You could try something like 5 of these in series (assuming your off load voltage is around 20 or so volts but the is no balancing circuit but you could try it to see if it makes a difference and then protect them with Zener diodes. This model doesn't meet the criteria to fly over clouds or in poor weather conditions but is the answer that is possible to fly without batteries for many hours in good weather conditions, just leveraging solar energy. To fly in extreme conditions or very high altitudes, you develop a model larger than this, using different materials, for example expensive carbon fiber, add batteries that working in backup mode, engines replacement, electronics;wind is different at 5000ft than 300ft and need different airframe but yes it'is possible!

About the power, you can have about 115W continuous and about 145w peack, but we can provide best solar cells in the market and increase it if needed. The wing profile is optimized buy us. THis is the sencond solar plane that we do. The third is not in UA-cam and the fourth will be the best and very efficient.
If you have an idea that you want to develop we can support your project with solar cells and we also have a CNC machine for cutting polystyrene wings.
Thanks
@@MrwattEu your claim of profile optimization means, Nothing. a BETTER profile would make more LIFT, and, probably, would increase payload capacity. your use of incorrect terminology and lack of acknowledgement of the accurate profile-related information provided, does not inspire (my) confidence. googletranslate
@@daviddavids2884 Hello DAvid, thanks for you precious comments. This model is the second model that we made, in few days we'll publish the new model that isl much more efficient and very different. I'll push the tecnichian to explain and share more details on the project. Please be patient and I think we'll comment a better model that this.
thanks
bollocks on the clark-y being an amazing airfoil because it's thick. Compare it's polars to something like an e193 (~9%) and you'll see that thick profiles really aren't essential for efficiency.
Also, assuming that wing is approximately 40cm chord, it's Re at 36km/h is ~300000
"2019 Solar RC Plane"
*2005 Video Editing Quality* lmao
My country should buy some of these from you for firewatch. This is very useful and cheap. But I would put a small battery on it just in case.
It would have been nice to have a voice over describing what you did.
Hello Robert, we'll try in the next video for the 4th version of ouur solar plane. My english is poor but we'll try!
Looks like an amazing project . Well done 👌🏻. It looks very unstable though . Why the choice for a straight wing without elevator ..?
You can also see the proportions of the plane dont look good. Short tail, long nose, no angle on the wing, bad ratio on the wing, the wing spann should be way longer, and the cord should be smaller for higher performance. They should have taken an existing glider design and put solar cells on it.
Great for Monitoring.....
yes for sure!
Hey, what specific BLDC motor are you using in this project?
is high performance motos 3S that we supply at 12amps like showed in the video
@@gianluigimicheletti3880 I think he wanted to now the size, the kv rating and the name and model.
Ot did you build the motor yourselfe?
I also love the music who is that? Sweet dream.
This much optimization is increadiblly hard, this is a great success
Thanks a lot
We developing new model like glider, very optimized and best version. Can load 500gr and flight without battery too, you can add backup battery and in flight recharge!!! See you soon!
I'm no expert but shouldn't the tail of the plane be longer to increase stability?
hello, yes for sure! This model flight good but the new version are better. Yoiu can see the version 3 and the version 4 (like glider) in developping. Thnaks for your comment
progetto STUPENDO !!!!!!
Grazie! Spero che ci seguirai ancora. Già abbiamo pubblicato il modello 3.0 di questa estate e siamo in procinto di pubblicare la versione 4.0 almento la prime prove senza celle soalri ;-)
Ciao
@@MrwattEu assolutamente !! Interessantissimo
Great stuff man , any resource where you got those beautiful solar cells? I might build a fast electric jet drone like a B2 completely covered with this stuff ..
Hello, thanks for your comment! We use Sunpower solar cells. We are custom solar panels factory ad ne hace A grade solar cells best efficiency. You can find it in our web
Thanks
Yeah AtlantikSolar built a solar plane a few years ago which clocked 2338km and 81.5 hours (4 days and 3 nights) continuous flight. Check them out
Edit: here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/8m4_NpTQn0E/v-deo.html Looks like they only had to land due to bad weather.
Incredible, Great Job,
Thnaks
It looks very sketchy on the elevator. You need a longer tail with an elevator instead of elevons.
Hi, it is quite precise, but surely with the longer tail it works better ... you can see version 3.0 in our video with the longest tail ... In addition to this we are doing 4.0 with the structure of a glider, still better .... Thanks for your comment
9A not 9Ah 11a not 11Ah very great Plane congratulations
Thanks
this is fantastic honestly. wish i could build something like this but my glue gun skills are still at lvl 1.
Please use super cap to maintain the output
Hello, yes it is possible but our target was flight without batteries.... With supercap is simple ;-)
this plane weighs how many kilos ready to fly and its engine has how many kilos of thrust
this model cannot get load, but we Made bigger for get load
very good work BUT.....i am sorry u have alot of aerodynamic problems and very big center gravity problem this plane wings must be longer than it has.
Then u will have more area for solar power. And more balance.Tail must be longer becouse head always give a direction down when u want to fly.
Hello Burak, you are right, we alredy correct it like you said, we made version 3.0 and published the video and now we making a new one like glider!!! Thanks for your comment
ok so i am confused so on the thing it says its 299,00 € what is this in usd
nvm i figured it out its only 420 usd
it is about 330USD
ive been wanting to see a thing like that
What if you made a bedini motor or low current pulse motor with battery and solar, it could fly 24/7
Hi, our goal was to fly without a battery and to be able to load some instrument weight. However, from there, you can do everything and even what you say. It's a great project and it's just the beginning. Thanks for your comment
..Complimenti
Grazie!!! è Roberto che è un grande.
Are you using mppt charge controller?
A small 4oz battery or super cap would stabilize the power output!
HEllo, yes for sure! Lot of people use batteries and charge regulators but finally, the battery discarge and you need to landing. Our target was flight without batteries, others are simple to to.
Ciao
@@MrwattEu Hi, a small super capacitor will allow the solar panels to charge for the short intervals when the motor is not drawing current. This may increase your efficiency a bit. I am talking small , under a farad.
@@veronicathecow Hello Veronica, you are right. Have you a scheme of this? We can add it in the new model. Thansk for your comment
@@MrwattEu Hi, it would just be in parrallel with the motor. You will need one that will take the peak voltage of the solar panels at no load. Like with lithium cells they can get unbalanced. You could try something like 5 of these in series (assuming your off load voltage is around 20 or so volts but the is no balancing circuit but you could try it to see if it makes a difference and then protect them with Zener diodes. Not sure how much that would weigh. There will be smaller capacities which might do just as good a job. Trial and error I am afraid. Good luck and thanks for making the video.
@@veronicathecow Thank you very muche for your explication!
Really nice plane. But on long flights a small cloud patch can send it spiralling down to earth.
Its very good aerodynamic. It continue flight log time with cloud and without battery, but for safety, we can add small backup battery in the nexts for long range flight. Thans
Hey what about flying this plane above the clouds 😊
@@vijaychandra91 Nice idea but this plane will need lot of modifications for doing that. Clouds can be as high as 5000-25000 ft with jet streams and all other stuff we ll need a very powerful plane.
Hi, you're right and we're really glad that our video is gathering your interest, thanks for that!
@@MrwattEu thnq for ur reply and u done impossible as possible u flew a plane without batteries and u can definately modify this plane to fly above the clouds 😊 normal fuel plane have a difficult situation flying above the clouds because there is less oxygen for combustion and ur plane doesn't need any oxygen
Reflex airfoil?
it is autostable
Which electric motor was used? link?
I wonder how scalable this is. Could you fly a man in a solar ultralight?
This idea is very awsome .. maybe this idea can implement for surveillance big scale area monitoring next future 😂 just in my dream maybe someone can make it happen soon
Thanks a lot
yes for sure!
A*h is a measure of capacity, not current.
right both... the consumption is measured in Ah too
It's amps per hour. It's current
@@peterzingler6221 thanks to explain it to the rest of the world! ;-)
@@peterzingler6221 Current is simply Amps. It's an instantaneous measurement. If 1 amp flows for 1 hour, then 1Ah has been used, or is a battery can supply 1 amp for 1 hour, its capacity is 1Ah.
Ampere is charge/second. 1 Ah is how much charge has been transferred in 1h (I'm a physicist)
how were you controlling it ..... I mean by Arduino or something else ??
it is standard RC control nothing special at moment.
Thanks
Happy New Year 2023
I am interested in this Solar Plane to make an autonomous UAV Fixed wing to maintain the battery charge for long range flight
do you have that product for sale?
good am sir may i know what kind of wings and budy that u used.?
autostable

ehehe shold be good!!! I'm sure that some days it ll be done. Thanks
@@MrwattEu " It could be done, at the POLE... would be an awesome project, flying in antarctic summer at a radius of ~230km from 90 degrees south that would match a speed of 60 km/hr for a 24 hr trip around the world. - not sure if gps works well down there.... need a good inertial system lol... This would be a really ambitious project !! We need to do it in several steps, for the moment we are on the right track :-)
The earth is 24,000 miles in circumference. Since there are 24 hrs. in a day, the plane would have to fly 1000 mi. per hour to stay in sunlight at the equator, but less at other latitudes.

it can drive 600km but how far can it fly?
Far dependig on your receiver and transmitter. This plane can works more than 10 hours in summer without batteries and sunny days and speed is 60-80Km/h
What kind of cells are those?
Hello Francisco, the only usables cells are the Sunpower maxeon that are seiflexibles and are the best efficiency in the market. We have that cells in our web site. Comuqnue is a good idea!
Could you share the motor brand and specs? Thanks
You need a stable model first, or a better pilot, or both.
We are making a better model, The pilata is the best in the world :-)
Looks a bit sensitive on pitch... You might wanna add a horizontal stabilizer or canard!
It’s inspiring to see a modern day thinker.. I was telling my friend about doing this 10 years ago. It’s the best thing to happen to the RC plane hobby since the brushless motor.. It would be a great addition to adapt this to sail planes/ Gliders. I wish my flying buddy was still around to see what you have created. I knew it could and would be done at some point. 👍
Yes you are right,
today high-efficiency solar cells offer the performances that previously were unthinkable in so little space, in addition to the efficiency of brushless motors. These two things together allow this result is not possible a few years ago!
Fly 600km need at least 10hrs, it means sunset arrive, you wouldn’t have enough watts to keep flying.
Best use of solar pannel i have seen ever
Well done

Could it fly up above the clouds to get the radiation it needs on a permanent basis from there?
pitch problems due to design?

Great project and drone, how you manage the range on this drone? Please.
It is not right, Nasa have technology to control satellites at billion of miles and we can't control a drone for 20-30 miles.
