A few years ago, shortly after the release of this album, I attended a concert at, well let's just say a not so distant, snobbish institution with a good orchestra, on an evening when they performed Rach's 2nd Symphony. Introducing the work, the conductor sneaked in an insult to Warenberg's work. She said, "It is perfect just as it is. It needs no piano."
Well, miss purist, it may not NEED a piano, but Rachmaninoff himself was one of countless classical composers who felt free to take other people's work, ARRANGE it, and create "variations" that are masterpieces and rightly celebrated by the listening world. And by any metric, the success of Warenberg's "Rach 5" testifies for itself that it earns a place in the classical world. Witness, too, the number of world famous pianists who have performed it.

For those of you who see this as a disgrace, don't forget about Liszt rearranging Paganini or Vaughan Williams rearranging Tallis or the thousands of other rearranged pieces. A few aspects of this could have been done a bit better, but for as daring and well executed this piece is it's undoubtedly an admirable arrangement.

Rachmaninoff. Great composer. My favourite is Piano Concerto No 2. Gives a great feeling throughout, especially the delicate second movement. My girlfriend who was in depression, I dedicated it to her, and when we sat down to listen to it and heard the second movement, our love grew and she showed signs of coming out of depression. Thanks Rachmaninoff

First allow to congratulate you on taking this risk! I am delighted and surprised - it not only sounds genuine Rachmaninoff - it "feels" Rachmaninoff - the languid harmonics - the feverish outbursts , the melancholy underlying it all! BRAVO to Alexander Warenberg for his scoring of the piano part! BRAVO to Brilliant classics for again finding great talent in the artists: Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy (piano), Theodore Kuchar conducting! The orchestra provides a full, rich tapestry for the the excellent pianist! And not to forget - good technical staff at Brilliant to bring the energy and vibrant sound to live without creating a mash-up of it all. I will order my CD copy today - this is a must-have for all Rachmaninoff fans out there!!!

The second symphony can move me to tears when performed really well. (Previn, Sanderling,Steinberg, Kletzki and others) and the Rachmaninoff 5 is a nice adaption of that wonderful symphony. Not a musical snob am I and I would like to think that the great man himself would approve.

I love this! Not without reservations - Rach himself would have written a more virtuosic piano part, but Mr Warenberg has done a remarkable job of providing an “important” part which does nicely for the purposes of the project. It’s a bit difficult to get past the rearrangement of the four movements to create three, it’s rather jolting to the familiar listener, but all of this being said, I have never been able listen to Rachmaninoff’s symphonic works without missing the nonexistent piano part! So kudos to you guys for daring to do this, I must say overall it’s tremendously satisfying.

The transformation of Rachmaninov's Symphony #2 into a concerto certainly used all 88 keys if not 97. The initial listen was shocking. The second, a fantasy filled with Rach idioms as if Scriabin had strung them together for Prokofiev to play while avuncular Tchaikovsky supervised. The piano part is so intensely Rachmaninovish that the symphony itself seems, at moments, un-Rach like. Yet, I came to love it and I believe Sergei Vasilyevich would be delighted by it. It is not Rachmaninov but it's fascinating and beautiful. Бо́же, Царя́ храни́!

I really like the 3rd symphony, I've always had problems with this 2nd symphony, but it's amazing how it got more interesting in this piano concerto transcription. Nevertheless, I must say that the work does not exactly have the atmosphere of Rachmaninoff's piano concertos, it is more reminiscent of a Brahms with the language of Rachamaninoff.

I think Waremberg did a pretty good job arranging it. Rachmaninoff's Symphony no. 2 works better as a symphony, and this arrangement works better as a concerto. I personally enjoy them both because the two pieces give each one a different but incredible vibe. Despite the fact that some people don't enjoy at all or that they enjoy this arrangement less than the symphony, we can't ignore that the whole symphony lasts 40 minutes, and everything is done perfectly. Maybe this might not sound like Rachmaninoff for some people, but we have to admit it: this concerto is a complete masterpiece!

@@donnytello1544 Yeah, but by the same logic we wouldn't call this Rach 5 because its not 100% Rachmaninov and it's a symphony, but I would still argue in Glyn Evans's favor because the rhapsody is a solo instrument set with an entire orchestra, and though it's 1 movement, you can see it's broken into three parts, one at the end of Var. X, and at the end of Var. XVIII. The middle section being slower than the beginning and ending sections.

Later on, better pianists will bring more brilliance to this version. Beethoven did something similar with his violin concerto. Lets RECYCLE. Nobody wants to hear the 4th and the 1st is seldom played. So.... Purists, let the music be!!!!

I feel like the whole orchestra is muted. Its too quite, needs to be louder to fully accompany the piano. Or at least that is just my opinion....

Uhm, okay. I understand that when someone like Rachmaninoff stops composing concertos, there is a longing for just one more. It's an interesting piece, and worth a listen, but I still prefer the purely symphonic version.

I agree! The piano obligato that was clumsily thrown into the pages of the 2nd Symphony bears very little resemblance to Rachmaninoff's pianism. Rachmaninoff would have been *embarrassed* to hear this substandard schlock posing as his work!
The true "5th Concerto" is his Rhapsody On a Theme of Paganini.

Запад как обычно, занят извращением. В данном случае извращением музыки Рахманинова. Это как поверх картины Рафаэеля намалевать краской нечто непонятное. Фортепианная партия очень слабая, "никакая".
