  • Baldur's Gate 3 is the new RPG that everyone's talking about, and playing over and over. But can the same experience offer the same enjoyment after the first run?
Apologies for the popping "P's", first time using a new microphone and still figuring out the kinks.

I'll answer this question with my own experience: my first, blind playthrough is with my friends, 4 player co op, and thats my ideal way to experience anything new if possible. But this game has so many great choices and different styles of play that i have three other solo playthroughs going as well. This game doesn't NEED replay value, no game does. Besides, that concept means something different to each player. This game has replay value for me because of the choices it gives. And I rarely ever play a game more than once, with so many great games in the backlog.

you make a weird assumption about peoples motivation to replay games: it's not to fill up as much of your time as possible and to get more "bang for you buck", sometimes a game is just so fun that you want to spend more time with it.

I think that alot of the value that comes from the idea of the game being so massive is that each voice line and move you make feels like it carrys weight, one of the only games where i listend to almost every voiceline first time through. Also play elden ring its better than BG3 and one of the best single player game IMO.

With regard to voice lines, it's really incredible how thorough they were!
They've got voice lines for characters doing stuff that they weren't really intended to do.
Like, astarion has voice lines for when you have him cast healing spells, Gale has voice lines for when you make him do lockpicking, etc.
So much of it is completely unnecessary and stuff no one would have expected or demanded them to include, but they chose to anyway, and it just makes the game *that* much better!
I can't even begin to fathom how many little Easter eggs and stuff are in this game!

I think you've kinda made a strawman argument here.
I don't think people really prioritize replay value *above* quality.
Replay value is mostly just a bonus that you want for games you really enjoy playing.
What makes a game replayable, particularly with respect to single player games, isn't just about the amount of content available, but the quality of that content *too*.
Replayability is a *function* of quality, not a replacement for it.
It's not about maximizing the hours you *can* put into a game; it's about maximizing the amount of fun you can have with a game.
That said, I think you're right that replayability isn't *needed*. But it's certainly nice to have when you *really* enjoy a particular game.
BG3 is an AMAZING game, even if you only play through it once (hell, even if you only play through the first act or 2!).
The fact that you can play through it multiple times in different and interesting ways just means there's even more fun to be had if you want it.
I understand that you like playing a lot of different video games and have a plethora of new games you'd enjoy more than playing through a game like BG3 multiple times, but that's not the case for everyone.
Personally, it's hard for me to find new games that I particularly enjoy. So, when I find one that I absolutely LOVE, I would SO much rather milk it for everything it's got than move on to trying another game that I probably just won't like all that much.
To each their own, my friend! At the end of the day, what matters is that everyone's having fun, even if that may look different to some than others!

I agree with your thesis to a degree, but I think there are nuances to WHY people play things for replay value. I hate replaying games, but BG3 is the only RPG outside Chrono Trigger that I actually wanted to start again right after I finished. And that's after 200 hours. Now I'm on the demiurge playthrough and playing a different personality time which is getting me almost completely different reactions. Never have I played again with more replay value on the story front.

Nope. Great video, but I don't need an emulator. I have all the Mario's!

You’re definitely failing to recognize that most people don’t have infinite hours to sink into random new games that they may or may not like, when they can just stick with one and know it’s gonna be enjoyable.

If a game doesn't have replay value, I'm tossing it into the bin. It's a video game, not a book or film (video games should STAY as video games, nothing else). Gameplay is the only that matters in a game. Before anyone asks, no, I have no interest in Baldur's Gate.
