and his taste in picking fills, grooves, and beats and how to play them. His drums were well recorded but it was Steven that breathed life into both them and the sound we hear on the album. It's great to see GnR and mostly Steven, getting some love from the drumming community. The guy was no technical player but he had that heavy feel and swing that GAVE that record and "Lies" the feeling they needed.
He was just an average drummer. Don't make more out of it than it is. There's no swing feel.
@@mikeoxinya570 you're a moron. Go get some taste in real music. Troll...
@@mikeoxinya570 You're kidding, right?
@@waylong25 nope
@@mikeoxinya570 Then you should stop posting here. You obviously have no ear for what a good drummer is.
I've been waiting for this moment since the beggining of this channel. I started to play drums because of Steven Adler and Appetite for Destruction it's my favorite album ever. I always wondered how to get close to his huge drum sound. Thank you so much guys to this. Once again, you naild it!
Steven had a groove to his playing. Guns had a funky thing going on. Listen to Steven and Duff isolated and you would think you were listening to early 70's funk.
They absolutely were. Duff talks about it in his most recent book. He mentions that specifically, Parliament Funkadelic and Sly and the Family Stone were a huge influence on the band's groove. He also said that they lived close to Sly and Duff would hang out with him. It's a really interesting book, I recommend reading it if you get the chance. Another notable influence on Duff's bass sound was Prince, particularly the boosted high end. It makes sense that Duffs bass has the Purple One's symbol on it.
the snare is SO PERFECT. i don’t know what it is but i’ve never heard any snare sound exactly like that. i love the tone it has and you recreated it perfectly
I fucking love you guys for making this! Adler is forever the best GNR drummer, and there is NO comparison,
Sounds incredible. It's pretty much identical. Have you recreated Don Henley's drum sound? If not, that would be an interesting one.
Nice! Been listening to a lot of Steven’s work on Appetite, perfect timing!
Really excellent work, guys! You always manage to nail the sounds. Also, love the Nirvana video Pascal wore a GnR shirt and the GnR video he wore a Nirvana shirt. Priceless!
This is incredible! Thank you so much for this. I love the attention to detail.
One of my favorite channels because of content like this, as well as the covers. 😎
Thank You!😀
i like the cheeky nod to what brought down bands like GNR, nirvana. with his shirt i mean
Just what I was looking for! I love Steven!!!❤️
YESSS!!!! I’ve been waiting so long to hear one like this. I love Steve adlers sound. Thank you!
Can you do Neil Peart next
I thing they don’t have that much equipment. :)
They already did
That’s I’ll be freaking awesome
@@AddiKolb no they didn’t
Omg I've been asking for this for ages!!
I remember being 4 years old when my dad first introduced me to this album. We would play it full blast in the car on our way to pick up my mom from work at the time. As a kid, I was so fascinated by that snare sound, and always imagined it as the drummer hitting a giant metal pot😂 this album is what got me playing drums all those years ago
Playing Guns with a Nirvana T shirt, almost sarcastic lol
As always.. my favorite content! You guys rock!
Thanks so much!
Man this is super awesome ! Glad I found your channel !
That’s so accurate!! Friggin loved the breakdown of the sound!
Well done! You nailed that snare sound. Great channel.
Appettite is one of the best records ever released!!!
AWESOME!
Really hope this doesn’t get taken down.
I enjoyed watching the process. It sounds spot on!
Good shirt choise :)
Great work man, killer! sounds identical👏👏👏
Incredible job guys! My band and I have been doing some Guns N’ Roses covers before
Nice job as always.
Amazing. Great job
you guys are really good at this
Appreciate how Pascal had a GnR shirt on for the Nirvana video and a Nirvana shirt on for this episode
I love how Pascal is wearing a Nirvana shirt for this lol
Not finished watching this yet but very excited to see this episode 😀
First song I learned to play through was paradise city. The ending was so heavy and cool, I don't play the drums anymore but whenever I'm at a music store or someone has a kit that's always my go to song.
Very cool!!! Snare sounds awesome!!!
Always loved the big sound of GNR drums, as iconic as the guitar riffs 🤘
Yet another superb job. Great and informative video guys. Will there be a video on the mixing as well ?
Sure will be online soon
Freaking perfect. You guys should really sell multivelocity sample packs of all these.
Nailed the sound!!!!
How guys nail every single drum tone!!!!
Very amazing stuff! Hope see you doing Matt Sorum’s drum sound in the Use Your Illusion as well. It’s my all time favorite snare sound!⚡️
Jeez man have you never heard a Led Zeppelin album ! or Van Halen ? Early Queen ?
@@Cincinnatus1869Ever hear of personal opinion? Everyone hears things differently. Bonham isn't one of my favorite snare sounds. Always felt it was overrated because of people's feelings. It's fine, but not my be all, end all just because bandwagon. If we all liked the same stuff, the world would be an absolutely boring place.
Awesome my friend!!!
Awesome sound, awesome vid. Never heard of the channel, but did something I never do..I subscribed. Keep it up!
Glad to have you here!
@@ArtOfDrumming Is this telegram comment a sign of you being hacked or something?
@@TimdogQ Its just bots, we're trying to get rid of them
Yes... Spectacular!!! 🤗
The drums give so much character in Paradise City, and slash guitar of course. It is the marching sound to start a brawl, to go to war and take over a fortress, to win a game when you are down 20pts, or go to paradise city really. First time I heard paradise on a terrace loud at a party I felt a rebellion was about to start
When i was in the high school i love that snare sound, finally after 9 years i can recreate this sound because i didn't know how to recreate this sound
Loved Steven's swing groove filled. And he just natural, swagger...hope you would do Rocket Queen
tell you a secret...Hes the only drummer GnR has have that can give those tracks that feeling ...Hands down! LOL
@@AudioReplica2023 WORD!
YEEES! Thank you! Incredible job! Ah, Nirvana T-shirt in GnR video and vice versa)
A Matt Sorum Follow-Up video would be really cool.
Great work as always! A video about Danny Carey or Jose Pasillas would be cool :)
F*** yeah man! I've been waiting for the Steven Adler drum sound! Now can you do Scott Rockenfield's drum sound?
This is awesome! Great work, team! Would love to see your take on MIKE PORTNOY's Iconic Drum Sound soon. He deserves to be here too.
Awesome 👏
This is a nice recreation video!!! (also can I suggest recreating Josh Dun's drums??)
That Snare is perfect 🥲
Super!Sensational!!Vielen dank!!!!
Thank You for more video
Awesome!
Great video as always. Now lets see the sound and drum set from use your illusion era played by Matt Sorum!
If your looking for suggestions on future episodes. Pearl jam: ten or vrs, sound garden: super unknown, karivool: sleep awake
Love the channel and I'm not even a drummer
Dave Abbruzzese is always fun to watch with his splash fills
@@Plejer1067 he's one of my favourites 👍
Please do a video on Chad Sexton's drum sounds.. Transistor era would be awesome, but hell, I'd take any era! 😎
That was sick asf
Seems like a large part of the sound is the snare rim shoot?
Adler always played Sabian cymbals.
The “rock sizzle” hats he used, were
really important part of his sound. 😎
He played Zildjans in Ritz 88
Who else loves the nirvana tshirt in a guns and roses recreation video?
Damn that was good!
I did wonder about the Appetite snare sound so this is perfect. Can’t wait to try it. Any chance you might do one for the Use Your Illusion stuff? Like, how does it differ from the AFD drum sound? I have to say Adler had that swagger in his playing that drove the songs the way they did.
You should rock that hair full-time. Great video! This album shaped my music for a lifetime as a young chap leaving my Dad's discography in the 80s to find my jams. \m/\m/
Top stuff!!! I will try mixing this sound myself 👍 Please do Danzig, one of the first albums - a really unique sound!
Sorum is GREAT, but there's really nothing like Adler's groove on Appetite & even Lies. Like a lot of folks, this was the album that got me into making music. Thanks for this. I actually took the drum sound for granted on his gem. Sounds awesome.
Sub definitely earned!
Great stuff.
One of my favorite drum sounds is Red Barchetta from Moving Pictures. Tom Sawyer is also one of their most iconic drum intros and grooves. Same record.
That whole album was set up and recorded “around” the drum sound. One of my favorite drum “sound” albums of all time. ❤
Rip Neil
Kick drum sounds so good
Drumming on "Rocket Queen" is pure gold!
the snare on the record sounds like it has a frequency gate on it that rolls off the higher frequencies. I didn't hear it mentioned in the video.
Awesome work! You guys should explore Def Leppard’s Rick Allen’s drum sound next!!!
This is awesome dudes, can u do vinnie Paul’s drum sound next
Like the orignal!!! Super!!
That shirt is perfect
I love guns and roses! Could you do a Tim Alexander (Primus) drum sound? He is such an underrated drummer!
You gotta do the Black Album, one of the best sounding drum mixes of all time.
Amazing video! Please do rocket queen
Beautiful performance as always. Is it possible for you guys to do a recreation of Abe Cunningham from Deftones? It would be interesting to see what you do and how it sounds. (But it will be awesome as always)
Please do a recreation of the drum sound on Twisted Sister's "Stay Hungry" album. It's a really rough but big and unique sound that I at least haven't heard since that album!
Very nice 👍🏻
That snare 🤌
Great job!
How about Abe Cunningham from Deftones - White Pony or self titled
Amazing.... really good!!! You could do a Eric Singer Drum sound recriation Alice Cooper era. or Kiss Era...
Nailed the sound!!! i cant wait for the covers....
Dude… nailed the snare sound to a T.
Nailed it!!!!!!
Thanks
Please make an Iconic Drum Sounds about Neil Peart
ok that one will be quite challenging 🤯
“So we asked John Good over at DW to custom make us our own R40 kit made from that 2000 year old Romanian tree…” Yeah, that one might get a bit pricey.
Could you tell us about the reverb you used ? it sounds really good !
Still waiting on Carter Beauford 😁 great vid btw guys !
I got this record in 1990 and, although I play guitar, the first thing I liked in this record was the drums. I used to play with a couple of pens on the table along wirh the music
Cool, do a Matt Sorum one from the Illusion albums.
