Near space ballooning 2015 with a Glider

  • We started this project in the course of the "Global Space Balloon Challenge" 2015 ( www.balloonchallenge.org). The balloon reached an altitude of 31'150 m (102'131 ft). Do to a power failure of the board computer the glider has not been released in the stratosphere, so we could not find his camera so far! By the way: we've won the second rank for: "Best Photograph"

    You ever notice how it curves a ton when the horizon is above the middle but flattens out when it’s below the middle? That’s the barreling caused by the fisheye lens. To see what the actual curve is you need to catch it right in the middle of the lens and when that does happen you see how much it truly curves. Just a heads up to anyone who’s confused.

      @@christopherjames4422Not entirely true as it is visible in some weather balloon footage without fish eye lenses although it's just barely visible. Although the human eye has a much wider field of view than a canera so I would think it would be easier to see it with your own eyes at that altitude.

    If you do try this another time, you should figure out a method of using the lessening air pressure to cut the string (maybe by an expanding bladder with a cutting tool?)so the glider separates properly. I kept waiting for that to happen. Good try though.👍

    • @fromagefrizzbizz9377
      @fromagefrizzbizz9377 5 років тому

      The usual method is a pyro charge to simply burn the string. I've done this with rockets going to about 2000' - you eject the parachute, at apogee. The parachute shrouds are tied together with a loop of light nylon fishing line. A second pyro charge goes off at a few hundred feet to burn the fishing line and open the chute.
      Can be very tricky at high altitudes because blackpowder behaves rather strangely at low temperatures and pressures. Using smokeless gunpowder in a "burstable" container may be a better idea, see if you can find a high power rocket enthusiast who's up with the latest methods

    Very impressive. One thing I couldn't see, did the glider make it back to ground/water? If it landed somewhere other than the payload, how was the cord connecting them severed?

    • @GFlCh
      @GFlCh 5 років тому +1

      At 15:01 the video shows a map with the (on land) landing location of the glider marked, and the (on water) landing location of the payload marked. They are separated by a good bit of land, and most of body of water (a lake perhaps).
      The top speed indicated was 200 kph (in a thin atmosphere), reducing to 60 kph then 45 kph (perhaps the top speed was higher). That speed/tension/force could have broken the tether, or perhaps destroyed the mount on the glider or the payload.
      Or, since the whole point of bringing the glider up, and knowing the glider couldn't support the weight of the payload, they must have designed them to separate so the glider would have a chance glide on it's own back to the ground.

      The title doe nothing to explain why we did not see the glider. A very intelligent person could easily deduce that the point of hanging a glider from a balloon and bringing it to near space would be to get one hell of a glider ride. After all in the first experiment with the drone it was all about the view from the glider why don't we get a view from the glider on the balloon drop. We got to see a popped balloon fall from space and land in a lake like a piece of space junk. The description below the video does a little to explain what was going on but not in enough detail to explain to those that might be victims of "click bait".

    10:10 - "Mind the contrails!" ...Yep, you are directly over them. So you climbed up straight through an airway and then dropped straight through it again? Seriously?

      Weather balloons, yes, not toys with LiPo batteries to post videos in youtube. It's not for you to decide what is safe and what is not when it comes to other people flying in aircraft.

      A High Altitude Balloon (HAB) license is $5 from the FAA, is good for 3 years, and can be obtained by anybody who bothers to fill out the form. There isn't a lot of danger from balloons and gliders guys, calm down. They aren't even required to notify anybody of launches if the payload is less than 4 lbs.

      Dudes, there isn’t much air at 70,000 feet. If you wanted a glider to stay up there, you’d need wings 3x as long. It was mostly there to guide the plane back to a retrievable position.

    Thnak you so much in taking us along. This was both generous and kind of you. That balloon glider really got quite high! I wanted to know, on the glider, did the camera video-take-up fail? I thought that I had seen a micro camera mounted on the top of the plane. I'm guessing that the glider video would be shown later, if it was recorded, as money does not grow on trees. Thanks so much once more, your efforts are very much welcomed.Dan
