This week's Mob Monday Movie Review is going to be about "The Weight." The 4th episode of Season 4 of the HBO show The Sopranos. Michael Franzese reacts to this sit down scene, was it real or fake? Written by Terence Winter, directed by Jack Bender, and first aired on October 6, 2002, when it was first shown.

I love how Junior was all dressed up in a suit in his kitchen for a sitdown he was attending via phonecall. Lol.
I guess that was a way to show his old-school nature. He dressed up not for others but for himself to feel a certain way. Unlike Tony "don doesn't wear shorts" Soprano.

Did the red beans and rice actually miss you? You one of them people that bring tofu burgers to a BBQ? What? You go to the buffet bar and just eat salad?

You misunderstood one part of it. The "mystery" person that relayed the joke to Johnny was Paulie, he was trying to build a friendship with Johnny so he could change over to the NY family, but he was doing it secretly. That's who Tony was telling him to give up by name. Ralph was the one being accused of making the joke from the very beginning.
I highly doubt he watched whole sopranos, he probably watch this scene and analyse it and he didn’t even do that right..
@@exilovac8690 Yeah I get the vibe that none of the real ex mobsters actually watched the Sopranos attentively or fully as it deserves. But I also think maybe that's part of why the show is so good, because it's examining mobsters in a way that they cannot percieve themselves.

The Ralph call with Johnny was a prime example of knowing who your dealing with. Tony said from the start “dont say sorry no matter what”
If you say sorry it means you did something.
For a guy who didn't come from an acting background, Steve Van Zandt was great throughout the whole series.

He was horrible at acting, but that character was like a walking stereotype, never being "off" so it worked
The actor who played "Corrado" (I don't know his name, sorry) also played in Godfather 2 in '74 and he is still alive. Maybe you will make an interview with him. He is my favorite actor from the Sopranos.

That's Dominic Chianese. I think he was fantastic as Junior. He's a great actor.

Johnny's love for his wife is what made this compelling. Right or wrong, he wasn't gonna let that remark slide without saying something. I like Johnny.
he may love Ginny but the real argument he wants to have is that he doesn't want to expose Paulie, his stool pigeon in the Soprano family who also wanted to join him.

Any respect I had for John died when I saw him blubbering like a fucking girl at his daughter's wedding.
Johnny did actually tell them who allegedly insulted his wife from the start. The only thing he refused to do was tell them who told him about it. I imagine it still wouldn’t make a difference though. But anyway thanks for this video, it’s one of my favourite episodes of the sopranos and always love to hear your input. Johnny Sack was one of the greatest characters on the show imo.
Yeah, I loved Johnny Sack. He wasn't a bad person, he was just ruthless when occasions called for it, and there were definitely occasions that called for it. That Ralph character deserved everything he got and then some. The remark was just the least of it. He also beat a pregnant woman to death, he made it a point to corrupt Jackie Aprile's son, he tried to "educate" him to join "that life", and Jackie Jr got killed as an indirect result of listening to Ralph. He was bad news all around and a liability to both families. He should've been dealt with at that meeting and the rest of it could've been avoided.

Johnny didn’t tell them they all knew Johnny wasn’t there lol Johnny was told who it was by Paulie
Johnny messed up up because he has a secret source of information on the Soprano Family from Paulie, and by blowing up over the Ginny comment, he was inadvertently revealing the fact that he has a source. He didn't want to give up who it was, that's why he was being so difficult at the sit-down, and Tony called him out on it.
Good way to Summarize
I feel that he’s just using the situation to state his presence: “Johnny’s here” (despite obviously loving his wife) and getting money.

I was looking for this comment. The remark was bad but Johnny handled the situation poorly.

Funniest part of that scene: After Johnny complains his wife’s honor was violated, Carmine asks incredulously: Ralph slept with your wife?!

Michael hit the nail on the head as to why the reason the Sopranos was so successful which was the characters were relatable. Not necessarily relatable because of the mob life but because of the very human psychological emotions and feelings the characters endured. What makes the show so brilliant and still watchable to this day is its devotion to character development first, plot driven second.
I also think one of the shows' great strengths was the amount of dark humour. The scene with the Waiter,Paulie, and Chrissy is a great example.
Michael talking about Sopranos. I love it! I love the dialogue on this show. Every character has great lines on this show. Junior probably had the best. "Did you offer my nephew something to drink". Nurse "I'm a registered nurse". "Did you offer him an aspirin." Junior.. lol
While all the actors did a great job on this show, Vincent Curatola who played Johnny Sack was one of my favorites. He really had the nuances of being a gangster down because he used to work at a restaurant frequented by them.
Not only that, from my understanding he’s actually a singer, and that was his first role as an actor.
Johnny was a better Boss than Tony.

@@dr.roberts4508 That's up for debate. Tony made some better tactical decisions but was hot-headed and alienated alot of people. Sack was alot better at being an underboss and went a little nuts when he became an actual boss. The best boss in this series is Carmine, albeit he created alot of chaos by not naming a successor before he died.
@@nicholasspevak4952 Johnny Sack was better in underboss in descion making as a #2. Than Tony as boss. But Tony was better as boss than Sack.
What I loved about the Sopranos was that it wasn't a stereotypical gangster series. It was a life and family drama that anyone could relate to. I admit I've changed some of my ways of dealing with people after viewing and understanding that series. That show was and still is very powerful.
That's why the title was BRILLIANT. The Sopranos--my dysfunctional family. The Sopranos--my dysfunctional crime family.
i beg to differ. The black gangstas were all stereotypical for the 90s. The way they held the gun, to their attitude, to their tone and just what they wore. I mean its like late 80s and early 90s gangstas. And they all made huge mistakes which in real life even at that time they were ones who got away with crimes.
I've always felt like Sopranos was a character driven show that just so happened to be mafia themed

It humanized gangsters, showed that they’re more than just violence. Also showed how depraved and sociopathic you gotta be to be in that life

Mike, another great video but I have a few small critiques.
1. Jonny sack was Carmines underboss, not a capo. This might explain why Jonny sack was able to be as bold as he was in the sit down and could be why he felt so disrespected because as underboss he felt he should be treated with greater respect.
2. The question was never about who made the comment about Ginny. Everyone new Ralph made the comment. The question was where did Jonny sack hear about the joke. Little pauly told pauly in prison about the joke and pauly told John. Tony was trying to figure out who told Jonny About the comment. Everyone understood the comment was made by Ralph. Tony actually confronts pauly about telling John about the joke years later and pauly denies it.

Something to add to your 2nd point: Tony didn't give a shit about the joke. However, he suspected the same individual who told Johnny Sack about the joke was the same one feeding him information about properties Tony was selling and making money from because of the Esplanade project they shared with the Lupertazzi Family. The properties were making more money based on the increased value of the area because of the Esplanade. Tony, due to an arrangement he had with NY over the Esplanade had to kick them in for a percentage of the sales. If they don't hear about it, Tony gets to keep all of the profits. So in the end, Tony's only trying to flush out the gossiper in his Family because he's losing money.
The context is also that Johnny's behaviour led to Carmine sanctioning a hit against John

@@dustinturner1870 if I remember Ralphie was figuring to bring them in about $3M from that Esplinade shopping center job alone. Ralphie handled big time construction deals for them and tbh Carmine and Tony aren’t giving that money up

Tony would have been happy to give him Ralph, if Johnny Sack would have given up the informant (who was Pauly Walnuts.) Everybody hated Ralph, but Tony couldn't just let John flex on his family without getting something back in return.
Yea but that wasnt an option. John wasnt willing to give up his source (and at the time, his puppet whom he had been playing for inside info etc).

It’s crazy how he wasn’t even there and heard about it like high school. Just like how Tony and Ade were in the car accident and how that evolved into a whole other thing.
Exactly everyone at the table and Corrado also, knew who made the remark. The main sticking point was who told Johnny Sack the the comment was made. That's one thing I'll never understand if Johnny Sack loved his wife so much then why didn't he give up Paulie?
@@pab1381 I don't believe that for one second. Paulie was going to make sure John heard the joke, and who told it. He had a standing beef with Ralph. Whether John had already knew about the joke or not, wasn't important. Paulie wanted John to step on Ralph.

The reason you think you remember "Johnny sending paulie things in prison" is due to that scene when john takes paulie to lunch right after paulie gets out of jail. Johnny asks "hows the mouse?" Paulie says something to the effect of "delicious. The shit you miss when your inside, there was a week where i woulda killed for some good and plenty's" johnny says "you shoulda told me, i woulda sent you some". Johnny did however pick up the phone when Paulie called collect. Yea he was playing paulie for quite a while.
I'm glad to hear that Michael has finished watching the series. He should do a season by season review when the time is right. He should also have a sit down with Vincent Curatola. Thanks for another interesting video!

The issue wasn’t that Johnny wouldn’t tell Tony who made the joke, it was that Johnny would not say who on the inside of Tony’s crew was the one who told him that the joke was made.

Johnny’s name was Sack, not Sacks. It was a nickname based on his surname of Sacrimoni. He was also the underboss, not a capo.
Exactly I love Michael’s channel and he is very insightful obviously he lived that LIFE but the thing is he doesn’t know the facts on the Sopranos show and it shows not only that but people have been killed for much less in the Mafia there is petty people in every ethnic group and like he said before something small can turn into a big issue but what do I know I’m just a Mexican from Texas lol I don’t take it too serious but it definitely is something he should improve on his channel have a good one.
The irony that wasn't lost on me is that nearly everyone in that sitdown except John Sach himself heard what Ralphie said because they were there and they all laughed at it. LOL!

My dad was a drug addict for 30 years, (heroin mostly), never been involved in anything "organized", was around some shady people back in the day and got himself into some problems over dealing and smuggling here and there and did some time in prison but nothing major. just like in your case it is a miracle the dude is even alive when everyone around him including his brothers and sister was either dead, mourned loved ones, or lost their minds. and just like you he's a fantastic speaker. got clean 15 years ago when i was like 10 (he's 63 now) and ever since he got clean listening to him telling me stories about his previous life's mischiefs has been treasured hobby of mine.
Other then my dad you are the second old ex crook i like hearing stories from.

Michael, first off super happy you finished The Soprano's. Personally its my favorite TV show ever (and theres a long list of ones I enjoy). Love your take on this. Always good to know what movies and or shows portray the life correctly. Makes shows like The Soprano's that much better when you know that its mostly authentic! For the sake of dramatics and TV, obviously its not all accurate, but I would have to imagine we all knew that before. It is good to know that they got a lot of things right though!

I love the scene in the Weight where Carmine is sipping coffee while Johnny Sack is ranting and raving about what should be done about Ralph's remark. Tony Lipp played old school boss Carmine brilliantly!
To successfully negotiate you have to be prepared, know your adversary and bring something to the table. It's a lot easier these days to research a person or company for example when going for a job. What you know about the other person will give you the upper hand even if you only hold that one card. This was a great video on the subtleties of negotiation.
I’ve only just discovered this channel.

Tony shouldn't have hit a made guy, but that made guy killed somebody practically in public, at their place of business, putting them at risk while there was already heat on the family, and the LIED to the boss's face about it.

The sopranos is probably the best TV series ever made. The casting was perfect from Tony to Pauline, Silvio, Bobby, Phil leotardo, the physopath Ralph, hard man Richie and one of my favourites Johnny sac played by Vincent curatola,, Michael if you get chance have a listen to some of Vincents you tube interviews. Most of the cast already knew each other and had friends in that life

The writing is superb, you can really imagine guys talking like that, however at the I was not sure if it was a comedy as some things were just too funny.. I mean real life is funny too.

I worked over 30 years in outside industrial sales. It is an acquired skill to really listen and observe the vibe coming from the other side of the table. Be patient #1.
The whole reason Johnny Sack was as upset as he was, was because he truly believed his wife was struggling and doing everything she could to lose weight. He eventually totally dropped revenge when he found out his life was lying to him and sneaking junk food. The reason he also didn't want to say where he got the info was because he didn't want to give up the information he was recieving by giving up Polly. Though everything you said was absolutely true.

My psychologist was Sicilian from Sicily. One time this other patient in the waiting room was getting emotional. He just said, "Relax," with calm confidence and finality. And that was that.
Great scene, and Junior is effortlessly hilarious, as always. I remember questioning them using the phone, but I just went with it because Sopranos is so incredible it earns the occasional pass for things like that. And the metaphor of Junior being on the outside while Tony was the real boss kinda made up for it.
The actress who played Ginny was a brave person because she knew that things like that were part of the script.

I was always blown away that Johnny got up from the table that abruptly myself, and nobody ever talked about it. I just brushed it off. Nice to see someone else caught that. That was a big take away.

@@mr.onethirtyeight5088 I took it for what it was. There was so many hints in that scene. The writer really left it up to the person watching. On a different day, I could imagine Tony looks up and smiles. All up to the watcher.

I work in corporate IT profession and the concept you analyzed in this video is so relatable such as when we are coming back from negotiations and things are not written down and evidenced. In many situations, unverified/easily challenged information raised by stakeholders can get us out of a situation that could otherwise escalate and become problematic. Definitely recommend this channel to other people my age that are young professionals and entrepreneurs.

It's funny how a sit-down mirrors, in some respect, a courtroom. Swap out the word "allegedly" with hearsay (an out-of-court statement offered to prove the matter asserted-inadmissible unless it falls within one of the exceptions) and you get the same result. I could listen to this guy talk about the sopranos all day! There's so many great moments to cover! I mean, those of us who know about Ralph know this is just one of MANY incidents Ralph is involved with.
Honestly, I'd love to hear more of Michael's thoughts on Ralph. Hell, I mean the whole series is chalk full of moments that I'd love to hear his opinions on. The Tony B arc is the first that comes to mind
Yes but he has totally missed the whole thing. He is talking as if the question was "Who said the thing about Ginny" and that was not the case at all. He hasn't even seen it. Guy is a snake oil salesman

Micheal should do a series of Sopranos scene breakdowns. It would boost the channel big time.
When you have to negotiate like your very life depends on it really does sharpen those kinds of skills for real life. It also shows how good a negotiator you have to be to have survived the life in the first place.

To be honest I’ve grown interest on the whole subject of mafia mainly after watching The Sopranos. And of course, my love and respect goes out to the one and only, the great actor and a great human being, Late James Gandolfini. 🖤

Good analysis. I’ve been learning over the past 20 years, to pick my words with extreme care. I used to say things that would unintentionally hurt my friends, and no one would tell me. Once someone starts at two, I’ll try to learn. Not being able to see facial expressions and body language quiz me as a disadvantage, but I’ve got some pretty good at hearing things in silence as well as words.
I had never intended to watch the Sopranos, but I think I may change my mind.

Sopranos is the best Television ever produced. The series transcends television.
Whether it’s realistic or not , I rewatch the Sopranos every few months . By far one of the best series of all times . And one of the funniest too.

Hello Michael, long time viewer. Around 6 years now ever since I saw "inside the mob" on history Channel. You talk about the dangers of gambling and getting in deep with the wrong people. Was wondering if you could cover and analyze the David Scantino (played by robert Patrick) episode of the sopranos for accuracy on those type of situations.

It is so sweet how Johnny Sack loves his wife so much. His daughters too. They had their own level of dysfunction but I think he was a better husband than a lot of them. Thank you Michael for all your expertise & opinions. Also that you always are grateful to Heavenly Father. God bless you. Kathi
I think Johnny was so focused on becoming boss, he had no intention of being distracted by women. Even his wife wasn't attractive. He was almost asexual, I can't think of a single scene where he says something sexual in nature about women.
