    • @MrwattEu
      @MrwattEu  5 років тому +2

      Hi, thanks for your comment, when there is no absorption, it is not production. You have to think that the solar panel works like a battery. Release current only when there is an energy absorbing load. The difference is that the solar panel produces energy in real time from the sun, while the battery is a store of energy.

    Amazing project !
    If you put a battery of about 2AH atleast . It would very helpful.
    What you can do to improvise on this is First direct the charge to the battery before flying. And then when your flying you could charge and discharge the battery at the same time. Or you can send it up without charging , charge the battery first in the air and then divert the charge to the panels . You could even direct 10.5 A to the motor directly and 0.5A to the battery simultaneously.
    Good luck for your project! And I will follow up on your videos.

    You should climb always directing north, so that the sunbeams are always perpendicular to the wings/solarcells, even if that means that flying northwards is at that moment not the desired direction! Even if you have to fly backwards (refering to yout actual direction/aim) for a while, you will then still have much more power for those climbs! Let´s say you fly southwards, and want to climb 500m: So you turn, and beginn the climb flying northwards. After 500m of climb, you are now 3000m further north than at the moment you begann the climb, and while your aim was southwards, but still this 500m-climb will be much easier, so that it would be worthfull, even for that you had to fly to the wrong direction for a while!!!

    • @super4jet
      @super4jet 5 років тому +3

      The height is not too important, the climb rate doesn't matter as long as you are able to climb at all. You don't gain anything from excess energy. In this case it is about efficiency, and with every minute flying in the wrong direction you loose 2 minutes as you need to fly back, and time is pretty much the only limiting factor (as the sun sets).
      If you don't care about range and want instant feedback, you also don't need to care about the direction as it probably stays close to you ;-)

      @MrwattEu  5 років тому +1

      Hi, it's true what you say, actually the ideal time to fly with these planes and in Italy it is between March and October, the rest of the year, you can fly but I spend during the central hours of the day to take the sun as perpendicular as possible

    In production the wing connector stubs should be electrical connectors too. 10 hrs sunlight should drive it way above all but the highest clouds and it`s glide in the dark could be enough to allow for most of 24 hr use as e.g. comms transponder.

    some info. proof of concept flight without onboard batteries is fine. however, in the real world, SOME onboard stored energy SHOULD be available; for emergencies et cloudiness. continuous power appears to be about 105 watts; not amp-hours. what is the most efficient use of that power. has the use of a low-wattage motor and a geared prop drive been considered. has the use of a folding prop been considered. at 2:36, amps, continuous. NOT ah. at 2:47, MODE ONE radio. yuk.
    at 3:38, the THIN profile used in the design of the wing is Less-efficient; it is, Both, low in drag AND LOW in Lift. it should be understood that the use of a reflexed profile, may result in REDUCED energy efficiency. at low-reynolds numbers, a profile thickness less than eleven percent (of chord length), does Not make very much lift. compare the clark-y (v1) profile; as designed, thickness is 11.7%. a low-re# profile Should Always be thickest at thirty percent of chord. note that a clark-y profile is intended for a zero-degree aoi mounting. such mounting is effective because, there is about two degrees of positive-aoi built-into the leading edge of the profile. it should be understood that the design of the clark-y profile is/was OPTIMIZED, for use with small, low-re# wings. at 3:45, the use of full strip ailerons is Not recommended; for use on anything other than a cropduster. googletranslate clark-y

      Hi David, I am very happy that our model is making an impact on a lot of people and it creates curiosity- All the things you said are very interesting and I say right away that in a few days you will see a new model much better than this always solar flight without betteria. Not having a battery was a challenge, but of course you can put a small backup battery if you want. In the new model without battery we will have 500gr available where we can put various instruments like cameras or other and maybe even the battery.
      About the power, you can have about 115W continuous and about 145w peack, but we can provide best solar cells in the market and increase it if needed. The wing profile is optimized buy us. THis is the sencond solar plane that we do. The third is not in UA-cam and the fourth will be the best and very efficient.
      If you have an idea that you want to develop we can support your project with solar cells and we also have a CNC machine for cutting polystyrene wings.

Short tail, long nose, no angle on the wing, bad ratio on the wing, the wing spann should be way longer, and the cord should be smaller for higher performance. They should have taken an existing glider design and put solar cells on it.

      @@MrwattEu Hi, it would just be in parrallel with the motor. You will need one that will take the peak voltage of the solar panels at no load. Like with lithium cells they can get unbalanced. You could try something like 5 of these in series (assuming your off load voltage is around 20 or so volts but the is no balancing circuit but you could try it to see if it makes a difference and then protect them with Zener diodes. Not sure how much that would weigh. There will be smaller capacities which might do just as good a job. Trial and error I am afraid. Good luck and thanks for making the video.

This model doesn't meet the criteria to fly over clouds or in poor weather conditions but is the answer that is possible to fly without batteries for many hours in good weather conditions, just leveraging solar energy.To fly in extreme conditions or very high altitudes, you develop a model larger than this, using different materials, for example expensive carbon fiber, add batteries that working in backup mode, engines replacement, electronics;wind is different at 5000ft than 300ft and need different airframe but yes it'is possible!
