    couple things: one those metal ribs are there for a reason. they’re needed incase of high wind. wind will rip half the roof off.
    two the screws were 1/4 nut drivers for ease of removal incase of need of repair.
    if you added new ribs back and then sealed it would be an excellent repair.

    • @FlatRoofDoctor
      @FlatRoofDoctor  5 років тому +6

      Hi Romeo
      High wind lift is what "they" taught you and what "they" tell you what they think might happen. In my 40 years of flat roof and metal roof installations. the only "wind lift" I have seen, is that of roofs that were not fastened properly on the perimeter. No wind will lift even a sheet of paper on the ground if it could not get in from the edges. I have experimented with this a lot. As long as the edges are fastened and sealed, wind cant lift any roof up.
      But your info is correct according to Roofing Industry Standards.

    Could you put a rubber washer under the pan screw just to add a touch more waterproofing 🤔.great video 👍

    • @FlatRoofDoctor
      @FlatRoofDoctor  2 роки тому

      Yes, that would be nice, butto find a few rubber washers on the fly is not easy. If you do a Turbo Poly Seal Treatment with Fleece over a seam, and the screws get covered, then there is no need for a rubber washer. Only when you use the screws with no coating, then it is necessary.
      Thanks for the question and comment. Have a nice day

    If I needed to replace all the roofing screws would I just get new roofing screws that are a little bit longer, they are going into wood. Or would you suggest those screws you’re using and that polymer that would be exposed to the elements? Thanks for any input.

    • @FlatRoofDoctor
      @FlatRoofDoctor  4 роки тому

      If you going to use Turbo Poly Fleece to cover the screws on the the metal roof seam areas, then I suggest a low profile screw. Longer ones would be a plus.

    Sir, what do you recomend for coating a 100 year old rusty metal roof? My roof is standing seam and there are some areas where water sits after rain and the roof is actively rusting. Im concerned about it rusting through. I completely agree about not sealing in the water and you make a very good point about these acrylic and asphault coatings, but is there a good product that does not trap water? Or does one just have to let it breath and replace it after it rusts through? Im just looking to protect the metal. Thank you.

  • @V2RocketScientist
    @V2RocketScientist 4 роки тому

    How long would this fix likely last? And does it lose any kind of strength against storms? We have 30,000 sqft worth of roof space to repair that is leaking everywhere. We're not sure if it makes sense to try something like this or to just replace the whole thing.

    • @FlatRoofDoctor
      @FlatRoofDoctor  4 роки тому

      If properly prepared it should last beyond 10 years. If you add a UV protection likeAluminum Asphalt paint then it could go a long way.

  • @HiFiTown

    OK -- great video -- and really nice looking work!
    Does this PolySeal have rust converter in it?
    Roofing must be like dentistry... Ask 10 different guys and they have 10 different answers. I am not saying that rust is good... but last I checked... Polyurethane coatings don't stop rust. They will seal (like you said) and act as a paint, covering metal, which slows the rust. I don't know about this specific product... but down here in the south I see this type of stuff last....at best maybe 5-8 years if application is perfect. It eventually breaks down and hold water like everything else.... Seems like the water based acrylic paints ("Snow Coat") last the same and you can do the same thing with the fabric tape......
    Perhaps chemically treating the rust with a phosphoric acid solution, and then doing this treatment....
    But please keep up the videos and once again... nice work!

  • @eatonshomeimprovementsjoee6612

    This roof I am repairing is leaking because all they did was push the Metal roofing butting the patio roofing looks to be no sealer, no under lap or over lap only butted the slight sloped patio metal roof into the sloped house roof. I would say house slope is 5/12 pitch. So a storm came and blew the vinyl soffit ceiling down on the patio. This unveiled a problem. the leak where they joined two metal roofs had began to rot the wood at the point where the two roofs butted. The butt is over the overhang on the house. It has rot the batting 1"x 4" and it shows a little damage on the 2" x6" that nailed to the house facing board to join patio to the house. Should I slide a metal flashing under the house roof and let it over lap the patio roof before using the Turbo Poly Seal method. The patio roof is butted 16' to the house roof. Or, Can I just use Turbo Poly Seal method method?

    • @FlatRoofDoctor

      Yes it is. But that coating was applied to fix leaks, and did not work. So, to do a good job, you need to remove "paint" to be able to bond to the metal itself. Then you add the silver coating to protect the Turbo Poly Seal from ultraviolet rays

  • @RoofingFacts
    @RoofingFacts 5 років тому

    So... if done right aluminum coating can fix a leak. Just like any coating. However, its asphalt based, which will corrode the metal and cause rusting. worse still it will trap moisture on the metal rusting it even faster, just like shown above. This is (hypothetically speaking of course), both an environmental hazard, and a potential health hazard. Not even a good temporary when there are cheaper and better products.
    However, torching metal to get it off is more damaging. Metal fluctuates in high heat more than almost any other roof system. This could create more issues than it solves. Whatever protection that metal had left is destroyed, and though it's pretty, the roof is unusable for a retrofit if its allowed to continue in this state.
    Now that said, I have to say that honestly, given the situation and the already beyond repair (proper repair, that is) roof, you guys did the best that could be done. I would have done almost exactly the same given the situation, and that's rare for me, because I look at UA-cam roofing as 99% unqualified garbage. Good work, though I'm sure you already know that.
    I just really want to stress to the DIY and UA-cam Roofers that this is not something you should do, it is more of a last ditch effort to temporarily seal a roof thats better off replaced.
    Like slapping a band-aid on a chainsaw wound. sure it MIGHT buy you some time, but it's less a long term solution, and more about the customers peace of mind.

    • @FlatRoofDoctor
      @FlatRoofDoctor  5 років тому

      Hi. Your opening statement is "So... if done right aluminum coating can fix a leak" I disagree with that. Maybe you did not watch the video or your memory is slipping.
      We did not use the Aluminum Asphalt coating to fix the roof. Neither did we use tar like the people before us.
      I use Turbo Poly seal from Bergstromm.com to seal all the rusted spots and made a transition between the 2 panels. After we did that we coated the Turbo Poly Seal with Aluminum Asphalt paint to protect it against UV's.
      BTW, the silver coating your refer to that people use to paint on roofs, is not to fix leaks, but rather to protect the roof from ultraviolet rays. The added benefit is that it helps to reflect the heat and makes for a cooler roof.
      Anyway, thanks for your comment
      Happy roofing

      1. I was not referring to what you did but to the initial repairs.
      2. Actually Aluminum roof coating, while primarily used as a UV resistant surfacing and for fire spread reduction, has been used as a method of repairs for decades IF installed correctly. Is it a smart idea? No. Long-term? No. In fact, some companies have placed warranties on it to prevent leaks, but then again the industry also warrants many products that have an average lifespan of

    Those are butler panels they suck and don't warranty their roofs long when they erect the buildings. They make a kit to fix those seams but it needs to be done before the crap coating is sprayed.

      Hey Jimmy I live in the North East more precisely in Norwalk, Connecticut. The pricing around here is much higher than the rest of the country. I charged almost $10,000 for doing 2 seams of over a 100 ft each. It took me almost 3 days to prepare, clean and apply the Turbo Poly Seal. Then I decided to to coat the Turbo poly Seal a day later with Karnak Aluminum Asphalt which was not included in the price. But I felt it would protect the transition from ultraviolet rays.
      Each situation is different and therefor you can not charge the same for such a job everywhere.
      I hope that this helped you?
      Take care

    best to not have seams when building roofs. When seams leak, its rust removal, new screws, polyurethane, membrane, more polyurethane, then aluminum paint. Such a headache.

    • @FlatRoofDoctor
      @FlatRoofDoctor  2 роки тому +1

      unfortunately it is impossible not to have seams. There is no roofing material that is just layed over a roof with no seams, unless you are referring to liquid applied systems

      @@FlatRoofDoctor here in sa, we can get custom ibr metal sheets with maximum 8 meters but the width is just under 1meter. Can't avoid the side seam but if the roof is less than 8meter there's no horizontal seam. The less seams, the better.

      Yes! Dear Flat Roof Doctor, even if you've been on ladders all your life, do not take any chances and be extra mindful EVERY SINGLE TIME. My dad, who worked on ladders all his life, had a ladder on a artificial deck material when the ladder slipped. Injuries even from only the ten-foot fall were extensive and much rehab was needed.

    I like how you remove an asphalt coating and say how it doesn't work and then top off your work with the same shit. Why not put on a polyurethane, or silicone, or acrylic top coat? Something that is reflective and will stay pliable. Asphalt will crack!

    • @onekittyhawk63
      @onekittyhawk63 4 роки тому

      You don't listen very well. Nothing you said is accurate. They removed aluminum asphalt paint. They removed the old screws and replaced them with pan head screws.They put down a sealing strip. Then they covered the strip with a polyurethane coating which is pliable. He took time to explain its benefits. He finished it off with a silver coating. Silver coating is reflective. He never applied asphalt. Why? Because he said asphalt will crack.

    Metal roofs have a limited life span the must be completely replaced. There should be no seams but stepped. seams cause rusting because of capillary action of water causing rusting. Yours is a waste of money the galvanising coating has gone & will still continue to rusting ! Just put in a NEW stepped metal roof
