Hollow Knight Steel Heart run (100% completion, permadeath, easy sub 5 hr route)

- I look like a complete noob in a few spots, and I forgot what I was doing in few spots, also, since I had just overhauled the route. It's a 3:30:00 run, though, and I've got other things I'd rather be doing than rerecording it. The only other rule I imposed for this run is to not die in any dreams, even though that won't end the game in Steel Soul mode. That wasn't terribly strict though, since almost all of the dream battles are extremely easy in this run since I don't upgrade the nail until very late. The main reason I'm uploading this is just to showcase a very easy (for Steel Heart) and very quick (for 100% completion) casual route for the Steel Heart achievement. Here's the 12% completion that I did NOT get:
-All 3 Colosseum battles (3%)
-All 4 Pantheons (4%, Pantheon 5 doesn't count towards completion)
-Pure Nail (1%, didn't get the Hallownest's Crown, Colosseum, or Grubfather pale ores)
-1 Mask (1%, didn't get the Hive, Enraged Guardian, delicate flower, or Deepnest mask shards)
-Hive Knight (1%)
-Grubberfly's Elegy and Hiveblood charms (2%)
I'll put the route in comments because it's way too long.
Overview of the route:
1.) Grab Fury of the Fallen and a few geo caches in King's pass, defeat False Knight and grab the City Crest and his 200 geo, get Vengeful Spirit, Soul Catcher, and then bench at Ancient Mound, equipping Soul Catcher.
2.) Head straight to Greenpath, use fireball skip in the area where you first see Hornet, kill Vengefly King and then the 2 Moss Knights, grabbing the 3 geo caches, collect the WJ (Wanderer's Journal) near the stag station, then go beat Hornet 1 and grab the Mothwing Cloak. S&Q (save and quit) back to the bench.
3.) Head down to Fungal Wastes, collecting the 3 geo caches just beforehand. Bench at Leg Eater, buy Fragile Strength, and equip. Kill the two Shrumal ogres, collect the notch, then go grab the HS (Hallownest Seal). S&Q. Head down, grab Mantis Claw, making sure to grab some geo caches, and then hit the switch that opens the entrance to the Mantis Lords arena.
3.) Head up, grab the WJ, and use the City Crest to open the shortcut to the City of Tears. Head towards Lemm, grabbing the HS in the rafters on the way. Sell all treasure to Lemm, head up towards Soul Sanctum (grub is optional)
4.) Grab Soul Twister, kill Soul Master and collect Desolate Dive and his geo reward, exit via the shortcut by Shade Soul.
5.) Collect the simple key, open the City Storeroom stag, then collect the WJ and then open and take the lift to Forgotten Crossroads. Collect the vessel fragment, kill Gruz Mother, buy Shaman Stone, Steady Body, and a notch from Salubra, then talk to Sly. Open the Forgotten Crossroads stag, bench, equipping Soul Twister and Shaman Stone, head up, collecting the grub along the way, open the shortcut, then enter Crystal Peaks via desolate dive
6.) Head up, collect the idol (King's Idol) early (normally need Monarch Wings), defeat Crystal Guardian, and then grab the shopkeeper's key. Head up, over and down to get Crystal Heart, cdash (crystal dash) back to the entrance, grabbing the geo rock on the way, open the shortcut and head down (getting soul here is good). Go thru the pillar gauntlet, grab the grub and open the shortcut, then head towards the DDark (Descending Dark) area. You'll have to do this without the Lumafly lantern, but it's really easy with practice. Collect DDark, then drop down into Resting Grounds.
7.) Collect the Dream Nail, open the stag station, and stag to Dirtmouth. Buy the Elegant Key from Sly, and also his two vessel fragments if you have the geo (you should). Stag to City Storeroom, defeat Soul Warrior and obtain Shade Soul.
8.) Head down, sell treasure to Lemm, then open Royal Waterways and kill Dung Defender. Grab Defender's Crest, hit the switch, dive down and grab the idol, and then either head left and down to get to Isma's Grove, or do the skip to get into the Cdash tunnel. Grab Isma's Tear, then head to Ancient Basin.
9.) Grab the WJ near the entrance, head down, and take a small detour near the tram to grab the pale ore. Head to Broken Vessel, making sure to grab the simple key on the way (don't buy the bench!). Beat him, grab the Monarch Wings, and then defeat Lost Kin. Open the Hidden Station stag, then stag to Dirtmouth and bench.
10.) Climb to King's Pass (you can buy the Lumafly Lantern on the way if you have the geo, but getting it later is fine too), head to Howling Cliffs, learn Cyclone Slash, kill Gorb, light the Nightmare Lantern, grab the idol, then get Baldur Shell, freeing the grub on the way. Head back thru Greenpath and open the stag station (you can kill the Moss Knights for 80 geo if you need it). Head down, learn Great Slash, then S&Q.
11.) Talk to Grimm for Grimmchild, buy the Lumafly Lantern if you haven't already, equip Grimmchild at the bench, then Cdash from the King's Pass entrance and airjump into Crystal Peaks. Kill the Grimmkin, then head down and get Deep Focus (good idea to get some soul before opening the shortcut... I really eff up navigating thru the lasers, lol). S&Q
12.) Stag back to Greenpath, bench, collect Shape of Unn, then S&Q. Head down and right (you can grab a HS near the entrance of the Grimmkin room, I forgot it here), grab Thorns of Agony, kill the Grimmkin and then No Eyes (try to get full soul beforehand, and hope for some double hits with Shade Soul). Grab the mask fragment, head back out, kill Massive Moss Charger, and then get the vessel fragment (grub and geo chest optional). Head down into Fog Canyon to learn Howling Wraiths, grabbing the HS just before. S&Q. Stag to City Storerooms, kill the Grimmkin, then stag to Dirtmouth.
13.) Talk to Grimm to upgrade Grimmchild, bench, equip Shaman Stone and Soul Twister, head down to Forgotten Crossroads, grab the HS at the entrance, head down, kill Brooding Mawlek and grab his mask fragment. Go thru the Goam maze and grab the mask fragment, then head back down to Fungal Wastes and bench at Leg Eater. Equip Defender's Crest, buy out Leg Eater, bench and reequip Soul Twister, kill Elder Hu (very quick if you get full soul beforehand and get some double hits), S&Q, head left thru the acid into Fog Canyon, grab the HS past the secret area at the top, then head back down and get the charm notch. Go all the way down, free the grub above the entrance to Teacher's Archives, (optional: equip fragile strength and Shaman Stone at the bench), kill Uumuu (can be 1-cycled easily, I was dumb here) and Monomon. Exit Teacher's Archives, open the shortcut, head down to Queen's station, grabbing the HS and mask shard before opening the stag.
13.) Stag to Resting Grounds, bench, equipping Grimmchild, collect Dreamshield, kill Xero, S&Q. Talk to Seer until you get Dreamgate, grab the idol in Spirits' Glade, Dream Nail the tree and collect some essence, DDark thru the tomb, free the grub, then get Soul Eater, grabbing the WJ on the way. Head left, grab the HS and open the shortcut, head towards Blue Lake to kill the Grimmkin, then go back and down the lift to City of Tears. Grab the vessel fragment at the top, (optional: collect the WJ on the way down), open King's Station and set Dreamgate, grab the HS, and then bench (equipping Fragile Strength and Shaman Stone is a good idea). Head to Lemm, sell treasure, then go down to Royal Waterways, head left, grab the mask shard, then open the entrance to Fungal Wastes. Grab Dashmaster and free Bretta, then head up and left, then down to Mantis Lords. After you beat them, head up and right, collect the HS, money and Mark of Pride. S&Q.
14.) Reequip Grimmchild, head towards Kingdom's Edge (grub optional), kill the Grimmkin, then open the secret entrance to the bench before Hornet 2. Grab the WJ, equip Fragile Strength and Shaman Stone, defeat Hornet 2 and grab King's Brand. Cdash out and then DG (Dreamgate) out after Hornet saves you.
15.) Stag to Hidden Station, head down to the Abyss, learn Abyss Shriek and collect Shade Cloak, grab the egg (Arcane Egg), DG out. Stag to Dirtmouth bench, equipping Grimmchild, kill the King's pass Grimmkin, S&Q. Defeat Grimm and grab the notch, equip Fragile Strength, Shaman Stone, and Dream Wielder (Soul Twister is a reasonable alternative to Fragile Strength), stag to Queen's Station.
16.) Enter Queen's Gardens, set DG at fork, collect Love Key and then Spore Shroom, DG out (I screwed up and DGed out after Love Key). Head down and left, buy bench and sit. Head up and set DG at Traitor Lord/Marmu fork. Head left and down, kill Marmu and open Queen's Garden stag, DG out. Kill Traitor Lord and collect half of Kingsoul, S&Q.
17.) Equip Grimmchild, Shaman Stone, and Soul Twister. Head down into Deepnest. Set DG at fork, head left, talk to Brumm, kill Herrah, open the stag station, making sure to sit at the bench just after Herrah (important!), stag to Stag Nest, grab vessel fragment, head out to Howling Cliffs and grab Joni's Blessing, then meet Brumm at the Lantern and Banish the Grimm Troupe. DG out. Grab Weaversong, freeing the grub on the way if you've skipped all 3 previous optional grubs, head down and set DG at fork (I forgot to do this), head up and kill Galien, DG out, kill Nosk, freeing grub on the way, collect the pale ore. DG out, set DG at beginning of garpede maze, grab Sharp Shadow, DG out, head up and grab the vessel fragment, S&Q.
18.) Stag to King's Station, bench, equipping Shaman Stone, Soul Twister, and whatever else you want. Head to Kingdom's Edge, set DG at fork, head right, learn Dash Slash, then head down and collect Quick Slash, DG out. Head up and left, defeat Markoth (super easy if you fill up soul beforehand), head up and left, set DG in Tower of Love, head back to Lemm, sell treasure, then upgrade Nail to +3. DG out, kill Collector, free the 3 grubs, S&Q.
19.) Stag to Dirtmouth, bench, buy Wayward Compass from Iselda and collect the mask shard from Bretta's House. Collect Grubfather rewards. S&Q, stag to Forgotten Crossroads, bench, head to Salubra and buy everything but the final charm notch, S&Q, equip Fragile Strength, Shaman Stone, Dream Wielder, and Soul Twister (optional: it's a bit faster to grab Glowing Womb and kill Forgotten Champion here). Stag to King's Station.
20.) Set DG near the chasm entrance, head towards Watcher Knights, open the shortcut, then bench. Head left, open the shortcut, then go to Soul Sanctum to defeat Soul Tyrant (you can use Cdash to make the trip much shorter, as in the video). S&Q. Kill Watcher Knights, collect geo from the chest and the HS, kill Lurien, DG out.
Head into chasm, defeat White Defender, DG out. If you haven't done so already, stag to Forgotten Crossroads, bench, grab Glowing Womb and defeat Failed Champion. S&Q.
21.) Stag to Resting Grounds, talk to Seer until she disappears, stag to Hidden Station, Dream Nail the Kingsmould, go thru White Palace (lots of shortcuts!) and collect the other half of Kingsoul. Cdash back to Hidden Station, bench, equip Fragile Heart, Lifeblood Heart, Joni's Blessing, and Kingsoul (you will be overcharmed, this is okay). Go to the fountain in Ancient Basin, drop 3000 geo and collect the final vessel fragment (you should have enough geo at this point), then head down to the Abyss (don't get hit on the way like an idiot, as I did! You'll have to head back to rest at the bench again to reset your masks if you do), grab Lifeblood Core, making sure to get the egg on the way if you need geo for Sly later. Get Voidheart, also grabbing the egg on the way if needed. DG out and sell to Lemm if needed (almost certainly necessary), then S&Q and stag to Dirtmouth. Get Nailmaster's Glory from Sly, then buy everything from him but the simple key and rotten egg, then head to the Temple of the Black Egg and defeat Hollow Knight and Radiance (make sure you've benched and switched charms back to Shaman Stone, Fragile Strength, and Soul Twister before the fights!). Done. Easy.

I followed your run, thank you so much! I skipped the White Castle and got 100% by finishing the Colosseum's first challenge. Finished in 4h19min40s and unlocked 5 achievements in 1 run! (Steel Soul, Steel Soul 100%, Finish game under 20 h 100%, under 10 h, under 5 h)
Wow! So, the trial of the Fool gives the same percentage of White Castle? Can you confirm it?
Since when is there an achievement for completing the game in under 10h

The guide is nice and all for the speedrun part, and its an accomplishment for sure, but after what I have seen in this game from various players and my experience, I would not call this safe at all for steel soul, mostly because without a pure nail, some of the bosses can end a run very easily. Its much easier to do the first two colo trials (which are very easy), to get the pure nail upgrade to make everything safer.
And instead of bothering with Traitor Lord and Markoth which can easily ruin steel soul runs as they are two of the worst bosses when it comes to being optional and how easy it can be to mess up, go either for the hive charm + hive knight (Can be practiced in godhome in different save - and with a pure nail and agility charm can simply be attrition spam-killed due to low HP) or go for the first 2 pantheons since being in a dream gives countless tries. This means that the kingsoul/palace stuff can be skipped entirely as well as all those pesky essence fights after 1200 essence. You don't even need the awakened nail (1800) to hit 100% let alone Radiance or making Seer disappear (2400). That's all a waste of time and effort.
While the path in the guide can be good for close to god-gamers, I don't recommend it at all to more average/decent players due to the strange choices on what percentages to skip. On steel soul nobody should be entering white palace or go for radiance that's for sure.

If anyone is doing this guide just make it easier on yourself and go do 1 colloseum trial instead of the whole white palace+radiance....

It would be very helpful to upgrade the nail earlier as this is a steel heart run, i think.
You would think so, but it actually gives a huge buff to the dream warrior bosses, so it’s really not worth it.

If anyone doesn’t want to do white palace it may be easier to just finish Pantheon 1 in God home instead.

Thank you so much. At first i had to pause the video a lot cause you were really fast and i couldn't keep up the speed, and also died to some parkour, and dumb things like 8 times. Once at the queen's gardens, which is pretty far in to the run, and that hurt. But as i died more, i kept doing things faster, and when i got past QG, i just went from there to the end. Again, thanks for the route and the video, leaving a like now!
Nice vid. Any reason why you do the White Palace-Radiance ending, tho? Can't you just do the first trial of the colosseum or go to the hive for 100%? Maybe you're doing it for other reason but I was just wondering.
I’ve only been playing two weeks wondering the same. I think it’s a time issue is my guess. Im not skilled on Radience and easily prefer colosseum over radiance . But regardless I gotta get good at her
if you miss that greenpath fireball skip up to where hornet is on the ledge, go down to the right and get the squit to dash up to that ledge and pogo it. its quicker than killin the birds

I'm mechanically not really good. Even tho I've been practicing both Colliseum and Path of Pain several times, I don't improve. I will do this run to achieve the 4 hardest achievements imho. Speedrun 1/2, 100% Steel Soul and sub 20h. Thanks for this guide, I was designing one myself but it's too hard as I'm not speedrunner
I lost like 30 mins in 41:07 part because I nearly died like 10 times lmao. Eventually got it but damn, I hope there's no more skips like that deeper in the run (still in progress)

yooooo! holy shit dude! i know this video is 2 years old but i've been grinding the steel heart and speedrun achievements for the last couple of days with a lot of upsetting failures and this video and your walk through comments FINALLY got me through them!! thank you so much for sharing!
