The premiere of Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 in 1908 cemented his reputation as one of the leading symphonists of his time, and to this day the work remains among his most celebrated musical statements. The third movement, Adagio, is emblematic of many features that define his compositional language, including enchantingly expansive melodies, a rich harmonic palette, searing climaxes and lush, full textures.
While adhering strictly to the thematic and harmonic material of the original, this arrangement is less a strict transcription and more a reimagining of the movement for the piano, taking a generally liberal approach with reworking the textures in order to create a pianistically idiomatic piece. The piano writing is informed both by Rachmaninoff’s compositional style as well as my own approach to keyboard texture.
This is one of the best ever transcriptions I have ever come across in my life.
Thanks so much!
This is a masterclass in piano writing.
Many thanks!
That was edge-of-your-seat breathtaking. Thank you for changing the quality of this day...
Many thanks!
not only is this an incredible transcription, your performance somehow manages to capture the tragic beauty and layered complexity of the symphonic version. bravo
Thank you so much!
Nicholas, this really is gorgeous, the best arrangement i have heard of it yet. very pianistic and you have a very delicate touch. Thank you and God bless you.
Thanks so much!
The recapitulation with the double treble figuration like Scriabin's Second Sonata was absolutely inspired. Took my breath away. This has to be the definitive transcription of this movement. I can't see it ever being surpassed. Bravo!
Thank you so much!

Wonderful Rachmaninov !!! suuuuuuuuuper transcription !!! /// BIG LIKE !!!
Thank you very much!
A transcription like one of the old masters. Stunning.
Thank you so much!
I absolutely never comment on UA-cam but I had to say that this arrangement is absolutely stunning. The way it's written for the piano, the way it's performed... Congratulations ! It's amazing
Many thanks for your kind words!
As a huge fan of Rachmaninoff I had to stop and comment that this is one of the most amazing arrangement there has ever been. Thank you for uploading such a beautiful performance, you are truly a blessed artist :)
Many thanks for your very kind words!
The best arrangement I’ve heard. Rachmaninov would’ve loved this!
I like how this arrangement overall is inspired by Rach’s pianism, but also like how 8:25 this section sounds like as if Godowsky arranged it
Many thanks for your kind words!
It sounds more like Scriabin
What a fabulous arrangement... I didn't even finish listening to it, I was so impressed! That's amazing, bravo!
Thank you very much!
A double bravo!!! First for the magnificent transcribing work on a demanding and (as always in Rachmaninoff's works) multitextural original: it is easy to imagine hearing an orchestra and the same time it is a very pianistic work, displaying also perfectly the way Rachmaninoff wrote for the piano. Second for your interpratation: you have a singing long lasting tone on the piano and create a truly romantic sound, while the whole texture is very clear, especially middle voices were out of this world. Thank you!!!
Thank you very much for the kind and thoughtful words, I appreciate it!
I just found this and I just have to learn this, I love this movement so much! Thank you so much for sharing this amazing transcription. I needed this today
Many thanks! I hope you enjoy it :)
Beautiful! I love the way it inventively combines themes too! Unbelievably gorgeous. Was privileged to hear you perform it live in San Jose for the Steinway Society last month!
Thank you so much!
Bravo! A very good transcription and very well performed, adequately to the original!
This movement is among my favourite Rachmaninov's pieces and I had not expected to find its piano version that would make a strong impression on me, but here it is, bravo again!
Many thanks Sergey for the kind words!
Wonderful arrangement, and magical interpretation !
Many thanks for the kind words!
This is amazing 😇💫
Thank you!
Excellent transcription and excellent performance!!! Congrats Nicolas !!! Greetings from Buenos Aires!!
Many thanks Alvaro, great to see you in Verbier!
Such a beautiful arrangement
Many thanks!
This is an incredible arrangement! I can't wait to struggle through learning it myself.
Many thanks! Enjoy :)
Outstanding 😍
Thank you!
Wow! Just, wow! There couldn’t be a better transcription of this beautiful symphonic music. Amazing work, Nicholas.
Thank you so much!
definitely reminds me a lot of the 2nd movement of his 1st piano sonata
Well spotted - I was carrying the Sonata No. 1 in my recital programs while writing this arrangement and it was certainly an influence. Interestingly, the Sonata was written largely during the same period as the Symphony No. 2, and there are a lot of key similarities in compositional approach.
Thank you so much, this is amazing
@@alejandropolanco5997 Many thanks!
Deserves way more views, absolutely stunning thank you for your hard work!
Thank you very much!
What a stunningly beautiful piano . . . each key like a little pearl. Really beautiful. Okay . . . . the playing was good too, but . . . dang what about that piano ??????
wow!!! this is incredible work 😮👏👏👏. congratulations
Thanks so much!
miraculous transcription!
I bought the score from muse press
and have been practicing for several weeks
The 3 hand section is very difficult but matchless
I would like to know if you work on other works.
Thank you very much! This is my first arrangement, and will certainly not be my last :) Muse Press has also just published a related work of mine, "Memories of Rachmaninoff's Georgian Song".
Lovely transcription of beautiful composition
Thank you!
This is wonderful!! Nice transcription! Your play is so sweet also...

Perfect.

Can someone tell us, where this was recorded and who the piano technician was? It's an exceptionally well prepared Steinway D.
This was recorded at Bella Concert Hall in Calgary. The technician was Matthew Moffatt - he's fantastic!
@@NicolasNamoradze It was a Hamburg D, right? If not, you were privileged to play the best NY Steinway D I have ever listened to.
@@OE1FEU A Hamburg D indeed!
Well done!
Thank you!
Hello! I'm enjoying your arrangement in South Korea. I'd like to play this song. Where can I get the score?
Thank you very much! You can get the score in both download and hard copy versions from the Muse Press website, you'll find the link in the video description.
7:15
how is that even playable
Takes some practice! You can find a live video recording of this on my channel too.
Great transcription, but too much rubato for me…
