I see 2 factors to this really. First being, Blonde cow contributes to the health of the ranch family. Her friendly nature adds positivity and happiness to the day to day work on the ranch. Second, Blonde cow is an Icon for the ranch and the channel. Seeing her lets visitors connect on a deeper level than just visiting, they feel like they recognize her and have some sort of attachment. Even I am guilty of this, I look for her and Bambi before I am satisfied in a video. So from an economic standpoint, Blonde cow is an actress in the OWL family of cows, a lead character. Since she is the main character today, maybe this video could be her rent for the winter. Thanks for sharing today, Mike. Today's video shows viewers a side of farmers and ranchers people don't see. The side with emotion, affection, and love farmers and ranchers have for their animals.
Yea well said bill. She making money/a living for him on UA-cam.and as long as she don't put on to much weight before mating season next year, she should get in calf. Cheers mate
I was so happy when mike said he would keep her. Was surprised when this video moved me to tears, the part at the end about being different makes you special. Or just the way she slowly followed mike as he opened gates for her and she moseyed through. Love this channel.
I grew up on a farm, and culling is the worst part. I'm so happy you decided to give blonde cow a second chance. Lord knows we all need that every once in a while. Keep up the great work you and Erin do everyday.
Thank you for keeping Blonde Cow. She seems very sweet as cows go! I know your viewers me included would love to sponsor her so she can live out her life at your ranch. We need Blonde Cow merch too!
Good move we had one that did that and she ended up giving us another one the following year she just didn't get covered i understand your decision Mike!
Sandi Brock sheep farmer great vlogs has blue dye on girl sheep so she can tell whether an ewe has had gentleman company during breeding. And a recent blog one girl was very popular
Mike keeping blonde cow was a decision with your heart, not a solid business choice but understandable. Sometimes getting rid of a good handling head isn't easy.
I knew an old farmer in NC that keep an open cow on his farm for 17 years, simply because it was named after his Grandmother, Miss Emily. He came up to my Grandmother's house one evening and told us she was down in the field. He waited at the house while I took my .22 over and checked her out, fortunately for me she was already gone, an appant stroke. We buried her in the family plot next to her namesake. Most people do not understand what animals mean to a farmer, they are way more than line item in a ledger.
Mike you really brought home the emotional side of Livestock that as an arable farm you just don’t get . Crops don’t have legs and come up to the camera looking so cute, or we would be in tears every time we dove the combine !!! Wonderful video keep up the good work, you are doing wonders for the image of Farmers which is something too many of us ignore. Best wishes from the UK
Oh Mike you had me going -even if I am a farmers daughter and have witnessed these decisions many times. We had pet sheep and cows receiving extra chances. You can’t get rid of Blondie. She is the ranch icon and cover girl!
Great decision!!! Blonde cow's weight is pulled in the ranch by being your mascot!!! If she leaves the ranch what cow will take her place to be the STAR??? Yes, the purpose of your herd is to produce calves but having those cameras rolling means Blonde cow gets to shine and viewers are entertained!!! Now obviously you can't do this with every cow BUT outside of Bambi no other cow I've seen in your videos is eager to get in the picture!!!! So glad you chose to give her another chance!!!!! She really is a star!!!! Best Wishes from Kentucky!!!!!
My Father was very close to his Dairy herd. He sang to them when we milked or played music for them on the radio. He was a businessman though and couldn't keep a cow that didn't produce milk. Pregnancy is a big part of that process so if a cow didn't produce a calf it was sold. Only once did I see Dad make an exception. We had a bell cow who was a Jersey cow in an otherwise all Holstein herd. She was our house cow for many years due to the higher butterfat content in her milk. Dad would call her in from the pasture and the rest of the herd would follow her and her bell to the milking barn. Her name was Jezebell and she lived a long and still useful life until the end.
Can't blame you for keeping her. My sons had a cow that they had about 17 years. We bottle raised her because her mom died during delivery. Her first calf was still born but she had calves every year afterwards. Until she got about 15. My oldest son didn't have the heart to sell her so she was eventually buried on the farm.
Mike, I know it was hard for you when I was watching you preg check blond cow. Everyone could tell you were disappointed so I think this is the right decision. It does add to the feed stress which so many are facing this year but remember you have a community here ready to engage
It’s always nice to have an older cow that’s not crazy and who knows the ropes to help bring the herd in and through the corrals. I think she has a job.
Thank you for keeping 'Blonde cow'. I am generally not an emotional kind of person, but I dang near cried when you let us know she was staying. Bless you and Erin. (PS: please keep her calf from this year back from the sales, if it was a heifer, in the event Blonde Cow doesn't get pregnant this next year, you can have a "Blonde cow baby" replacement for her going forward.
Thanks for given blonde cow a second chance. That totally makes me super happy. Greetings all the way from Africa. Should be back in town early next year. Happy Thanksgiving!
Our 11 year old had triplets last year. No matter what, she is here until she passes. She helped start the flock and will be put in a special place on the farm when her time comes. Always room for a special animal.
Yes!!! I cheered out loud about blonde cow and scared the crap out of my husband. Thank you for keeping her, Mike. You made a lot of people very happy, for what it's worth. Just out of curiosity, how much would you need from patreon members annually to offset the cost to keep blonde cow?
I greatly appreciate the fantastic job you do putting a real face to ranching--thanks much--keep it up, but for the first time Mike, you have missed portraying ranching as it really is. We often have to make that tough right decision that involves letting go of our favorite but unproductive cows. Folks need to understand they are not family pets--that is why ranching is not for most. You have to come to grips that they are livestock not people. I realize from the comments many people would support her and she may bring more revenue via Utube but again that is not what most ranching is all about. I shipped 585 this year--my only pettable cow--but she was 13 and open, old cows generally wear their teeth out and you see their body condition and calf condition go down significantly.
Well Carl I am going to say you are wrong. Real ranchers are human and although we have to worry about the bottom line we also have to worry about our own well being as well. Because of UA-cam we are in a weird situation but you should also read comments from people saying that they have done the same on their ranches. Another point is this. Any rancher when told he can’t do something, will do it to prove he can. Thanks Carl
@@OurWyomingLife Thanks for the reply Mike. As I said I do appreciate you being a spokesperson for the ranching community--please keep it up--I will continue to watch your posts. But I stand by my comment--its often tough to do what needs to be done.
I need to say THANK YOU for keeping blonde cow I know it was a hard decision to make but I think you made the right one ,I've got to say I Love Your Videos thanks Mike & Erin you guys are awsome
Glad you turned blonde cow out. Back in the day granddad had a young heifer that hurt her leg and could not get around very well. Granddad couldn’t sell her, he said they would be mean to her at the sale so he told everyone she had a home. She was a black white face Hereford, every December she brought a new black white face heirfer. Her last 4 years she was there just, living. I know winter is so much more harder in Wyoming than here in south alabama but she is one cow if you can’t f
Great decision Mike. People who visit expect to see her and Bambi on the ranch and being able to touch and pet some animals. They pay ads by free and people wanting to see and touching them . You sometimes have to take a lost to make a profit.
Glad you decided to keep the co-mascot for the channel. I can see how the black cows would be more difficult to photograph than Blond Cow. Looks like several want to sponsor her.
Many hard decisions have to be made on a Farm/Ranch but sometimes you have to go with your gut not always what everyone else does. Just like you did this year with the calf sale. Good Job Sir. By the way just finished one of your T bone steaks and Oh my it was one of the best steaks I ever had. Thanks again for putting on the Ranch Roundup. What a fun time that was.
Hey Mike! Glad you decided to keep the blonde cow..she seems very sweet! I’m glad I didn’t have to make the choice..don’t care much for the adds on your channel, but for the benefit of the ranch I watch them in full..have a great day and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
I love the relationship you have with your animals 🥰 it is sad to see some go . But that’s ranching. But I’m glad you kept blonde cow. I’m rooting for her.
Your such a sentimental guy😊 It’s nice to see the rebel show up....Blonde Cow has earned a reprieve and one cow held back will not truly impact the numbers. We don’t have to do everything by the book, that’s why ranching is so wonderful even when it’s tough.
I really do like your attitude towards your cattle. So many times, cattleman are misrepresented by the vegetarians and their ilk as being only interested in profits and having no interest in the livestock's well being. As my dad has said, "We give them a good home, make sure they are fed and watered well and have plenty of land to cover. Beyond that, we sell them and we cannot decide where they go from there." I don't subscribe to channels until I see I like something about what they are doing. I subscribed to yours today.
I'm glad you kept blonde cow, because I'm a sappy old fool. AI is a great tool for herd improvement. You have access to a wide variety of genetics where with live bulls you are locked into what you have, and can afford. Love your videos, by the way.
im glad your giving the blonde cow around another year. Enjoyed the video. I know your job is a hard and decisions need to be made. thanks for the video
Mike it seems like blond cow has become part of the family I personally think you made a great decision to keep her and I hope she gets to live out the rest of her life on the ranch if u can afford to to do keep her
My opinion is keeping a open cow cost you around $800.00 for a year to keep her fed on grass and winter feeding, then you got the income of the calf that you could be selling that your not making due to feeding open cow. at 12 years old she probably not gonna breed back
For the UA-cam channel, it appears to be a good move but if it was my operation I would have to ask the same question that you did how many pets can we afford I would have to cash her in or trade for something that is more productive I kind of always think of it as a tenant that won't pay the rent how long can they stay
Mike, I am a new subscriber, am having a lot of fun. Today I just want to say a couple of things about blonde cow. First, thanks for giving her a second shot. I agree it may be a bad business decision - but it is a good human decision - and if you don't allow yourself to follow your heart first at least some of the time - I think it will be bad for you. On the other hand, tough decisions are a major part of the job, so I just want you to know I will try to keep my animal loving, city slicker opinion to myself when that happens in the future. But as you are there longer, you will get experience that will help make your choices better - and when you feel like you have to make a choice that runs contrary to S.O.P. it will have a basis that has a good chance of proving right. Here's hoping this is one of those choices. Either way, no need to regret - its part of the cost of training.
We kept a 21 year old horse retired for the last 5 years of his life. Worked in our favor cuz horses are herd animals and since he was older, he would go slower which made the young ones wait up for him. However 3 years into retirement, he decided to show the other horses how to use the side of their head to open the green gates and we ended up having to rope the gates. 😂😂😂 But you could saddle that horse and he would drive cattle without the cowboy on him. And he also ended up being our front lawn mower. 😂😂😂 Maybe you can use blond cow to lead your UA-cam and mow your lawn? 😂😂😂
Thank you for keeping your senior horse in good care in his last years. So many get shipped to auction then to the kill pen. That's a disgusting business.
My Paternal Grandparents had a small family farm; they had off white cattle, they were Charolais. It looks like that blonde cow is also a Charolais breed.
I once read in the comments or a blog, don't remember exactly, that the best beef a farmer had ever had was from a 16 year old cow that he let age for a few months.
Mike, she are going to get one ,just go on and give her another chance she's going to surprise you. You will have a big smile on your face. Thanks for sharing
I've gotten quite fond of that goofy cow. Thanks for keeping old Blondie I don't even care if it was prearranged it still solidified my loyalty to the channel. Luca
Hi again MIKE!! YAY! I got my answer! You left me hanging with your last reply!! Pretty sure the heart would win out over common sense and money! Maybe a bit because of all you mentioned but a bit because of the kids family and YOU! Probably a good idea Mike! The number one or two out of many does make them special and from one who has had many of all kinds it's just not everyday you find a cow to be warm and fuzzy lol! Happy for Blonde Cow at her age to get a much deserved break lol. I've always lived my life not making a big decision in the midst of turmoil or confusion but more importantly not make a decision Because of money. Money is a great thing depending on our choices what to do with it how we use it. Driven by bad motives or greed it's repercussions can be haunting and or devastating to one's mind and soul. It is the root of all evil! So Mike with a good choice in your quiet time considering other factors you can smile and have peace... Don't go there with the what ifs and burden yourself with the but it coulds. Carry on as usual but probably enjoying her a bit more because of your choice. You're one of the good guys Mike! But I knew you'd make the good choice and do the right thing...
I hadn't gotten to that part of preg check yet. Raw video gives me vertigo, I can only watch a few minutes at a time. LOL Good call, Mike. I thought she'd be good to put in with the heifers. Pass on some of her friendly temperament to the new moms, so she still has a job to do. Another great edit. Thanks for sharing. -EZ
Yea! On your decision to keep Blond cow. She is your Super Star. Hopefully after a year off she will carry a calf for you next season. Happy Thanksgiving to y'all. God Bless all people and critters.
Although she's not contributing a calf this year she does add value to the ranch as a video icon. Plus....... She's nice to look at. I kinda knew you couldn't give up on her just yet.
Not all decisions are based on money. Sometimes we get attached to animals for no good reason or we apply human natures to an animal when we really should know better. But it really comes down to as a rancher and a business person that we always have choices to make and sometimes they don't make sense to everyone else. But as long as you are comfortable with it it is all we need to explain.
I have a blonde among my heard as well. She is just a heifer, and for some reason, will come up to me like your blonde cow (well, the some reason is she wants some cubes). I know what you mean about hating to get rid of the older ones. I have lost 4 in the last month. One had to be put down, and that just kills me. I was really hoping you would keep ole blonde! Thank you for making my day! And hers too!
You did right Mike. I have some of those that just touch my heart. My wife says I will go broke messing with cows because I love animals too much. She’s right. God made some of us too tender hearted. Weird thing is, it’s only with animals.
I'm so happy u kept the blonde cow.. Thank u for giving her another chance. Everyone needs a second chance. Hopefully blonde cow wont make much difference in the food cost and I hope she haves a baby this year for u..
I see 2 factors to this really. First being, Blonde cow contributes to the health of the ranch family. Her friendly nature adds positivity and happiness to the day to day work on the ranch. I was so expecting a sad ending. Very happy she gets a 2nd chance
she is beautiful as an ambassador to Our Wyoming Life. Great Choice! Viva La Blondie!
Glad to see blonde cow gets to stay. It shows you have a heart. Also that life isn't always about money. Keep up the hard work.
I was so happy when mike said he would keep her. Was surprised when this video moved me to tears, the part at the end about being different makes you special. Or just the way she slowly followed mike as he opened gates for her and she moseyed through. Love this channel.
Sometime's you do something that just feel's right.
Right decision Mike. She deserves another chance. Love seeing her on camera.
I agree totally
More like a luxury decision but yeah nothing wrong with that
Michael Ward iI would say it’s the wrong decision. No money in welfare cattle.
You did the right thing, I think you could get sponsors for blonde cow,
I grew up on a farm, and culling is the worst part. I'm so happy you decided to give blonde cow a second chance. Lord knows we all need that every once in a while. Keep up the great work you and Erin do everyday.

One of the saddest parts of farming. Especially the special ones.. brilliant you are keeping her
Thanks for taking us around Mike....great to see those wide open spaces this morning! Stay warm buddy!

Enjoy your videos as usual glad your giving blonde cow another chance
Im glad you kept her. She does deserve another chance, like you said she may have not cycled in time for the visit with the bulls.
Awww.can you give Blonde cow grace..shes different stands out.
I really hope she calves next year. I did the same thing a couple times myself. Good Luck.
I've gotten quite fond of that goofy cow. Thanks for keeping old Blondie I don't even care if it was prearranged it still solidified my loyalty to the channel. Luca
Thanks -Mike
If being odd makes you number one I've been number one all my life
Number one is an odd number thanks. - Mike
Thanks mike
I think you made the right decision for blonde cow
Keep up the good work
Thank you Tim - Mike
It came down to the wire and I was back and forth a few times. Thanks - Mike
Awww. Hopefully Blonde Cow will conceive again this year. I hope so. ❤️
Love that you kept her, we all deserve a second chance!
Thanks for watching Pamela. -Mike
I hadn't gotten to that part of preg check yet. Raw video gives me vertigo, I can only watch a few minutes at a time. LOL
Good call, Mike. I thought she'd be good to put in with the heifers. Pass on some of her friendly temperament to the new moms, so she still has a job to do.
Another great edit. Thanks for sharing. -EZ
Yeah!!!!! Glad your keeping her!!!!
Thanks Red Cossack. -Mike
Blonde Cow is very photogenic Mark. -Mike
It's great to see others help out and visit your ranch. I wish I could be there. I would love that fresh milk and great 🥓.Nice Work Mike
Very true jerry. Thanks -Mike
Mike I really like these type of videos you produce, the cattle ones.
Good move. I’m glad you kept her.
You did right Mike. I have some of those that just touch my heart. My wife says I will go broke messing with cows because I love animals too much. She’s right. God made some of us too tender hearted. Weird thing is, it’s only with animals.
Great job , Mike I enjoyed your video .
Great work Mike, your healthy cows and the Blonde 🐄 will have one. Might have a serious problem.
Good choice!!!! Glad your keeping her!!!
Thanks joel. -Mike
Glad to hear Blonde cow is sticking around. What a hard decision yall had to make.
