  • A Hat in Time has been out for nearly a year now, earning praise and even post-launch support in the Seal the Deal DLC, so it's time I finally give this 3D platformer revival a solid critique. Pardon the lateness: here's my overdue critique of A Hat in Time.

    Great video, but I also think Hat Kid’s character makes the game. She’s so happy to be traversing the worlds, how can the player not feel engaged?

      "She’s so happy to be traversing the worlds, how can the player not feel engaged?"
      Oh boy you should read her diary. Gives her more personality and more insight on how she really feels about these worlds. She isn't always about the stuff that goes on.

    Nice, a video about one of my favourite games from last year. At the moment, I prefer this over Super Mario Odyssey. Yeah, this is a smaller adventure but this game, unlike Mario Odyssey, doesn't have a single objective I hate.

      Odyssey disapointed the hell out of me. The movement is the best of the genre but the level design is lackluster. Its too focused on collecting stuff than solid plateforming and its full or filler. That being said its georgous and im glad Nintendo at least tried again.

    • @woodlands_
      @woodlands_ 4 роки тому +6

      They're not tired of it. They do want to make more hat in time. They just wanna make something else first as making just platforming stuff would be boring for them.

    • @legoboy7107
      @legoboy7107 3 роки тому

      @@emmanuelmondesir1314 Yeah, I feel like Nintendo misunderstood what 64/Sunshine was about if that's what they were truly imitating. Those games were not about merely collecting stuff, they were about completing platforming objectives within a sandbox world and you get the item as a reward for each of those said objectives. What you do in the sandbox worlds to get the stars was what they were about, not the collecting of the stars themselves, and Odyssey seems to severely misunderstand that. Honestly, most of Odyssey has been so easy it's boring for me, and trying to get all the moons is so tedious that I have more fun doing the dishes. Some parts of Odyssey did get challenging enough to be fun, but it never went beyond like World 2 or 3 of Galaxy 2 in difficulty, and only matched that a few times. Heck, just beating Odyssey any% was easier for me than freaking 3D Land, which I didn't even think was possible; the any% challenge in Odyssey is almost atrociously low.

    Good video. It may be my favorite 3D platformer of all time; haven't played Oddesy yet though. It's basically the game that we think old 3D platformers were like because of Nostalgia (like Shovel Knight is for 2D).
    It really has a lot more variety and modern touches than it let's on; like how it doesn't contain any level or mechanic that is a chore to get through that seemed to be a requirement back in the day (which in a way makes it an inaccurate homage to 3D platformers lol)
    And is takes its inspiration from so many sources; it has Mario 64 type levels, Banjo Kazooie type levels, even a free roam Jak and Daxter like level. While old school 3d platformers stuck to one style usually.
    But it still contains an identity all of its own. With all the huge open worlds and detailed graphics of modern games, I haven't felt this free or a desire to explore a game world this much in a long time.
    Like you said, it was made with such precision that there were so many out of the way platforms that were reachable with the right skill and rewarded you eith either currency, yarn, or a collectable for getting there. And most of the empty platforms were unreachable. Unlike a lot of other platformers that you can get to weird spots but it feels unintentional.
    It feels great for speedrunning as well. Many of the international routes could often be traversed and skipprd in multiple and quicker ways. Like if you were good enough you could get passed a small section with your own planned route.
    Also Hat Kid is just adorable

    Here's my critique, they should state in the PS4 and Xbox versions that they don't have any DLC or updates whatsoever. Because when I bought the game I enjoyed it and beat it on PS4 only to learn that all the dlc and features being added were pc only. A few months ago this issue was met with "we have no plans of updating these versions" and from what I can tell recently they've changed that to "we're looking into it". Don't know but after enjoying the base game despite all the bugs that left a blegh taste in my mouth considering I wanted to play it with a controller and I have a PS4 and no controller for my pc, only to receive an inferior version of the game at the same full price. It reminds me of the orange box and only with that why wouldn't you get the pc version where those were meant to be played, when I buy an homage to 3D platformer I expect it to be just fine on the console version. Compound that with owning the console version and then seeing all these updates like "Free DLC aren't these devs great?" And it's like yeah, that is great of them to release free content for a single player game, even if it's just for a few days, but how about those of us who don't wanna buy a game twice just to have more fun with their game? Other than all of that, yeah it's fun, I like the big evil noodle guy and his zone.

    The disappointment is that there are no other great platformers for the PC.
    I buy 3d platformer after 3d platformer and only get disappointment.
    Demon Turf is promising, but the demo speed run context had a much steeper learning curve. Just like hat, you're expected to maneuver in nearly impossible ways, going around things, skim the bottom of things without bumping etc... But it's a lot harder and the ability to move and control in the air is less powerful. We'll see. Maybe when that comes out it will satisfy the 3d platforming itch.

  • @Shyguymask
    @Shyguymask 5 років тому +3

    Imo the game didn't really get good until the second world, the first world was kind of bland and uninspired in comparison to what comes after. The platforming was smooth and polished but at the same time I didn't feel like it brought anything new to the table. It's definitely one of the better indie games out there but it's not GOTY "better than mario" material like people are making it out to be.

    A lil critique of your video, as someone who still cares deeply for the game and it's developer team, but there doesn't seem to be many critiques at all here? Yes, good feedback can be important too, but it would have been interesting to see ways in which the experience could have been improved. As a developer myself I look to products I love and see how they could have been made better, that way we learn and grow, and I know Jonas follows a very similar ethos. This is an old video so maybe this has been addressed in later videos, but I'd love to see a more balanced take.

    I wish you went a bit more in-depth about the DLC. It was such a huge disappointment, IMO.
    It's extremely unpolished and poorly designed, even unfair at times. Hopefully, they won't rush the next DLC, because I really want it to be as good as the original game.

    • @Chariot_Rider
      @Chariot_Rider 5 років тому +1

      Burtłomiej I haven’t gotten far in the DLC but I would have to agree. I have only done one mission but that one mission was mostly me bumbling around the ship wondering where the final piece could possibly be for a long time. Perhaps the later missions got better but I am a busy person so finishing the DLC isn’t high on my list of priorities.

    • @ketrub
      @ketrub 5 років тому +1

      @@Chariot_Rider The level you completed was the high point of the DLC. It's only downhill from there.

    • @Rpground
      @Rpground 5 років тому +8

      I disagree entirely. I scoured the new DLC world, interacting with every NPC and thing I could and it felt every much as polished and fun as the main game. Characters were still fun to interact with and talk to without losing their charm. The platforming expanded into more challenging experiences to test what you've learned throughout the game. Even that ship shape mission that expects you to so called "memorize" the entire ship. Why didn't you explore it in the first place? This is a game that begs you to explore and experience every nook and cranny.
      If the unfair bit is in regard to Death Wish, it's just not. As someone who craves a challenge out of my game, this was a welcome addition for those that want a hard mode to A Hat in Time. Never once did I feel like the missions were "unfair" in any way. The speed missions were all about the "Speedrunner's mentality", finding any and all corners to cut to finally hit that magical par time. The limited jumps were a puzzle needing to be figured out. The bosses were hard, but still had that pattern or a safe spot to manipulate.
      I don't see anything wrong with this DLC, maybe the hardmode doesn't really gel with the rest of the game due to it's sheer difficulty...but that's about it and that's just nitpicking.

      @Chariot Rider "I have only done one mission but that one mission was mostly me bumbling around the ship wondering where the final piece could possibly be for a long time" That's why you have the regular hat, to find stuff you didn't see.

      @Burtlomiej, I could not disagree with you more.
      Death Wish really added something to the game, something that 3D platformers really need. Actual challenge.
      The mario platformers were known for their last levels. Everyone praises darker side, grandmaster galaxy and champions road for being tests on how much you knew the game, but that's the only real difficult level in those games. There are so much potential wasted.
      Death Wish requires you to do your best, it requires you to know how to control hat kid. Everything is possible and designed to be possible, but difficult to pull off. That's why there's a death counter.
      Some of the levels take hundreds of tries to get, but you'll feel really great once you do get it. Especially the bosses with the new attacks and music makes the experience so much fun.
      Now if you don't like very difficult games, I can understand, but it's not badly designed. Well, there are a few missions that I don't like, but most of it is great in my opinion.

    I found it funny that Yooka Laylee is criticized to death(which i understand) but overpraise a Hat in time
    Personally i think the game is a mess I mean look at the first level there so much clutter and over design
    The bosses just seem to throw overkill moves at you (its not even hard just over busy)
    The game has an identity problem
    And Hat Kid move sett seem just over kill and kinda feels unoriginal and i can go on
